Yes—some Android phones can run supported AI features on the device, so the model can process a prompt without sending it to a remote model server. You can also use some third-party apps to run a downloaded model locally. That can reduce the need to upload sensitive documents, but “offline” does not prove that an app never stores, shares, or routes information elsewhere. The privacy question is about the whole workflow, not just where the model runs.

Can I run an AI assistant offline on my phone?

On supported Android devices, Google’s AICore system service runs Gemini Nano on the phone. Google says some AICore features, including note summarization and smart replies, work without a network connection or in Airplane mode, and that those supported tasks are processed on the phone rather than sent to the cloud. Availability varies by device and manufacturer; AICore is documented for Android 14 and later. Google’s AICore help page explains the service and its supported features.

To check whether AICore is on your phone, open Settings and look under system services for AICore. It may not appear as an ordinary app in a Play Store search. Exact menu names can vary by phone maker and Android version.

Android’s developer documentation lists Gemini Nano capabilities through ML Kit GenAI APIs, including prompt generation, summarization, proofreading, rewriting, image description, and speech recognition. These are capabilities developers can build into apps—not a promise that every phone or app exposes every task. See Android Developers’ Gemini Nano documentation.

Can I ask AI about my documents without uploading them?

Potentially. A local model can answer questions about a document if the app can import or access that file and provide its contents to the model on-device. Some apps also create a searchable index or retrieve relevant passages before generating an answer. The available options and their privacy controls depend on the specific app; support for offline model inference alone does not establish that an app can handle documents locally.

Many third-party local-model apps require an internet connection initially to download a model. After that, a supported task may run offline. For example, LOCAI’s documentation describes downloading and switching among models, including families such as Danube, Phi, Gemma, and Qwen, and adding GGUF models from Hugging Face or local storage. These are project claims, not an independent security audit. Its documentation also says benchmark results may be shared if a user opts into a leaderboard, and feedback may be sent when voluntarily submitted. Details are in LOCAI’s documentation.

On Device AI likewise says its app downloads models separately and lets users select models based on device capability; those statements come from the app’s own website. On Device AI’s product page describes its approach. Model size, speed, and output quality vary with the phone and implementation, so neither app’s description establishes how well a particular model will perform on your device.

Does local AI mean my files never leave my phone?

No. “Runs on device” identifies where a particular inference step happens. It does not answer whether the app uploads a file during import, stores conversation history or derived data, sends diagnostics, uses integrations with access to other information, or switches to a cloud service for some requests. Nor does Airplane-mode behavior for one feature prove that every part of an app is offline.

A useful way to assess privacy is to trace the document through the entire workflow:

  • Access: Which files or folders can the app read, and did you grant broader permissions than the task requires?
  • Processing: Does the app identify the model used for answers and explain whether document parsing, retrieval, and inference occur locally?
  • Storage: Where are imported files, chat history, indexes, embeddings, or summaries kept? Can you delete each of them?
  • Sharing: Does the app offer an account, feedback submission, diagnostic reporting, or an optional leaderboard? Check whether participation is opt-in.
  • Fallbacks and tools: Can a request be sent to a cloud model, or can the assistant use other apps or device data? Look for controls and explanations before enabling integrations.
  • Offline check: After any required model download, disable connectivity and try the exact document task. Confirm the answer is generated and note any feature that stops working.

That final check is useful but limited: it shows that the tested task can work without a connection, not that no information was previously stored or transmitted.

How does a local workflow differ from a cloud chatbot?

A local model can reduce routine transfer of prompt and document content to a remote model service. A cloud chatbot, by contrast, processes information through its provider’s service, subject to that service’s policies and settings. Policies differ by product, so do not assume one company’s notice applies to every chatbot.

For a concrete example, Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice, last updated June 29, 2026, describes information users provide—including prompts, shared files, videos, screen content, photos, imported chats, and browser page content—as well as generated content and app and device information. It lists purposes including providing, maintaining, improving, developing, and personalizing Gemini Apps services. This notice applies to Gemini Apps; it should not be generalized to other AI services. Read the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub before deciding what to share with that product.

Researchers Jonghyun Chung and Sanket Badhe make a related point in their June 8, 2026 preprint, “Local Is Not a Sufficient Privacy Boundary”: an assistant’s privacy depends on more than where inference runs. Its access to files, messages, calendars, screenshots, or notifications; retention of derived information; tool use; telemetry; and possible cloud routing all matter. This is a research framework, not a binding privacy standard.

Which phone can run an AI model locally?

There is no universal minimum phone specification established here. Google says AICore availability depends on the device and manufacturer, despite its Android 14-and-later documentation. Third-party models also vary in size and demand, and a phone’s available memory and performance affect the experience. Check support for your exact phone and the exact app and model rather than relying on a general RAM threshold.

A 2026 Research Square preprint describes PocketLLM, an Android prototype using a quantized Arcee Lite 1.7B model in Q8 GGUF format with llama.cpp and SQLite-backed retrieval. Its authors report a standard 6 GB RAM phone, mean response latency of 6.2 seconds, intent-classification accuracy of 91.5%, and roughly 23% higher performance for retrieval-augmented responses on their domain-specific queries. These are results from that prototype and its 200-query test setup, not general benchmarks for phones, commercial apps, or document questions. The paper is available at Research Square.

What should I check before trusting an offline document assistant?

  1. Identify the exact app and model. Confirm which model answers questions and whether it runs locally, rather than relying only on a “private” or “offline” label.
  2. Check whether document handling is local. Look for separate explanations of file import, parsing, indexing or retrieval, and answer generation.
  3. Review what persists. Find the controls for deleting files, chats, and any indexes or other derived data.
  4. Inspect permissions and integrations. Limit access to what the task needs, and understand any actions the assistant can take through connected apps or device features.
  5. Read the sharing and fallback settings. Check for optional accounts, feedback, diagnostics, leaderboard sharing, and cloud processing when a local model cannot answer.
  6. Test the workflow offline. Download any required model first, then disconnect the phone and try a non-sensitive sample document before relying on the setup.

Vesta illustrates how far an Android project can go: its documentation describes offline document retrieval, conversation history, and device actions. Its maintainers also characterize it as under active development with rough edges, so it is an example of the category rather than evidence of a mature, stable consumer option. See Vesta’s project documentation.
