Connect your controller, confirm its support in Steam’s global controller settings, then open the demo’s per-game controller configuration from the Library or Big Picture mode. Choose the actions or bindings the demo exposes, save the layout, launch the demo, and test movement, menus, gameplay actions, and text entry. Steam’s current client and the demo’s own integration determine which options you see.
What Steam’s controller settings actually change
Steam has two separate layers of controller configuration. Global settings tell Steam which controller families to recognize and how to handle desktop, Big Picture, or Guide Button Chord input. A game’s per-title configuration determines what physical buttons, sticks, triggers, trackpads, or gyro movements do while that game is running. Changing a desktop shortcut or a global support checkbox does not automatically create a comfortable layout for every demo.
The demo may use native Steam Input actions defined by its developer, or it may use a legacy layout that translates controller input into gamepad, keyboard, or mouse signals. Those modes expose different controls and different expectations. A native layout can include separate action sets for contexts such as menus and gameplay. A legacy layout may offer broad physical-to-input mapping instead, without the game supplying named actions.
Before you configure the demo
Connect and power the controller
Connect the controller by USB or by the wireless method it supports, turn it on, and keep it connected while opening Steam’s configuration screens. Steam’s player documentation notes that the per-game edit command may not appear when no controller is connected. If you configure a layout first and connect hardware later, Steam may not show the same options.

Controller families Steam’s configurator lists
| Controller family | What Steam documentation says | Practical qualification |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 4 | Listed as a controller support category in Steam’s settings. | A particular device still needs to communicate through a protocol the client and demo handle correctly. |
| Xbox 360 and Xbox One | Listed as supported controller categories. | Button prompts and behavior can still depend on the demo’s own input implementation. |
| Nintendo Switch Pro | Included among controller families supported by the configurator. | Layout labels may not match the physical lettering used by another controller. |
| DirectInput gamepads | Generic DirectInput devices are included in the supported categories. | Some demos expect a different protocol, so test every important action in the running game. |
Steam Deck documentation also describes support for XInput, Raw Input, DirectInput, and Steam Input. That list describes input paths available on the device; it is not a guarantee that every demo responds identically to each path.
Confirm global controller support in Steam
Desktop Steam client
- Open Steam and select Steam in the upper-left menu.
- Choose Settings, then open Controller.
- Review the controller configuration support choices for the controller you connected: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, or generic controllers, as applicable.
- Confirm that Steam detects the device on that screen. Steam’s guide states that all detected controllers compatible with the configurator appear there.
The same page can expose global configurations for Big Picture controls, Desktop controls, and Guide Button Chord controls. Those profiles affect Steam’s interface or shortcuts. They are not the same as the demo’s per-game layout, so leave them unchanged unless you specifically need to navigate Steam itself with the controller.
Big Picture mode
Big Picture mode has its own Controller Settings route. Open the mode’s settings, enter Controller Settings, and verify that the connected device is recognized. The names and arrangement of controls can change between Steam client builds, so use the current equivalent of the documented Controller Settings entry if the wording differs.

Open the demo’s per-game controller configuration
Desktop Library route
- Open the Library and locate the indie demo. Demos can appear as their own entries rather than only as a launch option on a full game’s page.
- Right-click the demo’s library entry.
- Select Edit Steam Controller Configuration…, using the nearest current equivalent if Steam has revised the label.
If the edit command is missing, first verify that the controller is powered, connected, and visible in Settings > Controller. The documented workflow specifically warns that Steam may hide the per-game edit option when no controller is connected.
Big Picture route
- Highlight the demo in your Library.
- Open the game’s menu.
- Choose Manage Game.
- Select Controller Configuration.
Steam’s screenshots and labels can differ from the current client on Windows, macOS, Linux, or Steam Deck. Follow the same sequence—select the title, open its management menu, and enter its controller configuration—even when a menu item has a slightly different name.
Identify the layout type the demo provides
Native Steam Input actions
A demo with native Steam Input integration presents developer-defined actions rather than only raw buttons. You might see named actions for movement, jumping, interacting, opening a menu, or confirming a selection. The exact action list belongs to the game, so do not assume that two demos expose identical names.

Some developers define separate action sets for contexts such as gameplay, menus, vehicles, or other modes. Each action set can have independent bindings. If a button works during play but not in a menu, check whether the configurator is showing a different action set and assign the required menu action there as well.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLegacy configuration
A demo without native Steam Input actions can still use a legacy configuration. In this mode, Steam maps a physical control to another input type. Valve’s example includes mapping controls to XInput gamepad commands, keyboard keys, and mouse inputs.
Legacy mapping is useful when a demo has limited or unreliable controller support, but it is a translation layer, not a promise of full compatibility. A keyboard key may trigger an action while the demo is focused, yet fail in a launcher, overlay, text field, or unusual gameplay screen. Test the actual demo after saving the layout.

| Question | Native action layout | Legacy layout |
|---|---|---|
| What you assign | Developer-defined in-game actions. | Physical controls translated into gamepad, keyboard, or mouse inputs. |
| Context handling | May provide separate action sets for menus and gameplay. | Usually depends on the input translation and the demo’s own focus and mode handling. |
| Best starting point | Match each named action to a comfortable physical control. | Reproduce the keyboard, mouse, or gamepad command the demo already understands. |
| Main limitation | Only actions the developer exposed can be assigned directly. | Translation can break in text fields, launchers, overlays, or screens that handle input differently. |
Build a comfortable layout step by step
- List the actions you must reach. Before changing bindings, identify movement, camera control, confirm, cancel, pause, interaction, attack or primary action, secondary action, inventory or map, and any action needed for text entry. This prevents a layout that feels good in combat but leaves menus unusable.
- Start with the demo’s exposed actions. In a native layout, select each named action and assign the physical control you can reach without releasing movement. In a legacy layout, choose the corresponding XInput, keyboard, or mouse input that the demo already uses.
- Keep movement and camera behavior consistent. Place movement on the stick or directional controls you naturally use, and avoid assigning a menu command to a control that the demo continuously reads for camera movement unless the game’s behavior makes that combination comfortable.
- Handle menu commands separately. Confirm and cancel are often used more frequently in menus than in gameplay. If the demo exposes a menu action set, configure those actions there instead of assuming a gameplay binding carries over.
- Assign text-entry controls deliberately. A demo may open a name field, search box, password prompt, or other text screen. Test how the layout reaches the on-screen keyboard or accepts keyboard input. A remapped button cannot repair a text-entry screen the game does not support correctly.
- Save or apply the layout using the client’s current command. Steam’s wording can change, so use the visible save, apply, or equivalent command after editing. Close the configurator only after the changes are committed.
- Launch the demo from Steam. Start the same demo entry whose configuration you edited. Launching a separate executable or another copy can make a correct layout appear not to work.
Test the layout inside the demo
Do not judge a layout only from Steam’s preview. Use a repeatable in-game check:
- Move in more than one direction and verify that the character or cursor responds at the expected speed.
- Open and close the main menu, pause screen, map, inventory, or settings screen.
- Test confirm, cancel, back, and any shoulder-button navigation used by menus.
- Perform the demo’s most important gameplay actions, including any hold, toggle, or repeated input.
- Reach a text-entry screen if the demo has one and verify that letters, deletion, confirmation, and cancellation are possible.
- Watch for unwanted switching between controller prompts and mouse or keyboard prompts.
If movement works but a menu does not, the problem may be a separate action set or a screen that handles input differently. If a stick and mouse both move a camera or cursor at once, the conflict is usually in the game’s mixed-input behavior rather than a missing Steam binding.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →When to use gyro or a trackpad on Steam Deck
Steam Deck’s FAQ explains that gyro combined with a joystick or trackpad can provide finer camera or cursor control in suitable games. Developers can publish both traditional and motion-oriented configurations. For a player, this is an optional precision tool rather than a requirement: try gyro for aiming or a trackpad for cursor work only when the demo’s camera or interface benefits from it.

Compare the motion layout with a traditional gamepad layout in the same scene. Keep the option that lets you control the camera or cursor accurately without causing accidental movement. If the demo does not react properly to gyro, trackpad, or simultaneous stick-and-mouse input, remapping cannot guarantee a game-side fix.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose between layout approaches
| Your situation | Preferred starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The demo exposes clear named actions. | Native action layout. | You can assign controls to the game’s own actions and inspect separate contexts when available. |
| The demo only responds to keyboard commands. | Legacy keyboard mapping. | Steam can translate controller buttons into the keys the demo already recognizes. |
| The demo expects a standard gamepad. | Legacy XInput or gamepad mapping. | Physical controls can be presented as the gamepad inputs the title expects. |
| The demo uses cursor aiming or menus. | Legacy mouse mapping, or a Deck trackpad/gyro layout where suitable. | Mouse-style input can supply precision that a basic gamepad layout may lack. |
| You switch often between menus and gameplay. | Native layout with separate action sets, if exposed. | Each context can receive bindings appropriate to its controls. |
There is no universally best layout established by Steam’s documentation. Evaluate each option by the action being assigned, the input mode, your controller’s hardware, and whether the binding works in both menus and gameplay.
Troubleshoot common demo problems
| Symptom | Checks and corrective action |
|---|---|
| The per-game edit option is absent. | Connect and power the controller, then revisit Settings > Controller. Steam’s documented route may hide the edit command when no controller is connected. |
| The controller appears in Steam but not in the demo. | Confirm that you edited the exact demo entry you launch. Try the layout type that matches the demo’s behavior: native actions when exposed, or legacy gamepad, keyboard, or mouse mapping otherwise. |
| Some buttons work only during gameplay. | Inspect whether the demo exposes a separate menu or gameplay action set. Assign menu actions independently when the configurator provides them. |
| Keyboard-style bindings work inconsistently. | Check focus, text fields, launchers, overlays, and screens that may process input differently. Legacy translation cannot force a game to accept a key in every context. |
| Prompts keep changing between controller and mouse. | Look for simultaneous stick and mouse movement or another active input device. This behavior can originate in the demo’s mixed-input handling rather than in Steam’s binding list. |
| Text entry is unusable. | Test the demo’s own text-entry behavior and on-screen keyboard path. Valve’s Deck recommendations call for automatic on-screen keyboard behavior where text entry is needed, but that is guidance for developers, not a player-side guarantee. |
| Gyro or trackpad feels worse than a stick. | Use motion controls only where they improve camera or cursor precision. Compare both layouts in the same scene and keep the simpler layout if the demo handles motion input poorly. |
Steam Deck and developer compatibility expectations
Valve’s guidance for developers preparing games for Steam Deck recommends default controls that make all game functionality accessible and automatic on-screen keyboard behavior wherever text entry is required. It also recommends mixed-input support for games that use both mouse-style and joystick-style camera movement. These are design recommendations for game makers, not a promise that a player can repair missing game support by remapping every control.
The same distinction matters when a demo is an early build. A developer may not yet have exposed every action, supplied a complete Deck layout, or handled transitions between controller and mouse input. Steam’s configurator can often improve an awkward arrangement, but it cannot add game logic for an action the demo does not implement.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- The controller is powered, connected, and detected in Steam’s Controller settings.
- You opened the demo’s per-game configuration rather than changing only a global desktop or Big Picture profile.
- You identified whether the demo uses native actions or legacy mappings.
- Movement, camera, primary actions, confirm, cancel, pause, and other essential commands are reachable.
- Menu and gameplay contexts both work when the demo provides separate action sets.
- Text entry works if the demo requires it.
- The layout was tested after launching the actual demo from Steam.
- Any gyro, trackpad, mouse, or mixed-input behavior was checked in the scene where it matters.
What the official documentation establishes
The workflow above follows Steamworks Documentation pages titled “Getting Started for Players,” “Steam Input Devices,” “Getting your game ready for Steam Deck and Steam Machine,” and “Steam Deck FAQ,” accessed October 13, 2026. Those pages document the desktop and Big Picture routes, native and legacy configuration concepts, listed controller categories, and Deck-oriented input recommendations.
Steam does not present identical menus on every operating system, controller, Steam client build, or demo. The exact labels can therefore differ from the documented screenshots. Use the current equivalent menu item, and treat the in-demo test as the final check before deciding whether the controller experience is good enough for the full game.
