Samsung’s feature is called Notification highlights. Turn on its separate Summarize notifications control to receive short recaps of eligible conversational alerts. It does not summarize every notification or reproduce a complete chat. For any date, amount, address, name, deadline, promise, or urgent instruction, open the original conversation and verify the details yourself.
The exact menu and eligibility rules depend on your Galaxy model, One UI version, region, language, and app. Samsung publishes two menu paths and describes slightly different source windows in different regional guides, so use the labels visible on your phone as the final authority.
What Galaxy AI notification summaries actually do
Notification summaries are part of Samsung’s Notification highlights feature. Notification highlights contains two independent controls:

Turning on one does not automatically turn on the other. A summary is an orientation aid, not a transcript, a complete digest of every alert, or a guarantee that every sentence in a conversation is represented.

Samsung’s United States support description says the summarizer uses notification history from the previous 24 hours. A Canadian guide for the Galaxy S26 describes summaries based on unread notifications. Those descriptions are not identical, so the practical rule is to regard the feature as processing recent eligible conversational notifications that your phone still considers available. It may omit older, already viewed, unsupported, or otherwise ineligible alerts.
Turn on Summarize notifications
Samsung documents two settings routes. Your phone may show either one because menu placement changes with software, model, and region.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Notifications > Notification highlights. If that route is not present, check Galaxy AI > Notification highlights.
- Turn on Summarize notifications.
- Leave Prioritize notifications off unless you also want alerts sorted by importance.
- Open the app controls on the same screen and enable or disable summarization for individual apps.
Use the Settings search field for Notification highlights if neither route is obvious. Samsung notes that labels and layouts vary by device, software, and app version. If search returns nothing, install available system updates, restart the phone, and confirm that your model and region support the feature.
Choose apps individually
Notification highlights is not a universal switch for every application. The app-level list determines which installed apps may be summarized. To inspect it, open the Notification highlights screen and review each listed app. You can also check Settings > Notifications > App notifications when troubleshooting an app that never produces a summary.
Enable only apps whose conversational alerts you actually want condensed. Leaving a sensitive or high-consequence conversation unsummarized can be a sensible privacy and accuracy choice, because the summary is less detailed than the original message and Samsung warns that summaries may not always be accurate.
Which notifications, apps, and languages are eligible?
The feature targets conversational notifications, especially message threads and social conversations. It is not intended to summarize every alarm, delivery update, marketing alert, system notice, or one-line status message.

This list can change and may differ by market. An app appearing on one regional support page does not guarantee that the same app is enabled on your phone. Always check the live app-level controls on your device.

Samsung lists support for English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Polish, Vietnamese, and Hindi. Summaries generally follow the phone’s system language. A supported app can still fail to summarize if the required language, notification format, or software build is unavailable.
Check model, software, and regional availability
Compatibility is a combination of hardware, One UI software, region, app, and language. Do not treat a model list from another country as a universal rollout promise.
For example, Samsung Japan’s support page, updated September 14, 2026, lists Galaxy S25 and S25 Ultra, Galaxy S26 models, Z Flip7 and Z Flip8, and Z Fold7 and Z Fold8 models. That is a regional list, not proof that every carrier or country exposes the same controls.
Samsung’s United States troubleshooting guidance describes Notification highlights on phones running One UI 8.5 or later, including the S26 series and newer models. The US software statement and the Japanese device list are not identical. If the feature is missing:
- Check Settings > Software update for the latest release offered to your phone.
- Search Settings for
Notification highlightsafter updating. - Check your local Samsung support page rather than relying on a list from another region.
- Verify that the specific app and language are enabled in the feature’s app controls.
- Remember that carrier firmware and staged rollouts can delay a feature even when the model family is listed.
Why a summary may not appear
Samsung US lists several conditions that can prevent activation. They are published troubleshooting requirements, not independently tested guarantees that every qualifying alert will be summarized.

A reliable troubleshooting sequence
- Confirm that Summarize notifications is on and that the specific app is enabled.
- Send or receive a sufficiently long conversational message in a supported app.
- Leave a one-to-one conversation available for at least three minutes, or a group conversation for at least nine minutes.
- Lock the phone so the screen is off.
- Make sure the battery is at least 30% and Power saving mode is disabled.
- Wait for the notification to be processed, then inspect Notification highlights.
- If nothing appears, open Settings and search for Notification history to confirm that the notification arrived. The history can help establish whether an alert was received and which recent alerts were available; it does not guarantee recovery of every detail omitted from a summary.
- Repeat the test with another supported app. If one app works and another does not, the difference is probably app support or notification formatting rather than the global switch.
How to review what a summary leaves out
Use a summary to decide whether a conversation needs your attention, then switch to the source conversation for anything consequential. A short recap can omit qualifiers, chronology, replies, attachments, emojis, links, or the identity of the person who made a statement.
Verify high-consequence details
Open the original chat or app before acting on any of these:

- Promises, approvals, cancellations, policy exceptions, or commitments
- Medical, safety, security, employment, legal, or travel instructions
- Links, files, images, voice messages, reactions, and messages that depend on earlier context
Read enough surrounding messages to understand who said what and whether a later reply changed the plan. Do not infer that an item absent from the recap was absent from the conversation.

Use notification history as a diagnostic, not a transcript
Samsung points to Notification history when troubleshooting the time window and checking whether notifications arrived. It can show that an alert was delivered and may let you inspect notification content retained by the operating system. Samsung does not promise that every source message, omitted sentence, attachment, or older alert can be reconstructed there. For a complete record, open the original messaging or social app.
Can you trust Galaxy AI summaries?
Samsung’s own troubleshooting guidance says: “Summaries may not always be accurate.” That warning matters even when the recap sounds fluent. Treat the output as a convenience layer that helps you triage notifications, not as the authoritative version of a conversation.
A practical trust rule is:
- Low consequence: use the recap to decide whether to read a casual conversation now or later.
- Moderate consequence: open the source chat before replying if the summary changes your understanding of the request.
- High consequence: read the original messages and any linked files before taking action, recording a fact, or forwarding the information.
Never use a summary alone to establish a quote, consent, deadline, transaction amount, or instruction. The feature is designed to save attention, not to create an evidentiary record.
Notification summaries versus notification prioritization
These controls solve different problems. Summarization reduces the amount of text you read. Prioritization changes how alerts are arranged.

Samsung says duplicate status-bar icons can occur because prioritized alerts are displayed separately. After a prioritized alert has been viewed twice, Samsung says it returns to regular status. Those behaviors concern sorting, not missing text in a summary.
Privacy and cost considerations
Samsung states that data used to analyze notification importance for prioritization is processed on-device. That statement is specific to prioritization; it should not be extended automatically to summarization on every model or software version. Check the privacy information that applies to your device and region if message content is sensitive.
Samsung describes basic Galaxy AI features as free. Enhanced AI features and third-party AI services may have different terms or fees, and those terms can change. Notification highlights is software on a compatible Galaxy device; it does not require a special case, charger, paid app, or consumable.
When upgrading is the only practical option
If your phone has no Notification highlights entry after software updates, and your local Samsung documentation does not list the model, the feature may simply be unavailable on that device or in your region. Do not assume that installing a messaging app or changing a notification toggle can add hardware- or firmware-gated Galaxy AI functions.

A newer Galaxy model such as an S26-series phone may be an option for someone whose existing device is unsupported, but verify the exact model, country, carrier version, and One UI release before buying. Compatibility lists are regional and can change.
What to check before relying on a recap
Make a quick compatibility check whenever you set up a new phone or messaging app. First, confirm that the Notification highlights menu exists and that Summarize notifications is enabled. Next, open the app-level list and confirm that the app is actually offered there. Then check the phone’s system language against Samsung’s supported-language list. Finally, test with a normal conversational notification while the screen is off, the battery is above 30%, and Power saving mode is disabled. This separates a configuration problem from a message that simply does not meet Samsung’s stated conditions.
Do not use one successful test as proof that every conversation will work. Eligibility is evaluated per app and notification, and Samsung’s published lists and software requirements can change. Recheck the controls after a major One UI update or when moving the phone to a different region or carrier.

If a recap never appears, do not repeatedly resend sensitive information merely to force a test. Check Notification history first, then use a supported, low-consequence conversation for troubleshooting. If the recap appears but seems to contradict the visible message, stop relying on it, open the source app, and read the surrounding thread. Record the original wording rather than copying the AI sentence into notes or forwarding it as though it were a quotation.
When a conversation contains several replies, check the latest message and any later correction. A summary can compress a sequence into one impression, while the final reply may change a date, amount, location, or decision. The original thread is the only dependable place to resolve that conflict.
A compact daily workflow
- Enable Notification highlights and turn on Summarize notifications only for supported apps you want covered.
- Leave Prioritize notifications off unless you also want separate alert sorting.
- Let the phone meet Samsung’s stated screen, battery, power-mode, duration, and message-length conditions.
- Use the recap to triage your notification queue.
- Open the original conversation whenever a detail affects money, time, identity, safety, privacy, or a commitment.
- If a recap seems wrong or incomplete, trust the source conversation rather than trying to reconstruct it from the summary.
That workflow captures the feature’s benefit—faster awareness—without treating an AI-generated notification recap as a complete or authoritative message.

Does Summarize notifications summarize every alert?

How long must a message notification be present?
