Rowan is Rocket Money’s AI financial assistant for Premium+ members. After you activate it in the Rocket Money app and connect eligible accounts, you can use your phone’s messaging app to ask about spending, budgets, bills, subscriptions, and recurring charges. Rowan reads the information already available in your Rocket Money account; it is not a standalone ledger and it cannot move money or change your bank accounts.
What Rowan can do by text
Rowan puts a conversational interface over your Rocket Money account and connected financial accounts. Instead of opening a dashboard and filtering transactions manually, you send a question in a text message and receive an answer based on the data Rocket Money has imported.
Its documented uses include:
- Analyzing spending for a month or another period.
- Explaining spending patterns and identifying large categories.
- Providing weekly spending reports.
- Recategorizing transactions, ignoring transactions, and creating categorization rules.
- Creating or adjusting budgets and reporting how much remains.
- Monitoring recurring bills, subscriptions, free trials, and changed recurring charges.
- Guiding you through eligible subscription-cancellation or bill-negotiation requests.
Because Rowan depends on your Rocket Money data, its answers are only as complete and current as the accounts and transactions connected to that account.
Before you send your first message
Activate Rowan in the Rocket Money app
Rowan is included with Premium+, according to Rocket Money’s Help Center. Open the Rocket Money app, sign in, and follow the Rowan activation prompt. The exact screen wording can change as the app is updated, so use the current in-app setup flow rather than relying on an old screenshot or menu name.

Connect the accounts you want analyzed
Link eligible financial accounts during setup or from your Rocket Money account settings. Rowan works with information in Rocket Money and the financial accounts connected to it. If an account is missing, transactions from that account will not appear in Rowan’s spending or budget answers.
Use your phone’s messaging app
Once activation and account linking are complete, Rowan communicates through text messages. Save the Rowan contact if your phone offers that option, and start with a specific question. A question that includes a time period, category, merchant, or desired action usually produces a more useful answer than a broad request such as “Tell me about my money.”
Step-by-step: use Rowan to review spending
- Ask for a snapshot. Text a question such as
How much did I spend this month?,Where did my money go?, orShow my largest categories. - Clarify the period or category. If the answer is too broad, ask for a specific month, category, merchant, or comparison, such as
How much did I spend on restaurants this month? - Inspect unusual results. Compare the categories and merchants Rowan returns with your own receipts or account statement. A transaction may be delayed, duplicated, or assigned to the wrong category.
- Correct errors. Ask Rowan to recategorize a transaction, ignore it, or create a rule for future transactions from the same merchant.
- Review the updated result. After a correction, ask for the category total again. This confirms that the change was applied to the record Rowan is using.
Useful spending prompts
How much have I spent this week?Where did my money go last month?What are my three largest spending categories?Which merchants increased my spending this month?Recategorize this transaction as groceries.Ignore this transaction.Create a rule for future transactions from this merchant.
Rowan can explain patterns and provide weekly spend reports, but it is not a substitute for checking a bank statement when a transaction is disputed or appears fraudulent.

Merchant data does not always describe a purchase accurately. A department-store purchase may contain groceries, a digital wallet may obscure the original merchant, and a recurring charge may be placed in a generic category. Rowan lets you correct the record from the conversation instead of editing every similar transaction manually.
Recategorize one transaction
Identify the merchant, date, or amount in your message and state the category you want. For example: Change the $42.18 transaction from May 12 at Market Street to groceries. If Rowan asks a follow-up question, answer it before assuming the change was saved.

Ignore a transaction
Use an ignore request for a reimbursement, transfer, test charge, or other item that should not count toward ordinary spending. Confirm that the transaction is the one you intended to exclude.
Create a categorization rule
If the same merchant is repeatedly mislabeled, ask Rowan to create a rule. Rules can reduce future cleanup, but review the first few results because one merchant can sell products that belong in different categories.

Ask Rowan how much budget remains
Rowan can help create a budget, adjust it on request, suggest a category based on recurring spending, and tell you how much remains to spend. A budget answer depends on both the budget limits you set and the transactions Rowan has received, so a newly connected account or delayed transaction can change the result.
- Check your current position. Ask
How much do I have left in my overall budget?or name a category:How much is left in my dining budget? - Set a category budget. Ask Rowan to create a budget for a category and provide the amount and period, such as monthly.
- Adjust the limit. If your plan changed, ask Rowan to increase or decrease the category amount. State whether the change is temporary or intended for future periods if Rowan asks.
- Use recurring spending as a guide. Ask Rowan to suggest a category from your recurring spending, then review the suggestion before accepting it.
- Check the remaining amount again. After a budget change or transaction correction, request the balance again to verify that the new figure reflects your intended setup.
Budget prompts to copy
Create a monthly budget for transportation.How much can I still spend on groceries this month?Increase my entertainment budget by $50 for this month.Which category is closest to its limit?Suggest a budget category for my recurring coffee purchases.
“How much is left” is a tracking question, not a guarantee that the money is available in your bank account. Check your actual account balance and upcoming obligations before spending.
Track bills, subscriptions, and free trials
Rowan can monitor recurring charges, identify upcoming bills or subscriptions, track free trials, and alert you when recurring charges increase. This is useful when a trial converts to a paid plan or when a familiar subscription changes price.

Find upcoming charges
Ask What bills and subscriptions are coming up? or specify a time window. Rowan’s answer is based on recurring charges it has detected in connected-account data, so a charge paid from an unconnected account will not be included.

Ask Which free trials are ending soon? and request a reminder when the timing matters. Treat the reminder as a prompt to verify the provider’s cancellation deadline; trial terms can vary and a reminder does not itself cancel the trial.
Spot price increases
Ask Which recurring charges increased recently? Compare the returned amount with the provider’s notice or invoice. A changed amount can result from tax, usage, an exchange-rate difference, or a genuine price increase.
Request help with a subscription or bill
For an eligible subscription, ask Rowan for help canceling it. For an eligible bill, ask to start a bill-negotiation request. Rocket Money describes these as guided workflows: Rowan may ask a follow-up question, present next steps, or require you to confirm details before proceeding. Do not assume that every provider, bill, or cancellation can be completed automatically.

What Rowan can and cannot access
Connected-account access is read-only through Plaid. Rowan’s security documentation summarizes the model as: “We can look. We can’t touch.” When an account is connected, the requested capability is the ability to read transactions.

Depending on the connection, Rowan can read transaction information, account names and types, masked last-four digits, and balances. It cannot move money, make payments, transfer funds, issue cards, or change the connected account. A guided cancellation or bill-negotiation workflow is therefore different from bank access: it may help you initiate an eligible service request, but it does not give Rowan authority to operate your bank account.
Security practices for texting
- Do not send full account numbers, passwords, one-time codes, card security codes, or identity documents in a text message.
- Use the same phone number associated with your Rocket Money account and protect your phone with a passcode or biometric lock.
- Review a message carefully before confirming a cancellation, budget change, or categorization rule.
- Contact your bank directly if you see an unauthorized transaction; Rowan’s read-only connection does not replace the bank’s fraud process.

Rowan is most useful when you want a quick answer across the accounts already connected to Rocket Money. A dashboard or statement remains better for auditing individual entries, while a manual ledger is appropriate when you need records outside the connected-account system.

An account or transaction is missing
Confirm that the account is connected and eligible, then check whether the transaction has posted. Pending transactions, connection interruptions, and institutions that are not supported can prevent an item from appearing. Reconnect or refresh the account in Rocket Money if the app offers that option.
The category total looks wrong
Ask Rowan to list the transactions behind the total, then recategorize, ignore, or rule-correct the specific item. Recheck the total after the correction. Do not assume that a merchant name always identifies the purchase category.
The budget balance changed unexpectedly
Look for a newly imported transaction, a corrected category, an adjusted budget limit, or a new connected account. Ask Rowan which transactions are counted in the category and confirm the budget period.

A reminder or recurring charge is missing
Verify that the charge is present in connected-account history and that the provider uses a recognizable recurring pattern. Annual, irregular, newly started, or account-billed charges may not be identified immediately.
Rowan asks a follow-up question
Answer with the requested merchant, date, amount, account, or confirmation. Guided actions may require additional information, and refusing to provide it leaves the request incomplete. If the task is not listed as eligible, use the provider’s normal cancellation or support channel.
Availability, plan, and changing product details
Rocket Money’s Help Center describes Rowan as included with Premium+. Plan inclusion, account eligibility, supported institutions, platform behavior, and available actions can change. The published material does not establish a complete country, bank, or account-type eligibility matrix, so confirm availability in your own app before relying on Rowan for a deadline-sensitive bill or trial.

Rowan’s homepage also presents an average guessed subscription spending figure of $86 among 1,000 people surveyed by C+R Research. The page does not state a survey year in the available material, so treat the number as an undated marketing statistic rather than a current benchmark for your own subscriptions.
A reliable routine for using Rowan
- Review weekly. Request the weekly spend report and inspect the largest categories.
- Correct promptly. Fix obvious merchant or category errors while the purchase is easy to remember.
- Check upcoming recurring charges. Look for trials, renewals, and increases before they post.
- Check budgets before discretionary spending. Ask for the remaining category amount, then consider pending obligations and your actual bank balance.
- Audit monthly. Compare Rowan’s totals with statements from each connected institution and investigate discrepancies.
The most dependable use of Rowan is as a conversational monitoring layer: it can summarize connected data, maintain categories and budgets, surface recurring charges, and guide eligible requests. It should not be treated as a payment tool, a complete record of every account you own, or an automatic guarantee that a subscription has been canceled.
