You can use Star Wars roleplaying books in a Dungeons & Dragons campaign as sources of settings, factions, characters, and adventure ideas—but their rules, statistics, and custom dice do not automatically work with D&D. Choose one D&D edition as the rules engine, then adapt only the Star Wars elements your campaign needs.
First identify which Star Wars roleplaying game you have
“Star Wars roleplaying game” refers to several different systems, not one set of rules. Current Edge Studio listings include lines originally published by Fantasy Flight Games, such as Edge of the Empire and Force and Destiny. Each has its own skills, combat rules, character options, equipment, and guidance for the game master. The Edge of the Empire core rulebook is a 448-page hardcover, and the Force and Destiny core rulebook is also a 448-page hardcover; the latter includes rules for skill checks, combat, and the Force.
Older Star Wars RPG books may use very different rules. Designer Sterling Hershey described West End Games’ d6 game, Wizards of the Coast’s d20 game, Saga Edition, and Fantasy Flight’s later narrative approach in a StarWars.com interview. He characterized the Wizards d20 game as more detailed and substantially based on D&D, and Fantasy Flight’s approach as a return to theatre of the mind. That history can help explain similarities, but it is not a compatibility guarantee for current D&D. Check the edition and system printed in the book before adapting any rule.

Decide which edition of D&D will resolve uncertain actions, combat, and character advancement. For example, the cited 2014 fifth-edition Basic Rules resolve an ability check with a d20 plus the relevant ability modifier, adding proficiency when it applies, and compare the total with a difficulty class. Use the rules for the edition you actually play; details differ between editions. The 2014 rules’ explanation of checks is in D&D Beyond’s Using Ability Scores.

Star Wars Roleplaying Dice use custom symbols to generate narrative outcomes, while the cited D&D rules use d20 tests, modifiers, and target numbers. The Star Wars dice pack was listed as containing 14 custom dice in StarWars.com’s July 9, 2014 preview. These are different resolution systems, so do not roll both for the same action by default. Pick one system to determine what happens. You can interpret a Star Wars narrative result as a D&D consequence when useful, but treat that as a game-master ruling rather than an automatic second roll.
Borrow Star Wars material in layers
Transfer the fiction directly
Locations, factions, relationships, character concepts, conflicts, and adventure premises can inspire a D&D session without changing its mechanics. Describe a vehicle as a narrative feature of the scene, for example, while using D&D’s existing rules to resolve an action involving it.

Map characters and obstacles to D&D options
When a Star Wars character concept needs a player-facing build, look first for a reasonable match among the D&D edition’s classes, backgrounds, species options, or subclasses. For an obstacle, choose a suitable D&D ability check or skill challenge. Keep D&D’s checks and character progression rather than importing Star Wars advancement rules wholesale.

Treat equipment as a campaign decision
Do not assume that blaster, armor, or vehicle statistics can be copied into D&D unchanged. Decide what role an item should play in the campaign, then define it using the chosen D&D rules—or keep it as descriptive fiction if it does not need its own mechanics.

Set explicit limits for Force-like abilities
Choose whether Force-like powers will be represented by existing D&D spells, class features, feats, or a restricted campaign option. Establish boundaries and costs consistently with the rest of the campaign. The cited sources provide no official D&D conversion or balance table for these powers, so any specific mapping is a homebrew ruling, not a published compatibility rule.
Choose books based on the game you want to run
| Your goal | How to use the book |
|---|---|
| Play a Star Wars RPG as written | Start with the core rulebook for the line and campaign you want. Edge Studio describes the Edge of the Empire book as the heart of that campaign, with rules, gear, adversaries, and an introductory adventure; its Force and Destiny core rulebook presents itself as the fundamental book for that campaign. |
| Run D&D with Star Wars atmosphere | Use Star Wars books for setting and adventure inspiration, and use D&D equivalents for anything that needs mechanics. For a Clone Wars-era campaign, Rise of the Separatists offers era material, player options, gear, vehicles, character profiles, and game-master guidance; leave its Star Wars RPG statistics behind unless you deliberately convert them. |
| Adapt older Star Wars d20 material | The historical relationship to D&D may make some conversion concepts more familiar, but check each rule against the specific D&D edition you are using. Hershey’s comments describe the Wizards d20 game; they do not establish blanket compatibility with current D&D. |
Do not mistake compatibility within Star Wars lines for D&D compatibility
Edge Studio’s June 9, 2022 announcement said its listed reprints had “no appreciable differences” from the prior Fantasy Flight Games versions and remained compatible with material FFG released. That statement concerns compatibility within those Star Wars RPG lines, not integration with D&D. Likewise, Rise of the Separatists is described as compatible with Star Wars RPG lines; that does not make its game statistics D&D rules.
