Roku private listening is now labeled Headphone Mode. The simplest setup is the Roku mobile app: connect your phone or tablet and Roku device to the same Wi‑Fi network, connect wired or Bluetooth headphones to the phone, open Remote, and tap the Headphone icon. Compatible Roku players and TVs can also pair Bluetooth headphones directly, while some voice remotes provide a headphone jack. Which options appear depends on your exact Roku model.
Choose the right Roku listening method
Use this decision guide before pairing anything:
| Method | Roku compatibility | Headphone connection | Phone or tablet required? | Listeners and controls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Roku mobile app Headphone Mode | Supported Roku devices using the current mobile app | Wired headphones plugged into the phone/tablet, or Bluetooth headphones paired with it | Yes; the mobile device must stay connected to Roku over Wi‑Fi | Up to four mobile devices at once; the app includes an audio-delay adjustment |
| Direct Bluetooth Headphone Mode | Selected Roku players, soundbars and TVs only | Bluetooth headphones paired directly with Roku | No | Roku does not state a simultaneous-listener limit for this mode; volume works from the headphones or a compatible Roku remote |
| Voice remote headphone jack | Roku devices supplied with a compatible voice remote that has a 3.5 mm headphone jack | Wired earbuds or headphones plugged into the remote | No | One Roku voice remote can use Headphone Mode at a time |
For the broadest compatibility and the option to let several people listen, start with the mobile app. Direct Bluetooth is convenient when your Roku hardware supports it and you do not want to use a phone. A headphone-jack remote is the most straightforward wired option, but it is limited to one remote listener.
What you need before starting
- A Roku device running on your home wireless network.
- The latest Roku remote app for iOS or Android if you are using mobile Headphone Mode.
- The phone or tablet and Roku device connected to the same Wi‑Fi network for the app method.
- Wired headphones with the connector required by your phone or remote, or Bluetooth headphones for the app and direct-Bluetooth methods.
- For direct pairing, Bluetooth headphones that support Bluetooth 4.2 or greater.
Keep the Roku mobile app connected to the Roku device you actually want to control. If the app is connected to a different Roku player or TV, the headphone session will follow that device instead.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up the app and network connection
- Install or update the official Roku remote app on your iPhone, iPad or Android phone/tablet.
- Connect the mobile device and Roku player or TV to the same Wi‑Fi network. A phone on cellular data, a guest network isolated from other devices, or a different household Wi‑Fi network will not discover the Roku device.
- Open the app and select the Roku device you want to control. Confirm that the on-screen remote responds before trying Headphone Mode.
Connect your headphones to the mobile device
For wired headphones, plug them into the phone or tablet. If the device has no matching headphone socket, use the adapter intended for that device. For Bluetooth headphones, pair them with the phone or tablet through the device’s normal Bluetooth settings before opening Headphone Mode. The headphones must be connected to the mobile device, not merely switched on nearby.
Turn Headphone Mode on
- In the Roku app, tap Remote.
- Tap the Headphone icon.
- Set the volume to a safe level before putting the headphones on.
Audio should now play through the headphones while the Roku program continues on the screen. Tap the Headphone icon again to turn the mode off. With wired headphones, plugging them in or unplugging them while the Remote screen is open also toggles the mode.
Let more than one person listen
Roku documents support for up to four mobile devices using Headphone Mode at the same time. Each listener needs the Roku app, a connection to the same Roku device, and headphones connected to that listener’s own phone or tablet. This is the app method’s defining advantage over the single-remote arrangement.

Adjust audio timing
If speech does not line up with the picture, activate Headphone Mode, open the app’s gear/Controls menu, choose Adjust audio delay, and select Get started. Follow the listening test, then use Advanced adjustment for finer tuning. Make the adjustment while watching the program that exhibits the problem; a setting that works for one setup may not be ideal after changing headphones or the mobile device.
Method 2: Pair Bluetooth headphones directly with Roku
Direct Bluetooth Headphone Mode avoids using a phone, but it is available only on specified Roku hardware. Roku lists these compatible families and models:
| Roku hardware listed as compatible | Qualification |
|---|---|
| Streambar SE, Streambar and Streambar Pro | Headphone Mode applies to the built-in streaming player; see the Streambar limitation below |
| Smart Soundbar | Direct Bluetooth pairing is supported |
| Roku Ultra models 4800, 4802 and 4850 | Model number matters; check the label or Roku device information |
| Roku Ultra LT model 4801 | Supported model |
| Selected 2025 Roku TVs | Only the selected models Roku lists support this mode |
| Roku Plus Series TV and Pro Series TV | Supported TV families |
Roku lists the Roku Express, Roku Premiere, Roku Streaming Stick 4K and Roku Streaming Stick 4K+ as not supporting direct Bluetooth Headphone Mode. If your model is not in either list, use the mobile app or a compatible voice remote instead of assuming that a Bluetooth menu will appear.

Pair headphones for the first time
- Press Home on the Roku remote.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Remotes & devices.
- Choose Wireless headphones.
- Select Add new wireless headphones.
- Put the headphones into Bluetooth pairing mode according to their controls.
- Wait for the scan to display the headphones, then select them.
The headphones must support Bluetooth 4.2 or greater. Pairing mode is different from simply turning headphones on; use the manufacturer’s pairing control if Roku cannot find them.
Reconnect after the initial pairing
When the headphones have already been paired, go to Settings > Remotes & devices > Wireless headphones and select the headphones to reconnect. Volume can be changed from the headphones or a compatible Roku remote. Play, pause, skip and other media controls depend on the headphone model, so their presence should not be assumed.
Understand the Streambar limitation
On Streambar products, Headphone Mode covers audio from the Streambar’s built-in streaming player. It does not cover external consoles, Blu-ray players, cable or satellite boxes, or Bluetooth audio sources such as a phone or computer connected to the Streambar. If the picture comes from an external input, use that source’s own headphone output or another listening method.

Method 3: Use a Roku voice remote with a headphone jack
Some Roku devices include a voice remote with a built-in headphone jack. Plug wired earbuds or headphones into that jack and use the remote’s Headphone Mode. This route does not require the mobile app or Bluetooth pairing.
Only one Roku voice remote can be connected and use Headphone Mode at a time. If a headphone-jack remote is active, mobile Headphone Mode on connected phones is deactivated. If your voice remote has no headphone jack, it cannot be upgraded into one; use the mobile app or direct Bluetooth on supported Roku hardware.

Troubleshoot Roku private listening
The Headphone icon is missing in the app
- Update the Roku mobile app to its latest available version.
- Confirm that the Roku device supports mobile Headphone Mode.
- Verify that the app is connected to the intended Roku device and that both devices are on the same Wi‑Fi network.
- If a voice remote with a headphone jack is currently using Headphone Mode, unplug its headphones or stop that session; mobile Headphone Mode is deactivated while that remote session is active.
There is no sound in the headphones
- Check the phone, tablet or headphone volume and make sure none is muted.
- For wired headphones, unplug and firmly reconnect the plug. If the mobile device needs an adapter, confirm that the adapter is seated.
- For Bluetooth headphones in the app method, open the phone/tablet Bluetooth settings and confirm that the headphones are connected to that device.
- In the Roku app, verify that the Remote screen controls the Roku device whose program you are watching.
- For direct Bluetooth, return to Settings > Remotes & devices > Wireless headphones and reconnect the paired headphones.
Audio and video are out of sync
- Activate Headphone Mode in the Roku app.
- Open the gear/Controls menu.
- Choose Adjust audio delay, then Get started.
- Use Advanced adjustment if the initial setting does not align speech and picture closely enough.
This documented adjustment is available through the app route. The direct-Bluetooth and remote-jack instructions do not document an equivalent Roku delay control.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Sound stutters or contains pops
For wired headphones, remove and reinsert the plug. For Bluetooth headphones, pair them again with the phone/tablet or Roku, depending on the method you are using. Re-pairing establishes a fresh connection rather than merely changing the volume.
Bluetooth headphones do not appear in Roku’s scan
- Confirm that the headphones are actively in pairing mode, not just powered on.
- Check that the headphones support Bluetooth 4.2 or greater.
- Confirm that your Roku model is one of the families that supports direct Bluetooth Headphone Mode. Unsupported models will not gain the feature by changing a menu setting.
Headphones work for streaming apps but not an external device
If you are using a Streambar, direct Headphone Mode is limited to the Streambar’s built-in streaming player. It does not carry audio from an external game console, Blu-ray player, cable or satellite box, or Bluetooth audio source such as a phone or computer.
Which headphones should you use?
For the mobile app
Choose wired headphones if you want the simplest connection: plug them into the phone or tablet after opening the Remote screen. Choose Bluetooth headphones if you prefer a wireless connection, but pair them with the mobile device before starting Headphone Mode. In either case, the phone or tablet remains part of the audio path, so keep it charged and within reliable Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth range.

Buy or use Bluetooth headphones only after verifying both sides of the compatibility question: the Roku must support direct Bluetooth Headphone Mode, and the headphones must support Bluetooth 4.2 or greater. A Bluetooth label by itself does not prove that an older Roku model can pair directly.
For a headphone-jack remote
Use wired earbuds or headphones with the connector that fits the remote’s jack. This is a useful option when the Roku model lacks direct Bluetooth and you do not want to use a phone, but remember that one remote listener is supported at a time.
A reliable setup checklist
- Identify the Roku model in the device information or on its label.
- Decide whether you need one listener or several. Up to four listeners points to the mobile app.
- Decide whether using a phone is acceptable. If not, check for direct Bluetooth support or a headphone-jack remote.
- Match the headphone connection to the chosen method: wired or phone Bluetooth for the app, Bluetooth 4.2-or-newer for direct pairing, or wired headphones for the remote jack.
- Start playback, set a safe volume, and test speech synchronization before settling in.
- If the feature disappears later, check whether a headphone-jack remote session is active, whether the app changed to another Roku device, and whether the phone and Roku remain on the same Wi‑Fi network.
Bottom line
For most households, the Roku app is the best starting point: it supports wired or Bluetooth headphones connected to a phone, includes audio-delay adjustment, and allows up to four mobile devices to listen privately. Use direct Bluetooth when your Roku is one of the compatible models and you want to remove the phone from the setup. Use a headphone-jack voice remote for a simple wired connection when only one person needs private audio. Always verify the Roku model and headphone connection type before troubleshooting or buying equipment.
