Short answer: one remote can reliably handle your TV’s power, volume, and input while you use either Apple TV 4K or Fire TV Cube, but the cited official instructions do not establish one remote that fully navigates both streaming platforms. Use HDMI-CEC for shared TV commands, then keep the Siri Remote for tvOS and the Alexa Voice Remote for Fire TV apps. An IR universal remote can be taught to control Apple TV 4K and the TV, but you should not assume it will replace the Fire TV Cube remote without testing the exact model.
What “one remote” can mean in this setup
Apple TV 4K and Fire TV Cube are separate streaming computers. Each has its own operating system, menus, voice functions, and navigation commands. A TV can expose a smaller set of shared controls—power, volume, mute, and input—through HDMI-CEC or infrared. That is why a single remote can appear to control the whole system even though it is not actually operating both streamers in the same way.

In practical terms, select the streamer you want to watch, use HDMI-CEC or IR for the TV, and treat each streamer’s own remote as the navigation device. This arrangement avoids trying to make an unverified remote combination behave like a universal controller.

- An Apple TV 4K with its Siri Remote and a Fire TV Cube with its Alexa Voice Remote.
- A TV with enough HDMI inputs to connect both streamers directly whenever possible.
- A high-speed HDMI cable for the Fire TV Cube’s HDMI output, as required by Amazon’s setup instructions.
- The TV’s HDMI-CEC feature enabled. Manufacturers use different names for the same general function.
- A clear IR path if you rely on infrared. The Cube has an internal IR blaster; Apple TV and many universal remotes need suitable line of sight.
- If the Cube or equipment is hidden in a cabinet, a compatible IR transmitter extension cable with a 3.5 mm jack may be needed.
Update the TV and both streamers before troubleshooting control behavior. CEC implementation can change with TV model and firmware, and the available menu wording may not match another model from the same manufacturer.

Connect both streaming devices directly to the TV
- Plug Apple TV 4K into one available HDMI input on the TV.
- Connect the Fire TV Cube’s HDMI output to a second available HDMI input with a high-speed HDMI cable.
- Turn on the TV and note the input label or number used by each device. Renaming the inputs to “Apple TV” and “Fire TV,” when your TV offers that option, makes later testing easier.
- Keep the Cube where its IR signals can reach the equipment, unless you plan to install the extension transmitter.
Connecting directly to the TV gives the TV a clear CEC relationship with each streamer. An audio receiver or soundbar can be inserted later, but adding another HDMI-CEC device introduces another point where power, volume, and input commands can be interpreted differently.
Turn on HDMI-CEC on the TV
HDMI-CEC is the first choice for shared TV commands because it travels through the HDMI cable rather than requiring the remote to point at the TV. The setting is usually under a system, external-input, device-link, or HDMI menu. Amazon lists these manufacturer names:

Exact paths and available switches vary by model and software version. Enable the feature, then check whether the TV offers options for automatic input switching, device power control, or remote control through HDMI. Some televisions separate those options, so turning on a general CEC switch may not enable every behavior.

Configure Apple TV 4K to control the television
Apple documents several ways to control Apple TV 4K. A supported TV or receiver remote, a network-based remote for home-control systems, or an infrared remote commonly called a universal remote can control Apple TV 4K. The Siri Remote remains the included Apple TV remote and is the most predictable choice for tvOS navigation.
Use HDMI-CEC for power and volume
- On Apple TV, open Settings > Remotes and Devices.
- Under Home Theater Control, choose Control TVs and Receivers or Turn On Your TV with Your Remote, depending on the wording shown by your software version.
- Open Volume Control and select Auto or HDMI.
- Press the Siri Remote’s volume and power controls while the Apple TV input is selected. Confirm that the TV responds.
Apple’s specifications describe TV or receiver control through IR or CEC. If HDMI-CEC is working, the Apple TV can send the shared commands over the HDMI connection without learning the TV’s infrared codes.
Use the TV’s infrared commands instead
If CEC is unreliable, choose TV via IR under Volume Control. The Siri Remote must be able to reach the TV’s IR receiver. Keep the remote pointed toward the TV during volume commands and remove objects that block the receiver.

Teach Apple TV a different infrared remote
- Open Settings > Remotes and Devices > Learn Remote.
- Follow the on-screen prompts and press each requested button on the infrared remote you want Apple TV to recognize.
- Save the learned layout when the procedure finishes, then test navigation and the commands you assigned.
This learning function makes an IR universal remote a realistic Apple TV and TV option. It does not prove that the same remote will understand Fire TV Cube’s complete navigation, voice, or app commands. Compatibility depends on the remote’s command set and on what the Cube accepts.
Use a network-based remote
Apple also supports adding a network-based remote through the Home app on an iPhone or iPad. This is useful when you want a phone or tablet to act as the Apple TV control surface, but it does not turn the device into a Fire TV navigation remote. The Apple TV and the mobile device must be on the appropriate home network for network control to work.
Configure Fire TV Cube’s equipment control
Fire TV Cube has two relevant control paths. HDMI-CEC can coordinate some commands with the TV, while the Cube’s internal IR blaster can send television and other equipment commands directly. Amazon’s equipment-control setup is separate from Apple TV’s learned-remote menu.

Set up TV control from the Cube
- On Fire TV, open Settings > Equipment Control > Manage Equipment.
- Choose the option to add or manage the TV and follow the on-screen equipment-control prompts.
- When asked, test power, volume, mute, and input commands. Confirm each response before accepting the setup.
- Use the Alexa Voice Remote to verify that TV power and volume work while the Fire TV input is active.
Amazon states that, after equipment control is configured, the Alexa Voice Remote can control the TV’s power and volume. That is a TV-control function; it is not evidence that the Alexa Voice Remote can operate Apple TV’s tvOS menus.
Use the Cube’s IR blaster in a cabinet
The Cube’s internal IR blaster needs a usable path to the equipment. For a TV or other component inside a cabinet or out of sight, Amazon supports an IR transmitter extension cable with a 3.5 mm jack. Connect the compatible extension to the Cube and place its emitter on the same shelf as the equipment being controlled. Do not hide the emitter behind metal or inside a closed compartment where the signal cannot reach the device’s IR receiver.

How to use the two streamers day to day
After setup, separate “watching” from “navigating.” Use the Siri Remote when you are browsing Apple TV apps, changing tvOS settings, or using Apple-specific functions. Use the Alexa Voice Remote when you are browsing Fire TV apps or issuing Fire TV voice commands. Let CEC or the equipment-control configuration handle the TV’s shared commands.

A reliable switching routine
- Press the button or voice command that wakes the streamer you want to use.
- Wait for the TV to switch to that streamer’s HDMI input. If it does not, select the input with the TV remote or the active streamer’s input command.
- Navigate within the selected platform using its own remote.
- Adjust volume with the active streamer’s remote if CEC or IR control is configured; otherwise use the TV remote.
- When finished, put the streamer into standby. Observe whether the TV follows it into standby or returns to another input; this behavior varies by TV.
Test input switching, power, and volume independently from app navigation. A remote can succeed at TV power while failing to select an input, or it can change volume while leaving the TV on the wrong HDMI source.

The most honest physical category is an IR universal remote used as an Apple TV and TV controller. Do not purchase one on the assumption that “universal” automatically means full Apple TV 4K, Fire TV Cube, and TV navigation. Check the exact remote’s supported commands and test it with both streamers before retiring either original remote.
Troubleshoot power, input, volume, and navigation separately
The TV does not turn on or switch inputs
- Confirm HDMI-CEC is enabled on the TV and that the Apple TV or Cube is connected directly to an HDMI input.
- Check the Apple TV setting under Settings > Remotes and Devices and ensure Control TVs and Receivers or Turn On Your TV with Your Remote is enabled.
- For Fire TV, revisit Settings > Equipment Control > Manage Equipment and repeat the TV test.
- Try selecting the input manually. If manual selection works but automatic switching does not, the problem is CEC coordination rather than the HDMI signal itself.
- Power-cycle the TV and both streamers, then test again. A CEC link can remain in an incorrect state after a device or firmware change.
Volume works on one streamer but not the other
- On Apple TV, try Auto or HDMI first, then TV via IR, Receiver via IR, or Learn New Device as appropriate.
- On Fire TV, repeat the equipment-control prompts and make sure the selected device is the actual TV or receiver producing sound.
- If IR is being used, point the remote at the correct receiver and clear the path.
- If an audio receiver or soundbar sits between the streamer and TV, decide whether volume should target the receiver or the TV and configure that device accordingly.
The Cube is hidden and does not control equipment
Install the compatible 3.5 mm IR transmitter extension, place the emitter on the same shelf as the TV or other controlled equipment, and retest the commands. The extension changes where the IR signal is emitted; it does not add Apple TV navigation or bypass an unsupported command.

A learned Apple TV remote works inconsistently
- Run Settings > Remotes and Devices > Learn Remote again and press each requested key deliberately.
- Use a remote with distinct buttons for the commands you want to learn; ambiguous or multifunction keys can produce an awkward layout.
- Test the learned commands from the normal seating position, not only close to the Apple TV.
- Keep the original Siri Remote available until every required Apple TV function works.
The remote controls the TV but not streaming apps
This is expected when only CEC or TV equipment control has been configured. Those systems handle shared TV functions; they do not establish cross-platform app navigation. Switch to the Siri Remote for tvOS or the Alexa Voice Remote for Fire TV.

CEC behavior varies by TV model and firmware. One television may switch inputs reliably but fail to follow standby; another may pass volume commands while ignoring automatic source selection. The Cube’s extension emitter helps with cabinet placement, while an Apple TV or ordinary IR remote still needs a suitable path to its target.
For the fewest surprises, configure CEC for shared TV behavior and keep both platform remotes nearby. If you want to experiment with a single IR universal remote, use it as an Apple TV and TV controller first, verify every command you need, and only then test whether it offers useful Fire TV functions. This approach gives you one-remote convenience where the documented controls support it without sacrificing access to either streamer’s full interface.
