To use OpenMod RCon on an Unturned server, install the OpenMod.Unturned module, enable and configure the RocketMod-compatible RCon component, restart the server, then connect with a TCP RCon client such as mcrcon. You need a matching password, the correct RCon TCP port, and a firewall rule that permits only trusted sources whenever possible.
The exact configuration keys vary between OpenMod/RocketMod integrations and hosting panels, so use the field names supplied by your installed component rather than copying a configuration from a different version. The procedure below separates the parts that are consistent from the parts that are provider-specific.

OpenMod describes itself as a .NET plugin framework for game servers. On Unturned, its module can provide a RocketMod-compatible RCon integration. The OpenMod API exposes RocketModRconClient in the OpenMod.Unturned.RocketMod.Rcon namespace; it derives from a TCP RCon client and supports receiving data and sending messages.
RCon (remote console) gives an authenticated client a way to submit server commands without joining the game. An RCon login is represented to OpenMod commands as an RconUser actor. That does not automatically mean every plugin command is unrestricted: OpenMod assigns permissions to commands, and the command or plugin can check those permissions before executing.

RCon is an administration interface, not the same thing as Unturned’s gameplay connection. The game server’s base port, the adjacent port Unturned uses for additional in-game traffic, and the RCon listener may all be different. Treat the RCon endpoint as a separate privileged service.
What you need before changing the server
- File or panel access to the Unturned dedicated-server installation.
- Permission to stop and restart the server.
- The OpenMod.Unturned module ZIP from the current OpenMod installation guide.
- Access to the configuration used by your OpenMod/RocketMod RCon integration, either a file or a hosting-panel form.
- A TCP RCon client, such as
mcrcon, on the computer from which you will administer the server. - A plan for the RCon port and for restricting its source addresses in the host or cloud firewall.
Make a backup of the server configuration before editing it. Stop the server first; editing a file while the process is running can be overwritten on shutdown or can leave the service using an older in-memory value.

- Stop the server. Use the host panel’s stop action or stop the dedicated-server process cleanly.
- Open the installation directory. Locate the Unturned server’s
Modulesdirectory. If the directory does not exist, confirm that you are in the actual server root rather than a backup or Steam download cache. - Download the current module package. The official installation guide names the archive in the form
OpenMod.Unturned.Module-vX.X.X.zip. Use the release intended for your server’s OpenMod/Unturned setup. - Extract the module folder. Copy the
OpenMod.Unturnedfolder from the archive into the server’sModulesfolder. Do not add an extra level of nesting such asModules/OpenMod.Unturned.Module-vX.X.X/OpenMod.Unturnedunless the package’s instructions explicitly require it. - Start the server once. On the first start, OpenMod downloads its core components, so startup can take longer than usual. Keep the console or panel log open while this happens.
- Confirm the load. Look for OpenMod startup messages and for the RocketMod-compatible RCon component. If OpenMod never appears, check the folder placement, file permissions, and whether the server is running the installation directory you edited.
Do not configure RCon until the module is actually loading. A password or port in an unused configuration file cannot create a listener.

Configure the RCon credentials and port
The field names and file location depend on the integration and on your hosting panel. Some installations expose an RCon username, password, and port together; others place those values in a RocketMod-compatible configuration file or a panel’s “RCon” section. Use the configuration associated with the loaded component.
- Stop the server again.
- Find the active RCon settings. Use the component’s generated configuration or the host panel’s OpenMod/RCon settings. If several similarly named files exist, identify the one referenced by the startup log or panel documentation.
- Set a unique, strong password. Do not reuse a password from the panel, operating system, database, or another game server. Prefer a long random value that is not a word or server name.
- Set a dedicated TCP port. Choose a free port that is not being used by the game server, another RCon service, or a panel agent. Record the number exactly; a one-digit error produces a timeout or a connection to the wrong service.
- Set a username if the integration provides one. Some clients can send a username, while others authenticate with a password only. Keep the username and password exactly as the integration expects.
- Save valid syntax. Preserve the file’s existing format, indentation rules, and quoting. A malformed YAML, JSON, or provider-specific file can cause the component to fall back to defaults or fail to load.
- Restart the server. The RCon listener normally binds during startup; changing a file without a restart will not prove that the new values are active.
- Verify the listener. Check the console or panel log for a message that the RCon service started and note the port it reports. If no listener message appears, resolve the load or configuration error before testing the client.
Do not assume that a field called “server port” is the RCon port. Unturned’s gameplay port and the RCon port are separate settings unless your particular integration explicitly combines them.
Plan Unturned and RCon ports correctly
Unturned’s gameplay ports
Unturned documents 27015 as the default base Port. It uses two consecutive ports, with the second used implicitly for in-game traffic. If you run more than one instance, assign each instance a distinct base port and reserve its adjacent port as well. For example, a server using base port 27015 also needs its next port available; the next server must not overlap either value.

The RCon port is separate
Choose and expose only the TCP port used by the RCon integration. Do not open the entire server port range “just in case,” and do not infer the RCon number from the default gameplay port. A host panel may map an internal RCon port to a different public port, so use the externally reachable value when connecting from outside the host network.
NAT, forwarding, and host firewalls
For a self-hosted Internet server, forward the selected RCon TCP port from the router to the machine running the server, then permit it in the machine firewall. In a cloud environment, add the equivalent inbound rule to the provider’s security group or firewall. Restrict the source to your office, VPN, or administrator IP ranges instead of allowing the whole Internet whenever your addresses are stable.
Unturned hosting documentation describes Commands.dat as a newline-separated configuration file and notes that Internet servers need either Fake IP or port forwarding; it also recommends a Game Server Login Token for Internet hosting. Those requirements concern making the game server reachable. RCon still needs its own TCP rule and should be treated as an administrative exposure.

Connect with mcrcon
After the server log confirms the listener, connect from a machine that can reach the selected address and port. A conceptual mcrcon command is:

- Resolve the server address you intend to administer. A private address such as
192.168.x.xworks only from a network that can route to it. - Confirm the RCon port in the startup log or panel, not merely in an old note or a different server instance.
- Run a harmless command such as
Helpto test both authentication and command execution. - After testing, remove the password from shell history where practical and never paste it into a ticket, screenshot, public log, or shared script.
A successful TCP connection followed by an authentication error means the network path is working; a refusal or timeout points to service state, address, port, NAT, or firewall rather than the password.

Run Unturned commands through RCon
Unturned’s command reference says commands can be entered in the server console or in in-game chat. Administrators use / or @ prefixes in chat. Through RCon, send the command text itself unless your client or integration explicitly documents a prefix. Start with read-only commands, then use state-changing commands only when you intend to affect the live server.

The command reference also includes runtime, configuration, and cheat commands. Availability can differ by game version, installed plugin, and permissions. A command that works in the console may still be denied to an RCon actor if its OpenMod permission node is not granted.
When a plugin command is denied
Do not assume that a valid RCon login is a superuser login. Inspect the plugin’s documented permission node and the permissions assigned to the RconUser actor. OpenMod’s command model favors metadata and permission checks over hardcoded actor-type checks, so the correct fix is usually to grant the required node through the installed permissions system, not to change the command text.
Secure the RCon endpoint
- Allowlist sources. Permit the RCon TCP port only from administrator addresses, a VPN subnet, or a management jump host when possible.
- Use a dedicated credential. Rotate it when an administrator leaves, a host account is compromised, or the password may have appeared in logs.
- Separate administration from gameplay. Keep the RCon port distinct from the public game ports and document which firewall rule belongs to which service.
- Watch logs. Repeated failed logins, unexpected source addresses, or commands at unusual times warrant investigation and a credential change.
- Protect the client side. Avoid putting the password in shared shell scripts, screenshots, process listings, or command history. Use a protected secrets mechanism if you automate administration.
- Back up before destructive commands. Commands such as bans, configuration changes, and plugin actions can affect players immediately and may not be reversible.
Exposing an administrative RCon listener to every Internet address increases the opportunity for password guessing and unauthorized commands. A firewall restriction is valuable even when the password is strong.
Troubleshoot common connection failures

Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Both approaches can run OpenMod RCon. The practical difference is who controls the network and who exposes the settings.

Choose self-hosting when you need complete filesystem, firewall, and automation control. A managed service can reduce network work, but confirm that it exposes the RCon port, credentials, logs, and source-IP restrictions you require.
