To hedge a portfolio with S&P 500 puts, keep the portfolio and buy cash-settled SPX put options sized to the market exposure you want to protect. The put sets a minimum value for the hedged exposure below its strike, after the premium and trading costs, while the portfolio can still participate in gains above the strike. You must choose the hedge size, strike, expiration and roll schedule together; an unsuitable choice can leave losses uncovered or make the insurance too expensive.
What an SPX protective put does
A protective put combines ownership of a stock portfolio with a long put on a related stock index. Cboe describes the position as owning or buying a portfolio of stocks and buying corresponding stock-index puts to hedge part of the portfolio’s downside. For an S&P 500-oriented portfolio, the index option is the cash-settled SPX put.
An option gives its owner the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell an underlying asset at a fixed price on or before a specified date. For a put, that right is the ability to receive value when the underlying is below the strike. Because SPX is an index rather than a deliverable share basket, settlement is in cash. The current contract specification at your broker controls the settlement value, multiplier, exercise style and other terms.

At expiration, the basic value of a long SPX put is generally calculated as max(strike − final index settlement, 0) × contract multiplier. The portfolio loses value as the index falls, while the put gains value below the strike. The combination establishes a floor for the hedged exposure, less the premium, commissions and any execution costs. If the index rises, the put can expire unused and the portfolio retains its upside, also less those costs.

Why the hedge may not track your portfolio
SPX puts hedge broad U.S. large-cap market exposure, not every source of portfolio risk. A portfolio concentrated in a few companies, international stocks, small-cap shares, a particular factor, illiquid holdings or large cash positions can move differently from the S&P 500. That difference is basis risk.
Beta is useful for estimating how sensitively the portfolio has moved relative to the index, but it is not fixed. Correlations and betas can change during a sell-off, after a portfolio rebalance or when the portfolio’s sector mix changes. A hedge that looked correctly sized in calm markets can therefore be too large or too small when protection is needed.
Design the hedge step by step
1. Define what you are protecting
Write down the portion of the portfolio to hedge and the dates during which the protection matters. You might want to protect the entire equity allocation through a known event, only the portion exposed to broad U.S. equities, or a defined dollar amount of market risk. A hedge objective should also state the loss you are willing to absorb before protection begins.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Exposure: identify the account or sleeve, its current market value and the assets that are reasonably represented by the S&P 500.
- Hedge fraction: decide whether to hedge all of that exposure or only a percentage.
- Time horizon: choose the period for which a floor is required and whether the position will be renewed.
- Budget: set a maximum acceptable premium and trading-cost burden before selecting a strike.
2. Estimate the number of contracts
Exact sizing requires the current portfolio value, the portfolio’s estimated beta to the S&P 500, the current SPX level and the contract multiplier shown by your broker. A simple starting approximation is:
contracts ≈ (portfolio value × estimated beta × hedge fraction) ÷ (SPX level × contract multiplier)
Round only after considering whether the resulting position slightly over- or under-hedges. For example, a portfolio with a beta above one requires more index notional than a same-sized portfolio with a beta of one for an equivalent broad-market hedge. The formula is an estimate, not a guarantee: it ignores changes in beta, dividends, cash flows, non-linear portfolio behavior and the selected strike.
Recalculate when the portfolio value, composition or SPX level changes materially. If the hedge is intended to protect a specific dollar loss rather than a percentage move, model the portfolio and put payoffs together instead of relying on a single beta estimate.

3. Select the strike as your deductible
The strike determines when the put begins to offset index losses. An at-the-money or near-the-money put starts responding sooner and normally costs more. An out-of-the-money put costs less but leaves the first part of a decline uncovered; protection starts only after the index has fallen far enough below the current level to reach the strike.
Think of the strike as an insurance deductible:
- Higher strike: a smaller deductible, earlier protection and a larger premium.
- Lower strike: a larger deductible, cheaper insurance and more initial portfolio loss before the put helps.
- Multiple strikes: a spread can target a defined range of losses, but protection below the short-put strike ends.
Do not choose a strike solely because its quoted premium looks inexpensive. Compare the uncovered first-loss range with the loss you are actually prepared to take, and check whether the option’s liquidity is adequate for entry and exit.
4. Match expiration to the protection period
Choose an expiration that covers the period in which the floor is needed. Longer-dated options generally carry higher premiums, but they can reduce the number of rolls required. Shorter expirations may fit a brief risk window but require more frequent decisions and expose you to changing premiums at each renewal.
Decide in advance what will trigger a roll. Possible rules include replacing the put a set number of days before expiration, rolling when the option reaches a specified remaining term, or renewing only when the portfolio’s risk objective changes. A roll is a new trade: its cost depends on the then-current index level, implied volatility, time remaining, liquidity and bid-ask spread.

Before submitting an order, confirm the current SPX contract specification with your broker and the applicable disclosure documents. Check:
- cash-settlement method and the index value used for settlement;
- contract multiplier and the notional value represented by one contract;
- exercise style and the consequences of holding through expiration;
- trading hours, expiration calendar and holiday adjustments;
- bid-ask spread, displayed size and expected execution quality;
- commissions, exchange fees and the broker approval level required for long options; and
- the tax treatment that applies in your jurisdiction and account type.
Use limit orders when appropriate, understand whether your order can fill in pieces, and record the premium and all fees so the hedge’s true cost is measurable.
How the payoff changes with the strike
Suppose an investor owns a portfolio intended to track the S&P 500 and buys one put for a defined expiration. If the index finishes above the strike, the put has no intrinsic value at expiration and the investor loses the premium paid. If the index finishes below the strike, the put’s cash settlement offsets part of the portfolio’s index-linked loss. The offset grows as the index falls until the option’s notional and the portfolio’s actual behavior diverge.

An out-of-the-money put creates a band of unprotected loss between the current index level and the strike. That band is not a defect; it is the price trade-off used to reduce the premium. A near-the-money put narrows the band but transfers more of the portfolio’s return to the insurer through the premium.
Because an SPX put is an index hedge, the portfolio can lose more or less than the option gains even when the index reaches the strike. Sector concentration, company-specific news, currency exposure, small-cap or international holdings and changes in beta all contribute to that mismatch.
What determines the economic cost
Premium and implied volatility
The premium is paid whether or not the put is used. Premiums generally rise when implied volatility rises, so insurance can be most expensive when investors are already demanding protection. A quote observed on one day is not a durable cost assumption; option prices change continuously.
Time and rolling
Longer expirations generally cost more in total premium. Repeated short-dated rolls can also create substantial cumulative cost, especially when volatility or the index level changes between rolls. Evaluate the annualized or period cost of the complete roll plan rather than the price of one contract.
Trading friction
Commissions, exchange fees and the bid-ask spread reduce the hedge’s payoff. Wide spreads matter at both entry and exit, and a forced roll near expiration can be more expensive than a planned transaction in a liquid series. Include these amounts in the premium budget.

A protective put keeps upside participation but not for free. The premium lowers returns when the market rises or remains flat. A collar can reduce that cash expense by giving up some upside instead; a put-spread collar can reduce it further by limiting deep-loss protection.
Lower-cost structures and their trade-offs
Protective put
You own the portfolio and buy an SPX put. The first-loss level is the selected strike, the maximum protected loss depends on the strike and notional, and upside remains open after costs. This is the clearest structure when preserving upside is more important than minimizing premium.

Collar
You own the portfolio, buy a put and sell an out-of-the-money call. The call premium offsets part or all of the put premium, but gains above the call strike are surrendered. The collar exchanges upside participation for a lower protection cost. The call can be assigned or otherwise create obligations under the applicable contract terms, so verify those terms before trading.
Put-spread collar
You buy a higher-strike put, sell a lower-strike put and sell an out-of-the-money call. The short put limits protection below its strike, while the short call caps gains above its strike. This three-leg structure can reduce the net premium further, but it leaves both a deep-loss region and an upside ceiling.
Cboe’s CLLZ illustration uses a monthly SPX put spread covering approximately 2.5% to 5% below the index level and sells a monthly out-of-the-money call to cover the spread cost. It is a methodology example, not a recommendation or a forecast of current premiums.
How the structures compare
| Structure | First-loss level | Protection in a severe decline | Upside | Premium profile | Operational complexity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unhedged portfolio | No deductible; all losses are retained | None from the option | Open | No option premium | Low |
| Protective put | Strike determines when protection starts | Continues according to the put strike and notional | Open above the strike, less premium and costs | Highest upfront cash cost among these hedges for the same protected exposure | Moderate |
| Collar | Put strike determines the deductible | Depends on the long put | Capped above the short call strike | Call premium offsets part or all of put premium | Higher; two option legs plus the portfolio |
| Put-spread collar | Long-put strike determines the first protection point | Limited below the short-put strike | Capped above the short call strike | Often lower because both upside and deep-loss protection are sold | Highest; three option legs plus the portfolio |
Benchmark illustrations are not personal recommendations
Cboe’s PPUT benchmark illustrates a long S&P 500 position combined with a monthly 5% out-of-the-money SPX put. The example shows how a regularly renewed insurance rule can be defined, but it does not establish that a 5% strike or monthly schedule is suitable for your portfolio.
The CLLZ illustration uses the monthly put-spread collar described above. Its rules demonstrate the trade between a defined protection band, a call-funded premium and capped upside. Both illustrations were described by Cboe Global Markets in a benchmark-indices article published about 2021; their historical methodology should not be confused with a current option quote or a promised result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Risks that are easy to overlook
Basis risk
The SPX can rise while an individual stock, sector fund or international holding falls. Conversely, the portfolio can outperform the index during a decline, leaving the put’s gain smaller than the portfolio’s loss or making the hedge appear unnecessarily large.
Strike and gap risk
A market can move through an out-of-the-money strike quickly. The put still provides value below the strike, but the portfolio may suffer a substantial loss before the chosen deductible is reached. A strike does not guarantee that the account value will equal a particular floor.

Volatility and mark-to-market risk
Before expiration, the put’s market value changes with the index, implied volatility and time remaining. It can gain value even before intrinsic value appears, or lose value after a rebound. Selling or rolling based only on the displayed profit or loss can produce a different result from holding through the intended horizon.
Liquidity and execution risk
A theoretical payoff is not the same as an executable price. Thin markets, wide spreads or a large order can make the actual premium materially different from the screen quote. Check depth and spread before entering and when closing or rolling.
Contract and tax risk
Settlement procedures, exercise conventions, account permissions and tax rules differ by product, broker and jurisdiction. Read the current standardized-options disclosure from the Options Clearing Corporation and the Securities and Exchange Commission, and obtain qualified tax or investment advice for questions specific to your circumstances.

Monitor the hedge after it is opened
A hedge is a process, not a set-and-forget label. Keep a written record of the portfolio value, estimated beta, SPX level, strike, expiration, number of contracts, premium, fees and intended coverage. Review the position when:
- the portfolio is deposited to, withdrawn from or materially rebalanced;
- the equity allocation or sector mix changes;
- the index moves far enough that the strike no longer represents the intended deductible;
- expiration approaches or the planned roll window opens;
- implied volatility changes enough to alter the cost of renewal; or
- the portfolio’s behavior diverges from the S&P 500.
If the hedge is too expensive, possible design changes include accepting a lower strike, hedging a smaller fraction, using a collar or limiting protection to a shorter period. If the portfolio is losing more than the put is gaining, investigate basis risk, contract sizing and the distance to the strike before adding contracts. If execution is poor, compare another expiration or strike with better liquidity rather than assuming the model price is available.
A practical decision checklist
- State the portfolio sleeve, dollar value, estimated beta and percentage to hedge.
- Define the protection dates and the loss you are willing to absorb before the hedge responds.
- Calculate approximate SPX notional using the current index level and your broker’s multiplier.
- Compare strikes by deductible, premium and liquidity; do not treat the cheapest strike as automatically best.
- Compare expirations by total premium, roll frequency and the date on which protection ends.
- Model the combined portfolio-and-put result for a flat market, a moderate decline and a severe decline.
- Check settlement, exercise style, trading hours, fees, approval requirements and tax treatment.
- Set a roll or review rule before the market moves, and document what would cause you to change it.
When an SPX put is—and is not—the right tool
An SPX protective put is most coherent when the main risk is a broad U.S. large-cap decline, preserving upside matters, and the investor can fund recurring premiums. It is less precise for a concentrated or internationally diversified portfolio whose returns do not track the S&P 500. A collar or put-spread collar may fit a strict premium budget, but each reduces either upside or the depth of protection.
No strike, expiration or contract count can be selected responsibly without current portfolio and option-market information. Treat the strategy as an educational framework, verify live contract details and disclosures, and consult a qualified adviser for suitability, tax and execution questions.
