Samsung Wallet can hold transit fares, supported digital IDs, and compatible vehicle keys—but availability depends on where you live and on the specific transit agency, state, vehicle, and Galaxy phone. In the United States, Samsung’s FAQ currently identifies Atlanta MARTA for transit cards; Samsung ID with CLEAR and participating states’ mobile driver’s licenses are separate US ID options. For a vehicle key, check compatibility for your exact car and phone before relying on it.

Check what works in your region before setting anything up

Samsung Wallet is available only on compatible Galaxy devices, and Wallet features can also depend on the device model, carrier, firmware, country, and participating partner. Support for one feature does not establish support for another: a country listed for Digital Key, for example, is not necessarily supported for transit cards or digital IDs.

Start with the feature you want, then verify the relevant partner’s participation. For transit, check the agency and fare system. For a mobile driver’s license, check your state motor-vehicle authority. For a digital vehicle key, check Samsung’s compatibility information and the automaker’s instructions for the exact vehicle and phone. Samsung’s US transit FAQ currently names Atlanta MARTA; that US FAQ is not a complete list of transit support worldwide.

  • Transit: Confirm the agency appears in Wallet and check whether it supports a separately purchased transit card, a payment card as the default transit card, or transfer of an existing physical card.
  • Digital ID: Confirm that you meet the credential requirements and that the location where you intend to present it accepts it.
  • Digital Key: Confirm the car, phone generation, software, and market are supported together. Do not assume that NFC or UWB support on its own guarantees compatibility.

Before counting on any of these features for a trip or commute, distinguish setup availability from acceptance at the place you plan to use it. A card option appearing in Wallet does not establish every fare rule, and a digital ID or vehicle key can still be limited to participating locations or exact compatible devices. Samsung’s feature pages are not a single worldwide compatibility matrix, so verify each partner independently.

How to add and use a transit card

Add a transit card in Samsung Wallet

  1. Open Samsung Wallet and go to the Quick Access tab.
  2. Tap +, then choose Transit Card.
  3. Select the transit agency shown for your system and agree to its terms.
  4. Follow the prompts to purchase the card. Samsung’s US FAQ says you need a default payment card to buy a transit card.

The agency options shown in Wallet are the practical check on whether this setup is available for your account and region. Samsung’s US FAQ identifies MARTA in Atlanta; it does not establish support for every US transit system or provide a global agency list.

Keep the purchase step separate from the ride step. You need an internet connection to purchase a card, but Samsung says network connectivity is not required to use a transit card after setup. If you are planning ahead, complete the purchase while you have a connection and confirm the setup is finished before you reach a reader.

Pay with a Wallet payment card instead

Some transit systems allow a payment card already in Wallet to serve as the default transit card, rather than requiring a separately purchased transit card. If the agency supports that option, open the payment card’s three-dot menu, choose Set up transit card, select the card, and confirm. This is useful when the local system accepts contactless payment cards, but it may not provide the same fare products or transfer options as an agency transit card. Check the transit operator’s fare rules before choosing between them.

Option What it does What to verify
Separately purchased transit card Adds an agency transit card through Wallet’s Transit Card flow. Whether the agency is listed, which fare products are offered, and whether the agency supports transferring an existing physical card.
Payment card set as default transit card Uses a Wallet payment card for transit where the system supports this arrangement. Whether the local system accepts that card for contactless fares and whether its fare rules meet your needs.

Neither option is automatically better. A separate transit card may be the more suitable choice if you depend on an agency fare product or a supported physical-card transfer. A payment card may be convenient if your transit system accepts it and its fare rules work for your trips. Confirm whether the agency supports the option you want rather than assuming contactless payment acceptance is universal.

Samsung’s FAQ also describes transferring a physical transit card when the agency supports that flow. Transfer availability is agency-specific, so check the instructions shown for your system rather than assuming every physical card can be moved into Wallet. If transferring matters to you, verify the agency’s instructions before you begin; it is a separate capability from simply adding a new transit card.

Tap to ride, even without a connection

After setup, tap the phone on the transit reader. Samsung says the phone does not need to be unlocked and network connectivity is not required to use the transit card. An internet connection is needed to purchase a card. Samsung’s US FAQ says Wallet supports only one transit card per system, so check which card is active if you expected to use more than one for the same system.

That one-card-per-system limit is different from the choice between a transit card and a payment card as the default. Check what Wallet has configured for the system you are riding, especially if you added or changed a card. If a tap fails, first confirm that setup and purchase completed and that you are using the expected card; Samsung’s offline-use statement applies after setup, not to purchasing a new card.

Set up a supported US digital ID

Samsung’s US Digital ID offering includes two different credentials: Samsung ID with CLEAR, which is backed by a valid US passport, and a mobile driver’s license issued through a participating state motor-vehicle authority. They have different eligibility rules and are not interchangeable.

Credential Eligibility basis Setup route Where use is described
Samsung ID with CLEAR A valid US passport. Samsung Wallet’s Quick Access tab, then + and Digital IDs. Participating TSA checkpoints with compatible readers; additional verification may be required.
Mobile driver’s license (mDL) A state must participate, and the state motor-vehicle authority’s requirements apply. Follow that state authority’s enrollment instructions. Samsung describes TSA presentation at participating checkpoints with compatible readers; acceptance depends on the location and process.

Choose based on the credential you have and the issuer’s eligibility rules, not on an assumption that one route is accepted everywhere. Samsung ID with CLEAR is passport-backed, while an mDL is issued under a participating state’s process. For either one, the intended presentation location must support the credential and have compatible readers. Samsung’s US information describes TSA use, not universal acceptance at every identity check.

Add Samsung ID with CLEAR

  1. Open Samsung Wallet and select Quick Access.
  2. Tap +, choose Digital IDs, and select Samsung ID with CLEAR.
  3. Continue through the prompts and complete the required verification using a valid US passport.

Samsung says users can apply for basic CLEAR ID or upgrade to CLEAR+. CLEAR+ has fees; the cited Samsung material does not establish a price here, so check the current offer during enrollment before choosing an upgrade. The key decision is whether the basic option suits you or you want the paid upgrade; do not assume a particular fee from a past offer.

Enroll a mobile driver’s license

First check whether your state motor-vehicle authority participates and follow its instructions for enrollment. The Wallet-side flow is not a substitute for the state’s eligibility and verification process. Samsung describes the mDL as an optional companion credential, not a replacement for the physical driver’s license. Carry and use your physical ID when required or when the location does not accept the digital version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Unlike the Samsung ID with CLEAR path, the mDL route depends on state participation and that authority’s enrollment rules. Samsung does not establish that all states participate. If your state is not listed by its motor-vehicle authority, do not assume you can enroll an mDL through Wallet; check the state’s current instructions.

Present an ID at a participating TSA checkpoint

Samsung describes two presentation methods: NFC or a QR code. Use the method requested by the compatible reader and follow any on-screen or staff instructions. A participating checkpoint may require additional verification, and a boarding pass may still be necessary; having a digital ID does not mean every checkpoint or every step of screening can be completed with the phone alone.

Samsung Electronics America announced on May 26, 2026 that Samsung ID with CLEAR had launched for US passport holders and said the service was available at more than 250 TSA checkpoints. That is Samsung’s published launch figure, not an independent measurement or a guarantee that a particular checkpoint currently accepts the credential. Check current TSA information and confirm with the checkpoint before travel.

A boarding pass may still be required even when the ID is accepted.

Set up and use a compatible digital vehicle key

Samsung Wallet Digital Key supports NFC and UWB. Samsung’s support material says key information is stored in the phone’s Secure Element. The interaction depends on the vehicle and the supported technology: NFC generally involves presenting the phone at the vehicle, while UWB can support hands-free proximity interaction. Do not infer hands-free operation just because a phone or car supports a digital key.

The practical comparison is about the interaction your exact vehicle supports. NFC generally means presenting the phone at the vehicle; UWB can allow proximity interaction without the same present-the-phone step. Neither description promises that every car supports both methods, or that every compatible phone can use the same feature. Verify the phone hardware and car-specific requirements before choosing an expected way to unlock or access the vehicle.

Verify the exact phone-and-car combination

  1. Check the automaker’s app or setup instructions for your exact vehicle and model year.
  2. Check Samsung’s current Digital Key compatibility information for the required Galaxy model, software, and vehicle brand.
  3. Confirm that the feature is available in your market and follow the automaker’s enrollment and pairing steps.
  4. Test the key’s supported interaction—such as presenting the phone for NFC or proximity use for UWB—before depending on it as your only way to access the vehicle.

Requirements vary by automaker and vehicle, including which phone generations and software versions are supported. The Samsung UK support information likewise notes that requirements vary by car brand; it should not be treated as a universal compatibility list.

Samsung Canada’s Digital Key page, updated September 11, 2026, lists availability in Canada, the United States, Republic of Korea, United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. This is a Digital Key availability list, not a statement that transit cards or IDs work in every listed country. Verify both market availability and the exact vehicle-phone pairing.

That country list answers only whether Digital Key is listed as available in those markets; it does not answer whether your automaker, vehicle, or Galaxy model is supported. Samsung’s regional support pages and automaker instructions cover different parts of the compatibility question. Check both rather than treating a country’s inclusion as a complete confirmation.

Choose the setup that fits your use

Samsung Wallet’s options are not universal substitutes for one another. Use the partner’s support and fare or credential rules to decide which route fits your situation.

If you are buying a Galaxy phone specifically to use one of these features, treat compatibility as a requirement to check before purchase. Samsung says Wallet needs a compatible Galaxy device, and availability can differ by region, model, carrier, and firmware. General Wallet support on a phone does not prove that a particular agency, state credential, or automaker feature works on that model in your market.

Fix common setup and use problems

The transit agency or card option is missing

Check the agency’s own support information and the options shown in Wallet for your region. Samsung’s US FAQ names MARTA, but does not claim that every agency is supported. If you expected to transfer a physical card, confirm that the agency supports transfer and follow its process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot purchase a transit card

Samsung’s US FAQ says a default payment card is required for purchase and that an internet connection is needed to buy a card. Check that both requirements are met, then retry the purchase flow. These purchase requirements are distinct from tapping an already-set-up card at a reader.

The phone does not work at a reader

Confirm that setup and purchase completed, that you are using the supported card for that transit system, and that you are tapping the phone at the reader as instructed by the operator. Samsung says the phone need not be unlocked and network connectivity is not needed for use after setup, so do not assume a mobile-data connection is required for an ordinary tap. For fare or reader errors, consult the transit operator.

A digital ID is not accepted

Check that you enrolled the correct credential, that the checkpoint or location participates, and that the reader supports the presentation method. Follow requests for additional verification and keep the physical ID available, particularly for an mDL, which Samsung says does not replace the physical license.

A vehicle key will not pair or operate as expected

Recheck the automaker’s instructions and Samsung’s current compatibility information for the exact vehicle, phone, software, and market. NFC and UWB support different interactions, and support can vary by car brand. If the setup is supported but pairing still fails, use the automaker’s troubleshooting path rather than assuming the issue is a Wallet-wide outage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add a transit card to Samsung Wallet?

Open Samsung Wallet’s Quick Access tab, tap +, choose Transit Card, select a listed agency, agree to its terms, and follow the purchase prompts. Samsung’s US FAQ says a default payment card and an internet connection are needed to purchase a card. The FAQ currently names Atlanta MARTA; check Wallet and your operator for local availability.

Can I use Samsung Wallet for transit without unlocking my phone or having internet?

Samsung says the phone does not need to be unlocked and network connectivity is not required to tap an already-set-up transit card. You do need an internet connection to purchase a card, and Samsung says only one transit card per system is supported.

Can I use a payment card instead of a separate transit card?

Some transit systems let you set a Wallet payment card as the default transit card. Open the payment card’s three-dot menu, choose Set up transit card, select the card, and confirm if the option is supported. Check the operator’s fare rules: a bank-card fare may not offer the same fare products or transfer options as an agency card.

What is the difference between Samsung ID with CLEAR and a mobile driver’s license?

Samsung ID with CLEAR is backed by a valid US passport and can be added through Wallet’s Digital IDs flow. A mobile driver’s license is issued through a participating state motor-vehicle authority and follows that state’s enrollment requirements. Acceptance depends on the location and compatible reader; Samsung says an mDL is optional and does not replace the physical license.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use Samsung Wallet digital ID at any airport checkpoint?

No. Samsung describes use at participating TSA checkpoints with compatible readers, using NFC or a QR code. Additional verification may be required, and a boarding pass may still be needed. Samsung reported more than 250 participating checkpoints at launch on May 26, 2026; confirm current TSA information and checkpoint acceptance before travel.

Will Samsung Wallet Digital Key work with my car and Galaxy phone?

It depends on the exact vehicle, automaker, Galaxy model, software, and market. Check Samsung’s current compatibility information and the automaker’s instructions. NFC generally requires presenting the phone at the vehicle; UWB can support hands-free proximity interaction, but only where the exact setup supports it.

The Bottom Line

Samsung Wallet’s transit cards, US digital IDs, and Digital Key are separate features with separate partner and device requirements. Check the transit agency, state authority, checkpoint, or automaker for your exact use case; then complete setup and test the feature before relying on it. Keep a physical ID available, and do not assume that support in one region or on one Galaxy model extends to every feature.
