Ecommerce SMS marketing works best as a permission-based channel for timely, relevant messages—not as a replacement for email, order updates, or every other customer communication. Use it for moments such as product launches, subscriber offers, limited-time promotions, and back-in-stock alerts. The essentials are SMS-specific consent, clear expectations, restrained targeting, and campaign measurement.
What ecommerce SMS marketing is—and what it is for
SMS marketing sends promotional text messages to customers who have agreed to receive them. It can complement other channels when a message is short, time-sensitive, and useful to the recipient. Shopify distinguishes promotional campaigns from order and shipping notifications, which it manages separately: Shopify’s SMS marketing documentation.
Start with one business goal and the customer moment that supports it. A text should have a clear reason to arrive now; it should not be a duplicate of every email or an excuse to send more often.
Which SMS campaigns suit an online store?
| Campaign type | Useful customer moment | Practical example |
|---|---|---|
| Product launch | A new item or collection is available | Tell subscribers the product is live and link to its page. |
| Subscriber-only offer | You want to reward people who opted in | Share a specific offer and its terms with subscribers. |
| Limited-time promotion | A real promotion has a clear end time | State the offer and deadline without implying false urgency. |
| Product-drop or back-in-stock alert | Relevant inventory becomes available | Notify interested customers and link directly to the item. |
| Loyalty message | A customer reaches a meaningful loyalty milestone | Share a relevant reward or program update. |
These use cases align with Shopify’s examples of product announcements, special offers, subscriber exclusives, flash sales, loyalty programs, and product-drop alerts: Shopify’s SMS marketing guide. Send only when the offer or update is accurate and useful to the audience receiving it.

How to write a useful promotional text
Build each message around four elements: the store’s identity, why the message matters now, one action, and an opt-out instruction appropriate to the recipient’s location. Keep the offer and destination page consistent. Avoid stacking several promotions or calls to action into one text.
For example: “Northstar Goods: The new travel collection is live. See the bags: [store link]. Reply STOP to opt out.” Use your store’s own domain for links where possible. Shopify advises concise copy, clear sender identification, a single call to action, localized opt-out wording, attention to character limits, and respect for quiet hours. It also recommends testing a new campaign with a small audience before sending it more broadly: Shopify’s SMS campaign guidance.
Rank #2
Quiet hours depend on local rules and the recipient’s time zone; there is no single window established for every market. Check the current law and sending-platform rules for each audience before scheduling.
How to get SMS subscribers without weakening trust
SMS permission is separate from email permission. Shopify advises against treating an email list as an SMS list or importing purchased numbers. Collect consent through a clear checkout option or an opt-in keyword flow, and make the choice explicit: Shopify’s SMS marketing requirements.
Rank #3
- Explain what kind of texts subscribers will receive and how often they can expect them.
- Explain how phone numbers will be used and whether they may be shared, along with any applicable message or data charges.
- Keep a record of when and how each person opted in.
- Give subscribers a straightforward way to stop messages and provide support contact information.
- Do not make consent ambiguous or bundle it into language that does not clearly describe promotional texting.
Requirements vary by message content and recipient jurisdiction. Shopify points merchants to applicable privacy and telecommunications laws, which may include GDPR, CPRA, and TCPA, and notes additional requirements for EU and UK senders or recipients: Shopify’s regional SMS requirements. CTIA’s May 2023 Messaging Principles and Best Practices are industry guidance, not legal advice. CTIA says: “Obtain a Consumer’s express written consent to specifically receive marketing messages.” It also expects consumers to be able to revoke consent: CTIA Messaging Principles and Best Practices. Check current requirements in every market where you send.
How to use triggered texts without confusing them with marketing
Event-triggered messages can provide timely purchase information, such as an order confirmation or shipping update, when the event and the customer’s permission support the message. Shopify describes these as separate from its marketing campaigns: Shopify’s SMS marketing documentation.
Rank #4
Keep the message’s purpose honest. A coupon added to a text presented as purely informational can make it promotional under CTIA’s guidance. Treat the promotional content as marketing and apply the consent and opt-out rules that go with it: CTIA’s messaging guidance.

There is no universal best sending frequency established for every ecommerce list. Set expectations during signup, send when there is a meaningful reason, and adjust based on engagement and opt-outs. High opt-outs or weak engagement can harm sender reputation; carriers may filter or block messages, and Shopify notes that their reasons are not always disclosed: Shopify’s deliverability guidance.
- Segment by relevant customer or product interests instead of sending every message to everyone.
- Remove numbers that consistently fail delivery and honor opt-outs promptly.
- Avoid all-caps, excessive punctuation, and content patterns that can trigger filtering.
- Use your store’s domain for message links where possible.
- Check local quiet-hour requirements using the recipient’s local time.
An SMS may pass through a messaging platform, a wireless carrier, and the recipient’s device. Delivery can be affected by platform checks, carrier filtering, or device connectivity, so a sent message is not proof that every recipient received it.

Define the campaign’s goal before sending, then review available delivery, click, conversion, revenue-attribution, and opt-out data against that goal. Compare campaign types and audience segments over time; a product alert and a discount offer do not necessarily serve the same purpose. Shopify provides campaign analytics and recommends testing with a small audience before a larger send: Shopify campaign analytics and guidance.
Do not use a broad open-rate figure as a promise of ecommerce performance. Shopify’s September 2024 general SMS article repeats a reported “as high as 98%” open-rate claim attributed to Gartner, but the underlying Gartner publication, date, and methodology are not established here. It is not a reliable current ecommerce benchmark: Shopify’s general SMS article.

Choosing an SMS platform for an ecommerce store
Shopify merchants can use Shopify Messaging or third-party apps, but platform availability and features should be checked for the store’s markets and needs: Shopify’s SMS requirements and availability. There is no substantiated unbiased current vendor ranking here, so compare services against the work your program actually requires.
- Supported recipient countries and current sending restrictions
- Consent capture, consent records, and opt-out suppression
- Integration with the store and customer data
- Segmentation and event-triggered automation
- Campaign analytics and deliverability support
- Current costs and how pricing changes with list size or volume
- Ease of managing opt-outs and subscriber expectations
Country availability can change. Shopify’s requirements page says SMS marketing to Spanish phone numbers was paused beginning September 15, 2026, and to Austrian phone numbers beginning October 1, 2026. Confirm the live availability information before launching in either market: Shopify’s current SMS availability page.
Quick Recap
A practical launch checklist
- Choose one goal. Decide whether the first campaign is for a launch, a real promotion, a relevant inventory update, or another defined customer moment.
- Confirm market and platform support. Check current sending availability and local rules for the recipients’ locations.
- Set up explicit SMS consent. Explain message types and expected frequency, retain opt-in records, and provide clear opt-out and support instructions.
- Build a relevant segment. Send only to subscribers for whom the message makes sense.
- Write and review the text. Identify the store, give one clear action, use a consistent landing page, and include localized opt-out wording.
- Test a small send. Check links, offer terms, timing, and message rendering before a larger campaign.
- Review outcomes. Compare delivery, clicks, conversions, revenue attribution where available, and opt-outs with the original goal.
