Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted 7 Days to Die servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
In current Version 3.0 terminology, 7 Days to Die uses Sandbox presets instead of the older named difficulty scale. Choose the preset and the individual rules from the New Game or Load Game settings panels before entering the world; on a dedicated server, use the matching server properties. For a first seven-day run, start with the default-level preset (historically called Adventurer), change one pressure variable at a time, and keep a written copy of the settings or code so you can reproduce the world.
Sandbox presets, codes and the old difficulty names
The official Difficulty documentation says difficulty settings were converted to Sandbox presets in Version 3.0. That means a current build may not show the six familiar names at all. The names remain useful when reading older guides, comparing an existing save, or identifying the rough position of a preset on the difficulty scale.

|---|---|---|
| Scavenger | Easiest | Legacy vocabulary; look for the closest current Sandbox preset. |
| Adventurer | Easy/default range | The Game Mode documentation identifies Adventurer as the historical default. |
| Nomad | Middle range | Use only as a comparison label if your installed build still displays it. |
| Warrior | Above the middle range | Use the installed build’s preset name or code instead. |
| Survivalist | Hard | Legacy label; the current equivalent can have a different name or code. |
| Insane | Hardest | Legacy label; verify the current preset before using an old code. |
Difficulty primarily changes enemy strength. It does not, by itself, define every part of a seven-day challenge. Time, player and AI block damage, loot, death rules, Blood Moon settings, spawning, airdrops and cheat access are separate controls.
Check your build before copying a code
Sandbox labels and code formats can change between releases. The official wiki specifically flags older difficulty material as no longer current and notes the Version 3.0 conversion. Before you copy a code from a friend or an older post:

- Classic Antique Bronze Vibe & Perfect DND Gift Electroplated and deliberately worn for an ancient, battle-worn bronze tone that never goes out of style – an ideal D&D gift for players, dice goblins, and TTRPG collectors, perfect for rogue, warlock, or barbarian characters
- Check the game version shown by your launcher or title screen.
- Open the current New Game or Load Game settings and note the labels that actually appear.
- Use a code generated or displayed by that same build, rather than assuming a legacy six-name value will import.
- If the interface rejects a code, recreate the settings manually and record the resulting values.
There is no single code that is guaranteed to work across every build, platform or server template. Treat a code as a compact representation of settings for a particular version, not as a permanent universal difficulty ID.
Set a preset in a new world
Use the menu workflow below for a fresh seven-day challenge. Exact wording can vary slightly by platform and release, but the controls belong to the Game Settings panels documented for the game.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- From the main menu, choose New Game.
- Select the world, map or generation option you intend to use.
- Open the Game Settings panels and locate the current Sandbox preset or difficulty control.
- Choose the default-level option if the group is learning; in older terminology this is the Adventurer range.
- Review the separate controls for 24-hour cycle length, daylight length, player damage, AI block damage, loot abundance, loot respawn, death penalty, drop-on-death, Blood Moon count, enemy spawning, airdrops, cheat mode and map markers.
- If the build provides a sandbox-code field or displays a generated code, copy it exactly, including capitalization and separators. Save it with the world name and game version.
- Start the world and leave the core settings unchanged until you have observed at least one complete day-night cycle.
Keeping the map and core rules stable makes later tuning meaningful. If you change the world, difficulty, loot and XP at the same time, you will not know which change produced a different result.
Change settings before loading an existing world
Game Mode documentation states that difficulty and settings can be changed from the main menu before loading. This is the safest way to adjust a save without relying on an in-world command.
- Return to the main menu and choose Load Game.
- Select the save, then open its Game Settings panels instead of entering the world immediately.
- Change the preset or individual variable you intend to test.
- Apply or save the settings, then load the world.
- Write down the previous and new values. If the outcome is worse, restore the previous values using the same menu.
Whether a particular setting can be changed on an already-created save, and whether the change takes effect immediately, is version-sensitive. If a control is unavailable, use the dedicated-server configuration or the in-game console route described below, provided your build supports it.

A practical seven-day setup
Before Day 1: establish a known baseline
Choose the default-level Sandbox preset or its current equivalent. Keep the map, enemy spawning and normal survival rules at their baseline values. Decide in advance whether death should drop a backpack, a collection of items or another penalty; the setting is listed separately from difficulty. Enable map markers and airdrops only if that is the experience your group wants, and record the choice.
Do not enable Creative or Debug access for this survival world. Creative access can bypass the normal looting loop, and the Creative Menu documentation warns that enabling it while creating the world prevents achievements in that world.
Days 1–2: correct combat friction, one variable at a time
If the opening is too punishing, change one of these settings first:
- Player damage: raises or lowers the damage your character deals.
- Enemy damage: changes the direct combat threat.
- Loot abundance: changes how much usable supply you find.
Change only one, play long enough to observe the result, and then decide whether another adjustment is necessary. Do not raise XP and loot together: both can make the early game feel faster, but they affect different systems and obscure the cause of the change.
Days 3–4: tune the clock and supply loop
Use the time and loot controls to address a specific problem rather than to chase a promised progression speed.

- 24-hour cycle length: a longer cycle gives more real-time for building and exploration before the next in-game day.
- Daylight length: changes the proportion of the cycle spent in daylight.
- Airdrop frequency: changes how often that supply event appears.
- Loot-respawn interval: changes when containers can refresh.
These settings alter opportunities and pressure; they do not guarantee a particular level, loot tier or seven-day build speed.
Days 5–6: prepare specifically for the first Blood Moon
Inspect the Blood Moon count, enemy spawning, AI Blood Moon block damage and death/drop rules. Lowering the horde count or its block damage changes the event directly. A higher XP multiplier can move you toward a higher Game Stage sooner, which may increase the pressure you face on the event night. Make one deliberate change, then test the resulting defense rather than changing every Blood Moon control at once.
Day 7: record the challenge
Before the first Blood Moon begins, record the exact preset name, code (if the build supplies one), cycle and daylight values, damage multipliers, loot and respawn values, XP multiplier, death rule, Blood Moon count, enemy-spawn and airdrop choices, and whether cheats are disabled. For a shared challenge, distribute that record or keep a copy with the save. You can then restore the same conditions after a server reset or compare a later run without relying on memory.
What each setting actually controls
| Setting group | Direct effect | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Difficulty/Sandbox preset | Enemy strength and the broad combat pressure. | It does not independently determine Game Stage or loot quality. |
| Player and AI block damage | How quickly the player or AI damages blocks; Blood Moon AI block damage can be separate. | Changing block damage is not the same as changing enemy health or loot. |
| Loot abundance | Supply availability from loot sources. | It does not directly set the size or composition of hordes. |
| Loot respawn | When eligible containers can refresh. | A shorter interval is not a guaranteed progression multiplier. |
| 24-hour cycle and daylight | The length and light distribution of a game day. | Longer days do not automatically increase XP or loot per action. |
| XP multiplier | How quickly level-based progression is reached. | It does not make containers produce more loot by itself. |
| Blood Moon count and spawning | The timing/count and whether enemies spawn for the event. | It does not rewrite the underlying Loot Stage. |
| Death and drop rules | What is lost or retained after death. | They do not reduce enemy strength. |
| Airdrops and map markers | How supply events and navigation information are presented. | They do not change Game Stage. |
| Cheat mode | Access to tools that can bypass normal play. | It is not a harmless difficulty slider; it can affect achievements. |
Game Stage is not Loot Stage
The official Game Stage documentation defines Game Stage as a calculated value representing progression and survival skill. It is based on player level and adjusted days alive, and it controls the size and composition of sleeper, screamer/scout, special-purpose and Blood Moon hordes.

- Increasing XP can raise level-based progression and therefore move Game Stage faster, potentially increasing enemy pressure.
- Increasing loot abundance or changing respawn affects supply availability, not the Game Stage calculation.
- A named difficulty or Sandbox preset changes combat pressure, but it is not a shortcut for either stage value.
- More loot does not automatically make the next horde easier, and a higher horde pressure does not prove that loot quality has changed.
When evaluating a seven-day setup, compare XP, loot, damage and Blood Moon controls as separate axes. That is the only reliable way to identify which rule produced a change in your run.
Dedicated-server settings
The dedicated-server configuration reference documents numeric and Boolean properties that correspond to many of the menu controls. Common fields include GameDifficulty (0–5 in that reference), BlockDamagePlayer, BlockDamageAI, BlockDamageAIBM, XPMultiplier, DayNightLength, DayLightLength, DropOnDeath and BuildCreate.
- Stop the server cleanly and make a backup of its configuration file.
- Open the server’s active configuration template, not an unused example file.
- Set only the properties needed for your seven-day rules. Preserve the documented data type and range; for example, the cited reference uses 0–5 for
GameDifficulty. - Save the file, restart the server and join as an ordinary player to verify the result.
- Record the file version and values. A later game update may move a field into the newer preset/code system or rename its UI equivalent.
Server configuration and menu settings are version-sensitive. If a property is ignored, check the active build’s server reference and confirm that the server loaded the file you edited before changing more values.
Console commands for checking and administration
The Command Console documentation says console commands can retrieve game information and statistics, alter settings, spawn items and control time. Open the console using the key assigned by your platform, then use the built-in help system to confirm syntax for the installed build.
helplists available commands and their current syntax.getgamestat(also shown asggswhere supported) retrieves current game statistics.
Use the console to verify a state or perform deliberate administration, not to guess at a code format from an older release. Test commands in a copy of the world when possible, and keep Creative/Debug experiments separate from an achievement-focused save.

Choosing a sensible preset for different groups
| Group | Starting approach | First adjustment if needed |
|---|---|---|
| New players | Default-level Sandbox preset; baseline map, spawning and survival rules. | Lower enemy damage or raise player damage, but change only one. |
| Players learning construction | Default preset with a longer 24-hour cycle. | Adjust daylight length or airdrop frequency before touching XP. |
| Experienced co-op group | Default or a harder current preset with normal loot and death rules. | Tune Blood Moon count or AI Blood Moon block damage after testing the defense. |
| Challenge runners | Record a fixed preset/code and every individual setting before Day 1. | Change one named axis per run so results remain comparable. |
| Builders and troubleshooters | Use a separate test world for Creative/Debug access. | Never convert the achievement-focused seven-day save into the test world. |
Troubleshooting common problems
The old difficulty names are missing
This is expected in a Version 3.0-style build. Look for Sandbox presets, check the installed version and use the current labels rather than forcing a Scavenger-through-Insane code from an older guide.
A copied sandbox code is rejected
Confirm that the sender used the same game version, platform and settings interface. If the code still fails, recreate the values manually in Game Settings and save the resulting code or settings record from your own build.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The world feels harder after increasing loot
Loot abundance and Game Stage are separate systems. Check whether XP, days alive, player level or a Blood Moon setting changed; do not infer that the loot slider raised horde strength.
Changing XP made the first Blood Moon unexpectedly severe
XP changes how quickly level-based progression is reached. Because Game Stage uses progression and adjusted days alive, a higher multiplier can move you into a more demanding stage sooner.
The server ignores a setting
Stop the server, verify that you edited its active configuration, confirm the property’s spelling and range, restart it, and check the result in-game. Version changes can move settings between server configuration and newer preset/code systems.
Achievements no longer unlock
Check whether Creative access was enabled during world creation. The Creative Menu documentation warns that this prevents achievements for that world; use a separate test world for creative construction or debugging.
