Discord’s built-in Soundboard plays short audio clips to everyone in the same voice channel. It works without a bot, virtual audio cable, microphone routing, or another app. You can use Discord’s preset clips, upload custom sounds from a desktop computer, favorite frequently used clips, and control how loudly you hear them.
This guide covers desktop, browser, and mobile playback, custom uploads, permissions, Nitro requirements, sound limits, troubleshooting, and the question of which soundboard is best for Discord.
What is Discord Soundboard?
Discord Soundboard is a voice-channel feature that plays short audio clips directly into a Discord voice call. Other people in the channel can hear the clip, provided they are not deafened and have not locally muted Soundboard audio.
It also works in one-to-one and group DM voice calls, although Nitro is required to use accessible Soundboard sounds across other servers and in DM calls.

Discord Soundboard permissions explained
Several permissions control different Soundboard actions. Being able to play a sound does not automatically give someone permission to upload, edit, or delete sounds.
| Action | Required permission |
|---|---|
| Play a server sound | Use Soundboard; Discord’s playback requirements also include Speak |
| Play a sound from another server | Use Soundboard and Use External Sounds |
| Add a custom sound | Create Expressions |
| Edit or remove custom sounds | Manage Expressions |
Enable Soundboard for a server role
- Open the server menu.
- Go to Server Settings > Roles.
- Select the role.
- Open Permissions.
- Enable Use Soundboard.
Enable or disable it for one voice channel
- Open the voice channel’s settings with Edit Channel > Permissions.
- Select a role or individual member.
- Set Use Soundboard to allow or deny.
Another desktop route is to right-click the channel, select Permissions, open Advanced Settings, and configure the role-specific override.
How to manage or delete Soundboard sounds
- Open the server menu.
- Go to Server Settings > Soundboard.
- Find the sound in the list.
- Click the X next to it to remove it.
You may be able to manage your own uploaded sound with the relevant creation permission, but editing or removing sounds created by other users requires Manage Expressions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDoes Discord Soundboard require Nitro?
No, Nitro is not required to play a server’s own Soundboard sounds inside that server. Nitro is required for accessible Soundboard sounds used across other servers and in DM or Group DM voice calls. Nitro is also required for Soundboard entrance sounds.
A frequently repeated claim says Nitro is required to upload custom sounds. Discord’s current support documentation instead identifies Create Expressions as the permission needed to add sounds. Nitro and uploading are separate requirements.
Discord Soundboard slots and boosts
The current slot limits listed by Discord are:
| Server status | Sound slots |
|---|---|
| Base server | 8 preloaded slots |
| Tier 1 Boost | 24 slots |
| Tier 2 Boost | 36 slots |
| Tier 3 Boost | 48 slots |
A sound can become unavailable if the server loses enough Server Boosts. Discord exposes an available status for sounds, so a previously usable clip may stop being available after a boost-level change.

How to change Soundboard volume or mute it
- Open User Settings.
- Select Voice & Video.
- Find the Soundboard section.
- Adjust Soundboard Volume.
This setting controls how loudly you hear Soundboard clips and syncs across your devices. Set it to 0% to mute Soundboard audio locally.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Changing your volume to 0% does not mute the sound for other participants. They can still hear clips played into the channel. Discord continues to show the associated sound emoji to the user who muted Soundboard audio.
How to set a Discord entrance sound
An entrance sound plays when you join a server voice channel. This feature requires Nitro.
- Open User Settings > Voice & Video > Soundboard.
- Under Sound Effects, click the pencil icon.
- Choose a global sound, or select a server from the dropdown for a server-specific sound.
- Click the pencil icon, choose the sound, and click the X in the upper-right corner. Discord saves the setting automatically.
An entrance sound can play when you join with your microphone muted, as long as Soundboard is enabled. It does not play when you join deafened.
Why is the Soundboard icon missing?
The Soundboard control normally appears after you join a voice channel. If it is missing, check these conditions:
Recommended Free Tools
- You are not currently in a voice channel.
- The channel denies your role or member account the Use Soundboard permission.
- You are checking the mobile interface without expanding the voice toolbar.
On desktop, join the channel first, then look for the confetti icon or Soundboard control in the voice controls.
Why can’t I play a Soundboard sound?
Check the following:
- Confirm that you have Use Soundboard in the current channel.
- If the sound belongs to another server, check Use External Sounds.
- Make sure you have joined the correct voice channel.
- Check whether the clip is unavailable because the server lost boosts.
- Ask the listener to check their own Soundboard volume and deafened status.
A user may see the Soundboard panel but still be unable to play a clip if the channel permission denies playback. Playback and upload permissions are separate.

Why can’t I hear a Soundboard sound?
If other participants hear the clip but you do not, you may be deafened or your personal Soundboard volume may be set to 0%. Go to User Settings > Voice & Video > Soundboard and raise the volume. A deafened user will not hear Soundboard playback.
Why was my custom sound rejected?
Check the upload against Discord’s technical limits:
- The file must be no larger than 512 KB.
- The duration must not exceed 5.2 seconds.
- The audio must be MP3 or Ogg data accepted by Discord.
- The name must contain between 2 and 32 characters.
Converting the clip to a short, low-bitrate MP3 can reduce its file size, but do not rely on the file extension alone: Discord validates the uploaded audio data.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is there a Soundboard keyboard shortcut or slash command?
On Windows, Discord’s Game Overlay shortcut Ctrl + ` opens Soundboard access in the overlay.
Discord’s current user documentation does not provide a user-facing slash command for playing a Soundboard sound. Normal playback is performed through the Soundboard interface. Developers can use Discord’s Soundboard API, where a sound is identified with sound_id; cross-server playback also uses source_guild_id and requires the relevant voice permissions.
What is the best soundboard for Discord?
For ordinary Discord use, the best choice is Discord’s native Soundboard. It is integrated into voice channels, so it does not require a bot, virtual audio cable, microphone loopback, or third-party soundboard application. It also provides the permissions, favorites, previews, volume controls, server slots, and custom uploads described above.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Third-party soundboards and audio-routing tools are separate products. They may be useful for broader audio production or routing computer audio into a call, but Discord’s official documentation does not establish one as the objectively best third-party option. They can also introduce extra setup and failure points, such as incorrect input selection, audio feedback, latency, or other participants hearing desktop audio that was not intended for the call.

Useful Windows shortcut
If you use Discord’s Windows Game Overlay, press Ctrl + ` to open Soundboard access while the overlay is active. For regular desktop and browser use, the confetti button in the voice controls remains the main playback route.
