OpenResty lets you keep Nginx’s connection handling, routing, TLS, static-file serving, and proxy directives while adding LuaJIT and Lua-aware modules for application code. On a VPS, the most maintainable approach is to install an official package for your Linux distribution, create a self-contained project prefix, place routing and edge policy in nginx.conf, and add Lua only for dynamic request decisions or responses.
This guide builds a working endpoint, explains the project-prefix layout, shows how to install Lua libraries with opm, and covers the operational choices that matter when the service is exposed from a VPS.

What OpenResty adds to Nginx
OpenResty is an Nginx-centered web platform that bundles LuaJIT and modules that let Lua run inside Nginx request-processing phases. The maintainers describe it as an enhanced Nginx; the official tutorial calls it a dynamic web platform based on NGINX and LuaJIT. OpenResty’s LuaJIT branch has been bundled and enabled by default in releases since 1.5.8.1.
The practical model is straightforward:
- Nginx accepts connections and applies configuration. Its
http,server, andlocationblocks remain the main routing and policy layer. - OpenResty’s Lua modules run application logic inside the worker. A Lua handler can generate a response, authenticate a request, shape input, choose a cache path, or call an upstream.
- Lua libraries supply reusable application components. Encoders, clients, and helpers can be installed with
opmor kept in a project-local module tree.
This preserves Nginx’s mature static-file and proxy behavior while allowing small or medium endpoints to run without a separate application server for every route. That is an architectural benefit of the integration, not a promise of a particular requests-per-second result.

Choose an installation method before touching the VPS
Start with the official pre-built package for the operating system on your VPS. The installation documentation lists supported packages for Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS, RHEL, Fedora, OpenSUSE, Alpine, and Amazon Linux. A package is normally the best default because it supplies a known layout and avoids maintaining a compiler toolchain and custom build.
Compile from source only when no suitable package exists or when you need configure-time control, such as a custom module or build flag. A source build gives you that control but makes you responsible for rebuilding, tracking bundled versions, and checking compatibility whenever the VPS is recreated.

Do not assume that a distribution’s ordinary nginx package is equivalent to OpenResty. When you install the official package, use the openresty command in examples unless your installation deliberately exposes the bundled Nginx executable as nginx.
Prepare the VPS and the deployment boundary
Create a directory owned by the service account that will hold the application prefix. The prefix is a deployable unit: it contains the configuration, logs, and any local Lua modules needed by that release.

cd ~/my-openresty-appFor a production service, use a dedicated least-privilege account rather than an interactive administrator account. Make only the required prefix and log directories writable, and place secrets outside a configuration file that is committed to source control. Inject secrets through the deployment environment or a protected file mechanism.
If another TLS terminator, firewall, or load balancer fronts the application, bind the OpenResty listener to a private interface or internal port and expose only the ports required by that deployment. If OpenResty terminates TLS itself, keep the certificate and key permissions restricted to the service account and configure TLS in Nginx directives rather than in Lua.

Using an official package
- Identify the VPS distribution and version.
- Use the OpenResty package instructions for that supported distribution.
- Confirm that the installed executable is available as
openresty. Some installations also provide a bundlednginxexecutable. - Record the OpenResty release and the bundled Nginx and LuaJIT versions in your deployment notes.
Keeping those versions recorded matters because bundled Nginx and LuaJIT behavior, as well as module compatibility, changes between OpenResty releases.

Building from source
Use the documented source flow when a package does not fit your VPS or you need custom build options:
./configure

sudo make installThe documented default installation prefix is /usr/local/openresty. Add the prefix’s bin/ directory and the Nginx sbin/ directory to PATH as appropriate for your shell and service definition. Before compiling, decide which third-party modules are genuinely required. Modules not maintained by OpenResty are unsupported by the project and can compromise stability, so each one needs its own review and compatibility test.
Create a self-contained project prefix
A minimal application can be laid out as follows:

└── resty_modules/ # optional, for local opm installsThe prefix is the directory passed with -p. Relative paths such as logs/error.log resolve beneath it, which makes the application easier to copy, test, and rebuild on another VPS.

Write the first configuration
Create conf/nginx.conf with one worker, an events block, an HTTP block, and a Lua-powered location:

}worker_processes 1 is a small getting-started configuration, not a universal production tuning value. Choose worker and connection settings for the VPS and workload after you have a measured reason to change them.
Start and verify it
- Change into the project directory so the prefix is unambiguous:
cd my-openresty-app. - Start OpenResty with the current directory as the prefix and the project configuration:
openresty -p "$PWD/" -c conf/nginx.conf. - Request the endpoint locally:
curl http://127.0.0.1:8080/. - Confirm that the response contains
<p>hello, world</p>.
If your installation exposes the bundled executable as nginx, use the same -p and -c arguments with that executable. Keep logs/error.log open while developing; Lua syntax errors, missing modules, and invalid directives are reported there.
Use Nginx directives for the edge and Lua for application logic
As the application grows, preserve a clear division of responsibility. Nginx configuration should express routing and policies that Nginx already handles well; Lua should handle decisions or response generation that require application code.

Routing and static assets
Add separate locations for API paths and static files instead of placing all behavior in one catch-all handler. A typical shape is:

}The exact filesystem path and route names are application choices. The important boundary is that file serving, caching headers, request limits, and other edge policy stay in directives, while dynamic behavior stays in Lua.
Reverse proxying and TLS
Use Nginx proxy directives when a route should be forwarded to an upstream service. Configure TLS, redirects, header policy, and connection limits at the Nginx layer. Lua can authenticate the request or choose an upstream before proxying, but it should not replace mature Nginx features without a specific reason.
Lua request phases
OpenResty exposes Lua hooks at request-processing phases. The first example uses content_by_lua_block because it generates the response body. Other handlers can perform access checks, rewrite decisions, or logging at the phase suited to that task. Keep phase-specific work small and explicit so a later maintainer can see whether code is authenticating, rewriting, producing content, or recording telemetry.
Move non-trivial code into modules
Inline blocks are useful for a first endpoint, but application logic belongs in Lua files once it has more than a few lines. Put those files in a library directory, load them with require, and keep route-specific code separate from shared helpers. This gives each deployable prefix a clear dependency boundary and makes unit-level Lua experiments possible outside the full server configuration.
Handle shared state deliberately
Do not assume ordinary per-request Lua globals are a safe, shared application store. Decide whether state belongs in a documented OpenResty shared-memory primitive, a worker-safe cache, or an external service. Define expiration and consistency behavior before using state for sessions, counters, or rate limits.
Install reusable Lua libraries with opm
opm is OpenResty’s official package manager. A project-local installation places Lua modules beneath resty_modules/lualib/, with compiled extensions, when present, beneath the same module tree.

Configure the module search paths
Add these directives inside the http {} block:
lua_package_path "$prefix/resty_modules/lualib/?.lua;;";
lua_package_cpath "$prefix/resty_modules/lualib/?.so;;";Start the application from its project directory so $prefix resolves to that directory. The double semicolon preserves the default search paths after the project-local path.
Use the local tree from the command line
For command-line experiments with locally installed modules, the documentation shows passing the library directory to resty:
resty -I ./resty_modules/lualib ...Keep a record of every installed module and its version. A local tree makes the prefix reproducible: a rebuild can restore the configuration and Lua dependencies together rather than relying on whatever happens to be installed globally on the host.
Avoid blocking libraries in workers
The opm documentation warns that a Lua module written without OpenResty’s event-driven model can block Nginx workers during network I/O. Prefer OpenResty-compatible, non-blocking libraries for request paths and verify how a dependency performs I/O before putting it on a hot route. A library that works in a standalone Lua script can still be a poor fit inside an Nginx worker if it waits synchronously on the network.
Operate the application safely on a VPS
Validate before reload
Run a configuration test before every reload and keep the error log available during the change. A failed validation should stop the deployment rather than replacing a known-good worker set with an invalid configuration. Test the endpoint with curl after a successful reload.
Control exposure
- Expose only the listener ports required by the deployment.
- Keep an internal application listener private when a separate TLS or firewall layer fronts it.
- Apply request-size, connection, and rate limits in Nginx directives where possible.
- Use a dedicated least-privilege service account.
Protect configuration and secrets
Do not commit passwords, API keys, or private certificate material to nginx.conf. Supply secrets through the deployment environment or a protected file mechanism, and ensure the service account can read only what it needs.
Make rebuilds repeatable
Record the OpenResty release, bundled Nginx and LuaJIT versions, source-build options if any, and every opm module version. Pin and review third-party modules because compatibility can change as the bundled components change. A rebuild should reproduce the same prefix structure, configuration, and dependency set rather than silently selecting newer code.

Choose package scope for Lua dependencies
There are two practical ways to place Lua libraries:

Use the $prefix-based paths for the local layout and start from the project directory. Do not mix a locally tested module with an untracked global version without recording which one the worker actually loads.
Common failure modes and fixes
openresty: command not found
The executable is not on PATH, or a source installation was placed under /usr/local/openresty without adding its directories. Use the full executable path or add the prefix’s bin/ and Nginx sbin/ directories to the service environment. Confirm whether your package names the command openresty or exposes the bundled binary as nginx.
The process starts but cannot find a log or module
Check the prefix. Relative paths in the configuration resolve from -p, not necessarily from the directory in which a service manager was launched. Start with -p "$PWD/" while testing, verify that logs/ exists, and confirm that lua_package_path points to the actual local module directory.
A Lua require fails
Inspect the module’s installed path and filename, then check the lua_package_path and lua_package_cpath directives. For a local command-line test, include -I ./resty_modules/lualib with resty. If the module contains network code, also verify that it is designed for OpenResty’s non-blocking worker model.
A configuration change refuses to load
Read logs/error.log for the directive, file, or line that failed. Check Nginx syntax and Lua syntax separately, then run the configuration test again before reloading. Keep the previous known-good configuration available so a failed experiment can be reverted quickly.
Requests hang under load
Look first for blocking network I/O in Lua libraries or handlers. Replace blocking clients with OpenResty-compatible non-blocking alternatives, or move that work to an external service. Then inspect upstream timeouts and connection limits in the Nginx configuration. Do not infer capacity from a generic benchmark: performance depends on the VPS hardware, OpenResty release, configuration, request mix, and test method.
A practical development-to-production workflow
- Install the official package when your distribution is supported; otherwise document the source build and its options.
- Create the prefix with
conf/nginx.conf,logs/, and an optionalresty_modules/directory. - Run the minimal
content_by_lua_blockendpoint and verify it withcurl. - Split API routes, static assets, and proxy targets into separate locations.
- Keep TLS, limits, file serving, and proxy policy in Nginx directives.
- Move substantial Lua code into modules loaded with
require. - Install dependencies with
opm, configure the$prefix-based paths, and record versions. - Test configuration and requests locally, then deploy under a least-privilege account with restricted exposure.
- Before each upgrade, review bundled Nginx/LuaJIT changes and third-party module compatibility.
No single performance number applies to every VPS configuration. Treat capacity as a workload-specific question and benchmark only with the exact hardware, OpenResty release, configuration, request mix, and test procedure you intend to operate.
