If your application already reports data to New Relic, the New Relic CLI lets you find the correct application, run NRQL-oriented investigations, select machine-readable output, and add deployment context without leaving a terminal. It does not collect telemetry itself: you still need an instrumented application, a New Relic account, and an appropriate user key.
This guide follows a practical workflow: install the CLI, create a region-aware profile, resolve the application’s identifiers, query the data your account actually contains, and correlate results with logs and deployment markers.
What the New Relic CLI does—and what it does not
The CLI is a command-line interface for New Relic platform features and workflow automation. New Relic’s CLI Reference describes its purpose this way: “The New Relic CLI enables the integration of New Relic into your existing workflows.” It is not an agent, SDK, or telemetry collector. Installing it on a workstation or build runner does not cause an application to send data.
Before starting, verify that the application is already instrumented and reporting to the account you intend to inspect. The CLI can query and manage platform data, but it cannot create missing PageView, transaction, log, or custom attributes retroactively.

Prerequisites and the identifiers you will use
Have these items ready:
- A New Relic account and its account ID.
- A New Relic user key with permissions appropriate for the operations you will perform. Use the least privilege your organization allows.
- The account region:
us,eu, orjp. - An instrumented application that has reported data.
- The application name as it appears in New Relic.
- A shell where you can install the CLI and keep credentials out of shared history and source control.
Three identifiers are easy to confuse:

Use the GUID when a command asks for an entity identifier and the application ID when the command explicitly asks for an application ID. They are not interchangeable.
Install the CLI on your operating system
Installation methods can change, so confirm the current package name and release instructions in New Relic’s installation documentation before automating setup. The documented approaches are:

macOS
- Ensure Homebrew is available to the user account that will run the CLI.
- Run
brew install newrelic-cli. - Check that the executable is on your
PATHwithnewrelic --help.
Linux
- Install and configure Snapcraft if it is not already present.
- Run
sudo snap install newrelic-cli. - Run
newrelic --helpto confirm that the shell can find the executable.
Windows
- Install Scoop if your organization permits it.
- Add the bucket that contains
newrelic-cli, following the current Windows instructions from New Relic. - Install the package and open a new shell if Scoop updated your
PATH. - Run
newrelic --help.
Downloaded binaries and packages
Use a prebuilt binary, .deb, .rpm, or MSI when package-manager installation is unavailable or when you need a pinned artifact in a build image. Record the CLI version in that image and review release notes before upgrading; command flags and supported workflows are volatile.

A profile stores credentials and settings so you can switch between accounts without rewriting every command. The documented pattern below creates a profile named tutorial and then makes it the default:
newrelic profiles add --profile tutorial --apiKey YOUR_NEW_RELIC_USER_KEY -r YOUR_REGION
newrelic profiles default --profile tutorialReplace YOUR_NEW_RELIC_USER_KEY with a key created for your organization and YOUR_REGION with us, eu, or jp. Do not publish a real key, place it in a committed script, or paste it into a shell command that will be retained in a shared history file.
Use profiles for account switching
Create separate profiles when you work across production and non-production accounts or across regions. Select the intended profile as the default before a session, or pass the profile option where supported. A profile change affects subsequent commands, so make the active profile visible in your shell prompt or runbook when mistakes would be costly.

Supply an account ID explicitly
The CLI reference documents a global --accountId option. It also documents NEW_RELIC_ACCOUNT_ID as an environment variable that can override the account ID option. Decide on one convention for interactive work and automation, then make the selected account explicit in scripts so a different shell environment cannot silently redirect a query.

Search by account ID and application name:
newrelic apm application search --accountId YOUR_ACCOUNT_ID --name NAME_OF_YOUR_APPThe documented JSON response includes fields such as accountId, applicationId, guid, name, reporting, and entity type and domain fields. Save the matching GUID and application ID for later commands, and check reporting before assuming that an empty query means the application has no data.
If several applications match
- Use the full displayed name rather than a short fragment.
- Confirm the returned account ID and region.
- Check the reporting status and entity domain.
- Compare the result with the application’s known environment or deployment naming convention.
A name match alone is not enough when staging and production use similar labels.
Understand the newrelic nrql command group
The CLI reference identifies newrelic nrql as the command group for interacting with the New Relic Database. Its global --format option accepts JSON, Text, or YAML, with JSON documented as the default.

The reference page points to detailed command documentation rather than spelling out every query flag. Run newrelic nrql --help and the help for its query subcommand on the installed version before copying a command into a script. That check is important because invocation syntax can change between releases.
Use NRQL to ask focused telemetry questions
Paste the following NRQL examples into the query option shown by your installed CLI version. They illustrate query shapes documented by New Relic; they are not a guarantee that every account contains the named event types or attributes.

Count unique sessions over the last week
SELECT uniqueCount(session) FROM PageView SINCE 1 week agoThis asks how many distinct session values were recorded on PageView events during the preceding week. If your instrumentation does not send PageView events or a session attribute, the result will not answer that question.
Compare with the previous week
SELECT uniqueCount(session) FROM PageView SINCE 1 week ago COMPARE WITH 1 week agoCOMPARE WITH adds a prior-period comparison. Keep the time windows and filters equivalent when comparing environments or accounts; otherwise, a difference may reflect query construction rather than application behavior.
Graph daily PageView volume
SELECT count(*) FROM PageView SINCE 1 week ago TIMESERIES AUTOTIMESERIES AUTO lets New Relic choose an interval suited to the selected range. Use the resulting sequence to spot gaps, spikes, or a gradual change instead of relying only on a single aggregate.

Break mobile sessions out by operating-system version
SELECT uniqueCount(session) FROM PageView WHERE deviceType = 'Mobile' SINCE 1 week ago FACET osVersionFACET osVersion creates one series or result group per observed operating-system version. Attribute names and values depend on your instrumentation, so confirm that deviceType and osVersion are actually present before interpreting an empty result.
Calculate Apdex for one customer
SELECT apdex(duration, t: 0.4) FROM Transaction WHERE customerName = 'Example Customer' SINCE 1 week agoThis uses a custom customerName attribute and an Apdex threshold of 0.4. Replace the attribute value and time range with values that match your data model and service-level question. A custom attribute that was never reported cannot be recovered by changing the query.
A repeatable terminal investigation
- Confirm scope. Note the active profile, account ID, region, application name, and time zone used by the incident.
- Resolve identity. Run the APM application search and retain the matching GUID and application ID.
- Start with an aggregate. Use a count or unique count over a bounded interval to establish whether data is present.
- Add a time series. Use
TIMESERIES AUTOto see when a change occurred. - Compare an equivalent period. Add
COMPARE WITHonly when the baseline period and filters are comparable. - Facet the suspected dimension. Break out a version, device type, region, or other attribute only after confirming that the attribute exists.
- Switch output format for the task. Use Text for reading and JSON or YAML when another command will consume the result.
- Record the exact query. Save the time window, filters, profile, and CLI version with the incident notes so another engineer can reproduce the scope.
Add logs when a metric needs an explanation
The Logs UI supports filtering and NRQL queries over log events. Logs are a related workflow, not an automatic consequence of installing the CLI. Your application or logging pipeline must forward logs to New Relic.

New Relic’s APM logs-in-context documentation describes agents decorating logs with metadata such as span.id, trace.id, hostname, entity.guid, and entity.name. Current APM agent versions document these capabilities as enabled by default, but agent behavior and deployment configuration are not identical everywhere. Confirm the agent version and forwarding setup before relying on a field.

Correlate a suspicious interval
- Use the NRQL time series to identify the first interval in which the symptom appears.
- Query logs for that same interval rather than searching an unbounded history.
- Filter by the application’s entity name or GUID when those fields are present.
- Use trace or span identifiers to move from an aggregate symptom to an individual request.
A missing log field can indicate configuration or agent differences; it does not prove that the application generated no corresponding request.

A deployment marker gives the telemetry timeline a point that you can compare with a change. It is useful context, but a marker alone does not prove that the deployment caused a performance or error change.
APM deployment command
The getting-started workflow shows a deployment command using an application ID and revision:
newrelic apm deployment create --applicationId YOUR_APPLICATION_ID --revision YOUR_REVISIONUse the application ID returned by the APM search, not the GUID, when following this documented form. Include a revision value that your release process can identify consistently.

newrelic changeTracking createThe documented change-tracking workflow requires CLI version 0.104.5 or higher. Check the installed version and the current command help for the required fields before running it. Change tracking can provide a broader timeline of operational changes than a single deployment marker, but it still supplies correlation context rather than causal proof.
Query entity relationships when a service depends on another entity
New Relic documents querying entity and relationship data alongside telemetry with NRQL. The documented retention period for entity relationship data is 24 hours. Treat that as a short investigation window: if a dependency question matters, capture the relevant result while the relationship data is available rather than assuming it will remain queryable indefinitely.
Troubleshoot common failures
The shell cannot find newrelic
- Open a new terminal after installation so package-manager path changes are loaded.
- Check the executable location and your
PATH. - On Windows, verify that Scoop’s shims directory is available to the current shell.
- If you installed a downloaded binary, place it in a directory intended for executables and invoke it with an explicit path while diagnosing.
Authentication or authorization fails
- Confirm that the active profile is the one containing the intended user key.
- Check the account region; a key and account in different regions can produce confusing failures.
- Verify that the key has permission for the command, not merely for viewing the web UI.
- Generate or rotate credentials through your organization’s approved process instead of embedding a replacement key in a script.
The application search returns nothing
- Check the account ID and region.
- Use the exact application name shown in New Relic.
- Confirm that the application has reported recently and that the instrumentation is connected to this account.
- Search for naming variants used by staging, production, or regional deployments.
The NRQL result is empty
- Verify that the event type, attribute name, and attribute value exist in your data.
- Widen or adjust the time window only after checking that the application was reporting during the original interval.
- Remove facets and custom filters temporarily to identify which condition eliminates the rows.
- Check whether the selected account and region match the application returned by the search.
The query command in a script breaks after an upgrade
Run newrelic nrql --help and the relevant subcommand help against the installed release. The CLI reference’s detailed command documentation is maintained separately, and flags can change. Pin a known CLI version in automation, then review upgrades deliberately.

- Use a dedicated, least-privilege user key for automation and rotate it according to your organization’s policy.
- Keep secrets in the CI system’s secret store or an approved credential helper, not in shell history, source files, or command output.
- Set the profile and account ID explicitly in production jobs.
- Prefer JSON when a parser will consume results, and validate the schema before assuming a field exists.
- Bound every query with a deliberate time range to limit accidental large scans and ambiguous incident notes.
- Log the CLI version, profile name, account ID, application identifier, query text, and time window for reproducibility, while redacting credentials.
- Treat deployment and change markers as timeline evidence. Combine them with time-series behavior, logs, traces, and a plausible mechanism before claiming causation.
What this workflow cannot establish by itself
The CLI does not establish your account’s pricing, entitlements, general telemetry-retention policy, or which event types your application reports. Those details vary by account, instrumentation, region, and configuration. The examples above also do not promise that every account has PageView events, session values, mobile attributes, customer attributes, logs-in-context metadata, or change-tracking access.
Use the commands to inspect the data that is actually present, verify the current syntax for your installed release, and keep region, profile, identifier, and time-window choices visible whenever you share a result.
