Use split screen when you want two apps to share the display, and use a floating window when one app should remain above another. The exact commands depend on the tablet maker, Android version and app. On a Pixel Tablet, split screen starts in Overview, the Taskbar or a Home-screen shortcut. On supported Samsung Galaxy tablets, the equivalent movable overlay is called pop-up view. Some large-screen devices also offer Android desktop windowing, with several independent, resizable windows.
Not every tablet or app supports every mode. The steps below identify which instructions are specific to Pixel Tablet, Samsung Galaxy tablets or supported large-screen devices, so you can avoid searching for a control your model does not provide.
Choose the window mode that matches the job

Think of split screen as a fixed two-column layout, pop-up view as one app layered over another, PiP as a special video mode, and desktop windowing as a multi-window desktop. A keyboard, trackpad or external display can expand desktop windowing on devices that support it, but those accessories are not required for ordinary split screen.
Check support before troubleshooting
- Identify the tablet and software. Menus can differ between manufacturers, models, Android releases and even carrier software. Pixel Tablet instructions are not universal Android instructions.
- Check the app. Some apps explicitly do not support split screen. If the split or pop-up command is absent for one app but present for another, the app is a more likely constraint than a broken gesture.
- Separate features that sound alike. A video that shrinks into a movable PiP window is not the same as a Samsung pop-up window, and desktop windowing is not present on every large-screen device.
- Use the maker’s current help page for the exact model. Samsung notes that available screens and settings can vary by model, software version and carrier. Google likewise warns that desktop windowing is not available on all devices and that the experience may vary.
Pixel Tablet: start split screen
The Pixel Tablet offers three documented entry points. Use whichever is easiest to reach on your current navigation setup.

Method 1: From Overview (Recents)
- Open the first app.
- Swipe slowly up from the bottom edge and hold to enter Overview. If you use three-button navigation, tap the Overview button instead.
- Tap the app’s icon at the top of its Overview card.
- Choose Split.
- Select the second app from the launcher or recent-app choices. It fills the other half of the display.

Method 2: Drag from the Taskbar
- Open the first app.
- Swipe up slowly until the Taskbar appears.
- Press an app icon in the Taskbar and drag it to the left or right edge of the display.
- Release it when the split-screen placement is shown.
This method is useful when the app you want is already pinned or visible in the Taskbar. It does not change the requirement that the selected app support split screen.
Method 3: From the Home screen
- On the Home screen, long-press the app icon.
- Choose Split.
- Choose the second app.
If Split does not appear for an app, try another app to determine whether the limitation is app-specific.
Control a Pixel Tablet split-screen pair
Resize the two apps
Drag the middle divider toward either side. The app on the side receiving more space expands while the other contracts. This lets you give a document more room while keeping a narrow reference pane, or reverse the arrangement when the reference needs attention.
Swap their positions
Double-tap the center of the divider. The two apps exchange sides without closing either one.
Save a reusable app pair
On Pixel Tablet running Android 15 or later, you can save the current pair:
- Open Overview while both apps are already in split screen.
- Tap Save app pair below the pair.
- Launch the saved pair from the Home screen later, or add it to the Taskbar.
The save command is tied to the documented Android 15-and-later Pixel Tablet experience. If your tablet is on an earlier release, or the command is missing, continue launching the two apps separately.

Close one side or leave split screen
- Drag the divider all the way to the side of the app you want to close. The other app remains open.
- Return to the Home screen to exit split screen completely.
Samsung Galaxy tablets: use pop-up view
Samsung calls its movable overlay pop-up view. The exact screens and settings differ by model, Android/One UI version and carrier, but the Recents route is the clearest documented starting point.
Open an app in pop-up view from Recents
- Open the app you want to float.
- Open Recents.
- Tap the app’s icon above its recent-app preview.
- Tap Open in pop-up view.
The app appears in a window above the rest of the interface. If the command is absent, that app, model or software build may not support the mode.
Move and resize the window
- Drag the pop-up window itself to move it to another location.
- Drag a side of the window to change its size.
- Use the window controls to minimize, maximize or close it.
When minimized, the app becomes a floating icon. Tap that icon to reopen the window. This is useful when you need the underlying app unobstructed for a moment but do not want to close the floating app.
Start from the Edge panel
On Galaxy tablets that provide the relevant Edge-panel option, open the Edge panel and drag an app toward the center of the screen. Samsung documents this as another route into pop-up view, but the panel, gesture and available apps vary by device and software.

Picture-in-picture is a separate Android behavior for supported video apps. When you leave a compatible video app, playback may continue in a small movable video window. The app and the specific video content must support PiP; neither Samsung’s pop-up command nor ordinary split-screen support guarantees it. If a video simply closes or stays full-screen, check that service’s own PiP support and settings rather than looking for a pop-up-window control.
Android desktop windowing on supported large screens
Desktop windowing provides separate app windows that you can move and resize instead of limiting you to two columns. Google explicitly says, “This feature isn’t available on all devices, and the experience may vary.” Treat it as an optional device capability, not a standard Android tablet menu. Open a window from full screen or split screen
- With an app in full screen or split screen, drag down the app’s top handle.
- Use the window options in the app header to enter the desktop arrangement, when those options are offered.
Use the keyboard shortcut
With a physical keyboard connected, press Action + Ctrl + Down arrow to invoke desktop windowing on a supported device. “Action” refers to the keyboard’s designated Action key; the exact key labeling can differ between keyboards.

Move and resize windows
- Drag a window by its header bar to reposition it.
- Drag a corner to resize it with touch.
- With a mouse, pen or trackpad, you can also resize from an edge.
Keyboard and trackpad behavior
On a supported device connected to an external keyboard and trackpad, apps open in desktop windowing automatically according to Google’s documented behavior. This does not make the feature available on an otherwise unsupported tablet.

Depending on the device and its settings, connecting an external display can mirror the tablet or start a separate desktop session. Google documents that windows can move between the tablet and a connected display, but they cannot be moved onto a display that is currently running a full-screen app. If the second screen shows only a mirror, look for the device’s display-mode setting rather than assuming desktop windowing failed.
Understand what each mode can and cannot do
Split screen is the predictable choice when both tasks need steady space. It keeps two app panes visible and gives you one divider to adjust, but it is still a two-app arrangement. A third app will normally replace one of those panes unless the device offers a different windowing mode. The divider is therefore a layout control, not a way to create unlimited columns.
Pop-up view is more flexible spatially because the overlay can be moved over the underlying app and resized from a side. On Samsung, minimizing does not close the app; it turns the window into a floating icon that you can tap again. That behavior is different from leaving an app in split screen and different from PiP, whose controls and availability belong to the video app.
Desktop windowing is the broadest option, but it has the strictest device requirement. It is intended for supported large screens and can expose separate headers, corners and (with a mouse, pen or trackpad) edge handles. A keyboard shortcut or connected keyboard and trackpad can make entry easier, yet an accessory cannot add desktop windowing to a tablet that does not implement it.

Troubleshoot common failures
The split or pop-up command is missing
- Try a different app. Missing support in only one app usually indicates an app compatibility restriction.
- Confirm you are following the instructions for your manufacturer. Pixel’s Split command and Samsung’s Open in pop-up view are not interchangeable labels.
- Check the tablet’s software version and the manufacturer’s current support page. Samsung says settings can vary by model, software and carrier.
The second app will not open
Close the attempted layout, then select a known compatible app from the available choices. If the second app never appears, the tablet may restrict that app from split screen or the feature may not be implemented on that model.
The floating window is in the way
On a Galaxy tablet, drag it to another area, resize it from a side, or tap minimize to turn it into a floating icon. Tap the icon when you need it again. If you are using PiP, move the video window instead; PiP controls are governed by the video app.

Desktop windowing does not appear
Verify that the tablet is a supported large-screen device. Try dragging down the app’s top handle or opening the app-header window options. With a physical keyboard, try Action + Ctrl + Down arrow. If none of these controls exists, Google’s availability warning applies: the feature is not universal.
An external display mirrors instead of extending
Mirroring and a separate desktop session are both documented possibilities. Check the tablet’s display settings and whether the attached display is occupied by a full-screen app; windows cannot move onto a display running that mode.

Reference-and-entry workflow
- Open the reference app first.
- Enter split screen and select the writing, form or note-taking app second.
- Drag the divider until the entry area is comfortable.
- On Pixel Tablet with Android 15 or later, save the pair if you will repeat the same combination.
Utility-over-main-app workflow
- Open the main app.
- On a supported Galaxy tablet, launch the utility through Recents > app icon > Open in pop-up view.
- Move or resize the utility window so the main app remains usable.
- Minimize it to a floating icon when it is temporarily unnecessary.
Large-screen workspace workflow
- Confirm desktop windowing is supported on the tablet.
- Open the required apps and enter desktop windowing using the top handle, header options or keyboard shortcut.
- Arrange windows by their header bars and resize from corners or edges.
- If using an external display, select the appropriate mirrored or separate-session mode in the device settings.

Does minimizing a Samsung pop-up close the app?
No. Minimizing changes the window into a floating icon. Tap that icon to reopen the app window; closing it uses the close control instead.
Is picture-in-picture the same as a floating window?
No. PiP is a separate behavior for supported video apps and content. A compatible video can continue in a small movable window after you leave it, but ordinary pop-up or split-screen support does not guarantee PiP.
Can every Android tablet use desktop windowing?

On a supported device, drag down an app’s top handle from full or split screen, use the app header’s window options, or press Action + Ctrl + Down arrow with a physical keyboard. A supported tablet with an external keyboard and trackpad can open apps in desktop windowing automatically.
Can I move desktop windows to an external monitor?
