Use several controls together rather than relying on one switch. Turn on YouTube Restricted Mode or, preferably, a supervised kid account; set Google SafeSearch to Filter; block gambling-related apps and websites on Android or Apple devices; restrict app-store ratings and purchases; and repeat the setup on every device and browser your child uses. These measures reduce exposure, but no automated filter can guarantee that every gambling video, advertisement, article, or app will disappear.
What parental controls can and cannot block
Gambling content is spread across many surfaces: YouTube videos, search results, sports coverage, news stories, display advertising, social posts, websites, games with gambling-like mechanics, and dedicated betting apps. A control that works on one surface may have no effect on another. YouTube Restricted Mode, for example, screens potentially adult videos; it is not a gambling-specific blocklist. A browser filter may block a betting website while leaving an installed app or an advertisement inside another app untouched.
The practical approach is layered protection. Match each setting to the place where your child could encounter gambling material:

- Web browsing: Android web-content filters or Apple website restrictions.
- Apps: Block individual betting, casino, lottery, or sports-wagering apps and prevent new downloads.
- Purchases: Require approval for app and in-app purchases.
- Accounts and devices: Use account supervision where available and configure every phone, tablet, computer, browser, and game console the child uses.
Filters are strongest when a parent keeps the PIN or passcode private, uses a separate parent account, and checks settings after operating-system or app updates. The Federal Trade Commission advises that controls work best when they are set up on all devices a child uses.

How to hide gambling videos on YouTube
Turn on Restricted Mode for a quick screen
YouTube describes Restricted Mode as an optional setting that helps screen potentially adult content you may not want users of the device to see. It can reduce the chance of encountering betting tutorials, casino footage, gambling promotion, and mature discussions, but it does not identify every gambling reference. A video may be classified as news, sport, commentary, or entertainment and still mention wagering. YouTube also says that no automated filtering system is perfect.
- Open YouTube on the device or browser the child uses.
- Open the account menu or profile menu.
- Choose Restricted Mode in the available settings.
- Switch Restricted Mode on.
- Repeat the change in each browser, app profile, smart-TV app, and other device where the child can watch YouTube. The setting is not automatically a universal lock for every account and device.
Restricted Mode is a screening layer, not an explicit deny list. It may also hide harmless educational material, so review the family’s needs before treating a blocked result as proof that it contains gambling.
Use a supervised kid account for stronger parent management
YouTube identifies supervised kid accounts as the best way for parents to manage a child’s digital journey with specific content settings and protections. A supervised account places content choices under the parent’s account rather than relying only on a local device toggle.

- Choose the available content setting that matches the child’s age and maturity. The available choices determine how broad the video catalog is.
- Review the account’s search, history, and recommendation controls so that unwanted viewing does not quickly influence the home feed.
- Use the parent account to revisit the setting when the child receives a new device or signs in to another YouTube app.
A supervised account is more consistent than asking a child to enable Restricted Mode, but it still cannot guarantee that every gambling mention or advertisement is removed. Use app, web, and purchase controls alongside it.
How to turn on Google SafeSearch
Choose Filter, not Blur
Google SafeSearch offers Filter, Blur, and Off. Choose Filter when the goal is to remove detected explicit results. Blur obscures images but may leave text links and snippets visible; Off provides no filtering.
- Open Google Search while signed in to the child’s account or on the child’s device.
- Open Search settings and find SafeSearch.
- Select Filter.
- Save the setting if Google presents a save button, then test a few ordinary searches to confirm the selected mode remains active.
SafeSearch is designed mainly for pornography and graphic violence. It should not be presented as a complete gambling filter. It can leave gambling-related news, sports analysis, advertisements, or other non-explicit pages in results.
Google notes that SafeSearch can be controlled by an account, device, network administrator, operating-system parental controls, or antivirus software. If the setting keeps changing, check which layer has authority: a school or family network, the child’s signed-in account, a device-level restriction, or another browser profile may be overriding the selection. Check every browser and search app, not just the default one.

Android: block gambling apps, websites, and downloads
Create a parent-controlled PIN
On current Android devices that expose the system parental-controls menu, open Settings > Parental controls. Create a PIN that the child does not know. The PIN protects changes to app, web, time, and content settings; giving it to the child defeats the control.
Android labels and availability can vary by device maker and software version. If Parental controls is not shown, use the device’s Settings search and look for “parental controls,” then verify that the controls apply to the child’s account and the browsers actually in use.
Block an installed app
- Open Settings > Parental controls.
- Choose App limits.
- Select the gambling, betting, casino, lottery, or wagering app.
- Turn off Allow app.
- Enter the parent PIN if requested and confirm that the app is no longer available to the child.
Blocking an app prevents access on that Android profile, but it does not necessarily block the same service through a browser. Block the corresponding website and check for alternate apps with similar names.
Filter web pages and explicit searches
- Open Settings > Parental controls.
- Choose Web content filters.
- Enable Block explicit sites and, where offered, Filter explicit search results.
- Test the child’s normal browser and any in-app browser used by games, social apps, or messaging services.
Google documents that these filters apply only to supported versions of Google, Chrome, and Android System WebView. Explicit content may still appear in other apps, on another device, or in a browser that does not use the supported filtering path. Because gambling is not always classified as explicit, add specific website blocks or approval-only browsing when the risk requires a narrower allowlist.

Use the app-store filter within Android parental controls to restrict new downloads by maturity rating. This reduces the chance that a child installs a betting or casino app, but it is not a complete gambling catalog. Age ratings can differ by developer and region, and the filter does not automatically remove every app that is already installed. Use App limits to block existing apps, and review the device after the child adds an account or updates the operating system.
Limit time and downtime when access itself is the risk
Android parental controls also provide daily limits, downtime, and app limits. These settings do not classify gambling content, but they can close the periods when unsupervised browsing or late-night use is most likely. Set them in the same Settings > Parental controls area, then keep the PIN private so the child cannot extend the schedule.
Use Family Link for multiple Android or ChromeOS devices
Account-level supervision is useful when a child has more than one Android or ChromeOS device. Google says Family Link can manage apps, websites, YouTube, Search, screen time, and purchases across a child’s supported devices.

- Set up the child’s supervised Google account under the parent’s account.
- Enroll each supported Android and ChromeOS device used by the child.
- Apply app approvals or blocks, web and Search choices, YouTube settings, time limits, and purchase approvals from the parent account.
- Check that each device is online and still associated with the supervised account after an operating-system reset, account change, or new browser installation.
Family Link improves consistency across enrolled devices, but it cannot control an un-enrolled phone, a guest profile, a different account, or an unsupported browser. Treat every new device or account as an additional setup task.

Set up Family Sharing and Screen Time
The Federal Trade Commission recommends Apple Family Sharing for managing controls on iPhone and iPad. Use the parent’s Family Sharing group to manage the child’s account, then configure Screen Time on the child’s device. Protect the changes with a Screen Time passcode that the child does not know.
Apple’s exact defaults and available features depend on the child’s age, country or region, and current operating-system version. If a label differs, use the Settings search field for “Screen Time,” “Content & Privacy Restrictions,” or “Web Content.”
Choose an appropriate Safari website policy
Apple provides three useful website choices:
- Approved Websites Only: the strongest option when the child needs access to a small, known set of sites. Add only the sites you have reviewed.
- Ask to Browse: the child can request access to a site, and the parent decides whether to allow it.
- Limit Adult Websites: a broader filter that blocks many adult sites while allowing normal browsing. It is not a gambling-specific blocklist.
Choose the policy under the device’s Screen Time content restrictions, then test Safari. If another browser is installed, configure or remove it separately; a Safari setting cannot automatically enforce the same policy in every browser.
Restrict app access and age-rated content
Use Screen Time’s app and content restrictions to prevent installation or use of betting, casino, lottery, and sports-wagering apps. Set the permitted app age rating conservatively, and disable purchases or require parent approval where the control is available. Age ratings reduce exposure to new downloads but do not prove that every gambling app will be classified correctly. Review already-installed apps and remove or block any that do not fit the family rule.
Schedule use and protect the settings
Screen Time can schedule device use and set time allowances. Use downtime to create device-free periods and app limits to restrict high-risk or distracting apps. Confirm that the Screen Time passcode is different from the device unlock code and known only to the parent. A child who knows either code may be able to change the restrictions or add another account.

Think of “strength” as the type of control, not a promise of perfect coverage. Approval-only browsing is stronger than screening, while a private PIN or supervised account improves resistance to changes. No row in the table covers every app, browser, advertisement, and device by itself.

A practical layered setup for a child’s devices
For one Android phone
- Create a private parental-controls PIN in Settings > Parental controls.
- Block known gambling apps through App limits and turn off Allow app.
- Enable Block explicit sites and Filter explicit search results under Web content filters.
- Set the app-store maturity filter and require approval for new downloads or purchases where available.
- Set YouTube Restricted Mode or enroll the child in a supervised kid account.
- Set Google SafeSearch to Filter in every Google account and browser the child uses.
- Test the device with the child’s normal browser, search app, YouTube app, and any in-app browser.
For one iPhone or iPad
- Place the child’s account in Apple Family Sharing.
- Open Screen Time for the child’s device and create a private Screen Time passcode.
- Choose Approved Websites Only, Ask to Browse, or Limit Adult Websites under web-content restrictions.
- Set app access and age ratings conservatively, then block or remove known gambling apps.
- Restrict purchases and require parent approval where the device offers that option.

For several devices and browsers

- Apply the service-level controls inside YouTube and Google Search, not only the operating-system controls.

Common failures and how to fix them
Gambling videos still appear on YouTube
Restricted Mode screens potentially adult material rather than every gambling topic. Switch to a supervised kid account with the most appropriate content setting, review the child’s subscriptions and recommendations, and block individual channels or videos when the service offers that option. Keep app and website restrictions active because YouTube cannot control gambling content elsewhere.
A betting website opens despite Android filters
Confirm that the child is using a supported Google, Chrome, or Android System WebView path. Check for another browser, a social app’s in-app browser, a guest profile, or a different device. Add a direct website block or move to an approval-only website policy if the device supports one. Web filters may not classify a gambling page as explicit, so an explicit-content setting alone may not be enough.
SafeSearch turns off
Check whether the child is signed out, using another Google account, or searching through a different browser. SafeSearch can be controlled by an account, device, network administrator, operating-system controls, or antivirus software. Set it in the account and on each relevant device, then identify which layer is changing it.
An app remains installed after changing the age filter
App-store maturity filters restrict new downloads; they do not automatically remove every existing app. Block the app directly through Android App limits or Apple app restrictions, then review sideloaded apps, alternate accounts, and shared devices.
The child bypasses the restriction with another device
The FTC’s advice is direct: controls need to be configured on all devices a child uses. Add the device to the supervised account, set its local PIN or passcode, and check browsers and app profiles. Account-level tools help across enrolled devices, but they cannot manage an un-enrolled phone or an unsupported browser.
Maintenance, privacy, and family rules
Review after updates and new installations
Operating-system updates can change labels, defaults, or supported browsers. Review controls after every major update, when a child adds a browser or account, and whenever a new phone, tablet, computer, or console enters the household. Confirm that the parent PIN or Screen Time passcode still protects the settings.

Explain the controls instead of relying only on secrecy
Technical filters reduce accidental exposure, but they do not replace an age-appropriate conversation about gambling, advertising, and money. Explain which sites and apps are restricted, how the child can request access to a legitimate school or news page, and what to do after seeing gambling promotion. This makes a blocked result easier to report rather than something the child feels compelled to bypass.

Protect legitimate information
A strict block can hide a news report, a sports article, or educational material that mentions gambling without promoting it. Use supervised accounts, approval requests, and reviewed allowlists when the child needs legitimate information. Check false positives before widening the restriction to every site or video in a category.
