The Galaxy Tab S10 FE can run Samsung DeX directly on its own display, giving you a desktop-style workspace without a monitor. Open Quick Settings, tap Samsung DeX, then arrange app windows with touch, S Pen, a keyboard, and a mouse. This guide explains the setup, multitasking controls, workspace limits, accessories, software requirements, and the important display limitation: Samsung does not support HDMI output or Wireless DeX to a TV or monitor on this model.
What Samsung DeX does on the Galaxy Tab S10 FE
Samsung DeX changes the tablet interface into a desktop-like environment. Apps open in resizable windows instead of occupying the whole screen, a taskbar gives you access to running apps, and you can work with several windows at once. The Tab S10 FE supports this standalone mode on its built-in screen, so you do not need a dock, monitor, television, or video cable to use DeX.
Samsung describes standalone DeX as a way to use the tablet screen as the workspace itself. That makes the feature useful for writing beside a browser, comparing documents, answering messages while viewing a calendar, or keeping a reference app visible during a video call. DeX does not turn Android apps into Windows or macOS programs; it provides a desktop-style arrangement for compatible Android apps.
The controls you see depend on the software installed on your tablet. Samsung says tablets running One UI 7.1 or earlier use Classic DeX, while tablets on One UI 8 or later use New DeX. The multi-desktop and pop-up-window instructions in this guide apply to Android 16 with One UI 8.0 or later. If a button or gesture is missing, check Settings > About tablet > Software information and use the controls for your installed version.

How do I turn on Samsung DeX on my Tab S10 FE?
- Hold the tablet in the orientation you want to use and wake the screen.
- Swipe down from the top-right edge with two fingers to open the full Quick Settings panel. A one-finger swipe may show only notifications or a smaller set of controls.
- Find and tap Samsung DeX. If this is the first launch, follow the on-screen prompts.
- Wait for the tablet to switch to the DeX desktop. Your open apps may be rearranged into windows, and DeX controls will appear around the desktop.
- Start an app from the Home screen or app list. Use touch or the S Pen if you have no external pointing device.
The first launch can take a moment while the interface changes. DeX runs on the tablet display itself, so there is no pairing step for a screen and no external-display setting to enable. If the DeX tile is not visible, expand Quick Settings fully and use the panel’s edit control to add it, then try the two-finger swipe again.
Can I use DeX without a monitor?
Yes. Standalone DeX on the Tab S10 FE is specifically designed to work without a monitor or TV. The tablet’s own screen is the DeX workspace, and touch or S Pen input is sufficient for basic use. A keyboard and mouse are optional rather than prerequisites.
| Setup | What you can do | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Tablet screen only | Open and resize windows, switch apps, and use DeX with touch or S Pen | No monitor, cable, or adapter is required |
| Tablet plus keyboard | Type in documents, messages, search fields, and shortcuts more quickly | USB and Bluetooth keyboards are supported; a keyboard cover is optional |
| Tablet plus keyboard and mouse | Use pointer-based selection and keyboard shortcuts in a more laptop-like arrangement | Pair Bluetooth devices or connect supported USB accessories |
| External TV or monitor | Not available through the Tab S10 FE’s supported DeX paths | Samsung’s compatibility guidance excludes HDMI output and Wireless DeX for this model |
Do not buy an HDMI adapter, USB-C-to-HDMI cable, or wireless display solely to add DeX to an external screen on the Tab S10 FE. Samsung’s US compatibility guidance says this model is not compatible with HDMI output or Wireless DeX to a TV or monitor. DeX on the built-in tablet display is the supported use case described here.
How do I control DeX with touch and S Pen?
Touch works as the basic pointer in standalone DeX. Tap an app to open it, tap a window’s title bar to bring it forward, and drag a window by its top bar to move it. Use the window controls in the title bar to minimize, maximize, or close an app when those controls are available. The S Pen performs the same pointing and selection tasks with more precise control for small buttons, text selection, and handwriting-capable apps.
- Open an app: Tap its icon from the DeX Home screen or app list.
- Move a window: Press and drag the top header or title area to another part of the desktop.
- Resize a window: Drag an available edge or corner. Some apps impose their own minimum size.
- Switch apps: Tap another visible window, use the taskbar, or open Recents.
- Close an app: Use the close control in its title bar or close it from Recents.
Android apps do not all expose identical window controls. If an app stays full-screen, has no resize handle, or refuses to open in a small window, that behavior comes from the app or its DeX compatibility rather than a missing mouse setting.

How do I use multiple windows in DeX?
New DeX on Android 16 with One UI 8.0 or higher adds the pop-up workflow Samsung documents for the Tab S10 FE. You can launch an app and convert it to a floating window from its top header bar, then arrange several windows on the desktop.
Put an app into a pop-up window
- From the DeX Home screen, launch the app you want to keep visible.
- Place your finger or S Pen on the app’s top header bar.
- Swipe down on that header bar. Samsung’s Android 16 and One UI 8 guidance uses this gesture to put the app into pop-up view.
- Drag the resulting window to the side or corner of the screen.
- Open another app and repeat the process. Move and resize each window until the layout suits the task.
A practical three-window arrangement
For research and writing, keep a browser on the left, a document editor in the largest central area, and notes or a calculator in a narrow window on the right. For communications, place email beside a calendar and keep a messaging app in a small pop-up. The exact arrangement depends on each app’s minimum window size; DeX does not guarantee that every app can occupy every size.
Use Recents to switch or reorganize
Open Recents from the DeX taskbar or navigation controls to see running apps. Select an app to bring it forward, close apps you no longer need, or move to another desktop if you have created one. Keeping fewer unused apps open can make the workspace easier to navigate, even though Samsung’s stated app limit is higher.
How many DeX workspaces and apps can the Tab S10 FE handle?
On the newer multi-desktop workflow, Samsung says you can create up to four workspaces. Its DeX feature guidance also states a maximum of five apps open simultaneously in each workspace. These are Samsung’s feature limits, not independent performance measurements; actual responsiveness depends on the apps, files, and background activity you run.
Create another workspace
- Open Recents from the DeX taskbar or navigation controls.
- Find the add-desktop icon in the Recents view.
- Select the icon to create a new workspace.
- Open the apps needed for that context, such as writing tools in one workspace and communication tools in another.
- Return to Recents whenever you need to switch desktops.
Use separate workspaces for genuinely different activities rather than duplicating the same app in every desktop. For example, one desktop can hold a browser, document editor, and file manager for a project; another can hold email, calendar, and chat. Remember that the four-workspace and five-app figures require the newer software path Samsung associates with Android 16 and One UI 8 or higher.

How do I connect a keyboard or mouse?
You can use DeX with no accessories, but a physical keyboard and pointer make long typing sessions more comfortable. Samsung lists USB and Bluetooth keyboards and mice as supported input options. A compatible keyboard cover is another option for a single-piece laptop-style setup.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Pair a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse
- Put the keyboard or mouse into pairing mode according to its own instructions.
- On the tablet, open Settings > Connections > Bluetooth.
- Turn Bluetooth on if it is off and wait for the accessory to appear under available devices.
- Tap the accessory’s name.
- Tap Pair when the confirmation prompt appears. If a keyboard displays a code, type that code on the keyboard and press Enter.
- Return to DeX and test typing, pointer movement, and any special keys the accessory provides.
Use a USB accessory
Connect a supported USB keyboard or mouse to the tablet’s USB-C port using the connector required by that accessory. If it does not respond, disconnect it, unlock the tablet, reconnect it, and check whether Android shows a USB-device notification. A powered hub may be necessary for accessories that draw more power, but the Tab S10 FE’s DeX display limitation is unchanged: a hub or cable cannot add supported HDMI or Wireless DeX output.
Choose a keyboard cover or separate devices
| Choice | Best for | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|
| Touch and S Pen only | Short sessions, reading, annotation, and occasional text entry | Slower for long documents and extensive keyboard shortcuts |
| Bluetooth keyboard | Portable typing while leaving the tablet’s USB-C port free | Needs charging or batteries; layout and language vary by model and region |
| USB keyboard | Users who prefer a wired connection with no Bluetooth pairing | Uses the port and may require an adapter or hub depending on the plug |
| Keyboard cover | A single integrated tablet-and-keyboard package | Samsung identifies the Book Cover Keyboard as available for the Tab S10 FE and sold separately in its UK product information; availability, layout, and features vary by country, language, and model |
| Keyboard plus mouse | Extended writing, spreadsheets, and pointer-heavy workflows | More items to carry, pair, charge, and position |
No particular third-party keyboard or mouse is uniquely guaranteed by the general DeX documentation. Check the connector, operating range, keyboard layout, language, and local availability before purchasing, and verify current pricing in your country because prices and bundles change.
Can I connect the Tab S10 FE to an external monitor with DeX?
No. Samsung’s US compatibility information excludes the Galaxy Tab S10 FE from HDMI output and Wireless DeX to a TV or monitor. That means the supported DeX setup is the tablet’s own screen, not a second display. The limitation applies even if an adapter appears physically compatible with the USB-C port.
- Do not treat a USB-C-to-HDMI cable as a supported DeX solution for this model.
- Do not plan on Wireless DeX to a television or monitor.
- Do not interpret ordinary screen-sharing or casting features as external-monitor DeX; they are different functions and do not provide the supported DeX desktop described here.
If your requirement is a two-screen DeX workstation, the Tab S10 FE is not the appropriate model based on Samsung’s compatibility guidance. For laptop-style multitasking on this tablet, use the built-in display with windows, workspaces, and optional input accessories.

What software version do I need for the newer multitasking controls?
Samsung associates the documented pop-up-window gesture and multi-desktop workflow with Android 16 and One UI 8.0 or higher. Samsung’s broader support information distinguishes this from older software: tablets on One UI 7.1 and earlier use Classic DeX, while tablets on One UI 8 and later use New DeX.
To check the installed versions, open Settings > About tablet > Software information. If your tablet has not received the relevant update, you may still have DeX with a different layout and controls, but the swipe-down header-bar gesture, add-desktop icon, or other New DeX elements may not appear. Do not keep repeating a gesture that your software version does not support; use the window and Recents controls shown on your screen instead.
Menu names can change with later updates. When Samsung’s instructions and your interface differ, identify the installed One UI version first, then consult the current support instructions for that version rather than assuming a hardware fault.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why will an app not open or resize in DeX?
Samsung warns that some apps may not run in DeX, while others may require a separate license. Android applications are built with different windowing capabilities, so a mobile-first app may remain full-screen, disable resizing, show a simplified layout, or refuse to launch in DeX.
- App will not launch: Update the app and Android if updates are available, then try again. If it still fails, the app may not support DeX.
- No resize handles: Bring the app forward and check its title-bar controls. If none are available, the app may enforce a fixed layout.
- Features are missing: Check whether the service requires a separate license or a desktop-specific subscription tier.
- Window appears blank or unstable: Close it from Recents, reopen it, and test with fewer active apps. Report persistent problems to the app developer because compatibility is app-specific.
- Keyboard input is wrong: Recheck the selected physical-keyboard layout and language in the tablet’s keyboard settings; the printed keys and the software layout must match.
Do not assume that a successful phone installation means an app will provide a full desktop interface. DeX supplies the windowed environment, but the app developer determines how that app behaves inside it.

- Swipe down from the top-right edge with two fingers to open Quick Settings.
- Tap the Samsung DeX tile.
- Confirm any prompt if one appears. The tablet returns to its regular Android tablet interface.
Exiting DeX does not require disconnecting a keyboard or mouse. You can leave paired Bluetooth accessories connected for later use or turn them off separately to save battery.
A reliable DeX workflow for everyday laptop-style work
Start with one primary app
Open the app that contains the main task, such as a document editor, browser, or spreadsheet. Give it the largest area and keep its title bar accessible so you can move or resize it later.
Add only the supporting windows you need
Open a reference browser, file manager, calculator, calendar, or messaging app as a pop-up. Place narrow utilities at the edge and reserve the central area for the primary document. This keeps the desktop readable instead of filling it with overlapping windows.
Separate contexts with workspaces
When the Android 16 and One UI 8 or later multi-desktop controls are available, use one workspace for focused production and another for communications or planning. Switch through Recents rather than leaving every app stacked on one desktop.
Use the right input for the task
Touch and S Pen are efficient for selecting, scrolling, drawing, and annotating. Add a keyboard for sustained typing and a mouse when precise pointer selection is more comfortable than touch. Pair accessories before starting a long session so you are not interrupted by setup prompts.
Keep the display limitation in your plan
Design your layout around the Tab S10 FE screen. DeX on this model is a single-screen tablet workspace; HDMI and Wireless DeX to an external display are not supported according to Samsung’s compatibility guidance.
