Paint restores or creates parts of the world; Thinner changes the environment and can expose hidden secrets. Select the one that matches the result you want, then use the control prompt shown by your platform. The official game listings explain the two tools’ purposes but do not publish a universal button mapping or a complete object-by-object interaction chart, so check the current in-game controls rather than relying on instructions for older games.
Paint and Thinner in one glance
Paint and Thinner are fictional tools in Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed, not real materials that you need to buy. Their functions are deliberately opposed: Paint is the restorative and creative choice, while Thinner is the altering and uncovering choice.
| Tool | Primary purpose | When it is the sensible first choice | What the official descriptions do not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paint | Restores beauty and harmony, and can create or restore parts of the world. | An object, area or element appears damaged, incomplete or intended to be brought back. | A universal list of targets, exact resource costs, spray range, duration or a guaranteed result for every encounter. |
| Thinner | Alters the environment and can uncover hidden secrets. | You are investigating an apparently solid or suspicious part of the environment and want to look for something concealed. | A promise that every object hit by Thinner disappears, or that a particular use always opens a specific route. |
PlayStation’s official product description summarizes the distinction as using Paint to restore beauty and harmony or Thinner to alter the environment and uncover hidden secrets. Nintendo’s listing gives the same high-level explanation. Those descriptions establish the tools’ roles, but they are not a complete strategy guide for every puzzle or encounter.

What Paint does
Restoring the world
Paint is the option to try when your goal is recovery. The game’s official descriptions say it can restore parts of the world and return beauty and harmony. In practical terms, look for a world element that appears to need repair or completion, then select Paint and apply it using the action shown in your control configuration.

The wording “restore” should not be read as a promise that every damaged-looking object can be painted. An individual target’s behavior depends on the encounter designed by the game. If Paint produces no obvious change, stop spraying and reassess the target instead of assuming you need a longer, stronger or differently shaped stream; the public product descriptions do not document those parameters.
Creating or bringing back elements
Paint is also described as able to create or restore parts of the world. That makes it useful when progress appears to require an element that is missing rather than merely discolored. The correct interpretation is functional, not cosmetic: Paint can affect the state of the environment, not just its appearance.
Do not infer a fixed recipe such as “always paint doors” or “always paint platforms.” Rebrushed’s official pages do not provide an exhaustive target list. Use the immediate visual context, the objective you are pursuing and the result of the first controlled application to decide whether the target is intended for Paint.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPaint and character or story choices
Paint is one of the choices that contributes to the game’s broader decision system. Official listings say that choices influence the story and that the game has multiple endings. A single use of Paint should therefore be treated as one decision in a larger sequence, not as a guaranteed shortcut to a particular ending.
If you are pursuing a role-playing preference such as repairing rather than changing the environment, Paint is the thematically consistent option. That preference may affect how you approach later situations, but the available official material does not map every Paint decision to a named ending.

What Thinner does
Changing environmental states
Thinner is the environmental-alteration tool. The official descriptions specifically connect it with altering your surroundings and uncovering hidden secrets. When a route, recess or surface looks deliberately concealing, Thinner is the tool to investigate first.
“Alter” is intentionally broader than “erase.” Some older explanations of the Epic Mickey series use erasing language, but those explanations are not proof of how a particular Rebrushed target behaves. A Thinner application may change what is accessible or visible, but the official Rebrushed listings do not guarantee that every object vanishes permanently.

Looking for hidden secrets
Thinner’s strongest stated use is discovery. If the environment suggests that something is concealed, use Thinner carefully and inspect the newly revealed space, surface or route. The secret may be environmental rather than an obvious collectible, and no official source supplied for this guide specifies a universal visual indicator or a fixed sequence for finding every secret.
Approach exploration as an observation loop: identify a suspicious target, apply the tool according to the current prompt, look for a change, and then examine the resulting space. If nothing changes, the target may not be interactive, may require Paint instead, or may belong to a later situation. The public descriptions do not establish which explanation applies in every case.
Thinner and consequential choices
Choosing Thinner can be part of the same story-shaping system as choosing Paint. The game’s store descriptions state that choices influence the story and lead to multiple endings, but they do not publish a complete decision tree. You should not assume that one Thinner use automatically locks an ending, nor that every use has equal narrative weight.

How to use Paint or Thinner step by step
The following procedure avoids inventing button commands that are not confirmed for Rebrushed. It works with a controller or keyboard because the final input is whatever your current control screen assigns.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Identify the intended target. Decide whether you are looking at something that needs restoration or creation, or at something that may be hiding or blocking environmental information. Start with the purpose, not with a random spray.
- Open the control settings. From the game’s settings or options menu, review the entries for selecting Paint or Thinner and for performing the spray or use action. Names and layouts can differ by platform and input device.
- Select the tool. Choose Paint for a restorative or creative attempt and Thinner for an environmental-alteration or secret-finding attempt. If the game displays an on-screen prompt near the target, use that prompt as the immediate authority.
- Position the camera and character. Face the target squarely and move close enough for the game’s interaction to register. Do not assume that distance, angle or duration are identical for every object; those specifications are not published in the official listings.
- Apply the tool using the displayed action. Use the configured input and watch the target while applying it. A short, deliberate application makes it easier to tell which tool caused a change than holding the input indiscriminately.
- Inspect the result. With Paint, look for a restored or newly created element. With Thinner, look for an altered surface, opening or previously hidden detail. If the environment does not respond, stop and reconsider the target or the other tool.
- Continue only after the state is clear. Use the new route, investigate the revealed area or move on to the next objective. Treat each choice as potentially consequential because the game advertises a story shaped by player decisions.
Finding the correct controls on each platform
PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4
The official PlayStation listing confirms PS5 and PS4 versions and lists controller-remapping support among the accessibility features. It does not establish the default Paint, Thinner or spray buttons. Open the in-game settings on the version you are playing and read the current mapping; a remapped controller can make a guide’s button name especially misleading.
Nintendo Switch
Nintendo’s official store listing confirms a Switch edition and describes the same Paint-versus-Thinner distinction. Use the controls shown in the Switch version’s settings. Button labels can be presented differently when playing handheld, with Joy-Con controllers or with a separate controller, so follow the active configuration rather than a generic controller diagram.
PC and Steam
Steam identifies Rebrushed as a 3D platformer set in Wasteland. On PC, inspect the keyboard, mouse or controller bindings in the game’s settings before attempting a puzzle. If you change a binding, note the new key or button for both tool selection and the use action; changing only one of them can make the mechanic appear nonfunctional.
A decision framework for puzzles and encounters
| What you observe | First tool to consider | Reasoning | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|---|
| An element looks damaged, incomplete or in need of restoration. | Paint | Paint is the documented restorative and world-creating option. | That every damaged-looking element is paintable. |
| A surface or area looks as though it may conceal a route or secret. | Thinner | Thinner is documented as an environmental-alteration and secret-finding tool. | That the target will always disappear or reveal a specific reward. |
| The target shows no response. | Reassess before switching repeatedly. | The object may not be interactive, may require the other tool or may be relevant later. | That more spray, a different duration or a hidden button combination is required; those mechanics are not established by the official listings. |
| You are choosing according to a preferred story approach. | Use the tool matching that approach. | Official listings say choices influence the story and multiple endings exist. | That one isolated use determines an ending. |
This framework is deliberately conservative. It tells you where to start without turning a broad store description into an unsupported promise about a particular object.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using real paint or thinner
No physical paint, solvent or accessory is needed. Paint and Thinner are in-game mechanics. Buying or applying real chemicals cannot affect the game and can create an unnecessary safety hazard.
Expecting a universal button guide
Official product pages do not publish a single default mapping for every platform and input device. A button listed for another version, a remapped controller or a different keyboard layout may not match yours. Check the active settings first.
Assuming Thinner always means permanent erasure
Older series descriptions often use erase-oriented language, but Rebrushed’s official descriptions say that Thinner alters the environment and uncovers hidden secrets. Use that wording as the reliable baseline. Do not promise that a particular object will vanish, stay gone or always expose the same item without a Rebrushed-specific source for that encounter.
Assuming Paint is merely decoration
The official descriptions connect Paint with restoring or creating world elements. If you treat it only as a cosmetic effect, you may overlook its environmental purpose. Conversely, do not paint every visible surface indiscriminately; the game does not publish a complete target catalog.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Believing one choice guarantees an ending
The game advertises multiple endings and story-influencing choices, not a one-use ending switch. Consider the broader pattern of decisions rather than trying to force a result from one spray.

Why instructions for Epic Mickey 2 can mislead you
A manual for Epic Mickey 2 describes Paint as filling objects and befriending characters, and Thinner as erasing objects and battling enemies. It also discusses short sprays, held streams and trigger-button mappings. That manual is for a different game. Its terminology, target behavior, timing and controls are not verified instructions for Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed.
Use legacy material only as historical context for why the two tools may seem familiar. For Rebrushed, let the current game’s control settings and the behavior of the specific encounter take precedence. This distinction prevents a plausible-looking old trigger command from sending you in the wrong direction.
How the mechanic fits the game and its versions
Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed is a 3D platformer set in Wasteland, according to its official Steam listing. PlayStation’s product page gives a September 24, 2024 release date and lists PS4 and PS5 versions; Nintendo offers a Switch listing. The same core Paint-and-Thinner concept is described across the PlayStation and Nintendo store pages, while platform-specific controls still need to be checked in the version you own.

The platform information matters because control prompts, accessibility options and input devices vary. A strategy based on the tools’ purposes transfers more reliably than a copied button diagram. When an update, control remap or alternate device changes the prompt, the in-game settings remain the correct reference.
Quick checklist before you move on
- Have you identified whether your goal is restoration/creation or environmental alteration/secret hunting?
- Have you checked the active control mapping for your platform and input device?
- Are you targeting an object that visibly responds, rather than assuming every surface is interactive?
- Did you inspect the environment after applying the tool?
- Are you avoiding claims imported from the Epic Mickey 2 manual?
- Are you treating the choice as part of a larger story system rather than a guaranteed ending trigger?
Frequently needed clarification
Do Paint and Thinner require separate real-world products?
No. They are fictional in-game tools. The relevant product is the game itself, not household paint or paint thinner.
Which one should I use first?
Use Paint when you want to restore or create a world element. Use Thinner when you want to alter the environment or investigate a possible hidden secret. If the target does not respond, reassess rather than assuming a fixed universal rule.
Where can I find the exact buttons?
Open the control settings in your copy of Rebrushed and check the entries for selecting and using each tool. The official product pages confirm the mechanic’s purposes but do not provide one complete button map for all platforms.
