Use a stop-loss to define where a Bitcoin trade is no longer valid and a take-profit to exit when your objective is reached. Before entering, decide the invalidation price, profit objective, position size, trigger reference, and whether execution or price control matters more. A stop-market order prioritizes getting out but can fill beyond its trigger; a stop-limit order controls the worst acceptable price but can remain unfilled during a rapid move. Neither order guarantees an exit before liquidation.
What stop-loss and take-profit orders do
Both are conditional orders. You specify a trigger price and an execution instruction. When the exchange’s selected reference reaches the trigger, it submits the resulting market or limit order.
Stop-loss
A stop-loss is an exit intended to limit a losing position. For a long Bitcoin position, the stop normally sells below the entry. For a short position, it buys to close above the entry. The trigger represents the point at which your trade thesis is invalidated, not an arbitrary percentage chosen after the trade is open.
Take-profit
A take-profit exits a position after price reaches a predefined objective. It sells to close a long position above entry or buys to close a short position below entry. The objective can be based on a resistance or support level, a measured move, a risk-to-reward plan, or another condition in your strategy.

What happens after triggering
- The exchange watches the selected trigger reference.
- When that reference reaches the trigger, the conditional order becomes a market or limit order, depending on your selection.
- The resulting order competes with other orders in the order book. Its fill price and speed depend on liquidity, volatility, size, and the order type.
A trigger is therefore not the same thing as a guaranteed fill at that price. Coinbase describes a stop-market order as a stop trigger combined with a market order, while Binance says stop-market orders are more likely to execute during volatile conditions even though the execution price may vary.
Why Bitcoin volatility makes exit orders difficult
Bitcoin can move through several price levels while an exchange is matching orders. A sell stop-market order can fill below its trigger; a buy stop-market order can fill above it. Kraken specifically warns that high volatility and relatively low liquidity in cryptocurrency markets can produce a fill significantly lower or higher than the stop price.
A stop-limit order has the opposite trade-off. If a long position triggers a sell stop-limit and the market moves below the limit before a buyer accepts it, the order can remain open instead of closing the position. The same problem occurs for a buy stop-limit covering a short position when price jumps above the limit.

Leverage adds another hazard. A position can be liquidated before its stop is triggered or filled when margin is insufficient, the stop is too close to the liquidation price, or the market moves too quickly. A stop-loss reduces planned risk; it does not override the exchange’s liquidation engine.
Set the trade plan before placing an order
Write the thesis and invalidation level
State why you are entering and what price action would prove that idea wrong. Put the stop at that invalidation level, allowing for normal market noise and the instrument’s liquidity. Moving the stop farther away simply to avoid taking a loss changes the original risk calculation.

Choose the profit objective
Define the level or condition that makes the trade successful before you enter. A take-profit can be a single target or several targets, but each target should have a planned quantity and an order that will reduce the position rather than accidentally open a new one.
Size the position from the stop
First decide the maximum account loss you can accept. Then size the position so the distance between entry and the planned stop, plus an allowance for fees and slippage, fits that loss. The stop is not a substitute for sizing: a large leveraged position can lose more than planned if it gaps through the trigger.
There is no universal Bitcoin stop distance or take-profit percentage established by the cited exchange documentation. A level that is sensible for one instrument, timeframe, account size, and liquidity condition may be unsuitable for another.
Choose the trigger reference carefully
Exchanges may trigger conditional orders from mark price, last traded price, index price, or another platform-specific reference. These prices can diverge briefly, so the same numerical trigger may activate at different times.
| Trigger reference | What it represents | Decision point |
|---|---|---|
| Mark price | An exchange-calculated reference commonly used for derivatives risk and liquidation | Useful when you want the trigger tied to the platform’s fair-value calculation, but verify the exchange’s formula and rules |
| Last traded price | The price of the most recent matched trade on that venue | Responds directly to trades on the venue, yet a brief trade or wick can activate the order |
| Index price | A reference built from external or multiple-market prices | Can reduce dependence on one venue’s prints, but activation may differ from the tradable price in your order book |
The labels and available choices vary by exchange and instrument. Name the platform and contract when documenting a setup; do not assume that a spot order and a perpetual-futures order use the same trigger source.

Stop-market versus stop-limit
| Setup | After trigger | Main advantage | Main risk | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stop-market | Submits a market order | Highest likelihood of execution once the trigger is reached | Fill can be worse than the trigger because of slippage or a gap | When exiting is more important than controlling the exact price |
| Stop-limit | Submits a limit order with a specified limit price | Defines the least favorable price you are willing to accept | May not fill if price moves beyond the limit | When price certainty matters more than guaranteed execution and you accept remaining exposed |
For a long position, a stop-limit sell usually places the limit at or below the trigger. For a short position, a stop-limit buy usually places the limit at or above the trigger. The exact field names and permitted relationships differ by platform, so confirm the order preview before submitting.
Step-by-step: place a Bitcoin stop-loss and take-profit
- Identify the instrument. Confirm whether you are trading spot Bitcoin, a margin position, or a futures/perpetual contract. Contract size, margin, liquidation, and trigger rules can differ.
- Record entry, invalidation, and target prices. Write these down before submitting the entry. Include the quantity to close at each target.
- Calculate position size. Keep the planned stop loss within your account-risk limit after considering possible slippage, fees, and leverage.
- Select the trigger source. In the conditional-order panel, choose mark, last, index, or the platform’s available equivalent. Read the instrument-specific description rather than relying on a remembered setting.
- Choose execution type. Select stop-market when execution priority outweighs price certainty. Select stop-limit only when you can tolerate the order staying open if the market moves through your limit.
- Set the stop quantity and protective flags. Use reduce-only or close-position when supported so the exit decreases the existing position instead of opening an opposite one. Verify whether close-position uses the entire position or a specified amount.
- Set the take-profit. Enter its trigger, execution type, and quantity. A limit take-profit can control the minimum sale price for a long, but it can remain unfilled if buyers do not reach it; a market-style exit prioritizes completion at the available price.
- Use a bracket or attached TP/SL when available. An attached pair links the exits to the parent order. Many platforms cancel the untriggered side after one side executes, but check the venue’s rules for partial fills and amendments.
- Review and submit. Check side, quantity, trigger source, trigger price, limit price if applicable, reduce-only/close-position status, margin impact, and expiration. Submit only after the preview matches the plan.
- Verify the live orders. After the entry fills, confirm that the protective orders are active and that their quantities match the filled position. A parent order that fills partially may activate protection only for the filled amount.
Bracket orders, partial fills, and independent exits
How attached brackets normally behave
A bracket combines a take-profit and stop-loss around an entry. When one exit executes, the exchange commonly cancels the other untriggered exit to prevent a second order from acting on a position that is already closed. This behavior is often described as one-cancels-the-other, but implementation details vary.
Why partial fills matter
If an entry fills in stages, the attached exits may cover only the filled quantity. If you later add to the position, the original bracket may not automatically increase. Recheck the active size after every fill and amendment.
Independent stop orders
Some platforms can leave a stop-loss independent of the position. Kraken notes that selecting close or reduce settings is important when you want the order to close an existing position rather than remain as a separate instruction. An independent order can become an unintended short or long after the original position has been closed, so cancel stale orders manually when your position changes.
Keep the stop away from liquidation
Open the position’s margin panel and record its estimated liquidation price before confirming the entry. Compare that price with the planned stop and account for the direction of the trade. For a long, liquidation is generally below the entry; for a short, it is generally above it, but the exact calculation depends on the contract and account mode.

- Reduce leverage or position size if the planned stop is close to liquidation.
- Add margin only if doing so is part of a deliberate risk plan; extra margin does not make a poorly placed stop valid.
- Do not place a stop beyond liquidation and assume it will protect the position. Binance warns that a stop beyond, or too close to, liquidation may not protect it.
- Monitor maintenance-margin changes, funding, and contract rules because the liquidation estimate can change while the position is open.
Binance’s educational example describes 50x leverage, a 2% adverse move, and a 3% stop. That is an illustration of how leverage and stop distance interact, not a Bitcoin volatility statistic or a recommended setting.

The market gaps through a stop-market
Symptom: The fill is materially worse than the trigger. Cause: There were not enough offers at the trigger, or price moved rapidly between matching events. Response: Use smaller size, lower leverage, more liquid trading hours or markets, and a risk budget that allows slippage. A stop-market still usually offers a better chance of exiting than a stop-limit in a fast move, but it cannot guarantee price.
A stop-limit triggered but did not fill
Symptom: The conditional order activated and a limit order remains open. Cause: The market traded beyond the limit without returning. Response: Decide in advance whether non-execution is acceptable. If not, use a stop-market or a less restrictive limit relationship, understanding that the resulting fill may be worse.
Liquidation occurred before the stop
Symptom: The position closed through liquidation and the stop never executed. Cause: High leverage, insufficient margin, or a stop too close to the liquidation threshold. Response: Recalculate size and leverage from the stop first, then leave a meaningful buffer between the stop and liquidation price.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe exchange rejected the conditional order
Symptom: The order never became active. Possible causes: insufficient funds, insufficient margin, or a notional-size limit. Crypto.com lists these among conditional-order rejection reasons. Response: Check available balance, maintenance and initial margin, minimum and maximum order size, precision rules, and whether another order already reserves the funds.

The wrong price source triggered the order
Symptom: The stop activated earlier or later than expected. Cause: The order watched mark, index, or last price rather than the reference you had assumed. Response: Confirm the trigger field on the order ticket and read the instrument’s trigger definition before resubmitting.
The bracket protected only part of the position
Symptom: A residual position remains after an exit. Cause: The entry partially filled or the position was increased after the bracket was created. Response: Reconcile filled quantity with active TP/SL quantity and add or amend protection for the remainder.
How to manage orders after entry
- Confirm activation: Check that the order appears as open or working, not merely drafted or rejected.
- Watch unusual conditions: During a sharp move, review liquidity, spread, mark/index divergence, and margin rather than assuming the stop will behave normally.
- Do not move a stop impulsively: Change it only when your trading plan changes, and recalculate the resulting loss.
- Adjust targets deliberately: If you scale out, reduce the remaining stop quantity and verify that the take-profit quantity still matches the open position.
- Cancel stale orders: When the position is closed manually or by another route, remove independent stops and targets that could open a new position.
- Keep records: Note the trigger source, order type, submitted quantity, fill, and reason for any amendment. This separates execution problems from a flawed trade thesis.
Worked examples without a universal percentage
Long position using a stop-market
Suppose your plan buys Bitcoin at 60,000 and identifies 57,800 as the level that invalidates the setup. You calculate a position size whose planned loss from 60,000 to 57,800 is acceptable, then submit a sell stop-market with the exchange’s documented trigger source. If the reference reaches 57,800 during a fast decline, the order becomes a market sell and may fill below 57,800. The risk decision was the position size and invalidation level; the trigger is not a promised execution price.
Long position using a stop-limit
Using the same thesis, you might trigger at 57,800 and set a sell limit at 57,700. This limits the worst price you will accept, but a sudden move from 57,800 to 57,500 can leave the order unfilled. You remain exposed until it fills, is canceled, or you intervene according to your plan.
Short position with an attached target
If you short Bitcoin at 60,000 because resistance has held, the invalidation could be above that resistance and the take-profit below a support level. The stop is a buy order; the target is also a buy order. An attached bracket can cancel whichever buy order remains after one executes, subject to the platform’s handling of partial fills and reduce-only or close-position settings.
Comparing exchange implementations
The same order name can behave differently across venues. Before choosing a platform or instrument, compare these operational details:
- Trigger reference: mark, index, last traded, or another value, and how often it updates.
- Execution type: whether the venue offers stop-market, stop-limit, or both.
- Execution versus price certainty: how the platform describes market-stop slippage and limit-stop non-execution.
- Bracket behavior: whether the opposite exit is canceled automatically and how partial fills are handled.
- Position controls: availability of reduce-only and close-position flags, and whether stops can be independent of a position.
- Margin and liquidation: how liquidation is calculated and how much buffer your plan leaves.
- Order constraints: minimum and maximum notional, precision, available margin, and rejection conditions.
- Fees and jurisdiction: the applicable fee schedule and whether the product is available in your location.
Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, and Crypto.com publish different terminology and rules in their help materials. Read the documentation for the exact market and account mode rather than transferring settings from another venue.

Bottom line
Build the exit plan before the entry: define invalidation and target levels, size the position so the planned loss is acceptable, select the correct trigger reference, and keep the stop comfortably away from liquidation. Choose stop-market when getting out matters most, stop-limit only when you accept the possibility of no fill, and verify bracket quantities after every partial fill or position change. In Bitcoin’s fast markets, a stop is a risk-control instruction—not a guarantee of price, execution, or protection from liquidation.
