On the vivo X Fold6, choose Origin Workbench when one primary app should remain visible while you switch among supporting tasks. Choose Multi-Split Screen when you need several compatible apps displayed together. vivo documents up to four side-by-side apps, plus a Workbench arrangement built around one main task and four supporting tasks. The controls are enabled in Settings > Foldable Devices > Origin Workbench; the exact app behavior still depends on split-screen support in your installed software.
This guide follows vivo’s official X Fold6 instructions on its European product page. It also explains what is—and is not—documented about generic floating windows, so you do not apply instructions from an unrelated vivo model.
Pick the right multitasking mode
The two modes solve different problems. Origin Workbench is a switching workspace: one main task stays in view while supporting tasks are available to change between. Multi-Split Screen is a simultaneous workspace: several compatible apps remain on screen together.

“Run up to four apps side by side” is a vendor-stated capability, not a promise that every app can participate. The phone first works with apps that declare split-screen support.

Choose by workflow, not by the maximum number
If your priority is reading or editing one item while checking several others, Workbench is usually the less distracting choice. The main task remains the anchor and you switch supporting tasks as needed. If your task requires continuous visual comparison—for example, keeping two compatible information sources visible at the same time—Multi-Split Screen is the better fit.
The four-app figure is a ceiling, not a requirement. Two compatible apps may be easier to read than four narrow panes, especially when text entry or detailed controls are involved. Start with the smallest arrangement that supports the task, then add apps only when the selection interface offers them.
Enable and open Origin Workbench
The bottom-right gesture is available only after its toggle is enabled. Complete this once, then use the gesture whenever you want the Workbench.

- Tap Foldable Devices.
- Open Origin Workbench.
- Turn on the gesture option shown on that page.
- From anywhere the gesture is available, swipe inward from the bottom-right corner of the display. That launches Origin Workbench.
If the inward swipe does nothing, return to the Origin Workbench settings page and confirm that the toggle is still on. Start the gesture at the bottom-right edge rather than in the middle of the screen; an ordinary diagonal swipe from elsewhere is not the documented trigger.
What appears in Workbench
Workbench is intended to leave a main task in place while you move among supporting tasks. For example, you could keep a document as the main task and switch between a browser, calculator, and messages as supporting tasks. The actual apps available in the supporting area are determined by what is active and compatible on your phone; vivo does not publish a universal app list.
Before launching, open or activate the apps you expect to use. This gives the system a useful set of current tasks from which to build the workspace. It does not make an unsupported app compatible, but it can make the intended apps more likely to appear among the available choices.
Switch to Multi-Split Screen
There are two documented entry routes: change from Origin Workbench, or begin from the Home screen. The same physical actions are used, but the starting context affects what you see next.

Switch from Origin Workbench
- Open Origin Workbench with the bottom-right inward swipe.
- Slightly fold the X Fold6, or swipe upward with three fingers.
- The phone changes to Multi-Split Screen. It then works with the highest-priority active apps that support split screen, selecting up to four of them.
The three-finger action is an upward swipe using three fingers together. If the mode does not change, try the slight fold action instead and check that you began in Workbench rather than on another screen.

Start from the Home screen
- Return to the Home screen.
- Slightly fold the phone or swipe up with three fingers, using the action recognized by your current software.
- When the app-selection interface appears, choose the compatible apps you want in the multitasking arrangement.
- Launch the selected group.
Home-screen selection is useful when you want to choose a particular set rather than accept the currently active priorities. The phone can still exclude an app that does not support split screen.
Check the starting context
The slight-fold action and the three-finger upward swipe are alternatives, not steps that must be performed together. From Workbench, either can move you into Multi-Split Screen. From Home, either can bring up the app-selection flow. If a gesture appears to do nothing, first verify whether the phone is showing Home, Workbench, or an individual app, then repeat the action in that context.
Understand app compatibility and priority selection
Multi-Split Screen is not an unrestricted four-app grid. vivo says the system initially selects the four highest-priority active apps that support split screen. “Highest priority” is a system choice based on the apps currently active; it is not a published ranking that you can edit in a separate preference.

- An app can be compatible in one software release and behave differently after an update or regional firmware change.
- The product page does not enumerate supported apps or guarantee that every compatible app can be resized to every width.
- If an expected app is missing, start from Home and use the selection interface instead of relying on the automatic priority set.
When an app refuses to join, look for a message in the phone’s current multitasking or app-help screen. Do not assume that a missing app indicates a hardware fault; compatibility is an app-level requirement.
Compatibility also affects the practical number of panes. “Up to four” means four eligible apps can be arranged when the current software offers that many. A session with only two or three eligible apps is normal, and changing the order of active apps does not turn an ineligible app into an eligible one.
Resize the windows
Once several apps are open, the layout can be adjusted progressively. vivo describes the windows as resizable within a range, with the arrangement adapting in real time as you change the proportions.
Use the window controls
- Place your finger on the divider or resize control between the app areas, if one is shown.
- Drag it toward the app that needs more space.
- Release when the proportions suit the task. The neighboring windows reflow as you move the divider.
The exact divider appearance can vary with the number of apps and the installed OriginOS build. A control that stops moving has reached the permitted range for that arrangement or for one of the participating apps. Because resizing is progressive, make small adjustments and check readability after each movement rather than expecting an instant full-width swap.
Use the four-finger gesture
For a faster adjustment, place four fingers on the screen and pinch inward or spread outward. Pinching reduces a window’s share of the layout; spreading increases it. This gesture is a resizing shortcut, not a way to add an app that is incompatible with split screen.

If the four-finger gesture is not recognized, use the on-screen resize control. Touch input can be consumed by the app itself, and a window may have reached its minimum or maximum permitted size. A gesture that works in one layout may feel different after adding or removing a pane because the available ranges change.
Save combinations you use repeatedly
Saving a combination avoids rebuilding the same workspace every time. vivo documents two related places for saved or recent arrangements.
Add a Workbench combination to the Home screen
- Arrange the main and supporting tasks in Origin Workbench.
- Use the Workbench command for saving the current combination to the Home screen. The label can vary with the installed software version.
- Confirm the shortcut when prompted.
- On a later occasion, tap that Home-screen icon to reopen the preferred layout.
The saved icon represents the combination, not a guarantee that every app will reopen in exactly the same state. If an app has been removed, signed out, or changed its split-screen support, the phone may ask you to select a replacement. Treat the shortcut as a reusable starting arrangement rather than a snapshot of unsaved text, scroll position, or login state.

Use the Combination Library
The taskbar’s Combination Library keeps recent multitasking combinations. It can hold up to 20 combinations according to vivo’s product description. Open the taskbar while multitasking, choose the Combination Library, and tap an entry to relaunch it. When the library reaches its limit, remove an old entry before expecting a new one to remain available.
The Home-screen shortcut and the library serve slightly different habits. Use a Home-screen icon for a combination you launch deliberately and often. Use the taskbar library for recent arrangements you want close at hand while already multitasking. Neither location is described as unlimited storage, and the library’s stated capacity is 20 combinations.
What “floating windows” means on the X Fold6
The official X Fold6 product page documents Origin Workbench, Multi-Split Screen, resizing, and saved combinations. It does not document a separate, generic “open any app as a floating window” gesture or a dedicated floating-window settings path for this model.
That distinction matters because instructions written for another vivo phone may refer to a small-window feature that is absent, renamed, or implemented differently on the X Fold6. A vivo-hosted manual surfaced online does not establish that its small-window steps apply to this model: the manual’s device applicability is unknown.

If you specifically need a free-floating app, open the phone’s current Settings search and on-device help, then search for terms such as “floating window,” “small window,” or “multitasking.” Follow a menu only when it appears on your X Fold6 and matches your installed software version. If no such control is present, use Origin Workbench for switchable supporting tasks or Multi-Split Screen for simultaneous apps; those are the model-specific workflows vivo confirms.

Practical setups
Reference while writing
Put the writing app in the main Workbench position and keep a browser or reference app among the supporting tasks. This keeps the draft stable while you switch sources without rebuilding the whole layout. If you need to compare two pages continuously instead, move to Multi-Split Screen and select the exact compatible apps from Home.
Compare information side by side
Use Multi-Split Screen when two or more compatible apps must remain visible. Start from Home if you need to choose the exact apps, then resize the central controls so the comparison panes are wide enough to read. Four apps are possible, but a two- or three-app layout may leave more usable space for detailed content.
Monitor several live tasks
For a set of compatible apps that you check repeatedly, build the arrangement once, save it to the Home screen, and keep a second copy in the Combination Library for quick access from the taskbar. The library’s 20-combination capacity makes it better suited to a rotating set of workspaces than to unlimited archival storage.

If a saved combination no longer opens as expected, recreate it from Home rather than repeatedly tapping the old shortcut. Confirm that each app is still installed, signed in when required, and offered by the current compatibility screen. Save the corrected arrangement again if it is one you use regularly.
