Query Monitor helps you find what is slowing a specific WordPress request. Reproduce the exact page, admin screen, AJAX call, REST request, or redirect that is misbehaving, then read its Timeline, database queries, HTTP API calls, PHP errors, hooks, templates, blocks, scripts, and styles. The plugin reports only the request currently being generated; it is not a historical performance dashboard.
Use the findings as investigation leads rather than proof that a plugin is inherently bad. Make one controlled change at a time on staging, reload the same request, compare the same measurements, and promote the fix only after functional testing.
What Query Monitor shows—and what it cannot show
Query Monitor instruments the WordPress request that is running while you inspect it. Its toolbar summary reports four values in order: page-generation time in seconds, peak memory usage, total SQL-query time in seconds, and total SQL-query count. Those numbers describe one load, not an average for your site and not a history of earlier requests.
That distinction determines the workflow. If visitors report that checkout is slow, open the checkout request while reproducing the same cart and login state. If the block editor is slow, inspect the editor request rather than the public home page. For an AJAX or REST problem, trigger that exact request and inspect Query Monitor while it is being handled.

- It is not an uptime or historical profiler: repeat the same request after each change if you need a before-and-after comparison.
Install Query Monitor and prepare a safe test
Current compatibility snapshot
At the captured WordPress.org listing on 20 June 2026, Query Monitor 4.0.7 had more than 200,000 active installations, required WordPress 6.2 or later and PHP 7.4 or later, and was tested through WordPress 7.0.7. These values change, so check the current listing before installing on an older site.
| Item | Value recorded on 20 June 2026 | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Query Monitor version | 4.0.7 | Version can change after this date |
| Minimum WordPress | 6.2 | Confirm the current plugin requirement |
| Minimum PHP | 7.4 | Confirm the current plugin requirement |
| Testing noted | Through WordPress 7.0.7 | Testing information is time-specific |
| Active installations | 200,000+ | WordPress.org count at capture time |
Install from an official distribution
- Install and activate Query Monitor from WordPress.org, its GitHub repository, or Composer.
- Use a staging clone whenever possible. Copy the relevant content and configuration, but remove production secrets and personal data from the test environment.
- Sign in as an Administrator on a single-site installation, or as a Super Admin on multisite. By default, those are the users who can see Query Monitor output.
- Record the exact URL or admin action, the logged-in user state, the browser action that starts the request, and whether the problem involves a normal page, AJAX, REST, cron-like work, or a redirect.
Do not enable broad access merely to make troubleshooting convenient. If you deliberately use Query Monitor’s authentication-cookie mechanism to let a logged-out or otherwise unauthorized user view output, remove or rotate that access as soon as testing ends.
Capture the request that is actually slow
Reproduce before opening panels
Open the exact problem page or perform the exact admin action while Query Monitor is active. A fresh request is essential: a different URL, user role, cache state, query string, cart, or editor document can execute different code. For an asynchronous failure, trigger the button, autosave, search, or background action that sends the AJAX or REST request rather than relying on the initial page load.
Establish a baseline
- Write down the request and its context, including user role, device or browser state, and whether a cache was bypassed.
- Reload or repeat the action enough to ensure that the behavior is reproducible, but keep the scenario identical for later comparisons.
- Open the Query Monitor menu in the WordPress admin toolbar while that request is displayed.
- Record page-generation time, peak memory, SQL time, and query count before changing code or deactivating anything.
Query Monitor does not retain a historical record for you. If you navigate away and then inspect the toolbar, you are looking at a different request.
Start with Timeline to locate where time goes
The Timeline is the fastest overview of a request. It lays out recorded events so you can see whether the delay is concentrated in database work, a remote HTTP request, PHP execution, or another phase of WordPress processing.

- A long database segment directs you to Queries and Queries by Component.
- A long remote-call segment directs you to HTTP API Calls, where response code, duration, timeout, URL, and caller are available.
- A request that spends time before output is generated may need PHP-error, hook, environment, or template inspection.
Timeline is a locator, not a replacement for the detailed panels. Use it to choose the next panel, then inspect the caller, component, and stack information before editing.
Find expensive SQL with Queries and Queries by Component
Read the individual query list
The Queries panel exposes total SQL time and count, query type, the SQL statement, its calling function, and notices for slow, duplicate, or erroneous queries. Sort or filter so that unusually long statements and repeated statements are visible. A query’s duration is the time observed during this request; it is not a permanent property of the SQL in every environment.
Use the aggregate component view
Queries by Component groups database work by WordPress core, the active theme, or a plugin. This aggregate view is useful when one extension issues many modest queries whose combined time is larger than any single statement.
| Finding | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| High total SQL time | Database work dominates this request | Inspect the longest statements, callers, indexes, arguments, and cache behavior |
| Many duplicate queries | The same data may be requested repeatedly | Identify the calling function and determine whether a persistent object cache or request-level reuse is appropriate |
| Many queries from one component | The component is a lead for code review | Reproduce with a controlled deactivation or minimal theme on staging |
| SQL errors | A query failed or was rejected | Follow the error, function, and request context before changing schema or code |
Do not label a plugin “the cause” solely because it appears at the top of this list. A theme can trigger a core query, a cache miss can magnify otherwise normal work, and another extension can alter the data being queried. Change one variable, repeat the identical request, and compare the same SQL totals.
Diagnose slow external services with HTTP API Calls
WordPress-side requests to remote services can add latency that browser timing does not make obvious. In HTTP API Calls, inspect the destination URL, response code, duration, timeout status, responsible component, and stack information.

- Find the call with a duration that aligns with the Timeline delay.
- Check whether it returned an error, a slow response, or a timeout.
- Follow the responsible plugin, theme, or function in the stack.
- Test the remote service separately using an appropriate staging or diagnostic method; do not paste authentication tokens or customer data into a public report.
- Fix the responsible code with sensible timeouts, error handling, and—where justified—retries. Do not conceal a failing service by merely hiding the Query Monitor panel.
Applications using Guzzle can add requests to Query Monitor through its documented middleware, allowing those calls to appear alongside the normal WordPress HTTP API diagnostics.
Trace PHP warnings, notices, and fatal errors
Open the PHP errors and “Doing it Wrong” panels after reproducing the failure. Query Monitor associates the message with a component and provides a stack trace that can reveal the file, hook, and calling path.
- Warning or notice: identify the component and the exact execution path, then determine whether the message is incidental or changes the output.
- Fatal error: capture the file and stack, reproduce with the same user and request context, and repair or roll back the responsible code on staging first.
- Doing it Wrong notice: treat it as a signal of an incorrect WordPress API usage or lifecycle assumption, not automatically as the performance root cause.
Sanitize stack traces and request details before sharing them. Never publish passwords, API keys, session cookies, payment data, or personally identifiable request parameters.
Inspect hooks, templates, blocks, scripts, and styles
Hooks and execution order
Use the hooks panel when behavior depends on an action or filter. The callback, component, and priority can show which code runs first, whether an expensive callback is attached repeatedly, or whether a later callback changes an earlier result.
Templates and blocks
For incorrect output, unexpected template selection, or slow rendering, inspect the template hierarchy and blocks recorded for the request. Compare the result with a minimal theme and an isolated plugin set on staging to determine whether the problem follows the theme, a block extension, or a content-specific path.

Scripts and styles
When the symptom is a missing asset, wrong enqueue order, excessive front-end payload, or a script that never executes, inspect the scripts and styles panels. Check dependencies, handles, placement, and the component that enqueued each asset. Query Monitor can explain how WordPress assembled the page; browser developer tools remain useful for the final network transfer and browser-side execution.
Check request context and the WordPress environment
Before changing code, open the request and environment diagnostics. Confirm rewrite and query variables, conditional flags, the selected template, active theme, user capability, PHP limits, object-cache state, and other values that distinguish the failing request from a working one.
Understand persistent object caching
Query Monitor can flag the absence of a persistent object cache. WordPress’s default object cache is non-persistent, so values normally disappear after the request; a persistent cache can reuse eligible results across page loads. Treat this as an infrastructure decision, not an automatic fix. Test cache invalidation, stale data, multisite behavior, and failure recovery before enabling or changing a cache in production.

Debug AJAX, REST, redirects, and background-like requests
Query Monitor’s diagnostics include request, redirect, REST, conditionals, transients, and Guzzle-related panels in addition to the core SQL and PHP views.
- Trigger the exact AJAX or REST operation while logged in with the same capability and nonce context as the affected user.
- Inspect the request panel to confirm the route, query variables, method, and authentication state.
- Use Queries, HTTP API Calls, and PHP errors for the server-side work performed by that operation.
- For a redirect, inspect the redirect chain and the callback that issued it; a fast first response can hide a slow second request.
- Repeat the operation after each isolated change. Do not infer that the normal page is fixed because its initial load became faster.
Turn findings into a controlled fix
Use isolation, not guesswork
- Copy the site to staging and preserve a rollback point.
- Choose one hypothesis—for example, a duplicate query from a named component or a timeout in a remote call.
- Change only the relevant plugin setting, code path, theme, or cache condition.
- Run the same request with the same user state and inputs.
- Compare page-generation time, peak memory, SQL time, query count, Timeline shape, and functional output.
- Repeat under representative cache and content conditions, then promote only after regression checks.
A component that disappears when deactivated is a useful lead, but deactivation can also remove hooks, data, or dependencies that the real site needs. Prefer a minimal plugin set, a minimal theme, or a temporary feature flag on staging, and keep a documented rollback.

Access control, privacy, and performance overhead
Limit who can see diagnostics
On single-site installations, Query Monitor output is shown to Administrators by default; on multisite, Super Admins have access by default. An authentication cookie can extend access to a logged-out or otherwise unauthorized user. Use that feature only for a deliberate diagnostic session, protect the cookie, and remove or rotate it afterward because panels can expose URLs, SQL, file paths, stack traces, and request data.
Expect a small but real cost
The Query Monitor FAQ describes its impact on page generation as small, while noting that memory use can increase on requests containing hundreds of database queries. Measure the site in its normal configuration after troubleshooting rather than treating a diagnostic capture as a production benchmark.

Use verbose WordPress debugging off production
WordPress’s Advanced Administration Handbook says that WP_DEBUG and the other debugging tools are intended for local testing and staging, not live sites. SAVEQUERIES stores each query with timing and caller information and has a performance cost. If you enable it while diagnosing, turn it off when the investigation ends; likewise disable or limit Query Monitor collection for long-running operations once you no longer need the data.
Common symptoms and the fastest panel to open
| Symptom | First panel | Follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| Page generation is slow | Timeline | Queries by Component, then HTTP API Calls or PHP errors according to the longest segment |
| One plugin appears to create many queries | Queries by Component | Individual SQL, duplicate notices, caller stack, and a controlled staging test |
| Checkout or an editor action hangs | Capture the exact AJAX or REST request, then Timeline | HTTP API Calls, PHP errors, request context, and capability state |
| Remote integration times out | HTTP API Calls | Response code, duration, timeout, URL, component, stack, and remote-service test |
| PHP warning or fatal appears | PHP errors | Component, file, stack, hook path, and same-user reproduction |
| Layout, block, or asset is wrong | Templates/Blocks or Scripts/Styles | Hooks, dependencies, minimal theme, and isolated plugin set |
| Pages repeatedly rebuild the same data | Queries | Object-cache status, invalidation behavior, and query arguments |
Where Query Monitor fits with other diagnostics
Query Monitor is strongest when you need WordPress-specific attribution during one request. Other tools answer different questions.
| Tool or approach | Best question it answers | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Query Monitor | Which WordPress component, function, query, hook, template, or HTTP call ran during this request? | No historical production aggregation; diagnostic overhead and sensitive output require access control |
| Browser developer tools | What happened in the browser network waterfall, rendering pipeline, and JavaScript console? | Cannot by itself attribute server-side SQL or PHP work to a WordPress component |
| Host dashboard | Are CPU, memory, storage, database, or network resources constrained over time? | Usually lacks the WordPress-level caller and hook context |
| Application performance monitoring | What are the trends and traces across many users and requests? | May require separate instrumentation and may not expose every WordPress-specific panel |
| Debug Bar or similar developer plugins | Can a narrower set of request diagnostics be displayed? | Coverage, attribution, and request types differ; compare the actual panels you need |
Use the combination that matches the question: Query Monitor for a reproducible WordPress request, browser tools for client-side behavior, infrastructure dashboards for resource trends, and production monitoring for aggregate history.
Quick Recap
A repeatable end-to-end checklist
- Reproduce the exact failing request and record its user, URL, route, and cache state.
- Open Timeline and note where the request spends time.
- Inspect SQL totals, duplicate or error notices, and Queries by Component.
- Inspect HTTP API Calls for remote duration, status, timeout, caller, and stack.
- Read PHP errors and “Doing it Wrong” messages with their component and stack context.
- Use hooks, templates, blocks, scripts, and styles when the symptom is execution order, rendering, or assets.
- Confirm request variables, capabilities, PHP limits, theme, and object-cache state.
- Test one change at a time on staging and repeat the identical request.
- Check both performance measurements and functional behavior before promotion.
- Remove temporary authentication access, disable SAVEQUERIES, and stop unnecessary collection when the investigation is complete.
