Samsung Galaxy phones can launch accessibility tools or start emergency actions without opening an app. Configure accessibility gestures at Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility shortcuts; configure Emergency SOS separately at Settings > Safety and emergency > Emergency SOS. Depending on your model, carrier and One UI version, you may use an on-screen Accessibility button, Side + Volume up, or both Volume buttons.
Set up and practice the shortcut before you need it. Emergency SOS has safeguards such as a swipe requirement, countdown and warning sound, while accessibility shortcuts can open one service directly or show a selection window when several services are assigned.
Which Galaxy shortcut should you use?
These features are related but do different jobs. Accessibility shortcuts open a service such as TalkBack, high-contrast fonts or Universal switch. Emergency SOS starts the emergency behavior configured on your phone. Emergency sharing sends information to selected contacts and is not the same as an SOS call.

Samsung documents these options in its advanced accessibility settings guide and its emergency situations guide. The exact labels and available gestures can differ between devices.

Check your phone before changing a shortcut
Galaxy menus are not identical across generations. Samsung notes that phone model, One UI or Android version, and carrier software can alter the accessibility screens. If you do not see a menu named exactly as shown here, open Settings and search for Accessibility shortcuts, Emergency SOS or Side button. Some older documentation places related controls under Advanced settings or calls them Direct access.
- Install any pending system update before configuring the shortcut, then note the labels your phone actually displays.
- Decide whether the gesture must be usable with the screen locked. Emergency behavior and accessibility behavior can have different lock-screen rules.
- Tell a trusted person which gesture you configured. A helper should know whether your phone requires a swipe or countdown before an emergency action is sent.
- Do not test an SOS call in a way that contacts emergency services. Use the settings screens and a controlled check of the visible confirmation instead.
Configure an accessibility shortcut
Start at Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility shortcuts. Select the service first, then choose the trigger your device supports. Samsung’s current support material uses this route, although a particular model may show a slightly different heading.
Use the on-screen Accessibility button
- Open Settings, choose Accessibility, and tap Accessibility shortcuts.
- Choose Accessibility button and turn on the button shortcut.
- Select one or more actions offered by your phone. Examples Samsung gives include TalkBack, High contrast fonts and Universal switch; your list may be shorter or include additional services.
- Return to the home screen. A small Accessibility button appears in the navigation area. Tap it whenever you need the selected service.
This option is easiest to discover because it does not require remembering a physical-button combination. Its trade-off is that the button must remain available in the navigation interface, and a user who cannot see or touch the screen may not be able to reach it.

Use Side + Volume up
- In Accessibility shortcuts, select Side and Volume up buttons (the wording may be abbreviated).
- Choose the accessibility services that should respond to the combination.
- Press the Side and Volume up buttons together whenever you need the shortcut.
When you assign two or more services, Samsung says the phone opens a Direct access selection window after the button press. Choose the service in that window instead of assuming that the first item will always launch. If only one service is assigned, the gesture can open that service directly.
Use Volume up + Volume down
- In Accessibility shortcuts, choose Volume up and down buttons.
- Select the single accessibility service to associate with the gesture.
- Press and hold Volume up and Volume down together for at least three seconds.
This combination is useful when you want a service that can be activated without locating an on-screen control. It is generally configured for one service at a time; if your phone does not offer the option, that gesture is not supported on that model or software build.
Choose services deliberately
Assign only services you can identify under stress. A screen reader changes the way taps and swipes are interpreted, while an input aid such as Universal switch can alter navigation. If you need more than one service, Side + Volume up is the option Samsung specifically describes as providing a Direct access chooser. Keep a note of the selection order and practice opening and closing each service.

Set up Emergency SOS
Emergency SOS is configured separately from accessibility. Open Settings > Safety and emergency > Emergency SOS. Samsung’s US instructions use five Side-button presses to begin the SOS sequence.

- Tap Emergency SOS and review every option before enabling the feature.
- Set whether Require swipe to call is enabled. When it is enabled, five Side-button presses bring up the SOS Call control, and you must swipe the on-screen icon to continue.
- Choose a countdown if your phone offers one. A countdown gives you time to cancel an accidental sequence before emergency actions start.
- Choose whether to play a warning sound. A sound can alert people nearby, but it may be undesirable when silence is important.
- Read the confirmation text describing what your device will call or message. The final action depends on the settings and regional implementation on that phone.
“Press five times to begin” is not the same as “the phone immediately calls emergency services.” A required swipe or countdown can intervene, and the configured call or alert behavior varies by device and region. Learn the exact confirmation screen on your own phone rather than relying on a generic description.
Prevent accidental activation
- Keep Require swipe to call enabled if you often carry the phone in a tight pocket or bag.
- Use a countdown long enough to recognize an accidental sequence, while remembering that extra delay can matter in a real emergency.
- Explain the five-press gesture to family members who may handle your phone.
- Check the setting after a major software update; Samsung can change menu labels or available controls between versions.
Configure Emergency sharing separately
Emergency sharing is for notifying selected contacts. Find it at Settings > Safety and emergency > Emergency sharing. It does not replace the physical-button SOS configuration.

- Open Settings > Safety and emergency > Emergency sharing.
- Add the people who should receive an emergency message and verify their numbers or messaging details.
- Review the information the message can include. Samsung describes location and low-battery information as available details.
- If offered on your model, choose whether to attach pictures or an audio recording.
- Save the configuration and tell your contacts what an incoming emergency-sharing message means.
Because location and battery status can be sensitive, select contacts you trust and revisit the list when relationships or phone numbers change. Emergency sharing can help contacts understand where you are and whether your phone may soon stop transmitting, but it is still a messaging feature and may depend on network availability.
Understand the Side button’s other actions
The Side button has controls that are separate from Accessibility shortcuts and Emergency SOS. Samsung’s Side-button support page says supported newer models may let a double press open Camera, Flashlight, Magnifier, Voice Recorder, Samsung Notes, Samsung Capture, Modes and Routines, or an app. A long press may open a digital assistant, Bixby, or the power-off menu. The available list is model dependent.

Changing the double-press or long-press action does not automatically change the five-press Emergency SOS sequence, but it can affect what you see after an accidental press. If you cannot find the Side button page, search Settings for “Side button.”

Troubleshoot a shortcut that does not work
The Accessibility shortcuts page is missing
Search Settings for Accessibility shortcuts, then try Direct access or Advanced settings. Samsung explains that accessibility categories and labels vary by phone, software version and carrier. The accessibility-settings guide documents this variation. If no matching result appears, your model may not support that trigger.
The button combination does nothing
- Return to Accessibility shortcuts and confirm that the gesture is enabled and that at least one service is selected.
- Press the buttons at the same time. For Volume up + Volume down, hold them for the full three seconds rather than tapping.
- Remove extra services temporarily. If a Direct access chooser appears with several entries, select the intended service.
- Check whether a thick case prevents both buttons from being pressed fully.
- Restart the phone and check again after any system update.
TalkBack or Voice Assistant is difficult to turn off
Samsung’s TalkBack and Voice Assistant guide says that holding Volume up and Volume down together for at least three seconds can disable the screen reader when its shortcut is enabled. A first-use confirmation may appear. If the shortcut was never enabled or does not respond, use the screen reader’s navigation gestures to open Settings > Accessibility and disable the active screen-reader service there.
Emergency SOS starts when you did not intend it
Open Settings > Safety and emergency > Emergency SOS and review Require swipe to call, the countdown and warning sound. Enabling the swipe requirement adds a deliberate confirmation after the five presses. A countdown can provide cancellation time, although it also delays an intentional action.

Emergency contacts did not receive a message
Check the Emergency sharing contact list, messaging permissions and network connection. Confirm that the recipient’s number or account is current. Location and low-battery details are features Samsung describes, but delivery still depends on the phone being able to send messages.
The Side button menu looks different
Do not assume that a guide for another Galaxy model applies to yours. Samsung’s customization instructions list different double-press and long-press actions for supported devices. Search Settings for “Side button” and use the options shown on your phone.
