To stay hidden in a stealth game, first learn what that game’s guards react to: visibility, sound, movement, distance, or some combination. Pause in a safe spot, watch a patrol, and test the game’s cues before crossing. Move during a safe opening, use shadow only when the game’s behavior supports it, and if a guard spots you, leave the last place they saw you rather than returning to it.

How do I stay hidden in stealth games?

There is no single stealth rule that works across every game. Darkness may reduce visibility without making you invisible; crouching may reduce the chance of being seen without silencing footsteps; and a suspicious sound may prompt investigation in one game but trigger a different response in another. Treat each game as a system to learn, not a set of genre-wide guarantees.

A useful routine is: scout, observe, test, cross, then relocate if detected. Look for the game’s own feedback—such as changes in a guard’s behavior, a visibility or suspicion indicator, or a search response—and use it to adjust one variable at a time. If you change stance, speed, route, and timing all at once, it is harder to tell what actually affected detection.

What to observe before moving

  • Where guards walk, which way they face, and whether they pause or turn at predictable points.
  • Whether they react to your movement, a sound, or a glimpse of you—and whether the reaction is mild suspicion, investigation, or active pursuit.
  • Which surfaces or routes appear exposed or noisy, and whether cover or darkness changes the game’s feedback.
  • What happens when a guard loses sight of you: does the guard search a particular location, resume a route, or call for help?

In a 2024-11-21 overview of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Ubisoft describes Observe and Eagle Vision as ways to reveal or track information in that game. These are examples of title-specific scouting tools, not features to expect in every stealth game. The overview describes mechanics in a work-in-progress build, so treat it as a description of that game’s design rather than a universal rule.

How do I avoid guards hearing me?

Assume sound is a detection channel whenever the game gives you reason to: a guard reacts to a noise, movement changes their behavior, or the game provides sound-related feedback. Then slow down near guards and on surfaces that appear to produce more noise. Watch for a response before continuing.

In a PlayStation.Blog interview about Thief, developer Roy explained that players could control the sound they emit through movement speed, and that the surface they walk on also affects it. That makes speed and footing useful variables to test in that game; it does not establish that every game models sound the same way. A low stance may also reduce visibility or detection risk in some titles without making movement silent.

A practical sound check

  1. Stop at a safe distance. Watch the nearest guard and note their current behavior before you move.
  2. Change one movement variable. Try a slower pace or lower stance if the game offers one, then observe whether the guard’s behavior or a sound indicator changes.
  3. Pay attention to the surface. If the game has different floor types, compare your movement on them only when you can do so without walking into a guard’s view.
  4. Use the quietest approach the game supports. If the guard reacts to your movement, stop and wait rather than assuming that crouching or a particular route will eliminate sound.

Do not invent a sound radius or assume that a noise is safe just because it did not trigger an immediate alarm. The documented examples establish that movement speed and surface can affect sound in Thief, and that noise can draw guards to investigate in Metal Gear 2; they do not provide a shared distance, threshold, or guaranteed outcome across games.

Do shadows actually hide you from enemies?

Sometimes they help, but darkness is not a reliable promise of invisibility. The important distinction is between reducing visibility and becoming fully hidden. A shadow may make you harder to notice while your position, movement, or distance still gives you away.

In the same PlayStation.Blog interview, Thief developer Roy said: “Being in the shadow reduces the visibility of the player, but the position of the player, their movement, and the distance all change how the AI perceives Garrett.” In other words, shadow is one factor in that game’s perception model. It is not a guarantee that an enemy cannot see you.

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows overview describes nighttime shadow pockets as hiding spots for Naoe. That is a specific mechanic attributed to that game, and the overview is dated 2024-11-21 and based on a work-in-progress build. Do not assume those hiding spots—or the same effect of darkness—exist in another title.

How to test whether a shadow is useful

  • Check for an in-game visibility indicator or other explicit feedback, if available.
  • Stay still briefly and observe whether a guard’s attention changes.
  • Compare what happens when you move within the shadow with what happens when you remain still; movement may matter as much as the location.
  • Consider position and distance as well as lighting. If a guard has a direct view or is close, do not rely on darkness alone.

If the game does not communicate visibility clearly, test cautiously from cover and use what guards actually do as evidence. A single uneventful crossing does not prove that the shadow makes you invisible; the guard’s facing, distance, timing, or other conditions may have mattered.

How do I get past patrols without being spotted?

Watch a patrol long enough to recognize its route, facing, and pauses. Cross only when the guard has passed or turned away and you have room to stop if the route changes. If an alternate path offers better cover or avoids a noisy surface, compare it with the direct route rather than treating speed as the only measure of safety.

Read the patrol before crossing

  1. Find a safe observation point. Stop outside the guard’s immediate view and identify where the patrol goes.
  2. Track a full movement cycle. Notice turns, pauses, facing direction, and any point where the guard’s attention is elsewhere. Do not assume a route is fixed after seeing only one movement.
  3. Look for a crossing window. Choose a moment when the guard has passed or turned away, with cover or a safe place to stop along the route.
  4. Cross deliberately. Use a slower pace or lower stance if that game indicates it reduces detection. Avoid unnecessary movement that could draw attention.
  5. Pause after reaching cover. Check the guard’s reaction before moving again; a change in behavior may mean the crossing was noticed.

Patrols may respond to sound rather than simply following their route. The Metal Gear 2 manual describes guards leaving their routes to investigate noise and returning afterward. That gives noise a possible use as a distraction in that game, but it is not a promise that every guard will be diverted safely or that another game’s patrol will return in the same way. Only rely on a distraction after observing how the current game responds.

What do suspicion and detection indicators mean?

Use the game’s indicators as feedback about escalation, not as universal symbols with universal thresholds. Some games distinguish a suspicious sound or glimpse from an active search or combat; another game may communicate those states differently or provide no comparable marker.

A Bethesda detection-marker support page describes detection feedback, but the page inspected does not identify a game title. Its descriptions therefore should not be assigned to a named game or treated as a genre-wide standard. Unity documentation also describes detection and investigation behavior, but an engine’s example behavior is not proof that every game made with that engine uses the same system.

Respond to behavior, not just icons

  • A guard continues their normal route: keep observing; do not assume the area is safe solely because there is no visible alert.
  • A guard changes attention or investigates: stop exposing yourself and wait in cover. Avoid adding another noise or movement while the guard is searching.
  • A guard actively searches or pursues: prioritize breaking line of sight and relocating instead of trying to retrace the same exposed route.
  • The game signals combat or a wider alarm: treat the situation as escalated and use the game’s own recovery options rather than assuming a short wait will reset it.

These are decision cues, not fixed definitions for particular icons. Learn what the current title means by its indicators and enemy behavior before relying on them for a risky crossing.

What should I do after a guard spots me?

Break line of sight, then move away from the place where the guard last saw you. Losing sight does not necessarily end detection: the guard may search the last-known area. Move to cover elsewhere and wait until the search behavior subsides before resuming your route.

Unity detection documentation describes investigation around a last-known position, and Konami’s guidance for Metal Gear Solid V describes enemies searching after losing sight of the player. Konami’s guidance also says that faster movement makes the player easier to spot and that a lower stance reduces spotting risk. These are useful examples of how a search and movement risk can work in those systems, not assurances that every title uses the same rules.

Recovery sequence

  1. Break the guard’s view. Use nearby cover or a route that removes you from sight. Avoid stopping in a place the guard can still see.
  2. Leave the last-seen area. Move to a different covered position instead of returning to the point where you were spotted.
  3. Wait and observe. Watch whether the enemy continues searching, returns to a route, or escalates the alert. Do not resume simply because the guard is momentarily out of view.
  4. Choose a new route or timing. Once the game’s search behavior subsides, use a different crossing window or approach if the original one is still exposed.

Do not assume that breaking sight instantly resets suspicion, or that every guard searches alone. Check whether the current game shows a continuing search or calls others into the area before you move again.

How to learn a new game’s stealth rules

When a game’s mechanics are unclear, treat the first safe encounter as a small experiment rather than a speed test. Make one controlled change at a time, notice the enemy’s response, and avoid turning an unverified assumption into a plan for a high-risk crossing.

  1. Identify the available feedback. Look for visibility or suspicion indicators, sound cues, tutorial prompts, and changes in guard posture or route.
  2. Test movement cautiously. Compare walking with a slower pace or lower stance where the game permits it, without changing multiple variables at once.
  3. Test cover and lighting separately. Observe whether remaining still in cover or shadow changes enemy behavior, then test movement from that position only if safe.
  4. Watch one patrol cycle. Record mentally where the guard turns, pauses, or responds to noises before attempting a crossing.
  5. Learn the search response. If detection occurs, note where the guard searches and how long their behavior remains escalated before trying the area again.

Official examples illustrate why this method matters: Thief ties perception to shadow, position, movement, and distance, while its sound model also responds to speed and surface; Metal Gear 2 documents guards investigating noise; and Metal Gear Solid V guidance links faster movement to greater spotting risk and lower stance to reduced risk. These describe different games, not one shared stealth formula.

How the documented examples differ

Game or source What the documented mechanic supports What not to assume
Thief developer interview, PlayStation.Blog, 2013-09-24 Shadow reduces visibility; position, movement, and distance also affect perception. Movement speed and walking surface affect emitted sound. That shadow makes the player invisible, or that other games use the same perception or sound model.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows overview, Ubisoft, 2024-11-21 Observe and Eagle Vision reveal or track information in that game; nighttime shadow pockets are described as hiding spots for Naoe. That another game has these tools or mechanics. The overview describes a work-in-progress build.
Metal Gear 2 manual Guards can leave patrol routes to investigate noise and return afterward. That every noise distracts every guard, or that all games return guards to patrol in the same way.
Metal Gear Solid V guidance from Konami Faster movement makes the player easier to spot; a lower stance reduces spotting risk. Enemies may search after losing sight. That crouching is silent or that movement and recovery work identically in other games.
Bethesda detection-marker support page Describes detection-marker feedback and stages. A title-specific threshold: the page inspected does not identify the game title.
Unity detection documentation Describes investigation behavior around a last-known position. That every game built with Unity uses that behavior or the same search logic.

Are there universal stealth numbers or rankings?

No general sound radius, visibility distance, success rate, or cross-game stealth ranking is established by the official examples described here. The usable evidence is about particular mechanics in particular games, not comparable measurements under a shared test. Use the current game’s feedback and observed guard behavior rather than relying on a made-up distance or a ranking that treats different systems as equivalent.
