Multiverse-Portals lets a Bukkit-style Minecraft server send players between Multiverse worlds, named portals, anchors, and exact coordinates. Install it alongside Multiverse-Core, select a portal-shaped region with the built-in wand or WorldEdit, then create a destination with /mvp create. If a portal does not work, check both portal-use and destination-world permissions before changing the build.
What Multiverse-Portals does
Multiverse-Portals is an add-on for Multiverse-Core. It creates teleport regions that can send players to Multiverse destinations rather than relying on Minecraft’s normal Nether portal behavior. A destination can be another world, a named portal, an anchor, or an exact position.
The portal’s visible frame is only a way to show players where to enter. You can build it from any block material, and the opening does not have to contain vanilla Nether portal blocks. The selected region can even become invisible after you remove the frame, although an invisible entrance is usually harder for players to discover and maintain.
Prepare the server
Install the required Multiverse plugins
Install and enable Multiverse-Core and the Multiverse-Portals add-on on the server. Restart or reload using the process your server platform supports, then check the server log and in-game plugin list to confirm that both plugins loaded. Multiverse-Portals depends on Multiverse-Core; creating portal regions before the add-on has loaded will not work.

Because command names and options can change between releases, use /mvp help on the running server as the final check for syntax. The current basic-usage documentation is newer than the mirrored command and permissions references, so the installed version’s help output takes precedence if they differ.
Choose a portal location and destination model
Decide whether players should arrive anywhere in a world, at a fixed coordinate, or at another named portal. A world destination is the simplest choice for one-way travel. A pair of named portals is easier to reason about when you are building an explicit entrance and return route.

Use the command at the location where the destination should be recorded, when supported by the installed version. |
World and portal names in the command must match the names known to Multiverse. Record the names before creating links so a typo does not send players to an unintended destination or produce a command error.
Create your first portal
1. Build a frame or region
Construct a visible frame around the area players should enter. Any block type is acceptable; the opening does not need to be filled with Nether portal blocks. The selected volume is what matters, not the material. Keep the region compact and check that it does not overlap another portal or include nearby floors, walls, or redstone areas unintentionally.
2. Obtain a selection tool
For the built-in selection tool, run:
/mvp wandWhen WorldEdit is installed and your server permits its use, run:
//wandThe Multiverse wand is a wooden axe by default when WorldEdit is not being used. WorldEdit may be more convenient on a server that already standardizes on it, but it adds a dependency and exposes its own selection permissions. The built-in wand avoids that extra dependency.

3. Select the two corners
With either wand, left-click one corner of the intended region and right-click the opposite corner. Include the complete volume through which a player must walk, not just the frame blocks. For a doorway, that normally means the interior opening from floor to top; for a larger room, include the full area intended to trigger teleportation.
Inspect the selection before creating the portal. An unexpectedly large volume usually means that one corner was selected far away or an old selection was reused. Correct the corners before continuing; a mistaken region can capture areas that were never meant to teleport.
4. Create the portal and choose its destination
The general command form is:
/mvp create {NAME} [DESTINATION]Replace {NAME} with a unique portal name and use one of the documented destination formats.
/mvp create newportal w:worldname
/mvp create newportal e:world:23,43,1
/mvp create newportal p:otherportalThe first command sends entrants to a world, the second records an exact position, and the third targets another Multiverse portal. If your installed version supports the location shortcut, here can be used as the destination when you run the command at the intended arrival point:
/mvp create newportal hereUse a name that describes the route, such as spawn_to_survival or arena_exit. Clear names make permission nodes and later maintenance easier.
Link two portals after they already exist
You do not have to create both ends at the same time. Select an existing portal by name and change its destination:

/mvp select portal_a
/mvp modify destination p:portal_bThis is useful when the second portal was built later or when you initially pointed the first portal at a world and later decided to use a named entrance. Repeat the process in the opposite direction if you want a round trip:
/mvp select portal_b
/mvp modify destination p:portal_aA one-way link and a paired link are different maintenance choices. A world destination remains simple when all players should arrive through the same world entry behavior. Portal-to-portal links make the two ends explicit, which is useful for hubs, arenas, and return routes, but both names must remain valid.
Give players permission to use a portal
Portal access permission
By default, only players with this node can use a portal:
multiverse.portal.access.<portalname>Replace <portalname> with the portal’s name. Portal names are case-insensitive, but use one consistent spelling in your permission configuration so staff can identify the intended route easily.
Destination-world permission
When world-access enforcement is enabled, the player also needs access to the destination world:
multiverse.access.<worldname>A player can therefore have portal permission and still be denied travel because the destination world is not permitted. Check both nodes whenever staff report that a portal works for an administrator but not for ordinary players.

Allow everyone to use every portal
If the server intentionally wants unrestricted portal use, the current guide documents:
/mvp config enforce-portal-access falseAn older permissions reference also lists:
/mv conf enforceaccess falseThese commands are not interchangeable guarantees across versions. Run /mvp help and use the syntax exposed by the installed release. Disabling enforcement globally removes the per-portal access gate, but it does not automatically resolve destination-world restrictions or other server permission systems.
Allow vehicles and other entities
Players are the default travelers. Boats, minecarts, and mobs require additional configuration. Enable the global settings:
/mvp config teleport-vehicles true
/mvp config teleport-entities trueThese global vehicle and entity settings require a full server restart. After enabling them, opt each portal into non-player transfers:
/mvp modify <portal-name> teleport-non-players trueRun the per-portal command for every portal that should accept vehicles or mobs. Enabling the global options alone does not make every existing portal transfer non-player entities.
Test entity travel in a safe area before opening the route to players. A portal intended only for pedestrians can remain configured with non-player transfers disabled, reducing accidental minecart or boat movement through a hub.

Inspect and modify an existing portal
Select the portal before changing it:
/mvp select PORTALWhere the command supports it, you can also pass -p PORTAL to identify the target directly. The editable properties documented by the command reference include the owner, destination, location, price, currency, and safety. Use the property-specific form shown by /mvp help for your installed version rather than assuming an option from an older reference applies unchanged.

For example, destination changes use:
/mvp modify destination p:portal_bKeep a written list of portal names, destinations, and permission assignments. That small inventory prevents a renamed or removed destination from silently breaking a larger hub.
Debug a portal that does not work
Use debug mode before changing the build
Enable portal debugging with:
/mvp debug onIn debug mode, the plugin shows portal details instead of teleporting you. This helps identify whether the selected region belongs to the portal you expect and whether its destination is wrong. Turn it off when finished:
/mvp debug offFollow this troubleshooting order
- Confirm the plugin loaded. Check that Multiverse-Core and Multiverse-Portals are enabled and that
/mvp helpresponds. - Check the selection. Re-select the two corners and look for an accidentally huge volume or a region that does not include the player’s path.
- Check the destination spelling. Verify the world, portal, or coordinate in the portal’s details. A portal-to-portal destination must refer to an existing portal.
- Check portal permission. Grant
multiverse.portal.access.<portalname>to the affected player or group. - Check world permission. If world-access enforcement is active, grant
multiverse.access.<worldname>for the destination world. - Check entity settings. If a boat, minecart, or mob fails while players succeed, enable the global options, restart the server, and set
teleport-non-players trueon that portal. - Use debug mode. Inspect the portal’s recorded destination and location rather than repeatedly walking into an unverified region.
Common symptoms and causes

Remove a portal safely
Delete a portal with:
/mvp remove NAMEBreaking the frame does not delete the configured portal. This distinction matters if you rebuild an entrance: the old region can remain active even after its visible blocks are gone. Also note that removing a portal breaks portals linked to it, so inspect dependent routes before deletion. Recreate or relink those destinations after the removal.
Operational choices for a reliable portal network
Use the smallest practical region
A compact selection reduces accidental activation and makes later rebuilding easier. Select only the doorway, platform, or room players are meant to cross. Recheck the volume whenever the portal behaves as though it is triggering from an unexpected location.

Choose world links or paired links deliberately
- Use a world destination when the route is conceptually “go to this world” and a single destination entry is sufficient.
- Use portal-to-portal links when you need named endpoints, a controlled return route, or a hub with clearly managed entrances.
- Use exact coordinates when arrival must be repeatable at a specific location rather than wherever the world’s normal entry logic places the player.
Separate staff tools from player access
WorldEdit can make selection convenient, but it also introduces another permission surface. On a server where only a small administration group builds portals, the built-in wand may be easier to restrict. On a server already using WorldEdit for region work, standardizing on its wand can reduce training and tool switching. Whichever method you choose, keep portal creation and modification permissions limited to trusted staff.
Document names and routes
Portal names appear in permission nodes and portal-to-portal destinations. Maintain a simple route list containing each portal name, its selected area, destination type, destination value, and intended users. Update that list when you remove or rename a portal so linked routes and permissions do not point to obsolete names.
Version and command compatibility
The basic-usage documentation was updated on September 28, 2026, while mirrored command-reference and permissions pages show last-modified dates of July 27, 2019, and July 9, 2018. Treat the newer basic-usage syntax as the preferred guidance, and verify older commands—especially the legacy access-enforcement form—in the help output from your installed plugin version. These dates describe documentation metadata, not a performance guarantee or a promise that every command is unchanged across releases.
