On Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra, start with selective activation rather than maximum protection all day. Go to Settings > Display > Privacy display, or open the Quick panel by swiping down from the upper-right edge and tap the Privacy display icon. In its conditions, choose supported apps, supported credential-entry screens, and notification pop-ups. This keeps ordinary reading, photos, video, and browsing looking normal, while adding side-angle protection when the risk is real. Maximum Privacy is stronger but can make the image look washed out or less clear.
What Privacy display does
Privacy display uses the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s display hardware to reduce what people beside you can see. The effect is aimed at side angles, such as a neighboring seat on a train, a queue behind you, or someone standing next to you while you enter a password. It is not a black-out screen and it is not a guarantee that sensitive information disappears from every angle.
Samsung’s official caveat is precise: “When activated, some information may still be visible to others depending on the viewing environment, such as angle or brightness.” Treat the feature as a way to reduce casual shoulder-surfing, not as a substitute for turning the phone away, lowering the screen, or avoiding sensitive work in a crowded place.
Compatibility and changing menu labels
Samsung support documentation identifies Privacy display as a feature supported only on the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Do not expect the same switch on another Galaxy model merely because it has a recent version of Android or a high-resolution screen.

Samsung also notes that names, menu paths, and layouts can vary with the phone model, software version, and app version. The steps below use the labels documented for the S26 Ultra. If a label is slightly different on your updated phone, look for “Privacy display” under Display rather than assuming the feature has been removed.
Turn Privacy display on
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Tap the Privacy display switch.
For a faster, temporary change, swipe down from the upper-right edge of the screen to open the Quick panel, then tap the Privacy display icon. To reach its detailed controls from that panel, tap the Privacy display text area rather than only the on/off icon.
Use the Settings route when you are configuring conditions for the first time. Use Quick panel when a situation changes suddenly—for example, when you begin entering a banking PIN in a public place and want protection immediately.
Set conditions so protection appears only when needed
Open the Privacy display settings and find Conditions for turning on. Samsung lists three useful trigger types. Configure one or more of them instead of leaving the strongest effect active during every task.
Selected supported apps
Choose apps from the supported-app list when you want Privacy display to activate in particular contexts. Samsung says the list is limited to supported apps, such as certain financial apps; it is not a universal switch that can be assigned to every app installed on the phone.
This is the most natural option for a readability-first setup. Your banking or payment app can receive extra side-angle protection while the home screen, web pages, books, maps, and ordinary messaging remain in the normal display mode. If an app does not appear in the list, the app-specific condition cannot be used for it.

PIN, pattern, and password entry
Samsung’s credential condition covers credential entry in Samsung or Google settings, the lock screen, and Secure Folder. It does not cover credential screens inside third-party apps. A password prompt shown by an unrelated service therefore may not trigger this condition, even if the prompt looks similar to the lock screen.
Recommended Free Tools
Enable this condition if you frequently unlock the phone or open Secure Folder around other people. For a third-party app login, use the Quick panel switch manually and keep the display angled away from bystanders.
Notification pop-ups
The notification condition protects the notification pop-up area, not the entire screen. That distinction matters: it is designed to limit what is exposed when a message or alert appears over another task, rather than to conceal every pixel of the phone whenever a notification arrives.
It is a sensible compromise for people who receive private message previews but do not want the lower brightness or altered appearance of continuous protection. You still need to review which apps are allowed to show previews in the first place; Privacy display reduces side visibility but does not change the underlying notification permissions.
Selective activation or maximum protection?
There is no universally correct setting. The choice is a trade-off between how much you need to hide from a side viewer and how close you want the owner’s view to remain to the ordinary display.
| Approach | Side-angle protection | Front-on readability | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Selective conditions | Applied during supported apps, supported credential entry, or notification pop-ups | Normal display remains available for activities outside those conditions | Everyday use when privacy matters only in specific moments |
| Continuous or Maximum Privacy | Stronger protection while the mode is active | May look dimmer, lower-contrast, washed out, or less sharp depending on content, settings, and observer | Short, high-risk situations when a nearby viewer is an immediate concern |
For most owners, selective conditions are the best starting point. Switch to broader or maximum protection for a crowded commute, a confidential document, or a password entry with someone close beside you, then return to normal viewing when the situation ends.

A readability-first setup that works in practice
- Enable the feature in Settings. Use Settings > Display > Privacy display so you can configure it rather than merely toggling it.
- Turn on the conditions you actually need. Start with supported financial or work apps, credential entry, and notification pop-ups. Do not select every available condition simply because it exists.
- Test each trigger in a normal room. Open a selected app, lock and unlock the phone, and wait for a notification pop-up. Confirm that Privacy display appears when expected and that ordinary apps still look normal outside the configured conditions.
- Check the owner’s view before relying on it. Read small text, inspect a photograph, and view a page with dark and light areas. If the mode makes your routine work uncomfortable, remove the broadest trigger and keep the protection for the highest-risk context.
- Use Quick panel for one-off events. If an unsupported app presents a sensitive screen, manually tap the Privacy display icon before entering information. Turn it off again when you finish so the rest of your session is not unnecessarily affected.
- Keep physical precautions for high sensitivity. Shield the screen with your hand, turn your body, or move to a private location when exposing account numbers, recovery codes, health information, or other details where even limited side visibility would be unacceptable.
What the screen may look like when protection is stronger
Privacy display is most noticeable when you are the person looking straight at the screen. The normal mode is intended to preserve the ordinary viewing experience, while stronger settings can change perceived brightness, contrast, and clarity. The result depends on the selected mode, the content on screen, display settings, ambient light, and the individual viewer.
In a WIRED hands-on review, Julian Chokkattu reported that text remained readable straight on and wrote, “I haven’t seen any fuzzy text, and brightness hasn’t been a problem for me either.” His assessment was made after setting the phone to Quad HD+ resolution and Vivid color mode. It is one reviewer’s experience under those settings, not a promise that every S26 Ultra will look equally comfortable.
Android Central reviewer Nicholas Sutrich described selected-app, credential, and notification triggers as the least intrusive approach. He assessed continuous use as reducing brightness and resolution because the feature turns off half the pixels. That is the reviewer’s interpretation of the display behavior, not a Samsung specification; use it to understand why maximum protection may be more distracting during long reading sessions.

What laboratory testing found
LTT Labs compared SDR images at 0°, 30°, and 60° off-axis with brightness maximized and auto-brightness disabled. Its luminance measurements used a Konica Minolta LS-150 under low, nonzero ambient light. In Maximum Privacy mode, the lab measured roughly 15–20 nits in dark display regions. Those dark areas looked washed out even when viewed head-on.
The 15–20-nit figure applies to the dark regions in that test sample and those stated conditions; it is not a whole-screen brightness rating and should not be treated as a standard result for every image, room, or phone. Bright scenes, different content, another viewing angle, or different display settings can produce a different impression.
The combined evidence supports a practical rule: stronger privacy can impose a visible image-quality cost, but the size of that cost is not identical for every user. Test the mode with the type of content you read most often instead of judging it from a single photograph or a brief glance.

How to choose settings for common situations
Reading, browsing, and video at home
Leave Privacy display inactive unless someone nearby has a reason to see the screen. These activities usually benefit most from the phone’s ordinary brightness, contrast, and resolution. If a visitor is sitting close enough to read over your shoulder, use Quick panel temporarily rather than accepting a changed image for the entire evening.
Banking and payments in public
If the financial app is listed as supported, add it under the app condition. If it is not listed, manually activate Privacy display before entering an account number, one-time code, or payment PIN. Look straight at the screen and still cover it from a direct line of sight; the feature reduces side visibility but does not make the information invisible.
Unlocking the phone or opening Secure Folder
Enable the credential-entry condition. Samsung identifies the lock screen, Samsung or Google settings, and Secure Folder as covered contexts. This is different from a login form inside a third-party app, which is outside the documented credential coverage.
Receiving private messages
Use the notification-pop-up condition if message previews are your main concern. Remember that it applies to the pop-up area. Someone who can already see the rest of your screen may still see other content, so avoid opening a private conversation where a complete screen view would be a problem.
Travel and other crowded spaces
Use a supported-app or notification trigger for routine travel, then enable broader protection from Quick panel for a short period when you must work with confidential material. Maximum Privacy is most defensible as a temporary measure when a nearby viewer is actively positioned to read the display, not as a permanent setting chosen without testing.

Important limits and security expectations
- It limits side-angle visibility; it does not guarantee invisibility. Brightness, viewing angle, reflections, and the surrounding environment affect what another person can still see.
- It is not a physical privacy filter. The protection is built into the S26 Ultra’s display behavior and can be enabled or disabled; it does not replace careful screen positioning.
- Credential coverage has boundaries. Samsung and Google settings, the lock screen, and Secure Folder are documented contexts. Third-party app credential screens are not included in that condition.
- App support is selective. Only apps Samsung exposes in the supported list can be assigned to the app trigger.
- Notification protection is localized. It addresses the notification pop-up area rather than every element on the display.
- Image changes can occur outside the side viewing angle. Samsung warns that some image-quality changes may be visible even to the owner looking straight on.
Troubleshooting Privacy display
The Privacy display switch is missing
First confirm that the phone is a Galaxy S26 Ultra. Samsung documents the feature for that model only. If the model is correct, open Settings and search for “Privacy display,” then check whether a software update has changed the Display menu wording. Menu names and layouts can vary by software version.

The Quick panel icon is not visible
Use Settings > Display > Privacy display as the reliable fallback. Quick panel contents and arrangement can vary, so the absence of an immediately visible tile does not by itself show that the feature is unavailable.
An app cannot be added to the conditions list
The app may not be supported by Samsung’s app condition. Use the manual Quick panel switch for a sensitive session, and do not assume that a third-party app’s password page will be protected by the credential-entry condition.
The screen looks washed out or uncomfortable
Check whether Maximum Privacy or another broad trigger is active. Return to selective conditions and compare the same text, image, or video in normal mode. If you need strong protection only briefly, enable it for the sensitive task and disable it afterward. The LTT Labs result shows why dark regions can appear especially washed out in Maximum Privacy, but your own content and environment may look different.

This is consistent with Samsung’s warning. Increase physical distance, change the phone’s angle, lower the display from the person’s line of sight, or move somewhere private. Do not rely on Privacy display alone for information that cannot be exposed at all.
A quick decision checklist
- Is the phone a Galaxy S26 Ultra? If not, Samsung does not document this feature for it.
- Do you need privacy only in certain apps or moments? Choose selective conditions.
- Do you mainly want to hide lock-screen, Secure Folder, or supported settings credentials? Enable credential entry.
- Are message previews the problem? Enable notification pop-ups, remembering that only the pop-up area is targeted.
- Is someone positioned close enough to read confidential content right now? Use Quick panel for broader or maximum protection, then test that you can still read what you need.
- Would disclosure be unacceptable even if only a few pixels remain visible? Shield the phone or stop the task; Privacy display is not an absolute blackout.
The practical rule
Configure Privacy display around the moments that create risk, not around every minute you own the phone. Selective supported-app, credential, and notification conditions preserve the S26 Ultra’s normal readability for routine use. Reserve stronger or maximum protection for short, high-risk situations, and combine it with good screen positioning whenever the information must remain confidential.
