If you cannot speak, or your voice is too weak or unreliable, a phone or tablet can turn typed words into spoken output. The most flexible approach is usually an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) app with text-to-speech, configured for an input method you can control. You can also use a dedicated speech-generating device, built-in reading-aloud tools, or a non-electronic backup such as a communication board or paper and pencil.
Start with the method you can operate consistently, then match it to the conversation: a few stored phrases for quick exchanges, a full AAC system for complex communication, and a backup for times when electronics are unavailable.
Text-to-speech and AAC are related, but not identical
What text-to-speech does
Text-to-speech (TTS) converts written text into synthesized speech. You enter words with a keyboard, touch screen, switch, mouse, or another access method, then activate a speak control. The device produces an audible voice for people nearby.

It does not, by itself, provide a complete communication system: you still need a way to compose messages, reach common phrases quickly, correct mistakes, and communicate when the device is not available.

What AAC adds
Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is the broader category for methods that supplement or replace speech. AAC can be unaided, such as gesture or manual signs, or aided, such as a communication board, book, computer, handheld device, tablet, or speech-generating device. A system may combine typed words, symbols, stored phrases, and synthesized or recorded speech.
ASHA’s AAC overview states: “The appropriate mode or modes of communication are determined by the needs of the individual with disabilities and their communication partners.” Someone may use different methods with different people or in different settings. A quick typed sentence may be enough at a shop, while a larger vocabulary and symbol-based layout may be more useful at work, school, or home.
You do not need to pass a prerequisite test
ASHA says there are no specific age, cognitive, language, or motor prerequisites for starting AAC. That is an access principle, not a guarantee that every app, device, or input method will work for every person. The system must fit the user’s movement, vision, language, attention, environment, and communication partners. An assessment by a speech-language pathologist or other qualified AAC professional can help when choosing a complex system, but you can also begin with an accessible device and simple phrases.
Set up a phone or tablet for spoken communication
Exact menus differ by operating system, device model, language, and app. The following workflow applies to most AAC or TTS apps without assuming a particular release.
- Choose the communication app. Use an AAC app that can compose text and has a clearly visible speak button. A basic TTS app may be sufficient for occasional typed messages; an AAC app is more useful when you need symbols, categories, stored phrases, or multiple communication modes.
- Check the output before relying on it. Open the app, type a short sentence, and activate Speak. Confirm that the speaker is audible in the places where you expect to communicate. Test both the device speaker and any headphones or external speaker you intend to use.
- Adjust the voice and rate. Look in the app’s voice or speech settings for language, voice, volume, and speaking rate. A slower rate can improve comprehension; a faster rate may make routine exchanges quicker. Keep a rate that unfamiliar listeners can follow.
- Create high-value phrases. Save messages you use repeatedly, such as a greeting, an explanation that you communicate by device, requests for assistance, yes/no responses, directions, and urgent needs. Keep the wording in your own voice and review the list as your needs change.
- Organize messages for the setting. Put everyday phrases on the first screen or in a favorites area. Use separate groups for medical visits, work or school, transport, shopping, and emergencies. Reduce the number of taps needed for messages that must be delivered quickly.
- Make the input reliable. If direct touch is difficult, use the alternative input options described below. Increase text or button size, change screen orientation, or use a stand so the display remains stable and visible. Test the arrangement while seated, standing, and in the environments where you will actually communicate.
- Practice with communication partners. Tell regular partners how to wait for the device to finish speaking, how to indicate that they did not understand, and how to ask a yes/no clarification question. Practice repairing a misunderstood message rather than relying only on perfect first attempts.
- Prepare for offline use. Download or enable the voice and language resources your app supports for use without an internet connection. Confirm that saved phrases remain available in airplane mode or in a location with poor reception.
These steps do not require you to use your natural voice. They create spoken output from text or symbols while leaving the choice of input method to you.

Choose an input method that does not depend on speech
The voice is only one part of the system. If touch, typing, or pointing is tiring or inaccurate, change how messages are entered rather than abandoning spoken output.
Android access options
Android’s accessibility help documents several ways to operate a device without vocal capability, including touch, typing, Switch Access, and camera switches. It also documents connecting a USB or Bluetooth keyboard or mouse. Availability and exact labels vary by device and Android version.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Input method | How it works | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| Touch | Select letters, words, symbols, or a Speak button directly on the screen. | Useful when you can target controls accurately and want the simplest setup. |
| Typing | Enter text with the on-screen keyboard or a physical keyboard. | Useful for unrestricted messages, names, and topics not already stored as buttons. |
| Switch Access | Move through or select on-screen items with one or more switches. | Useful when a switch is easier to activate than precise touch. |
| Camera switches | Use supported camera-detected movements as switch actions. | Useful when a person can make a reliable head or facial movement but cannot operate a hand switch. Test accuracy and privacy in the intended environment. |
| USB or Bluetooth keyboard or mouse | Operate the device with external pointing or typing hardware. | Useful when a larger keyboard, a different pointer, or a familiar computer-style control improves accuracy. |
On an Android device, open the system’s Accessibility settings and look for the available options for Switch Access, camera switches, and physical input. The names and setup sequence can differ, so follow the instructions shown on your device and verify that the AAC app accepts the resulting selections.
Physical access and positioning
A mount, stand, or adjustable arm can keep the screen at a usable angle and prevent accidental movement. Consider an external keyboard, mouse, or switch interface only after confirming that the device, operating system, and AAC app support it. A specialist can help determine switch placement, scanning speed, dwell time, and other settings when fatigue or involuntary movement affects accuracy.
Reduce the effort of composing a message
- Store complete phrases for frequent requests instead of retyping them.
- Use a small number of clearly named categories rather than deep menus.
- Keep a yes button, no button, repeat button, and clear or back control easy to find.
- Use predictive text only if its suggestions are accurate enough to prevent misunderstandings.
- Keep a way to produce an urgent message with the fewest possible selections.
Built-in reading aloud is different from an AAC app
Phone and tablet operating systems may include tools that read the screen or a selected passage aloud. These are designed primarily for consuming on-screen content. An AAC app is designed for composing and delivering your own messages.

| Feature | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Speak Screen | Have the device read an entire visible screen or document aloud. | It may read interface labels or surrounding content instead of delivering a concise message to another person. |
| Speak Selection | Read a highlighted passage or selected text. | You must first select the correct text, which can be slow for a live conversation. |
| AAC or TTS communication app | Compose a message and activate speech output for a listener. | You must configure the app, vocabulary, access method, and voice for your needs. |
Apple documents Speak Screen and Speak Selection with controls to pause speech, change the rate, and navigate content. Feature availability can vary by region, language, operating-system version, and application. If your goal is conversation, use a communication app or speech-generating function rather than assuming a reading-aloud tool will provide an efficient message workflow.

When a dedicated speech-generating device makes sense
A general-purpose phone or tablet is convenient, but it may not provide enough durability, access control, speaker volume, mounting options, or communication speed. ASHA describes computerized speech-generating devices and notes that absent or unreliable voice can occur with conditions such as voice-box injury, cancer, tracheostomy, ventilator dependence, or neurodegenerative disease.
A dedicated system may be appropriate when communication is needed throughout the day, when an individualized access method is essential, or when a phone cannot remain available, charged, or configured reliably. It is not automatically necessary. A tablet running a suitable AAC app can be an effective aided AAC device when it matches the person’s access and communication requirements.
Questions to answer before choosing dedicated equipment
- Can the person select letters, symbols, or stored phrases reliably, and for how long before fatigue?
- Is direct touch practical, or are switches, scanning, a keyboard, a mouse, or another method needed?
- Does the person need unrestricted spelling, symbol-based language, recorded messages, or several languages?
- Will the system be used indoors, outdoors, in noisy places, or while moving?
- How will it be mounted, carried, charged, protected, and repaired?
- Can communication partners understand the output and support repairs when a message is missed?
Keep communication effective in real conversations
Match the system to the exchange
U.S. disability-access rules recognize that the appropriate communication aid depends on the nature, length, complexity, and context of the exchange. For a short transaction, a few stored phrases and typing may be enough. A long medical discussion, legal interview, classroom interaction, or emergency conversation may require a fuller vocabulary, faster access, and a partner who allows enough time.
Protect privacy and independence
Use a passcode and device privacy settings when the system contains sensitive medical, personal, or financial information. Organize private phrases so they are not accidentally spoken while demonstrating the device. Communication aids should allow timely communication while preserving the person’s privacy and independence.

Tell partners how to communicate with you
A short note on the lock screen or a printed card can say that you communicate through a device, that the device will speak for you, and that the listener should address you directly and allow time. Ask partners to confirm what they heard without grabbing the device or completing sentences for you. If a message is misunderstood, use a repeat, rephrase, or spelling method rather than allowing someone else to guess.
Backups for a dead battery, broken device, or difficult setting
Electronic speech output is not always available. Keep at least one method that works without a charged or connected device.
- Paper and pencil: Write a message or ask the other person to write questions that can be answered.
- Communication board or book: Point to letters, words, symbols, or common phrases. A laminated board can survive conditions that would damage a phone.
- Stored printed card: Carry a brief explanation of how you communicate, plus essential requests and emergency information.
- Extra time: Ask the other person to wait rather than treating a slow response as a lack of understanding.
- Speech-to-speech transliteration: In some settings, a support service can listen to your communication and voice or type it for another person. Confirm availability and privacy before relying on it.
The U.S. Department of Justice’s effective-communication guidance identifies writing, communication boards or devices, extra time, and speech-to-speech transliteration as possible aids depending on the situation. A backup is not a lesser form of communication; it is a way to preserve your choice when technology fails.

Communication access in U.S. public services
In the United States, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) addresses effective communication in its own legal contexts. Public entities covered by Title II must give primary consideration to the auxiliary aid or service requested by the individual, while Title III rules for public accommodations call for consultation with the individual where possible. The appropriate aid still depends on the exchange and the person’s communication method.

These provisions are not a universal rule for every country, private interaction, or product. If a hospital, government office, school, court, or business interaction is important, explain in advance that you use AAC or text-to-speech and state what will make communication effective. Ask for the accommodation you need and keep your own backup method available.

Troubleshoot common problems
The device speaks, but people cannot understand it
Lower the speaking rate, increase volume without distortion, choose a clearer voice, and move the speaker away from competing noise. Tell the listener to ask for a repeat. A stored phrase explaining that the device is your voice can prevent people from mistaking a synthetic voice for background audio.
Typing takes too long
Build a phrase bank for recurring messages, place high-priority phrases on the first screen, and use symbols or categories for routine requests. Keep unrestricted typing available for names and unexpected topics.
Touch selections are inaccurate
Increase button size and spacing, use a stable mount, change the device angle, or switch to a keyboard, mouse, Switch Access, or camera-switch method supported by your device. Test one change at a time so you know which setting improves accuracy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe app or voice is unavailable without internet
Check whether the app and selected voice support offline operation, then test in airplane mode before an important appointment. Keep your printed or paper backup accessible.
Partners answer for you
Give them a clear instruction to wait, address you directly, and ask a clarification question when needed. A communication card can state this in one sentence. In formal settings, request enough time for your chosen method rather than accepting a substitute that changes your meaning.
For people designing accessible technology
Section508.gov’s accessibility requirements tool notes that speech-input functionality should include a mode that does not require speech. That principle matters when an application expects voice commands: users who cannot speak need an alternative input path. Accessibility Standards Canada’s listing for EN 301 549:2024 includes speech-output provisions for information and communication technology. These are technical standards, not step-by-step instructions for selecting an individual AAC setup, but they reinforce the need for non-speech input and usable spoken output.
Start with the smallest system that meets your real need
If you can operate a phone or tablet, begin by installing or opening an AAC or TTS communication app, testing its Speak control, saving your most important phrases, and configuring an input method you can use reliably. Add built-in reading-aloud tools when you need content read to you, not as a replacement for a communication app. Move to a dedicated speech-generating device when the general-purpose setup cannot provide dependable access, durability, or vocabulary. Keep writing, a board or book, or another low-tech method ready for every situation in which electronic speech may fail.
