To access a Windows 11 computer remotely, that computer must be the host and must run Windows 11 Pro. The device you use to connect—the client—can be another Windows edition or a supported macOS, iOS, or Android device. On the host, verify the edition, enable Remote Desktop, record the PC name, and then enter that name in the client app.
This guide follows Microsoft’s current setup flow for Windows 11. It covers the documented local setup and connection steps, explains what to do when the host runs Home, and separates Remote Desktop from Remote Assistance. Microsoft’s full setup reference is How to use Remote Desktop.
Understand the host, client, and Pro requirement
Remote Desktop uses two devices:
- Host (remote PC): the Windows 11 computer you want to control. This is the computer that must run a Pro edition of Windows.
- Client: the device in front of you. It runs the Remote Desktop software and can be a Windows PC, a Mac, an iPhone or iPad, or an Android device.
The edition requirement applies only to the host. A Windows 11 Home laptop can be used as a client to connect to a separate Windows 11 Pro host; Home is not automatically disqualified from connecting. The host-side requirement is the important one. Microsoft states it directly: “The PC you want to connect to (the remote PC) must be running Windows Pro edition of Windows.”

Remote Desktop is therefore not a feature that turns every Windows installation into an incoming-access server. If the computer you want to reach is Home, the documented host setup does not apply until that installation is upgraded to Pro.

Client platforms and their documented apps
Microsoft documents a different client application for each major platform. The app name can change as Microsoft updates its clients, so use the current listing for your platform if a label differs from the one below.

Every row in the table still depends on the same Windows Pro host requirement. Changing the client platform does not remove or relax that requirement.
Check whether the Windows 11 host is Pro
Do this check on the computer you intend to access. Checking the edition on the client tells you nothing about whether the remote host can accept the connection.

- Open Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Scroll to Windows specifications.
- Read the value beside Edition.
The edition must identify a Pro installation for the documented Remote Desktop host flow. Record the result before changing any settings. If it says Home, use the Home-to-Pro branch later in this guide rather than continuing as though the host were eligible.
Why this check comes first
The edition determines whether the rest of the procedure is applicable. A client may still be Home, macOS, iOS, or Android; the decisive question is whether the computer accepting the incoming Remote Desktop connection is Pro. Verifying this first prevents you from troubleshooting an app or a PC name when the host edition itself is the blocker.
Keep the two roles straight
The host is the computer that stays available to be controlled. The client is the computer, tablet, or phone from which you initiate the session. You check the Windows edition and enable the feature on the host, but you open the connection app on the client. Mixing those roles is a common source of confusion: a client does not need to be Pro merely because the host does.
If several Windows computers are nearby, write down which one is the host before proceeding. The PC name belongs to that specific machine. The name of the client, its product model, or a label you created in another app cannot substitute for the host identifier shown in Windows.

Once the edition is confirmed, enable the feature on that same computer.
- Open Settings.
- Choose System.
- Select Remote Desktop.
- Turn on the Remote Desktop control.
- Read the confirmation prompt and confirm that you want to enable the feature.
- Under the Remote Desktop page, find PC name and record it exactly as shown.
The PC name is the identifier the client uses in the connection dialog. Preserve its spelling, punctuation, and any characters shown. If you are preparing the host for someone else, send that exact name to the person operating the client, preferably through a channel you already trust.

What successful setup gives you
After confirmation, the Pro computer has Remote Desktop enabled according to the Windows settings page, and you have the host identifier needed by the client applications. The setup does not replace the sign-in step: the person connecting must still authenticate with an account that is used for access to the host.
Use the host’s name, not the client’s
It is easy to record the wrong identifier when two computers are open at once. The correct name is the one displayed under PC name on the Remote Desktop page of the computer you want to control. Do not substitute the model name of the laptop, the name of your phone, or a nickname you created in an app.

Turning on the control and confirming the prompt are both part of the documented flow. If you close the prompt or leave the control off, the client has no completed host setup to use. Return to the same Remote Desktop page and verify the setting before moving to another device.
Connect from another Windows PC
These steps apply when the client is a Windows computer. The client can be Home or another edition; the Pro requirement remains on the host.
- On the client, open the Start menu or Search.
- Type Remote Desktop Connection.
- Open the matching Windows application.
- In the PC field, enter the host’s recorded PC name.
- Select Connect.
- When Windows asks for credentials, sign in with the account used for access to the host.
A successful sequence is therefore: client app opens, the host name is supplied, Connect is selected, and a sign-in prompt appears. Keep the host and client roles straight while working through the prompts; the name belongs in the client, while the account is the one used to access the remote Windows installation.
If the name is rejected immediately
Return to the host and repeat the two documented prerequisites: confirm that the host edition is Pro at Settings > System > About > Windows specifications > Edition, and confirm that Remote Desktop is on at Settings > System > Remote Desktop. Then compare the client entry character by character with the value shown under PC name. These checks address configuration and identification errors without changing unrelated settings.
If you use more than one Windows client
Each Windows client follows the same basic sequence. You do not need to change the host’s edition or repeat the host setup merely because you changed the device used to connect. Enter the same host PC name in the client application, then complete the sign-in prompt. If a second client fails while the first works, start by checking that second client’s entry and app rather than disabling the working host configuration.
Connect from macOS or iOS
Microsoft’s current guide names Windows App for Apple clients. The exact store presentation may vary between macOS and iOS, but the documented flow is the same: add the Windows host, then select it.
- Install or open Windows App on the Mac, iPhone, or iPad.
- Choose the option to add a PC.
- Enter the Windows 11 Pro host’s PC name.
- Save the entry if the app asks you to do so.
- Select the added PC to begin the connection.
- Complete the sign-in prompt with the account used for access to the host.
The app is only the client. The Windows computer being accessed still needs the Pro edition and the enabled Remote Desktop setting described above. If the Apple app displays a different label after an update, look for its function to add a Windows PC rather than assuming that a new label represents a different host requirement.

What to verify in the Apple app
Before selecting the saved entry, compare its PC name with the value recorded on the host. Saving an entry makes it easier to reuse, but it does not correct a mistyped name. If you are adding several hosts, give each saved entry a clear description so you can distinguish the intended Windows 11 Pro computer.
Connect from Android
For Android, Microsoft’s documented client is the Remote Desktop app.
- Open the Remote Desktop app on the Android device.
- Use the add-PC control.
- Enter the host’s PC name exactly as recorded from Windows 11 Pro.
- Select the saved PC.
- Sign in when prompted, using the account used for access to the host.
As with Windows, macOS, and iOS, the Android app does not make a Home installation eligible to act as the host. It is simply another supported client route to a qualifying Pro computer.
Choose the client route that fits your device
The client choice is primarily about the device you already have, not about buying a special Remote Desktop computer. A Windows laptop uses the built-in Remote Desktop Connection search result. A Mac, iPhone, or iPad uses Windows App. An Android device uses the Remote Desktop app. In every case, the host preparation is identical: Pro edition, Remote Desktop enabled, exact PC name, and credentials for sign-in.
This means you can switch from a Windows client to a phone without reconfiguring the host. Conversely, changing client platforms cannot solve a host-edition problem. If the host is Home, none of the three client routes changes that eligibility requirement.
If the computer says Windows Home
If Edition shows Home on the computer you want to access, stop the Remote Desktop host procedure at that point. Microsoft identifies Remote Desktop as a Pro feature and describes upgrading an activated Windows 11 Home device to Pro through the Microsoft Store.
Home-host decision path
- Confirm that Home is shown under Settings > System > About > Windows specifications > Edition.
- Decide whether this is the computer that must accept incoming Remote Desktop connections. If it is only the client, no edition change is needed for this purpose.
- If it is the host, follow Microsoft’s Windows Home-to-Pro upgrade route through Microsoft Store.
- After the edition change completes, return to the host setup: open Settings > System > Remote Desktop, enable the feature, confirm it, and record the PC name.
The Microsoft guidance does not establish a general license price, a third-party seller, or a particular promotion, so treat any amount shown in the Store as the current offer for your account and region rather than as a permanent universal price.
Do not upgrade the wrong device
If the Home computer is only the client, upgrading it is not required for this workflow. The upgrade question applies to the computer that must accept the incoming connection. Identify that machine first, then check its edition. This avoids paying for an edition change on a device that was already eligible to connect as a client.
Troubleshoot the documented setup path
Start with the symptom that matches what you see. The checks below stay within the prerequisites established by Microsoft’s setup guidance.

The Remote Desktop page or control is not usable
- Check the host edition again. The computer accepting the connection must be Pro.
- Make sure you are changing settings on the intended host, not on the client device.
- Use the current path Settings > System > Remote Desktop rather than searching for an older Windows menu name.
The client cannot find the PC
- Reopen the host’s Remote Desktop page and copy the value shown under PC name.
- Verify that Remote Desktop was turned on and confirmed on that same host.
- Check that the host is the Pro computer you prepared, especially if several Windows PCs have similar names.
If those identity and setup checks are correct but the client still cannot reach the host, the basic guide has reached its boundary. It does not provide a complete procedure for diagnosing every network, firewall, router, or name-resolution condition.
The connection reaches sign-in but authentication does not complete
Review the account details you are entering and make sure they are for the Windows host you intended to access. The documented flow requires signing in after you select Connect; enabling the feature alone does not bypass authentication. If an organization manages the computer, its account policies may require help from the administrator, but those policies are outside the setup steps covered here.
The app name looks different
Microsoft can update client branding and store listings. On Windows, look for Remote Desktop Connection. On macOS and iOS, the current guide names Windows App. On Android, it names the Remote Desktop app. If an updated interface uses different wording, locate the function to add or select a Windows PC and continue to use the host PC name.
You are trying to connect from outside the local network
Do not assume that switching on the Windows toggle makes a PC reachable from every internet connection. The reviewed setup guidance establishes the host edition, Windows setting, PC name, client apps, and sign-in flow; it does not establish router configuration, port exposure, VPN design, firewall hardening, or a complete security checklist for public-internet access. Treat remote access across networks as a separate networking and security project requiring current, authoritative instructions for your environment.

Choose the feature based on the situation:
- Remote Desktop: the ongoing access method described in this guide. You prepare a Windows Pro host, then connect from a supported client using its PC name and an account.
- Remote Assistance: a support session in which a trusted helper can take over or view a PC to help troubleshoot it.
Microsoft’s Remote Assistance guidance also warns users to allow a helper only when they initiated contact with Microsoft Support directly. That warning matters when someone unexpectedly asks you to install a remote-control tool or grant access: an unsolicited request is not the same thing as the Remote Desktop setup you intentionally configured.
Which one should you use?
Use Remote Desktop when you are intentionally preparing a Pro PC for access from another supported device. Use Remote Assistance when a trusted helper is assisting with a problem in a support session. They solve different problems, and an unexpected request for Remote Assistance should not be treated as proof that your Remote Desktop host is configured correctly.

The documented workflow has a short list of requirements:
- A Windows Pro edition on the computer that will be accessed.
- Remote Desktop enabled and confirmed in Windows Settings.
- The exact PC name displayed on the host’s Remote Desktop page.
- A supported client device and its corresponding Microsoft-documented app.
- Account details for the sign-in prompt.
It does not call for a special host model, a particular monitor, a new keyboard, or a dedicated networking product. The client can be a device you already own, and the documented steps do not establish a required Amazon product or accessory. If the host is Home, the relevant product path is Microsoft’s Windows Pro upgrade through Microsoft Store, not an unrelated peripheral purchase.

A complete pre-connection checklist
Use this list before opening the client app:
- The intended host is the computer you checked, not another device.
- The host’s edition is Windows Pro.
- Remote Desktop is enabled and confirmed at Settings > System > Remote Desktop.
- The host PC name has been recorded exactly from that page.
- You know which client platform you will use: Windows, macOS, iOS, or Android.
- You have the account details needed when the client prompts you to sign in.
- If the host is Home, you have not treated it as eligible; you have followed the Microsoft Store upgrade path or chosen a different Pro host.
With those conditions met, the platform-specific procedures are intentionally short: open the appropriate client, enter or add the host PC name, select Connect or the saved PC, and sign in.

After a successful connection
Once the client accepts the host name and the sign-in completes, you are working with the remote Windows installation rather than the client device’s local desktop. Keep track of which screen you are controlling, especially when both computers have similar files or account names. When you finish, close the Remote Desktop session using the normal disconnect or close action in the client; do not assume that closing a laptop lid or switching phones changes the host’s configuration.
If you later need to connect again from the same client, reuse the saved host entry where the app provides one, but verify that it still contains the correct PC name. If you replace the host computer or intentionally change its Windows installation, repeat the edition check, Remote Desktop enablement, and PC-name recording for the new host.

Does the Windows 11 client also need to be Pro?
