How to use PlayStation PULSE Explore earbuds with a phone or PC depends on the source device. Pair a phone through Bluetooth. For a compatible Windows PC or Mac, use the included PlayStation Link USB adapter, which is paired with the earbuds out of the box. If computer audio does not switch automatically, select “PlayStation Link Adapter” as the active output.
Choose the connection that matches your device
PULSE Explore has two relevant wireless paths, and they are not interchangeable in Sony’s documented setup instructions. A phone connects through Bluetooth. A compatible computer uses the included PlayStation Link USB adapter, which provides the computer’s PlayStation Link audio connection and supports the earbuds’ microphone functions.
| Source device | Connection | What you need | Where volume is controlled |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone | Bluetooth | A compatible Bluetooth phone and the charging case | On the phone |
| Windows PC | PlayStation Link | The included adapter and a USB Type-A port | With the earbud volume button |
| Mac | PlayStation Link | The included adapter and USB audio output through a USB Type-A port | With the earbud volume button |
| Phone and computer at the same time | PlayStation Link plus previously paired Bluetooth | Both connections established and available | Separate controls: earbud button for PlayStation Link, phone controls for Bluetooth |
This means the correct choice is determined by where you want sound to come from, not by a preference for one universal pairing mode. Use Bluetooth for mobile playback. Use the adapter for computer playback. If you need both sources available, establish each connection separately and remember that each source keeps its own volume control.

Sony warns that not all devices work with the earbuds. Compatibility depends on the phone, computer, operating system, USB implementation and Bluetooth implementation, so treat the steps below as the supported connection pattern rather than a guarantee for every model.

Before you start
- Keep both earbuds in their charging case when beginning either setup.
- For computer use, turn the computer on and locate a usable USB Type-A port before inserting the adapter.
- For phone use, open the phone’s Bluetooth settings so you can see nearby devices.
- If you plan to use the Windows configuration software, install the PlayStation Link PC Driver from Sony’s support site. Sony says it can update the earbuds and adapter and expose audio and microphone controls without connecting to a console.
The case is important during initial pairing. The phone procedure uses the case’s PS Link button, and the computer procedure starts with both earbuds docked before the adapter is inserted. Beginning in that state makes it easier to read the indicator and follow the intended sequence.
Connect PULSE Explore to a phone over Bluetooth
The phone pairing process is performed with the button on the charging case. You do not use the PlayStation Link USB adapter for this connection.
- Open Bluetooth in the phone’s settings and leave the device-discovery screen visible.
- Place both earbuds in the charging case.
- Press and hold the case’s PS Link button. Release it when the case indicator quickly flashes blue; Sony specifies approximately eight seconds.
- On the phone, choose PULSE Explore from the available Bluetooth devices.
- Wait for the case indicator to turn solid blue. That indicates that pairing and the Bluetooth connection are complete.
After the solid-blue indication appears, keep the phone’s Bluetooth connection active while listening. Bluetooth volume is adjusted from the phone, not from the earbud volume control. This remains true even if the earbuds are also connected to a PlayStation Link source.
If the phone does not find the earbuds
The earbuds search for a connection for about 30 seconds. If no connection is available during that period, they turn off. Start the process again by holding the case’s PS Link button for approximately eight seconds until the indicator rapidly flashes blue, then select PULSE Explore again in the phone’s Bluetooth menu.
Keep the case close to the phone while pairing and make sure both earbuds remain docked. If the phone lists an old or incomplete PULSE Explore entry, use the phone’s Bluetooth controls to remove that entry before trying the eight-second pairing procedure again. The exact menu wording for removing a saved device varies by phone, but the important sequence is the same: remove the stale entry, return to discovery, put the case back into rapid-blue pairing mode and select the product name.
A rapid blue flash is the pairing-mode signal; a solid blue indicator means the phone connection has completed. If the indicator is not in either state, do not select an unrelated entry in the phone’s list. Repeat the case-button procedure and begin the search within the approximately 30-second window.
Connect PULSE Explore to a Windows PC or Mac
Sony’s computer instructions use the included PlayStation Link USB adapter. The adapter is already paired to the earbuds when supplied, so ordinary PC or Mac setup does not require buying another adapter or repeating a Bluetooth pairing process.

- 【For PS5 Users Only】 Specifically designed for PS5 to connect Bluetooth headphones (e.g., AirPods, Bose, & more) for audio playback. For optimal voice chat experience, please use the PS5 controller microphone instead of headphone mics.
- 【Premium Sound, Low Latency】 Enjoy immersive, low-latency audio with aptX-Adaptive, aptX-HD & aptX-Low Latency. Achieve clear, dynamic audio for gaming and movies with compatible headphones (e.g., Bose QuietComfort Ultra). Note: Only aptX-Adaptive or aptX-Low Latency-enabled headphones support low-latency audio. (e.g., AirPods, Bose QC45 or QC35 do not support aptX-Adaptive and may experience audio delay.)
- 【Limited Mic Support】 Due to Bluetooth bandwidth limits, microphone input will not work with Bluetooth headphones. Please use the PS5 controller mic for clear voice communication. Manual settings required: PS5 Settings > Sound > Microphone > Input Device: Microphone on Controller.
- 【NOT FOR 2.4GHz Gaming Headsets & Other Devices】 Not compatible with Xbox, PS Portal, keyboards, mice, controllers, PS5 Pulse 3D Headset, or 2.4GHz wireless gaming headsets. Also, cannot be plugged into TVs, car systems, projectors, or printers.
- 【Easy Setup & Reliable Connection】 Plug the USB-C dongle into your PS5 and set audio output to “C81-G” once. The adapter auto-reconnects for convenience, but manual microphone setup must be performed for voice chat.
- Turn on the Windows PC or Mac.
- Confirm that both earbuds are docked in the charging case.
- Insert the included PlayStation Link USB adapter into a USB Type-A port on the computer.
- Remove both earbuds from the case. Because the adapter is paired out of the box, the earbuds should connect to it without a separate pairing procedure.
- Watch the adapter’s status indicator. Sony says it turns solid white when the connection is established.
- Play audio. If the computer continues using its speakers or another headset, open the operating system’s sound-output controls and select PlayStation Link Adapter as the active audio device.
The order matters: dock both earbuds before inserting the adapter, then remove both earbuds after insertion. The solid-white adapter indicator is the visual confirmation Sony gives for a completed connection. A computer can recognize the adapter while still routing sound elsewhere, so recognition alone is not proof that the earbuds are the active output.
Windows audio and microphone settings
On Windows, the PlayStation Link PC Driver provides a second layer of control. Sony says the driver can update both the earbuds and the adapter, adjust audio settings without a console connection, and provide audio and microphone options from its quick menu.
The driver is useful when the basic connection is present but you need to inspect settings, apply an available update or choose microphone controls. It is not a replacement for selecting the correct Windows output device: if Windows is still set to speakers or another headset, choose PlayStation Link Adapter in the system sound controls first.
If sound is audible but calls or recordings use the wrong microphone, open the driver’s quick menu and check the microphone settings. Both earbuds contain microphones. When both are connected through PlayStation Link, Sony specifies that the left earbud’s mic is enabled.
Mac considerations
The Mac must provide USB audio output through the port used by the adapter. After insertion, choose PlayStation Link Adapter in the Mac’s sound-output settings if automatic routing does not occur. Sony describes the supported computer category as compatible Windows PCs and Macs with USB audio output; it does not publish a complete compatibility matrix for every Mac model, port arrangement or adapter configuration.
Do not treat the Mac instructions as a Bluetooth-only alternative to the adapter. The documented computer path is the included PlayStation Link adapter. Whether a particular Mac, port arrangement or USB implementation works still depends on compatibility.
Use a phone and computer at the same time
After the earbuds have been paired with PlayStation Link, they can also search for a previously paired Bluetooth device that is available to connect. This allows a computer to remain the PlayStation Link source while a phone supplies Bluetooth audio.

- Complete the computer connection through the included PlayStation Link adapter.
- Pair the phone by following the Bluetooth procedure, if it has not already been paired.
- Keep Bluetooth enabled on the phone and make it available for reconnection.
- With both sources connected, start audio on the computer and phone as needed.
This is a two-source arrangement, not two identical controls. The earbuds can receive audio from PlayStation Link and Bluetooth at the same time, but the controls remain divided by source.
When both connections are active, the sources have separate volume behavior. The volume button on the earbuds changes PlayStation Link audio only. Bluetooth audio volume must be changed on the phone. Raising or lowering the earbud volume therefore will not change the phone’s Bluetooth level, and changing the phone’s volume will not change the PlayStation Link level.
Fix the most common connection problems
The phone never shows “PULSE Explore”
- Confirm that both earbuds are in the case.
- Hold the case’s PS Link button for approximately eight seconds and wait for a rapid blue flash before searching.
- Start the phone search promptly; the connection search lasts about 30 seconds.
- If a previous saved entry is causing confusion, remove the old PULSE Explore entry in the phone’s Bluetooth settings and repeat pairing.
- Consider compatibility: Sony explicitly says that not all devices work with the earbuds.
The case indicator is not flashing blue
The blue flashing state is the phone-pairing signal. Release the PS Link button only after the indicator changes to that rapid blue pattern. If the earbuds have already timed out, repeat the approximately eight-second hold to enter pairing mode again. A solid blue light indicates a completed Bluetooth connection, so it is not the state to wait for before beginning a new search.
The computer sees the adapter but produces no sound
- Check that the adapter is inserted into a USB Type-A port and that both earbuds were removed from the case after insertion.
- Look for a solid-white adapter indicator, which Sony identifies as the connected state.
- Open the computer’s sound-output selector and explicitly choose PlayStation Link Adapter.
- On Windows, open the PlayStation Link PC Driver and review its audio settings and quick-menu controls.
Do not assume that a connected adapter automatically becomes the active output. Computers can keep their built-in speakers or another headset selected even when PlayStation Link is connected. If the computer has no suitable USB audio path or is not a compatible device, the documented steps cannot guarantee a connection.
The microphone is wrong or unavailable on Windows
Verify that the computer is using the PlayStation Link input, not a built-in microphone or another headset. In the PlayStation Link PC Driver, use the quick menu to inspect microphone settings. With both earbuds connected through PlayStation Link, the left earbud is the microphone Sony specifies as enabled. Both earbuds have microphones, but Sony identifies the left one as the enabled microphone in this two-earbud PlayStation Link arrangement.
One source is audible while the other is silent
First identify which source is silent. The earbud volume button affects PlayStation Link only, so a Bluetooth stream may be muted or set too low on the phone even when the computer’s level is correct. Conversely, changing the phone’s volume does not adjust the PlayStation Link level. Check each source with its own control before changing the connection.
The adapter does not connect on a particular computer
Confirm that the computer has USB audio output and that the port is a USB Type-A connection suitable for the included adapter. Sony does not promise compatibility with every computer, operating-system version, USB hub or Bluetooth implementation. If the computer is outside the compatible-device category, the documented setup steps cannot guarantee a connection. The support guidance does not provide a complete model-by-model compatibility matrix, so check the specific device rather than assuming that every USB port or operating-system version behaves identically.

Do you need another PlayStation Link USB adapter?
No—not for the normal first PC or Mac connection. The adapter included with PULSE Explore is paired to the earbuds out of the box and is Sony’s standard computer setup path.
Sony also documents a separately purchased PlayStation Link USB Adapter, model CFI-ZWA3. Its purpose is narrower: it can create an additional PlayStation Link connection to a USB audio device without unplugging the first adapter. That is an optional second-connection accessory, not a prerequisite for connecting the earbuds to one computer. It may be relevant when you want another USB audio source available without physically moving the first adapter, but it does not replace the included adapter for ordinary setup. Availability and listing details vary, so verify the product and regional support before purchasing.

Phone versus PC: which setup should you use?
| Situation | Recommended path | Important check |
|---|---|---|
| You want music or calls from a phone | Bluetooth pairing from the phone’s settings | Enter pairing mode with the case button and select PULSE Explore |
| You want audio from a Windows PC | Included PlayStation Link USB adapter | Select PlayStation Link Adapter if Windows does not route audio automatically |
| You want audio from a Mac | Included PlayStation Link USB adapter | The Mac must provide USB audio output through a USB Type-A connection |
| You want computer audio and phone audio available together | PlayStation Link plus an available previously paired Bluetooth phone | Use the earbud button for PlayStation Link volume and the phone for Bluetooth volume |
| You need a second PlayStation Link connection | Consider the optional CFI-ZWA3 adapter | It is an additional accessory, not part of the standard single-computer setup |
What the setup does—and does not—guarantee
The procedures above follow Sony’s documented connection methods, but they do not establish universal compatibility. Sony’s own guidance says, “Not all devices work with your earbuds.” There is no complete device matrix in the cited support material, so compatibility should be verified for the specific phone, PC, Mac, operating-system version and USB configuration you intend to use.
For a phone, the deciding factors are a compatible Bluetooth implementation and the phone’s own audio controls. For a computer, the deciding factors are USB audio support, a suitable Type-A port, correct selection of the PlayStation Link Adapter and, on Windows, whether the PC Driver recognizes the earbuds and adapter. If both sources are needed, confirm that the phone was previously paired and is available for Bluetooth reconnection.
