You can use Samsung DeX to play a compatible Galaxy game on a monitor or TV, but DeX does not turn an Android game into a PC game. First confirm your exact Galaxy model supports DeX over your chosen connection, then connect a display, switch to DeX, pair a controller if the game supports one, and test the title before relying on the setup.
What DeX can—and cannot—do for gaming
Samsung DeX gives a compatible Galaxy phone or tablet a desktop-style interface on an external display. You can open Android apps in that environment, connect input devices, and play games on a larger screen. The game still runs on the Galaxy device; DeX is the display and interface environment, not a Windows gaming PC or a guarantee of console-like behavior.
Whether a particular game feels at home on a monitor depends on the game itself. It must handle external display output and the input method you want to use. A game may show in a fixed-size mobile window rather than filling or resizing freely across the display. Samsung Developer explains that apps that do not meet Android multi-window requirements may not be freely resizable in DeX. Samsung does not provide a universal DeX game compatibility list in the official material reviewed for this guide.

Think of DeX as one way to put a Galaxy gaming session on a bigger screen, not as a way to upgrade the game or device. A monitor does not guarantee a desktop layout, a controller does not guarantee that a game will recognize it, and a wireless connection does not guarantee a particular response time. Those are separate compatibility questions to check before you buy accessories or plan a long session.
Check your Galaxy model before buying accessories
DeX support depends on both the exact device and the connection method. Samsung maintains separate compatibility information for wired DeX, wireless DeX and DeX for PC; support for one route does not establish support for the others. Check Samsung Support’s current US DeX compatibility list for your exact model before purchasing an adapter or assuming wireless display support. The list can change as devices and software are released.
As examples of model-specific exclusions on Samsung’s US list accessed October 13, 2026, the Z Flip7 FE and earlier Z Flip models are not compatible with DeX on an external TV or monitor by HDMI or DeX cable, with DeX for PC, or with wireless DeX to a TV or monitor. Samsung also lists the Galaxy Tab S10 FE and Tab S9 FE series as lacking HDMI output and wireless DeX. These examples describe the US support list, not a universal rule for every region or future device; verify your own model and intended connection.

When checking the list, match the full model name and the type of connection you want to use. Do not infer support from the presence of a USB-C port, from a similar model name, or from another Galaxy device you own. If you are shopping for an adapter, check first; an accessory cannot add DeX display support to an unsupported phone or tablet.
There is no single fixed shopping list for everyone. If you already have a supported Galaxy device and an HDMI monitor or TV, the additional wired item may be a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable, plus an HDMI cable if the adapter does not connect directly. Wireless use may avoid those display cables, but requires a supported Galaxy model and a compatible display. For gaming on a larger screen, wired HDMI is the most straightforward documented path if your device supports it. Choose wireless when convenience matters and your device and display are compatible, but test the actual game before treating it as a dependable gaming setup.
The practical trade-off is simplicity versus flexibility. A wired setup needs a cable path from the Galaxy device to the HDMI display, but Samsung documents the adapter connection directly. Wireless avoids running a cable to the display, but relies on the supported wireless-display path and the particular TV, monitor or dongle. DeX for PC is a different use case: it places DeX in a Windows PC environment and should not be confused with using that PC as a simple HDMI monitor.

Set up wired DeX on a monitor or TV
- Confirm support. Check Samsung Support’s current DeX list for your exact Galaxy model and confirm that it supports an external display by cable. Do this before buying an adapter.
- Connect the display. Plug the USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or compatible DeX cable into the Galaxy device, then connect it to the display’s HDMI input. Select the matching HDMI input on the monitor or TV.
- Start DeX. Accept the DeX prompt on the Galaxy device. If the external display shows a mirror of the phone instead, open the notification or quick settings panel and select Samsung DeX.
- Connect your game input. Pair a compatible Bluetooth controller in the Galaxy device’s Bluetooth settings, if you want to use one. A controller is optional for a game that supports touch input, but confirm controller support for the particular game.
- Open and test the game. Check whether it fills the display as expected and whether its controls work correctly. Try the game before starting a session you cannot easily interrupt.
Samsung warns that DeX restarts when the HDMI cable is removed. Save work before unplugging or changing the cable connection.
If the device presents a prompt to start DeX, accept it. If it starts ordinary screen mirroring instead, use the quick settings or notification panel to switch to DeX. The external display and the phone or tablet are not necessarily showing the same interface: DeX is the desktop-style environment on the external screen, while the Galaxy device remains the device running the app.
Before settling in, check the display’s input, the game’s sound and the controller response. These are practical checks, not a guarantee of particular performance. Avoid unplugging HDMI to reposition the setup without saving anything you need; the DeX restart warning makes a cable change more disruptive than simply moving a wireless display connection.
Set up wireless DeX
- Check both ends. Confirm that your Galaxy model supports wireless DeX and that the TV or monitor supports the required wireless display connection, such as Miracast. Samsung displays may have their own supported connection flow.
- Open DeX’s wireless connection menu. On the Galaxy device, select the compatible display from the wireless DeX connection options and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Switch from mirroring if needed. If the display shows the phone screen rather than the DeX desktop, open the notification or quick settings panel and choose Samsung DeX.
- Pair the controller and test the game. Use Bluetooth settings to pair a compatible controller, then verify that the game recognizes it and displays correctly.
Wireless connection quality and performance depend on the display, and Samsung does not guarantee performance with every compatible third-party TV or dongle. The official guidance does not provide a gaming-specific latency measurement, so do not assume that a wireless connection will feel suitable for every game.

Check the display maker’s connection instructions and Samsung’s compatibility list. Choose and test a controller
Samsung identifies compatible Bluetooth controllers, including an Xbox controller, as an option for Galaxy gaming. Pair the controller with the Galaxy device through its Bluetooth settings, then launch the game and verify that it accepts controller input. The fact that a controller pairs successfully does not mean every game supports it.
- Check whether the game supports a controller before planning to play without touch controls.
- Test the game’s menus as well as gameplay; input behavior can vary within an app.
- If the game does not respond, check its own controller settings and confirm the controller is paired to the Galaxy device. A working Bluetooth connection alone cannot add controller support to a game that lacks it.
- If touch controls are the game’s only supported input, consider whether the phone or tablet remains accessible while using the external display.
“Which controller works with Samsung DeX?” has two parts: whether the controller can pair with the Galaxy device, and whether the game accepts its input. Samsung names an Xbox controller as one compatible Galaxy gaming option, but that does not guarantee that every model, game or feature will work in the same way. Verify the particular controller and title before relying on them together.

Pair the controller to the Galaxy device, not merely to the external display. Then check what happens in the game itself: can you move through menus, start a game and use the intended controls? A game might accept some buttons but not others, or require touch input for a menu. If that makes the experience awkward, a successful Bluetooth pairing by itself has not solved the control problem.
Samsung also describes Xbox Game Pass as an option for streaming games to a Galaxy phone with a compatible controller. Service availability, catalog, subscription terms and performance depend on region and service conditions; confirm those details directly with the service. This is cloud-game streaming, not evidence that every streamed title is a native DeX game.
What to expect from game windows and performance
Window size and external display behavior
DeX provides a desktop-style Android environment, but app behavior is determined in part by how each app handles Android’s multi-window features. Samsung Developer says an app that does not meet multi-window requirements may open in a fixed-size mobile window rather than a freely resizable desktop window. A game therefore may not fill the monitor, and its display behavior cannot be inferred from the fact that it launches in DeX.
This is why the “desktop” in DeX describes the interface rather than a guarantee that every Android app has been built for a desktop-sized screen. A title may launch and still use a narrow phone-shaped layout, keep a fixed-size window, or require controls that do not translate well to the external display. Try any display or window options the game provides, but do not assume that a setting in DeX can make an app support features it has not implemented.
Controller and game compatibility
Compatibility is title-specific. A game can launch but fail to use a controller, or it can accept controller input while presenting a window or layout that is not well suited to a large screen. Samsung’s general guidance on Galaxy gaming and controllers is not a game-by-game DeX compatibility list. Test the exact title, device, display and control method you plan to use.

Performance claims
Samsung Business Insights wrote on April 15, 2026, that the Galaxy S26 series had “the most powerful processor yet on a Samsung mobile device” and was “specifically designed to support gaming.” Those are Samsung’s own marketing statements, not independent benchmarks, and they do not establish how a particular game performs in DeX. The official sources cited here provide no named independent DeX gaming statistic or comparative measurements for frame rate, input latency or thermal behavior.
Performance can vary with the Galaxy model, game, display connection and service when streaming. There is no verified benchmark here that lets you predict a frame rate or compare DeX gaming directly with a PC or console. Treat any claim about an exact gaming result as something that needs device- and game-specific measurement, rather than a result guaranteed by the DeX feature itself.

Troubleshooting common problems
The phone screen appears instead of the DeX desktop
Open the Galaxy device’s notification or quick settings panel and select Samsung DeX. For wireless connections, confirm that you selected DeX through its wireless connection flow rather than starting ordinary screen mirroring.
The external display does not connect
- Recheck Samsung’s compatibility list for your exact model and the wired or wireless route you are using.
- For a wired setup, confirm that the display is on the correct HDMI input and that the adapter or cable is compatible. A USB-C connector alone does not establish that the device supports DeX output.
- For a wireless setup, confirm the display’s Miracast or Samsung DeX compatibility. Samsung cautions that performance is not guaranteed on every compatible third-party display or dongle.
For a wired connection, retrace the chain: Galaxy device, adapter or cable, HDMI connection, and the selected display input. If one link is incompatible, changing game settings will not fix the connection. For wireless DeX, check that the device and display both support the wireless method, then choose the display in DeX’s own connection menu.
The game is in a small or fixed-size window
This may reflect the game’s app behavior rather than a failed DeX connection. Samsung Developer notes that apps that do not meet Android multi-window requirements may open in fixed-size windows. Try the available in-app display options, but do not expect every title to become freely resizable.
The controller pairs but does not control the game
Confirm that the game supports controller input and check its settings. Pairing is a device-level connection; it cannot make a game accept controls the game does not implement.
If the game responds in some screens but not others, test both its menus and gameplay and look for its own control settings. If it does not respond at all, confirm the controller remains paired to the Galaxy device and check the game’s documented input support. The existence of a Bluetooth connection is not a compatibility test for the title.
DeX restarts after disconnecting HDMI
Samsung says DeX restarts when the HDMI cable is removed. Save your work before unplugging, then reconnect and select DeX again if needed.
