You can stream Netflix on an iPhone, download eligible titles for offline viewing, and adjust playback options in the app. What you can do depends on your iOS version, iPhone model, Netflix plan and the particular title. Start by checking compatibility, then use the relevant steps below.
How do you install Netflix on an iPhone?
Netflix currently says its latest iPhone and iPad app requires iOS or iPadOS 18 or later. If you previously downloaded Netflix, Netflix says you may be able to redownload it on a device running iOS 12 or later. These are different cases, and an older device may not support the current app or every feature. Check the Netflix iPhone and iPad usage guide and the App Store listing for your specific device before relying on legacy support.

- Open the App Store and search for Netflix.
- Tap Get or the cloud download icon.
- Open Netflix and sign in with your Netflix account.
App installation eligibility is not the same as download eligibility: Netflix says downloads generally work on iOS 12 or later, while titles in the ad-supported experience require iOS or iPadOS 16 or later.

Start a show or movie and tap the screen to reveal the playback controls. Use the audio and subtitles options there to select an available language or subtitle track. This selects what plays; it does not change the visual style of captions. For subtitle appearance on Apple devices, Netflix directs users to Apple Support.

Picture-in-picture
Netflix says picture-in-picture is available only on certain iPhone and iPad models and on ad-free plans. Availability is not guaranteed just because the app is installed; it depends on the device and plan.
Resolution and HDR
Netflix’s current help guide lists Full HD 1080p support for certain models beginning with iPhone X, and HDR support for certain models beginning with iPhone 8. These are model-specific capabilities, not promises that every title will play at those settings. Low Power Mode or cellular use can also prevent HDR playback even when a title is marked HDR. Check Netflix’s device and playback guidance for current compatibility.

Spatial Audio
Spatial Audio is optional and conditional: Netflix requires iOS or iPadOS 14.6 or later, a compatible device, the Premium plan, and AirPods Pro or AirPods Max. Netflix says downloaded titles play in stereo rather than Spatial Audio.

Netflix describes the option this way: “You can set Netflix to automatically play the next episode in a series.” To change it for a profile:

- Open Netflix and choose a profile.
- Tap My Netflix, then tap the profile name.
- Tap Manage Profiles and choose the profile you want to edit.
- Turn off Autoplay Next Episode, then tap Done.
If the change does not appear to take effect, Netflix suggests switching to another profile and back, or signing out and signing in again. The app’s route and labels may change; see Netflix’s autoplay settings instructions if your screen differs.
Can you download Netflix movies and shows to watch offline?
Yes, when a title is eligible. In Netflix, look for the Download icon on a movie or an episode, or browse the app’s download area. You can download a movie or individual episodes, then play them from Downloads. Not every title is downloadable; if a specific title has no Download icon, Netflix says it is not available for download.

- Open the movie or episode and tap its Download icon.
- When the download finishes, open Downloads in the app to play it offline.
A download is stored on the device used to download it, not made available automatically on your other devices. Downloads can expire, and some titles have annual download limits. Netflix’s help article also describes a plan-dependent limit of up to 100 active downloads per device; do not assume that cap applies identically to every plan or region. Check the current Netflix download guidance for your account and title.
Why can’t you download some Netflix shows or movies?
- The title is not eligible. If there is no Download icon, that title cannot be downloaded.
- Your iOS version or app may need an update. Netflix advises updating the app and checking for the latest iOS or iPadOS available for your device. Remember that download support and the latest-app installation requirement are not identical.
- The title or download may have expired or reached a limit. Downloads have expiration rules, and some titles have annual limits.
- The app may have a specific error. Look up the exact error code in Netflix Help rather than applying a guessed fix. Netflix’s iPhone and iPad download troubleshooting covers update and reinstall steps.
Reinstalling the app is a later troubleshooting step, not a harmless reset: it deletes downloads stored on the iPhone and signs you out. Make sure you know your account sign-in details before doing it.

Can you watch Netflix on an external display or use accessories?
Netflix says video output from iPhone and iPad works through certain compatible Apple-specific connection kits, but its guide does not provide a model-by-model adapter list. Check compatibility for your exact iPhone and connection kit before buying an accessory.
For Spatial Audio, Netflix names AirPods Pro and AirPods Max, but that feature also requires a compatible device, iOS or iPadOS 14.6 or later, and the Premium plan. It is an optional listening feature, not a requirement for watching Netflix.
