To make an Audio Overview, create a NotebookLM notebook, add the notes and reference sources you want it to use, then select Generate in the Notebook guide. Select Customize instead when you want to tell the hosts which question to emphasize or how much background the audience has. Listen to the result as a first-pass study aid, then check important claims against the original sources.
Google’s current Help Center uses the name Gemini Notebook, while many accounts and older instructions still say NotebookLM. The exact labels, available formats, languages, usage limits and account entitlements can change, so use the labels shown in your account if they differ from the steps below.
What an Audio Overview is—and what it is not
An Audio Overview is a generated discussion in which AI hosts explain or connect material in a notebook. It is built from the sources you added and any instructions you supplied; it is not an independent survey of everything known about a subject. Google Product Manager Biao Wang described the result in September 2024 as “not a comprehensive or objective view of a topic,” but a reflection of the uploaded sources.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A well-curated notebook can produce a useful orientation, revision session or spoken briefing. A notebook containing one-sided, outdated or contradictory material can produce a fluent discussion that inherits those weaknesses. For medical, legal, financial, safety-critical or otherwise consequential questions, use the audio to locate relevant passages, not as the final authority.

What you need before generating one
- A Google account and access to NotebookLM or Gemini Notebook in your region and edition.
- A notebook created for one subject, assignment, project or question.
- At least one source. A focused set is easier for the hosts to synthesize than an entire unfiltered archive.
- Enough time to review the source text when the recording makes a claim that matters.
- Speakers or headphones if you want to listen privately; no special microphone or physical accessory is required.
Do not assume that every historical source type or feature is available in every account. Google has announced support over time for PDFs, Google Docs, Slides, websites, public YouTube URLs and audio files, followed by additions such as Sheets, images, Drive URLs, PDFs from Drive and Microsoft Word documents (.docx). That is a history of expansion, not a guaranteed current specification. Open the source picker in your account to see what you can add now.
Step-by-step: generate the automatic overview
1. Create a notebook for the question
Open NotebookLM (or Gemini Notebook) and create a new notebook. Name it after the subject rather than after a vague collection, such as “Cell biology midterm” or “Q3 accessibility review.” A specific name helps you keep unrelated material out of the source set.
2. Add your notes and reference material
Use the notebook’s source-adding control to import or attach the notes, documents and links you want the overview to discuss. Add at least one source before trying to generate audio. Include material that directly supports the question: lecture notes alongside the assigned paper, or a product requirements document alongside the relevant design notes.
Before continuing, remove duplicates and sources that are merely adjacent to the topic. If two documents disagree on a key fact, keep both only when comparing the disagreement is part of your goal. Otherwise, resolve the conflict yourself or label the documents clearly so you do not mistake a polished synthesis for a resolution.
3. Open the Notebook guide
In the notebook, open the Notebook guide. Google’s October 2024 instructions describe the next action as choosing Generate for an automatic Audio Overview. Your account may show a newer label or a different location for the same control.
4. Choose Generate
Select Generate and wait for the audio to be prepared. The system uses the notebook’s sources rather than a separate reading list that you have not provided. If your source set is large, preparation can take longer; the precise current time and any limits depend on the account and interface available to you.

5. Start with an attentive listen
Play the overview once without multitasking. Note the claims, definitions, citations or comparisons that you need for your assignment or decision. The audio is a conversation, so a statement can sound confident even when the source is tentative or silent on that point.

6. Return to the source for verification
Pause on consequential claims and locate the supporting passage in the original document. Check names, dates, numbers, quotations, exceptions and the distinction between a source’s evidence and its author’s opinion. If a needed point is absent or distorted, change the source set or your instructions and generate another version.
When to use Customize instead
Customize is for directing the hosts’ focus and expertise level instead of accepting the automatic emphasis. Google’s October 17, 2024 update describes it as a way to adjust what the AI hosts focus on and their expertise level.
Write the instruction in plain language and include three elements:
- Audience: say who is listening and what they already know.
- Focus: identify the question, section, argument or comparison that deserves attention.
- Depth: request a concise orientation, a detailed explanation, definitions, counterarguments or an evidence comparison.
For example, an instruction such as Explain the three main arguments for a first-year student, and spend extra time comparing the evidence gives the hosts a clear audience and emphasis. It is an illustrative instruction, not a guarantee that the recording will follow a fixed script or length.
Useful instruction patterns
- Study preparation: “Define the key terms first, then connect each term to an example from the lecture notes.”
- Document review: “Identify the proposal’s assumptions, the evidence supporting them and the unanswered questions.”
- Comparison: “Contrast the two approaches, naming where the sources agree and where they use different evidence.”
- Executive orientation: “Give a short briefing for a non-specialist, then explain the two risks that require a decision.”
- Critical reading: “Separate claims made by the authors from findings directly supported by the cited data.”
Avoid instructions that ask the hosts to use information not present in the notebook. If you need current context, add an authoritative source that contains it and identify that source’s date.

Audio formats and how to choose one
Google’s feature announcements have introduced several formats. The exact choices shown to you are time-sensitive, so treat this table as a guide to the announced purposes rather than a promise of availability.
| Format | Announced use | Hosts | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deep Dive | Extended discussion of the notebook material | Not stated in the cited announcement | You want a broad, detailed orientation and have time to listen |
| Brief | Short summary | One AI host | You need a quick first pass before deciding what to read |
| Critique | Review of material such as an essay or design document | Two AI hosts | You want weaknesses, assumptions or improvement points surfaced |
| Debate | Discussion of different perspectives found in the sources | Two AI hosts | Your sources contain competing positions and you want them contrasted |
Google announced Deep Dive and the additional Brief, Critique and Debate formats in 2025. Google also said in an August 2025 announcement that supported-language Audio Overviews could be full-length or shorter. Neither announcement establishes that every account has every format, length choice or language today.
Build a source set that produces a useful discussion
Keep the scope narrow enough to guide the hosts
Start with the material needed to answer one question or teach one lesson. A notebook containing a textbook, unrelated meeting notes and several versions of a draft makes it harder to tell which context the discussion is using. Create separate notebooks when the goals are unrelated.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Prefer direct, authoritative material
Add the original paper rather than only a commentary about it; add the approved requirements document rather than an informal summary when reviewing a project. If you use a secondary explanation for accessibility, retain the primary source so you can check what was simplified.
Handle conflicts deliberately
When sources disagree, decide whether the overview should explain the disagreement. If yes, tell the hosts to identify each position and its evidence. If no, remove or replace the weaker material before generating. The audio cannot reliably arbitrate incompatible sources merely because it presents them in a smooth conversation.
Use dated material consciously
Keep publication or revision dates in the source itself when possible. For a changing subject, include a current authoritative document and treat older notes as historical context. The overview reflects the dates and coverage of the sources you supplied.

How to listen actively and check accuracy
- Make a verification list. Write down every number, date, named person, quotation, causal claim and recommendation that you may repeat.
- Locate the passage. Search the original source for the term or claim. Read enough surrounding context to catch qualifications and exceptions.
- Compare across sources. If the hosts combine two documents, confirm that the documents actually support the combined conclusion.
- Mark uncertainty. Keep the source’s language—such as “may,” “estimated” or “in this sample”—instead of upgrading it to certainty in your notes.
- Regenerate when necessary. Add the missing source, remove distracting material or revise the Customize instruction, then create a new overview.
There is no official statistic in the cited Google material showing that Audio Overviews improve learning or recall. Use one as an orientation and revision aid, not as evidence that listening alone replaces reading, practice or expert review.
Listening on a phone and downloading audio
Google’s September 2024 launch announcement said Audio Overviews could be downloaded, and its May 2025 mobile announcement described iOS and Android apps for listening on the go. The current download button, file format, sharing behavior and account restrictions were not established in the available Help Center material. Look for the playback or overflow controls in your own notebook, and check the current Gemini Notebook help pages if an option is missing.
For a commute or walk, download only where your account and the app explicitly provide that control. Do not assume that a downloaded file can be edited, publicly shared or opened by another account. If you need a durable record, keep the original sources and your verification notes rather than relying on the audio file alone.

The Generate or Customize control is missing
Confirm that the notebook contains at least one source and that you are using an account with access to the feature. Interface names and eligibility can differ by region, edition and rollout. Check the current Help Center entry for Gemini Notebook and look for an updated Audio Overview page.
The overview ignores an important section
Check that the section is in an attached source and that the source was imported successfully. Remove unrelated documents, then use Customize to name the exact topic and audience. Generate again instead of assuming the first recording covered every passage.
The discussion sounds too general
Narrow the notebook and request concrete definitions, examples or an evidence comparison. A prompt that names the intended expertise level is more useful than “explain everything.”

The hosts present conflicting claims as if they agree
Tell Customize to identify disagreements and attribute each position to its source. Then inspect the underlying passages. If the conflict is accidental, separate the documents into different notebooks or remove the unreliable source.
The language or length option is unavailable
Google has announced language and shorter/full-length options for supported languages, but the available list and controls can change. Check your account’s language settings and the current picker; do not infer availability from an older tutorial.
There is no download or sharing option
Those controls can vary by app version, account and rollout. Use the in-app controls that are actually present, and consult the current Help Center rather than treating a dated announcement as a guarantee.

Exam or course preparation
Create a notebook for one unit, add the lecture notes and assigned readings, and customize the overview for your level. Use the recording to identify weak areas, then study the cited passages and test yourself without the audio.
Research orientation
Add a small set of foundational papers or reports. Ask for the central question, methods and unresolved issues, then verify every important characterization in the papers before citing it.
Project or design review
Use the Critique format when it is available and include the current specification, decision log and design document. Ask the hosts to separate explicit requirements from assumptions and open risks.
Comparing viewpoints
Use Debate when available and the notebook genuinely contains distinct positions. Include sources representing each position and ask for attribution and evidence, rather than asking the hosts to declare a winner.

Use Brief for a short orientation before a meeting. Treat it as preparation: open the source documents for any number, commitment or recommendation you plan to repeat.
A repeatable quality checklist
- The notebook has one clear subject or question.
- Every source is relevant, identifiable and appropriate for the decision.
- Contradictory material is either intentionally compared or removed.
- The chosen format matches the goal: orientation, critique or contrasting perspectives.
- Customize names the audience, focus and desired depth when the automatic version is not enough.
- Important claims have been checked against the original passages.
- You have recorded the source dates and any uncertainty before sharing the information.
- You have checked the current account controls for language, length, mobile playback, download and sharing.
The most dependable workflow is therefore iterative: prepare a focused source set, generate, listen for the claims that matter, verify them in context, and regenerate only when the sources or instructions need to change. That keeps the convenience of a spoken discussion without mistaking it for a complete or objective account.
