A proof assistant verifies a mathematical argument by checking a formal proof of a precisely stated proposition. In Lean 4, you write the definitions, assumptions, theorem statement and proof in a project; Lean’s kernel checks the resulting proof term. The essential caveat is that a successful check certifies the formal statement and proof under Lean’s foundations—it does not, by itself, establish that you translated your intended informal theorem correctly.
What a proof assistant verifies
A proof assistant is software for expressing mathematical propositions and constructing proofs in a formal language. It can check whether a proposed proof follows from the stated assumptions and the system’s logical foundations. That is a narrower and more precise task than asking software whether an informal argument “looks right.”
In Lean, a theorem is a goal expressed as a proposition. The proof is a term that inhabits the proposition’s type: informally, Lean checks that the constructed object is evidence for the stated claim. The system’s basic introduction to Lean develops this proposition-and-proof perspective.
This changes what you need to supply. A sentence such as “every continuous function on a compact interval attains a maximum” relies on conventions about the function, interval, continuity, and domain. A formal theorem must name the relevant objects and state the hypotheses and conclusion in terms Lean can interpret. The assistant checks that formal expression, not the unstated intentions behind the sentence.

Formal verification is useful when a result is intricate, a proof is reused by other work, or a project needs a checkable record of its mathematical dependencies. It also makes hidden assumptions and definitions visible. It does not make the translation from ordinary mathematics automatic: deciding what the claim means and encoding it accurately are mathematical work.
What “verified” means—and what it does not
Lean’s tactics and interactive editor feedback help you develop a proof, but they are not the final authority. Tactics construct an explicit proof term in Lean’s foundational logic; a small trusted kernel checks that term. The Lean FAQ describes this verification path and the trust placed in the checker. The practical benefit is that a proof can be developed with higher-level tools while the final acceptance condition remains a check by the kernel.
A successful check therefore supports a specific conclusion: the formal proof term is accepted for the formal proposition, given the system’s foundations and trusted checker. It is not a blanket guarantee that every part of the surrounding software is flawless, that an imported result is suitable for your purpose, or that the formal proposition is the theorem you meant to prove. Lean’s FAQ also discusses independent checking, but a reader should still be clear about which checker and foundations their assurance relies on.

There are two separate questions to answer:
- Proof validity: Does Lean accept a proof of the proposition as written?
- Statement fidelity: Does that proposition faithfully express the intended mathematical claim, including its definitions and assumptions?
The second question cannot be settled by a green check mark alone. The Lean community’s “Did You Prove It?” guidance emphasizes having an expert confirm both that the statement corresponds to the claimed mathematics and that it has been proved.

| Mathematics in Lean | Readers whose goal is to formalize mathematics interactively | Mathematical formalization using Lean and Mathlib. Its introduction guides readers through setup and the tutorial project. |
| Theorem Proving in Lean | Readers who want a foundation in Lean’s logical framework and syntax | The theorem-proving foundations and language concepts that support writing Lean proofs. |
| Natural Number Game | Beginners who want an interactive introduction | A beginner-oriented way to meet Lean’s theorem-proving approach, recommended by the Lean learning page. |
Mathematics in Lean is especially appropriate if your question is how to formalize an ordinary mathematical argument rather than how to study the language in isolation. Its introduction identifies the version as v4.19.0; because tutorial materials and software versions can change, consult the current project instructions rather than assuming an older setup remains current.
Set up a Lean project you can check again
For a first formalization, follow the installation and editor instructions linked from the introduction to Mathematics in Lean. That tutorial’s path uses Lean 4 and Visual Studio Code, then has you open the tutorial project and work with its chapter files and exercises. Keeping your theorem statements and proofs in project files makes them available for checking again, rather than leaving them only in a transient editor session.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Install Lean 4 and Visual Studio Code using the tutorial’s current instructions. Use the setup path documented by the tutorial rather than relying on remembered commands or an unrelated version guide.
- Open the Mathematics in Lean project. Begin in the project and chapter files the tutorial provides, so that you are working within its intended setup.
- Run and inspect an example. Follow how the file states a result, presents a proof, and displays Lean’s feedback. Change one small part and observe which proposition or proof obligation the feedback concerns.
- Work through the relevant chapter and exercises. The examples build familiarity with syntax, goals, definitions, and using the library. Keep your own theorem in the project so it can be checked in the same context.
The exact installation steps and supported versions are subject to change. The tutorial is the appropriate source for current setup details; the available documentation identifies its own tutorial version, not a guarantee that every future Lean or editor release will use identical instructions.
Turn an informal claim into a formal statement
Before proving anything, decide exactly what the informal argument asserts. Separate the objects being discussed, the assumptions about them, and the desired conclusion. Then identify any terms whose meaning depends on definitions or conventions. For example, a phrase such as “large enough” or “regular” cannot remain implicit if the proof depends on a particular formal meaning.
Make the mathematical content explicit
- Name the objects. Determine what kind of things the theorem concerns—such as numbers, functions, sets, or structures—and specify their types and domains.
- State every hypothesis. Conditions that were obvious in prose may be necessary for the result. Include them explicitly rather than relying on the reader to infer them.
- Fix the definitions. Decide which definition of a key term is intended. A formal proof uses the definition and library results actually in scope, not a phrase’s informal range of meanings.
- Write the conclusion precisely. Express what must follow from the assumptions, and check that the result has the intended strength and scope.
This is not merely syntax conversion. If an informal theorem admits several readings, formalization forces a choice among them. The resulting theorem may be logically valid but weaker, stronger, or simply different from the intended claim if that choice is wrong.

Check the statement before investing in the proof
Read the formal proposition as if it were a standalone mathematical sentence. Ask whether every variable is constrained as intended, whether assumptions have been omitted or added, and whether the conclusion says exactly what the informal argument claims. This review is especially important when notation or definitions are imported from a library, since the names in a formal statement have specific meanings in that context.

For a new result, do not treat easy acceptance as evidence that the theorem is meaningful. A proposition can be proved because its assumptions are too strong, its conclusion is too weak, or a definition does not match the intended concept. The semantic review and the kernel check answer different questions.
Look for existing results before rebuilding them
Mathematical formalization often involves connecting your argument to definitions and lemmas that already exist. Mathematics in Lean teaches formalization on top of Mathlib, and the basics chapter describes tools for finding existing results. Search the library before recreating a definition or proving a familiar lemma from scratch.
A library result can save work, but using it still requires judgment. Verify that its assumptions fit your situation, that its conclusion is the one your argument needs, and that the formal definitions align with yours. If a theorem is stated in terms of a related but different concept, adapting it may require an additional argument rather than a simple substitution.
- Search for the central definition as well as likely lemma names; understanding the definition can reveal how the library organizes the subject.
- Compare the candidate result’s hypotheses with your theorem’s assumptions. A result requiring more assumptions may not apply; a result with a different conclusion may need an intermediate step.
- Keep the relationship between your informal argument and imported results visible. A proof that depends on a library theorem is still a valid formal derivation, but its mathematical dependencies matter to readers reviewing the claim.
Develop the proof from Lean’s feedback
Once the statement is clear and relevant library results are identified, build the proof interactively. Lean reports the current goal and whether the proof steps you have supplied fit. Use that feedback to break the argument into smaller obligations, then establish each obligation with definitions, earlier results, or appropriate tactics.

Tactics are a way to construct proof terms, not a substitute for the mathematical claim. A tactic may discharge routine reasoning or help transform a goal, but its success matters because the resulting term checks against the proposition. When a proof step fails, inspect the current goal and assumptions rather than changing the theorem statement reflexively. The mismatch may indicate a missing hypothesis, a mistaken definition, an inappropriate library result, or simply an incomplete proof step.
A useful development loop is:
- State one precise theorem. Keep the proposition small enough that you can tell what it requires.
- Inspect the goal and available assumptions. Confirm what Lean is asking you to prove at the current point.
- Connect the goal to definitions or known lemmas. Search for library support and check the candidate result’s conditions.
- Provide a proof step and inspect the new goals. Continue until every goal is discharged and Lean accepts the proof.
- Review the completed proof in context. Check that the theorem statement, imports, definitions, and dependencies still match the intended mathematics.
When proof construction becomes difficult, distinguish a hard proof from a bad formal statement. Revisit the statement and the assumptions before adding complexity. If the formalization is faithful and the library route is appropriate, then split the argument into smaller lemmas that capture genuine intermediate mathematical facts.
Review the result as both code and mathematics
A completed Lean file has two audiences: the checker that verifies the formal derivation and the mathematician who needs to understand what was established. Review it at both levels. The checker’s acceptance addresses formal validity; a human review addresses whether the proposition, definitions, assumptions, and imported results represent the claimed argument.
- Statement: Does the theorem encode the intended objects, scope, and conclusion?
- Assumptions: Are all hypotheses mathematically justified, and are any hidden conditions missing?
- Definitions: Do formal definitions capture the terms in the informal claim?
- Dependencies: Are the imported lemmas relevant and used under their stated conditions?
- Proof acceptance: Does the project check the proof term with the intended Lean setup?
The Lean community’s guidance on evaluating formalized claims is useful here: verification of the formal proof and correspondence between the formal statement and the claimed mathematics must both be considered.

How Lean compares with Rocq and Isabelle/HOL
There is no evidence here for a universal ranking of proof assistants by usability, library size, or suitability. The supported comparison is foundational: Lean and Rocq, formerly Coq, share much through dependent type theory while differing technically; Isabelle/HOL is based on higher-order logic and the LCF approach. The Lean FAQ discusses these distinctions.

| Lean | Dependent type theory | Whether Mathlib covers the target mathematics; available learning resources and editor workflow; project requirements. |
| Rocq (formerly Coq) | Shares much with Lean through dependent type theory, with technical differences | Whether its libraries, learning path, proof workflow, and community fit the specific project. |
| Isabelle/HOL | Higher-order logic and the LCF approach | Whether its foundations, libraries, tools, and project ecosystem fit the intended work. |
These are orientation points, not a feature ranking. To choose a system, examine the mathematics you need to formalize, the coverage and maintenance of its relevant libraries, the learning materials available to your team, and the project’s workflow requirements. Common failure modes and how to respond
Lean accepts a theorem that is not the intended result
Re-read the proposition in ordinary mathematical language. Look for assumptions that make the result trivial, an overly narrow domain, or a conclusion that omits part of the original claim. Ask a subject expert to review the statement-to-claim correspondence, especially if the theorem is being presented as a mathematical result beyond the code itself.
A library theorem does not apply
Compare the theorem’s hypotheses and conclusion with the goal you have. Check that the objects use the same definitions and that no needed condition is absent. Search for a result formulated for the relevant definition, or prove an intermediate lemma that connects the library result to your claim.
A tactic does not solve the goal
Inspect the goal and assumptions Lean currently displays. A tactic can only produce a proof of the formal obligation it receives; it cannot repair an incorrect statement or invent a missing mathematical hypothesis. Break the task into a smaller argument and use the feedback to identify the exact mismatch.
A tutorial’s setup instructions differ from your installation
Use the current instructions linked from the tutorial and check that you have opened its project as intended. Tutorial content and Lean versions change; the Mathematics in Lean introduction identifies its material as v4.19.0, so do not assume that setup directions for that release automatically describe every later environment.
