RVM (Ruby Version Manager) lets you install several Ruby interpreters on one VPS, switch the active interpreter for a shell or project, and keep each application’s gems in an isolated gemset. The core workflow is: install RVM with its official installer, install a Ruby with rvm install, select it with rvm use, and create a project gemset with rvm gemset create.
This guide covers a single-user VPS, shared-server options, permissions, deployment habits, cleanup, upgrades, and the failure modes that most often leave the wrong Ruby active.

What RVM changes on a VPS
Without a version manager, a server commonly exposes one system Ruby to every application. Upgrading that Ruby can then break an older application, while installing another version may overwrite commands or libraries used by a different service. RVM places interpreters and their gem collections under RVM-managed directories so that projects can select compatible environments independently.
The project describes RVM as “a command-line tool which allows you to easily install, manage, and work with multiple ruby environments from interpreters to sets of gems.” See the official RVM site for the installer and current documentation. RVM changes the shell environment; it does not, by itself, deploy your application, configure a web server, or supervise a process.

Check the release and plan the account model first
Confirm the current RVM release
RVM’s upgrade guidance uses the stable channel as the practical equivalent of “latest.” Stable releases have historically appeared every month or two with incremental version changes. The latest tagged release identified in the available records is RVM 1.29.12, dated January 2021; that date is not evidence that no newer release exists in 2026. Check RVM’s GitHub releases page and the project blog immediately before installing or upgrading.
The changelog has an unreleased “Next” section that mentions work such as OpenSSL 3 support for Ruby 3.2 and 3.3 and doas support on OpenBSD and FreeBSD. The changelog entry alone does not establish that those changes shipped in a tagged release, so do not assume they are present in the version you install.

For a normal application VPS, a dedicated non-root deployment user with single-user RVM is the least complicated arrangement. Use multi-user or mixed mode only when you have a reason to support several accounts and can document ownership and group membership.
Prerequisites before running the installer
- SSH access to the VPS and a shell supported by the installer.
- A non-root account for the application. Keep root for system administration.
sudorights if RVM must install operating-system packages while compiling Ruby.- Enough disk space and memory for source builds; the exact requirement depends on the Ruby version and whether a binary package is available.
- A decision about which Ruby versions each application requires. Record the version in deployment notes rather than relying on whichever version happened to be installed first.
RVM can ask for sudo to install system dependencies. The user who runs rvm install therefore needs sudo rights during that operation. If sudo is unavailable, automatic dependency installation can be disabled, but you must install and maintain every required compiler, header, library, and tool yourself. A failed dependency check is not fixed by repeatedly running the Ruby installer.
Install RVM on the VPS
1. Connect as the intended account
Log in over SSH as the application or deployment user, not as root. If you administer several applications, create separate users or otherwise keep their home directories and credentials distinct. Run the following commands from that account’s shell.
2. Run the stable installer
The official installer is curl-based. The commonly documented stable-channel command is:
curl -sSL https://get.rvm.io | bash -s stableThe leading backslash bypasses a shell alias named curl. Review the installer output, especially any instruction telling you to load the RVM script or add a user to a group. Do not paste an installer command copied from an untrusted mirror.

The installer can also request a Ruby in the same operation. The documented pattern is:
curl -sSL https://get.rvm.io | bash -s stable --rubyInstalling RVM and Ruby separately is easier to troubleshoot because you can see whether a failure belongs to RVM itself, an operating-system dependency, or the selected Ruby.
3. Load RVM into the current shell
Open a new login shell, or source the initialization script named by the installer. For a single-user installation, the path is normally under your home directory:
source ~/.rvm/scripts/rvmVerify that the command is available:
type rvm
rvm --versionIf type rvm reports that the command is unknown, the installation may have completed but the shell was not initialized. Start a fresh SSH session and inspect the installer’s shell-profile instructions before changing files manually.
4. Verify permissions and account boundaries
Run rvm --version as every account that will deploy or operate the application. In multi-user mode, confirm that the account has the required group access and that its login shell loads the system RVM script. A command that works for the administrator but fails for the service account is an account-initialization problem, not a Ruby version problem.
Install and select Ruby versions
List versions that RVM knows about
Ask RVM for its known interpreters:
rvm list knownThe list is a discovery aid, not a promise that every entry will build on your operating system. Very old Rubies may require obsolete compilers or OpenSSL libraries, while newer Rubies may require dependency support that an old RVM release does not provide.
Install a Ruby
Install the version your application supports:
rvm install <ruby-version>The RVM basics guide illustrates the syntax with rvm install 2.1.1. That example is intentionally old; use it only when an application specifically requires Ruby 2.1.1. For a current project, substitute the version tested by that project and verify its support policy.

During installation, RVM may compile Ruby and may invoke sudo for missing operating-system dependencies. Read the first error rather than the final summary: a missing development package, compiler failure, certificate problem, or unsupported OpenSSL combination needs a different remedy.
Use a version for the current shell
After installation, select the interpreter:
rvm use <ruby-version>Check both the RVM selection and the executable that the shell resolves:
rvm current
ruby -v
which rubyThese checks catch a common VPS mistake: RVM selected one interpreter, but a system path earlier in PATH is still supplying another. Start a new login shell after correcting profile initialization and repeat the checks.
Set a default for the account
To make a version the default for new shells opened by this user, use:

rvm use <ruby-version> --defaultA default is account-specific. It does not change another user’s environment and should not replace an explicit project selection in deployment scripts.
Isolate dependencies with gemsets
A gemset is a separate collection of Ruby gems associated with a Ruby interpreter. Keeping one gemset per application prevents two projects from upgrading the same library underneath each other. Every newly installed Ruby also receives the gems listed in RVM’s global gemset file, so review global entries if a fresh interpreter unexpectedly contains packages.
Create and select a project gemset
Use a descriptive name:
rvm gemset create <name>
rvm use <ruby-version>@<name>For example:
rvm gemset create billing_app
rvm use 3.2.2@billing_appThe second command selects both the Ruby and the gemset. If the Ruby version differs on your server, replace 3.2.2 with the version you installed. Install the application’s dependencies only after this selection; otherwise they may land in the default or global gemset.

Inspect and change gemsets
rvm gemset list
rvm gemset use <name>rvm gemset list shows gemsets associated with the current Ruby. rvm gemset use changes the gemset in the current shell while retaining the Ruby selection. When troubleshooting a missing gem, print rvm current and confirm that the expected ruby@ gemset pair is active before reinstalling anything.
Keep project selection repeatable
Document the Ruby and gemset names in the deployment procedure and select them explicitly at the start of every release. If you use project files or shell hooks to select an environment automatically, review their behavior for non-interactive shells; a service manager may not read the same profile files as an SSH session.
A repeatable VPS deployment sequence
RVM is most reliable when environment selection is an explicit deployment step rather than an assumption about the login shell. A typical sequence for a dedicated application account is:
- SSH as the application account and load RVM.
- Run
rvm use <ruby-version>@<gemset>so every following command targets the intended environment. - Confirm with
rvm current,ruby -v, andwhich ruby. - Change to the application directory.
- Install or update the application’s declared gems while the project gemset is active.
- Run the application’s tests or startup checks in that same shell.
- Configure the process supervisor to load the same RVM environment, or invoke the environment-selection command in the supervisor’s start command.
The last step matters because services commonly start without an interactive login profile. An application that works over SSH but fails under a supervisor is often running the system Ruby or an empty gemset.
Permissions, sudo, and dependency failures
When you have sudo
Allow RVM to install the system dependencies it needs, then review the package changes according to your server policy. Keep application files owned by the application user; sudo should be used for operating-system dependencies, not for routine bundle or gem installation inside the project.
When you do not have sudo
Disable automatic dependency installation only if you can manage dependencies yourself. Install the compiler, development headers, libraries, and certificate tooling required by the Ruby version and its extensions, then rerun rvm install. The exact package names vary by distribution and release, so use your operating system’s package documentation rather than copying a list intended for a different VPS image.
When a shared installation reports permission errors
- Check which user owns the RVM directory and whether the deployment account has the documented group membership.
- Start a new login session after changing group membership.
- Confirm that the account’s shell loads the system RVM script.
- Do not “fix” the error by recursively making the entire installation world-writable.
Remove an unused Ruby safely
RVM has two removal commands with different effects:

Before removal, list projects and service definitions that reference the version, switch away from it in active shells, and record the replacement version. Removing a Ruby does not migrate an application’s gems to another interpreter; recreate or repopulate the project gemset under the replacement Ruby.
Upgrade RVM without losing project clarity
Use the stable channel rather than treating an arbitrary development build as “latest.” Before an upgrade, record the output of rvm --version, the Ruby versions in use, and each project’s gemset. Upgrade during a maintenance window, then test one application at a time.
- Check the current stable release on the official RVM site and the GitHub releases page.
- Read the release notes for changes affecting your operating system, compiler, OpenSSL, or shell.
- Upgrade RVM using the project’s documented stable-channel method.
- Open a fresh login shell and run
rvm --version. - For each application, select its Ruby and gemset, run its test suite, and verify the service account’s startup path.
Because the latest tagged release identified in the available records is 1.29.12 from January 2021, treat the installed version as a risk decision: verify whether a newer tagged release exists before you rely on behavior described in older guides.
Troubleshooting by symptom
rvm: command not found
The shell has not loaded RVM. Start a new login shell, source the single-user script under ~/.rvm/scripts/rvm, or follow the profile instructions printed by the installer. If the command works interactively but not in a service, add explicit environment initialization to the service’s start procedure instead of assuming an SSH profile is read.
The wrong Ruby runs
Run rvm current, ruby -v, and which ruby. If they disagree with the project’s requirement, execute rvm use <ruby-version>@<gemset> again and inspect PATH. Check the account: a default selected for one user has no effect on another.
Gems appear to be missing
Confirm the active Ruby and gemset before installing packages. A gem installed under ruby-a@app_one is not automatically visible under ruby-a@app_two, nor under the global gemset. Install the dependency in the environment that the application actually starts with.
Ruby compilation stops on a library or OpenSSL error
Read the first missing-header or library message, verify that the operating-system dependencies match the Ruby version, and check whether the installed RVM release documents support for your OpenSSL generation. Do not assume a changelog item in an unreleased “Next” section is available in your tagged installation.
Installation asks for sudo
That is expected when RVM is attempting to install system dependencies. Authenticate only if the account is authorized and the package changes are acceptable. Without sudo, cancel dependency automation, install the prerequisites through your normal administrative process, and rerun the Ruby installation.

Final checklist
- Install RVM under the correct user and load it in that user’s shell.
- Verify the current stable release before production use.
- Install only the Ruby versions your applications require.
- Select the Ruby and project gemset explicitly before installing gems or running tests.
- Grant sudo only when dependency installation requires it, or manage dependencies manually.
- Test the service account and non-interactive startup path, not just an SSH session.
- Use
rvm uninstallandrvm removedeliberately when cleaning up.
