One-handed mode makes a large Android display easier to reach without changing your apps or buying an accessory. On phones that use Google’s standard implementation, it pulls the upper part of the screen downward. Samsung Galaxy phones instead shrink and reposition the whole display toward the left or right. To set it up, open Settings, search for One-handed mode, turn on Use One-handed mode (or the equivalent switch), then use the activation gesture or button shown for your phone. Menu names, gestures and availability vary by Android version, manufacturer software, model and region, so searching Settings is the most reliable starting point.
What one-handed mode does
One-handed mode is a built-in accessibility and convenience feature for phones with tall or wide screens. Google defines it as “a feature that allows you to navigate your device more efficiently with one hand.” The feature changes the temporary layout of the interface; it does not permanently reduce the display, uninstall anything or alter the size of content inside an app.
On Google’s stock Android and Pixel-style implementation, the upper half of the display is brought down toward the bottom edge. Notifications, controls and app content that would normally be beyond your thumb become reachable. On Samsung Galaxy devices, the entire screen is reduced into a smaller window and placed against the left or right side. The difference matters: the same name describes two different reach strategies.
One-handed mode is software, so there is no required grip, stand or other accessory. A case, screen protector or a hand with limited movement can still make an edge gesture difficult; those situations are addressed in the troubleshooting section.

Set up one-handed mode on any Android phone
- Open Settings.
- Tap the search field or search icon and enter One-handed mode exactly. Searching avoids relying on a menu path that may have moved in a software update.
- Open the matching result. On Google-style Android, the switch is usually labelled Use One-handed mode. Other manufacturers may use a shorter label such as One-handed mode.
- Turn the feature on.
- Read the activation hint on that screen. It normally describes a gesture from the bottom edge or a button action, but the required navigation mode and wording depend on the phone.
- Perform the displayed gesture once in an app or on the home screen. If the screen changes, try reaching the controls you could not comfortably reach before.
- Use the exit action shown by the phone when finished. Depending on the implementation, tapping outside the reduced area, tapping an on-screen control or repeating the activation gesture returns the display to its normal size.
Google’s current instructions include steps that work only on Android 12 and later. If Settings search returns no result, check Settings > About phone > Android version (the exact About-phone wording can vary), install any available system update, and then check the manufacturer’s support instructions for your model. An absent setting can mean that the phone uses a different name, requires a particular navigation mode, or does not provide the feature in that software build.
Google stock Android and Pixel-style phones
Enable the feature
- Open Settings.
- Search for One-handed mode.
- Open the result and enable Use One-handed mode.
- Review the gesture demonstration or instructions displayed there.
Google’s general Android help describes the feature as useful when using a device with one hand or when the screen is large. The usual trigger is a swipe from the bottom edge or a related navigation gesture. The exact direction and visual feedback can differ between Android releases, so follow the animation on your phone rather than copying a gesture from another model.
Use and exit the reduced view
After activation, the upper portion of the interface sits lower on the display. Touch the notification, button or app control that was previously out of reach. To leave one-handed mode, tap the empty area outside the reduced content or use the exit control supplied by that build. If neither action works, repeat the bottom-edge gesture; some versions treat it as a toggle.

Android phones can use gesture navigation or a three-button navigation bar. The one-handed trigger is tied to the navigation system on many builds. A gesture that works while gesture navigation is enabled may do nothing when the three-button layout is selected. If the setting is enabled but the display never moves, open Settings, search for Navigation mode or System navigation, and read the one-handed-mode hint again after changing the navigation style. The labels and available choices are manufacturer-specific.

Samsung Galaxy: shrink, move and resize the screen
Samsung’s basic one-handed mode uses a smaller window containing the full display. You can position that window on the side of the hand you are using, then adjust its size. This is different from the stock Android approach, which mainly pulls the top portion downward.
Turn on Samsung’s basic one-handed mode
- Open Settings.
- Tap Advanced features.
- Tap One-handed mode.
- Turn the setting on.
- Choose Gesture or Button, if your model offers both. Software labels can vary.
Activate it with a gesture or button
With Gesture selected, swipe down on the center of the bottom edge as shown in the Samsung settings screen. With Button selected, double-tap the Home button. The Home-button option applies to models and navigation layouts that expose that control; if your phone has no Home button in its navigation bar, select the available method displayed in settings.
Move and resize the Samsung window
- Activate one-handed mode.
- Tap the arrow at the side of the reduced window to switch it from the left side to the right side, or back again.
- Drag the blue dot at the top corner to make the window larger or smaller.
- Tap the empty area outside the window to return to the normal full-screen view.
The side-switch arrow and blue resize dot are part of Samsung’s implementation. They will not appear on a Pixel-style phone using Google’s standard layout.

Optional: One Hand Operation+
Samsung’s separate One Hand Operation+ utility adds customizable edge-swipe shortcuts. It is an optional control layer, not a prerequisite for the basic one-handed-mode switch. Start with Settings > Advanced features > One-handed mode; add the utility only if you specifically want configurable edge actions beyond the reduced-screen view. Its controls and availability can change independently of the built-in feature.

Motorola and other manufacturers
Motorola’s official guidance states that its one-handed mode is available only when Gesture navigation is selected. On a Motorola phone, check Settings > System > Gestures > One-handed mode, confirm that the setting is enabled, and verify that gesture navigation is active. A three-button layout can prevent the required swipe from working.
Other manufacturers may place the switch under System, Gestures, Accessibility or a manufacturer-specific features page. Because Google warns that navigation settings differ by device, use Settings search first, then follow the activation instruction displayed by that phone. Do not assume that a gesture documented for a Pixel or Samsung will work on another brand.

This table describes the documented patterns, not a guarantee for every handset. Android updates and manufacturer software can rename a control or change the gesture while retaining the same feature name.
Choose the most practical activation method
Use a gesture when edge swipes are easy
Gesture activation keeps the display uncluttered and is convenient when your thumb naturally rests near the bottom edge. Practice the motion from the exact edge rather than starting several millimetres above it. A slow, deliberate swipe is often easier to recognize than a short flick, but use the movement demonstrated by your phone.

Use a button when a case blocks the edge
Samsung models that offer Button mode can avoid an unreliable edge swipe by using the Home-button action. This is useful when a thick case, raised screen protector or a difficult hand position interferes with the bottom edge. The button choice is not universal; select it only when the phone lists it.
Pick the side that matches your grip
Samsung’s side arrow lets you place the reduced window on the left or right. Keep the window on the side where your thumb has the greatest reach, and switch it when changing hands. Google’s pull-down design does not provide the same left/right window control, so reach depends more on how you hold the phone.
Troubleshoot a mode that will not activate
The setting cannot be found
- Search Settings for One-handed mode instead of following a fixed menu path.
- Check the Android version; Google’s current steps include requirements for Android 12 and later.
- Look for a manufacturer-specific entry under System, Gestures, Accessibility or Advanced features.
- Read the phone maker’s support instructions for the exact model and software version.
The switch is on, but the swipe does nothing
- Open the one-handed-mode page again and copy the gesture shown in its animation.
- Check the navigation setting. Motorola requires Gesture navigation, and other builds may impose a similar requirement.
- Try beginning the swipe at the center of the bottom edge, not from a corner.
- Temporarily remove or loosen a case or screen protector that overlaps the gesture area.
- On Samsung, verify whether Gesture or Button is selected, then try the corresponding action.
Samsung activates but the window is inconvenient
- Tap the side arrow to move the window to the other hand.
- Drag the blue dot at the top corner to change its size.
- Tap outside the window to exit, then activate it again after changing the side or size.
The mode exits unexpectedly
One-handed mode is a temporary layout, so tapping outside the reduced region or using the phone’s exit control can close it. If it disappears during a gesture, repeat the activation action and watch for the on-screen indicator. Because exit behavior differs by version, use the control described on the device’s settings page rather than assuming a universal toggle.

Reducing reach distance can help when a notification, navigation control or app button sits near the top of a tall display. It does not change the physical weight or width of the phone. Hold the phone securely, avoid stretching your thumb while walking, and use two hands for tasks that require a firm grip or precise typing. One-handed mode should supplement, not replace, a stable hold.

Remember that the feature changes the system interface around an app. An app’s own layout, keyboard or full-screen video may respond differently, and a control that is reachable in one-handed mode can still be hard to use if the app does not adapt cleanly. Exit the mode when you need the normal full-screen view.
What the documentation does—and does not—establish
Official Android and manufacturer instructions explain how to enable and operate one-handed mode, but they do not provide an independent success rate, reachability percentage or usage statistic. The practical benefit therefore depends on the phone’s screen shape, software implementation, navigation mode, hand size and the app being used. Treat the feature as a configurable aid rather than a measured guarantee that every control will be reachable.
Menu names, gestures and availability can change with Android releases, Samsung One UI or Motorola software, as well as with region and device model. When a path in this guide is missing, the on-device Settings search and the instructions shown for that model take precedence.

- Confirm that your phone has a Settings search field.
- Search for One-handed mode and note the exact switch label.
- Check the Android version if the result is absent or the instructions mention Android 12.
- Read whether Gesture navigation is required.
- Choose Gesture or Button on Samsung when both are offered.
- Practice the displayed activation motion from the correct edge.
- Remove any case or protector that blocks the gesture area if activation is unreliable.
- Learn the exit action before using the feature in an important task.
