Samsung recovery mode is a text-based maintenance menu for Galaxy phones. It can help when Android will not start normally, but the available actions have very different consequences. Start with a force restart or normal restart. If the problem continues, use recovery mode to select Wipe cache partition—not Wipe data/factory reset—when that option is appropriate. A cache wipe is intended to remove temporary system files without deleting your personal content; a factory reset removes personal data and should be reserved for a last resort after a backup.
The key combination is model-dependent. Samsung’s own guidance says that “The button combination required to open the recovery menu differs depending on your device.” Identify the exact Galaxy model and software version before following a button recipe, because phones with a physical Home button, a separate Bixby button and newer Side-button designs do not all enter recovery the same way.
What Samsung recovery mode does
Recovery mode is a small maintenance environment that starts independently of the normal Android interface. It is useful when the operating system is frozen, repeatedly restarting, unable to finish booting or showing errors before the home screen appears. The menu is controlled with hardware keys rather than touch: use the volume keys to move the highlight and the Power key to select.

It cannot diagnose every hardware fault, and a menu entry that sounds similar to another can have a completely different effect. In particular, Wipe cache partition and Wipe data/factory reset are separate commands. The first targets temporary cache data; the second is an erasure procedure.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
When recovery is worth trying
- Android remains stuck on the Samsung logo or keeps returning to it.
- A recent update appears to have left the phone unable to complete startup.
- The phone starts but behaves erratically after ordinary restart and lower-risk checks.
- You need to reach the reset controls because Android’s Settings app cannot be opened.
When recovery is unlikely to solve the problem
- The display, buttons or charging port are physically damaged.
- The phone has liquid or impact damage and fails consistently regardless of software steps.
- The device cannot remain powered long enough to display a recovery menu.
Samsung lists software glitches, low battery, incompatible applications and hardware issues among possible causes of boot loops. A recovery command cannot repair a failed component, so persistent symptoms or suspected damage warrant Samsung service inspection.
Choose the least destructive action first
| Action | Where it works | Data impact | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary restart | Android is responsive | No personal data deletion | The phone is slow, an app is misbehaving or the issue is temporary |
| Force restart | The phone is frozen or unresponsive | No personal data deletion | The screen does not respond to taps or normal shutdown |
| Samsung diagnostics and memory cleanup | Android can still be used and the supported Samsung Members features are installed | No personal data deletion from the diagnostic check itself | You want to investigate an app, memory or performance problem before using recovery |
| Wipe cache partition | Recovery mode | Designed to remove temporary cache files, not personal files | Startup or system behavior remains abnormal after restart |
| Wipe data/factory reset | Android Settings or recovery mode | Deletes personal data and returns the phone to a reset state | Only after backup and after less destructive troubleshooting has failed |
| Samsung service inspection | Service channel | Technician-dependent; ask about data handling before authorizing work | Physical damage is suspected or boot failure persists |
The table is a decision order, not a promise that every step will solve every fault. Move downward only when the preceding option is unavailable or unsuccessful.
Prepare before entering recovery
Identify the exact Galaxy model
Look in Settings > About phone if Android still opens, or check the original packaging, receipt or the model label in the SIM-tray area when applicable. Record the model name and software version. Samsung’s examples are organized by hardware design rather than by one universal list of current phones, so a key sequence that works on one Galaxy may do nothing on another.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Charge and protect the phone
- If the phone can charge, give it enough battery to remain on while you troubleshoot. A low battery is one of the causes Samsung identifies for boot-loop behavior.
- Remove accessories that could hold a button down, including a tight case, and disconnect nonessential peripherals.
- If you need to follow Samsung’s documented recovery factory-reset flow, have a USB data cable and a computer available. That instruction says to connect the phone to a computer by USB before entering recovery; it does not establish one connector type or a universal cable requirement for every Galaxy model.
Save information while Android still works
Copy photos, documents, authenticator details and other irreplaceable information before experimenting with any reset command. A cache wipe and a force restart are intended as non-erasing measures, but the reset option is not. If the phone is already trapped in a boot loop, use whatever backup method remains available before considering a factory reset.

Enter Samsung recovery mode
Exact timing and combinations vary by model and software. The following are the hardware layouts Samsung documents as examples; treat them as model families, not a complete current-phone matrix. If your Galaxy’s current support page gives different instructions, follow that page.
| Galaxy design | Typical example combination | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Physical Home button | With the phone off, hold Volume Up + Home + Power until the Samsung logo or recovery screen appears. | Applies to older designs with a real, clickable Home key; do not assume it works on a newer model without that key. |
| Separate Bixby button | With the phone off, hold Volume Up + Bixby + Power until recovery appears. | Only for models that actually have a dedicated Bixby key. |
| Side-button design | With the phone off, hold the model’s documented Volume Up and Side combination until recovery appears. | Samsung’s current instructions can require a USB connection to a computer in the recovery/reset procedure; check the exact model guidance rather than guessing. |
- Power the phone off completely. If Android is frozen, use the force-restart procedure in the next section or wait until the battery is depleted enough to shut down.
- Connect the USB cable to a computer when the model-specific Samsung instructions call for it, particularly for the documented recovery reset flow.
- Press and hold the correct key combination for your hardware layout. Keep holding through the Samsung logo; releasing too early can produce a normal boot instead of recovery.
- Release the keys when the recovery menu appears. A warning screen or an Android logo may appear briefly before the menu.
- Use Volume Up and Volume Down to highlight an entry. Press the Power key once to select it. Touch input generally is not used in this menu.
If the phone boots normally, the combination or timing was not accepted. Shut it down and retry with the exact sequence for the model. If it never responds, test a known-good charger and cable, remove the case, and consider service if physical damage is possible.
Use “Wipe cache partition” safely
Choose this option only when the recovery menu explicitly shows Wipe cache partition. It is separate from the factory-reset command and is the appropriate recovery action when you want to clear temporary system cache data without intentionally erasing personal files.
- Highlight Wipe cache partition with the volume keys.
- Press Power to select it.
- When the confirmation prompt appears, highlight the confirmation choice and press Power.
- Wait for recovery to report that the cache action has completed. Do not interrupt the phone while it is processing.
- Highlight Reboot device and press Power.
The first startup after maintenance can take longer than an ordinary restart. Give the phone time to reach Android before deciding that the procedure failed. If the same boot loop returns, continue with the diagnostic sequence rather than repeatedly wiping the cache.

What a cache wipe does not do
- It does not replace the operating system or install an update.
- It does not remove a problematic third-party application from Android.
- It is not a substitute for backing up data.
- It is not the same as Wipe data/factory reset; never select the latter by mistake.
Do not confuse recovery with a factory reset
Wipe data/factory reset is a destructive command. Samsung advises backing up important information first because the process erases personal data stored on the phone and returns it to a reset state. Use it only when the phone remains unusable after less destructive steps, or when you deliberately need to remove all local content before handing the device to someone else.
Before selecting the reset command
- Confirm that you have copied the data you need.
- Make sure you know the Google account previously used on the phone.
- Keep the Samsung account credentials available if the documented reset flow requests them.
- Keep the phone connected to reliable power and follow the model-specific USB instruction supplied by Samsung.
What happens after the reset
During setup, Google Factory Reset Protection can require verification with the Google account that was registered on the device before it was reset. Samsung’s reset guidance also notes that a Samsung account password may be required in its documented flow. This protection is designed to prevent an unauthorized person from simply resetting and reusing a lost phone. If you bought the device used, resolve account ownership with the previous owner before resetting it.
To perform the reset from recovery, highlight Wipe data/factory reset, press Power, carefully read the confirmation screen, and select the confirmation entry only when you accept the erasure. When it finishes, choose Reboot device. Menu wording can vary slightly by software version, so read every prompt instead of selecting by position alone.

After Android loads, close recently used applications, check whether storage is nearly full, install pending system updates from Settings when the phone is stable, and remove or update an application that was installed immediately before the problem. If the phone freezes again, use Samsung’s supported diagnostics when available rather than jumping directly to a reset.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical boot-loop troubleshooting sequence
A boot loop is repeated restarting or a device that never progresses beyond the Samsung logo. Samsung lists software glitches, low battery, incompatible apps and hardware faults as possible causes. Work through these branches in order so that a recoverable software problem does not lead to unnecessary data loss.
1. Establish whether the phone has enough power
Connect it to a reliable charger and allow it time to charge. Try a different compatible cable, power adapter or outlet if charging appears intermittent. Inspect the port for obvious debris without inserting metal objects. If the phone becomes unusually hot, swells or shows liquid damage, disconnect it and seek professional help instead of continuing to restart it.
2. Perform the force restart
Hold Volume Down + Side until the device restarts. If it reaches Android, observe whether the loop returns before opening multiple apps. A successful start gives you an opportunity to back up data and investigate recent changes.

Apply even pressure for a few seconds to allow the suction cup to adhere properly. To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.
3. Remove likely software triggers
Think about what changed immediately before the loop: a newly installed application, an update, a storage shortage or an unusual configuration. If Android stays open long enough, uninstall or update the recent application, close background apps and clear memory using the phone’s available maintenance controls. Do not assume a cache wipe removes an incompatible app; it does not.
4. Run supported Samsung diagnostics
When the phone can still be used, Samsung suggests lower-risk checks such as closing apps, clearing memory and restarting. Additional diagnostics depend on the Samsung Members app being installed and on the device supporting the feature. Open the app’s diagnostic area if it is available and follow the tests for battery, buttons, sensors or other reported symptoms. Feature names and availability can vary by model, region and software version.
5. Enter recovery and wipe the cache
Use the model-specific key combination, then select Wipe cache partition and finally Reboot device. This is the recovery step to try before a destructive reset.
6. Back up, then consider a factory reset
If the loop continues and you can still access or extract your important information, back it up before selecting Wipe data/factory reset. Treat the reset as a last resort and expect account verification during setup.
7. Escalate when the evidence points to hardware
Repeated failure after the preceding steps, a broken button, a damaged display, liquid exposure, unusual heat or a phone that cannot stay powered are reasons to contact Samsung support or an authorized service channel. Tell the technician what happened, which steps you tried and whether the device contains data that has not been backed up.
If recovery will not open
- It starts Android instead: power off fully, retry the exact combination and hold the keys through the logo.
- The menu appears but keys do nothing: remove the case, check for a stuck key and test the physical buttons outside recovery. A failed button may require service.
- The phone shows only a blank screen: charge it, try the force restart and check for physical damage. A blank screen is not proof that recovery is available.
- The phone reboots during recovery: use reliable power, disconnect unnecessary accessories and stop if the phone becomes hot or shows damage.
- You cannot find “Wipe cache partition”: do not substitute another entry. Recovery menus differ by model and software; consult the current Samsung instructions for that exact device.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a key combination from a different Galaxy generation.
- Releasing the buttons as soon as the Samsung logo appears.
- Assuming every model requires the same USB connector or computer connection. Samsung documents USB connection in its recovery factory-reset procedure, but the available instruction is not a universal connector rule for every Galaxy.
- Selecting Wipe data/factory reset when the intended action was Wipe cache partition.
- Resetting before checking whether a backup, Google account and Samsung account credentials are available.
- Repeating resets when physical damage, a failed battery or a defective button is more likely than a software cache problem.
When to stop troubleshooting yourself
Samsung recommends professional inspection when damage is suspected. Stop pressing buttons and arrange service if the phone has been dropped, exposed to liquid, has a damaged or swollen battery, becomes dangerously hot, smells unusual, or cannot maintain power. Persistent boot failure after a force restart, supported diagnostics and a cache wipe also justifies escalation. A service representative can advise whether data recovery is possible before any reset or component replacement.
Quick Recap
Key points to remember
- Recovery-mode buttons depend on the Galaxy’s hardware design and software version; there is no single sequence for every model.
- Use volume keys to navigate and Power to select once the recovery menu is open.
- Wipe cache partition is the non-destructive recovery choice for temporary cache data; Wipe data/factory reset erases personal data.
- Try a normal restart, force restart, supported diagnostics and cache wipe before considering a reset.
- Back up first and expect Google Factory Reset Protection, and possibly Samsung account verification, after a reset.
- Seek Samsung service when hardware damage is suspected or the phone still cannot boot.
