The Anthropic Economic Index connector lets you ask Claude questions about Anthropic’s data on how people use Claude—for example, which occupations use AI most or what tasks teachers use Claude for. To try it, open the connectors directory in claude.ai, find Anthropic Economic Index, and enable it. Anthropic says no installation is required and the connector works in any conversation with any Claude model.
What the connector does—and what it doesn’t
The connector is a conversational way to explore the Anthropic Economic Index, not the Index itself. Instead of starting with charts, you can ask Claude a question, follow up to narrow the subject, and ask it to show the underlying data. Anthropic says answers are grounded in Index data.
For direct exploration, the Economic Index dashboard offers interactive visualizations and dataset downloads. The connector provides a question-and-answer interface to the Index; the available sources do not establish that it uses a separate dataset.
How to enable it and start asking questions
- Open claude.ai. In the connectors menu, open the directory.
- Find Anthropic Economic Index. Select it and enable the connector. Anthropic’s launch instructions say there is nothing to install.
- Ask a broad question. Start with an occupation, industry, task, or geography, such as “Which occupations use AI the most?”
- Refine the question. Ask a follow-up about a particular group, place, or task. Examples from Anthropic include “What are the most common ways people in Colorado use Claude?” and “What sorts of tasks do teachers use Claude for?”
- Request the underlying data. If you need to inspect the basis for an answer, ask Claude to show the source data and consider checking the dashboard directly.
Connector menus and availability can change. If you do not see it, check the current directory in claude.ai rather than assuming it is available in every account or region.

What data and measures are behind the answers?
The Index organizes interactive views around Claude usage, occupations, and geographies. Its dashboard includes global, country, and state or province geography levels, and job groupings based on the U.S. Department of Labor’s O*NET classification. Metrics include usage per capita, share of usage, share of parent-geography usage, AI autonomy, multitasking, task success, education years, human-only ability and time, and human-with-AI time. Definitions matter: a share of usage, for example, is not interchangeable with usage per capita.
Anthropic’s January 15, 2026 report introduced five “economic primitives” for describing AI use: task complexity, skill level, purpose (work, education, or personal use), AI autonomy, and success. The report analyzed conversations from November 2025, predominantly using Claude Sonnet 4.5. It also reported that tasks covered by Claude required an average of 14.4 years of education, compared with 13.2 years for the economy’s average. Those figures describe that report’s sample; they do not measure the connector’s effect.

In its June 26, 2026 report, “Cadences”, Anthropic described changes to the Index pipeline: sampling at a higher rate, adding a classifier that labels conversation output, and publishing more granular monthly data for Claude conversations and first-party API traffic. The Index dashboard was also last updated June 26, 2026. Results should therefore be tied to a specific report or dataset release, not treated as a timeless series with unchanged definitions.

The Index describes observed use of Claude in Anthropic’s data. Anthropic’s initial methodology used its Clio analysis tool to categorize anonymized Claude conversations against occupational tasks in O*NET. It is not a survey asking workers whether they use AI, a forecast of future adoption, or a census of all workplace AI use.
Anthropic states the boundary plainly: “As always, the Index reflects patterns in Claude usage rather than the labor market as a whole, and Claude will point you back to the source data and its limitations as you explore.” A pattern in this dataset can help describe Claude use, but it cannot by itself establish how common a task is across an occupation or the entire economy.
- Identify the release. Monthly coverage, pipeline, and definitions may differ between reports.
- Keep data streams distinct. If comparing Claude conversations with first-party API traffic, use the same dated release and that report’s definitions.
- Read the measure precisely. Geography share, per-capita usage, autonomy, and task success answer different questions.
- Do not infer adoption or impact from availability. The July 2026 connector announcement did not report connector user counts, adoption rates, or measured economic impact.
When the connector is useful
Use it when you have a question that maps to the Index’s occupational, task, or geographic views and want to explore conversationally. It can help you move from a broad question to a narrower one and request the data behind an answer. If you need to compare metrics, verify definitions, or inspect the available visualizations and downloads, use the dashboard as well.
Rank #4
For any statistic you cite, name the report or dataset release and its period. That is especially important when comparing results across releases, since Anthropic has changed the pipeline and added more granular monthly reporting.
