Yes—you can use a Street Fighter Secret Lair printing in the same deck as its mechanically equivalent Magic (Universes Within) replacement. Wizards of the Coast treats the two printings as one game piece, so they share the same four-copy limit in most Constructed formats and the same one-copy limit in singleton formats such as Commander. Different printed names do not by themselves make them different cards.

The important qualifications are to identify the exact card, confirm its current Oracle text and format legality, and verify that a replacement actually exists. Street Fighter was a physical Secret Lair product, and the 2025 policy that made new Universes Beyond booster sets broadly legal does not automatically change the legality of that older release.

What the Street Fighter cards are

The Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair x Street Fighter product contains eight cards representing playable characters from the original Street Fighter II release. They are normal physical Magic cards with a crossover presentation: character names, artwork and flavor are tailored to Street Fighter rather than to Magic’s own Multiverse.

Some mechanically unique crossover cards can later receive an in-Magic presentation, commonly called a Universes Within replacement. A replacement may have a different name, art and flavor, but it is not an extra card for deck construction when Wizards has designated it as the equivalent game piece.

That designation is the deciding fact. The card’s artwork, collector value or printed character name does not determine whether you may combine the versions; the official card identity and current legality do.

How equivalence works for deck building

Wizards’ Secret Lair policy says the Universes Beyond card and its in-Magic version are “considered equivalent game pieces.” The Magic Tournament Rules make the same point for pairs whose Universes Beyond and Universes Within versions have different names: they are considered the same card.

In practical terms, the two printings occupy one slot in your deck’s copy count. You can choose whichever physical version you prefer, or mix them, as long as the total remains within the format’s limit.

Deck-building situation How to count the two printings
Most Constructed formats Count Street Fighter and equivalent in-Magic copies together toward the normal four-copy maximum.
Commander and other singleton formats Use no more than one copy of that game piece unless a card or format rule specifically changes the deck-building limit.
A card effect that changes copy limits Apply the effect to the shared game piece, then follow the format’s other deck-construction rules.
No confirmed replacement Do not assume two cards are equivalent merely because they depict the same character or have similar wording.

For example, three Street Fighter printings plus one equivalent in-Magic printing use all four copies allowed in a normal Constructed deck. Replacing one with the other does not give you a fifth copy.

Step 1: Identify the exact Street Fighter card

Start with the physical card in front of you. Record all of the information that distinguishes a printing:

  • the printed card name;
  • the set code shown on the card;
  • the collector number;
  • the language and condition, if you are deciding which copy to register or play.

The product’s eight cards are not interchangeable just because they came in the same drop. A card database can contain multiple versions, promotional treatments or later reprints. Searching by the exact printed name and checking the set and collector number prevents you from attaching the wrong legality or replacement information to your card.

Step 2: Check the current Oracle entry

Use Gatherer or another current card database to locate the card’s Oracle entry. Oracle text is the official wording used for rules interpretation, even when the words on an older or crossover printing differ in layout, punctuation or terminology.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a rules question arises at an event, the Magic Tournament Rules allow a player to request the official wording. In a sanctioned tournament, the Head Judge has final authority over the interpretation and the ruling at that event.

Compare the card’s rules identity rather than its flavor presentation. Important fields include:

  • mana cost and color identity;
  • card type, supertypes and subtypes;
  • rules text, including activated and triggered abilities;
  • power and toughness, where applicable;
  • any characteristic-defining information used by the format.

Oracle text is also the best way to resolve apparent differences between the Street Fighter wording and a replacement’s wording. Do not treat a visual difference as evidence that the cards function differently.

Step 3: Find out whether a replacement exists

Search the card database for the card’s Universes Within or in-Magic counterpart. Wizards’ policy explains how mechanically unique Secret Lair cards may receive in-Magic versions, but it does not promise a replacement for every Street Fighter card or publish a universal mapping in the policy itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a replacement only when the database or an official card reference identifies it as the equivalent game piece. Similar names, matching mana costs or a shared character reference are not sufficient proof. If no counterpart is listed, continue using the Street Fighter card and verify its legality on its own.

When you find a counterpart, record both names for deck registration and event communication. A deck-building application may recognize only one name, especially if its card catalog is out of date; keeping the printed name, replacement name, set code and collector number together makes correction easier.

Step 4: Apply the format’s copy limit

Four-copy formats

In a format with the normal four-copy rule, add every copy of the Street Fighter printing and its equivalent replacement before checking the limit. Four total copies are allowed; the split can be any combination of the two versions.

A 2–2 split, a 3–1 split or four copies of one printing are all the same from a deck-construction perspective. A fifth physical copy is not legal merely because it uses the other name or artwork.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Commander and other singleton formats

Commander normally permits one copy of a card, apart from basic lands and specific exceptions. The Street Fighter printing and its equivalent replacement are one game piece for that singleton rule, so you normally choose one physical copy between them.

Commander legality also depends on the commander’s color identity and the card’s current format status. Equivalence does not bypass those requirements.

Effects that alter deck construction

If a card or format rule changes how many copies you may include, first establish that the Street Fighter and replacement versions are the same game piece, then apply the modifying rule. The equivalence does not erase an effect that explicitly changes copy limits; it determines which physical cards are being counted.

Step 5: Verify format legality before registering a deck

Do not infer legality from the crossover treatment alone. Check the individual card’s current status for the format you intend to play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wizards announced in 2024 that new Universes Beyond booster sets released from 2025 onward would be legal in all major Constructed formats. That change is forward-looking: it does not retroactively alter the legality of existing products. The Street Fighter cards came from a Secret Lair release, so the 2025 booster-set policy is context rather than a blanket legality ruling for them.

Cards included as supplemental Commander or Jumpstart material in newer products can have narrower Eternal legality. Conversely, a card’s presence in a crossover product does not by itself establish legality in every format. Check the current entry for the exact Street Fighter card and, if relevant, the exact replacement.

Before an event, confirm:

  • the format and event date;
  • the card’s current legality in that format;
  • whether the replacement is legal independently, rather than assuming equivalence transfers a restriction;
  • any set-specific or supplemental-product exception listed by the format’s current rules.

Street Fighter printing versus in-Magic replacement

When both versions are legal and available, choose based on practical priorities rather than an imagined rules advantage. The equivalent game piece has the same deck-building identity, but the physical cards can differ significantly in presentation and condition.

Comparison point Street Fighter printing In-Magic replacement
Rules identity The same game piece when officially designated as equivalent; use current Oracle text for rules.
Printed name and flavor Uses the Street Fighter character and crossover presentation. Uses Magic’s Multiverse presentation and may have a different printed name.
Format legality Must be checked for the exact Secret Lair card. Must also be checked for the exact replacement and format.
Artwork and theme Best fit for a Street Fighter-themed deck or collection. Best fit for a deck using Magic’s in-universe names and art.
Condition Use the copy that is least worn or damaged when tournament presentation matters. Use the copy that is least worn or damaged when tournament presentation matters.
Cost and availability Depends on current secondary-market supply, language and condition. Depends on the replacement’s print run, supply, language and condition.

Rules identity and legality come first. After those are confirmed, visual preference, card condition, availability and the theme of the deck are reasonable tie-breakers.

Preparing mixed printings for tournament play

Use uniform sleeves

Use sleeves with the same back design, color, finish and condition for every card in the deck. Mixing Street Fighter and in-Magic cards is allowed, but differently colored or visibly worn sleeves can make individual cards identifiable and create a marked-card issue.

Replace sleeves that are bent, scratched, cloudy or otherwise distinguishable. Keep a few matching spare sleeves available for damaged cards during an event.

Handle double-faced cards correctly

The Tournament Rules permit sleeves but require them to be identical. A double-faced card represented in a deck must use a completely opaque sleeve, or the deck must use an authorized substitute card as required by the event’s procedures. This is separate from the Street Fighter equivalence question, but it matters if the same deck contains double-faced cards.

Bring evidence for a name mismatch

If an opponent or deck check questions why your printed names differ, show the current card-database entry identifying the equivalent game piece and, when helpful, the Oracle wording. Explain that the Tournament Rules treat the Universes Beyond and Universes Within versions as the same card. Do not argue a ruling yourself; in a sanctioned event, ask the Head Judge to decide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common problems and how to resolve them

“The names are different, so I have too many copies.”

Different names do not settle the question. Check whether the two versions are officially identified as equivalent. If they are, count them together toward the format’s copy limit and show the relevant card entry or rules passage to the judge.

“My deck builder lists both names separately.”

Deck-building software can lag behind official card data. Confirm the card’s identity and legality from a current source, then use the name and set information your event’s registration system accepts. If the system cannot represent the combination, contact the organizer before submitting the decklist and retain the physical cards’ set codes and collector numbers.

“I cannot find an in-Magic replacement.”

Not every crossover card is guaranteed to have one. Search by the exact Street Fighter printing, check current Oracle data and treat the card as a standalone Secret Lair printing unless an official source identifies a counterpart. Do not substitute a card that merely looks or sounds similar.

“The 2025 Universes Beyond rule makes my Street Fighter card legal everywhere.”

It does not. The all-formats change applies to new Universes Beyond booster sets released from 2025 onward and does not retroactively change older products. Street Fighter is a Secret Lair release, so verify its individual legality for the format and event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The card is legal, but the opponent says the Oracle text is different.”

Use the current Oracle entry for the rules text. Players may request the official wording, and the Head Judge’s interpretation controls in a sanctioned tournament.

“My mixed deck looks marked.”

Resleeve the entire deck in identical opaque sleeves or replace the visibly different card. A legal combination of printings can still fail a deck check if a card is identifiable from its back or sleeve.

A repeatable checklist

  1. Take the exact Street Fighter card and record its printed name, set code and collector number.
  2. Look up the current Oracle entry and confirm the card’s rules identity.
  3. Search for an officially identified Universes Within or in-Magic replacement; do not infer one from similar flavor.
  4. Count both printings together under the format’s four-copy or singleton rule.
  5. Check the exact card’s current legality for the format and event date.
  6. Confirm that any replacement has the legality required by that format.
  7. Choose the printing based on theme, condition, availability and presentation after rules and legality are settled.
  8. Sleeve every card identically and use completely opaque sleeves when the deck contains double-faced cards.
  9. Bring the current card entry to the event so a judge can resolve a name or wording question.

What to remember

  • The Street Fighter Secret Lair cards and their officially designated in-Magic replacements are one game piece, not two independent cards.
  • Different printed names do not create extra deck slots; count all equivalent copies together.
  • There is no automatic replacement for every Street Fighter card, so verify the mapping rather than guessing.
  • The 2025 all-formats Universes Beyond policy does not retroactively settle legality for the older Street Fighter Secret Lair.
  • Oracle text governs rules questions, and the Head Judge has final authority at a sanctioned event.
  • Uniform opaque sleeves protect a mixed-printing deck from marked-card problems.
