Mobile data—also called cellular data—is internet access through a mobile carrier’s network instead of Wi-Fi. Turn it on in your phone’s network settings, select the right SIM if you use more than one, and check both your device and carrier account to understand usage. Before traveling, confirm whether your plan includes roaming in your destination; the costs and rules vary by carrier, plan, and location.
What mobile data does—and how to turn it on
When mobile or cellular data is enabled, your phone can use the carrier network for services such as browsing, email, maps, social apps, and video calls when Wi-Fi is unavailable. With cellular data off on an iPhone, internet services use Wi-Fi only. Whether carrier use costs extra depends on your plan.
On iPhone
- Open Settings > Cellular (the label may vary by region).
- Turn on Cellular Data. You can also manage which apps are allowed to use it on that screen.
Apple documents these controls in its iPhone cellular data settings guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOn a Google Pixel
- Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
- Enable Mobile data and select the SIM to use for data.
Google’s documented Pixel setup allows only one SIM to be the default for mobile data. Android menus can differ by phone and OS version; consult the phone maker’s instructions if the labels do not match. See Google’s Pixel mobile-network instructions.

How to check and control data usage
Streaming video, especially in HD, can use data quickly; maps, social media, music, browsing, and video calls also consume it. Use the phone’s per-app figures to identify what is using data, then check your carrier’s account or app before making decisions about billing. Apple says the carrier is the most accurate source for current-period usage.
- iPhone: In Settings > Cellular, review app usage and disable cellular access for apps that do not need it. Low Data Mode can pause automatic updates and background tasks when the phone is not on Wi-Fi.
- Pixel: Depending on the device and software version, SIM settings may show app data usage and offer a data warning or limit.
There is no universal monthly data allowance that suits everyone. As UK guidance, Ofcom said on August 25, 2026, that mobile packages generally start between 1GB and 10GB a month, a range that may suit lower-use customers; it is not a universal recommendation. Ofcom also cautions that unlimited plans can cost more than necessary and may still have fair-use, speed, or travel limits. See Ofcom’s guide to choosing a mobile package.

- Coverage and performance: Check service at home, work, along your commute, and at destinations you visit. A coverage map is a starting point, not a promise of indoor reception or consistent speed.
- Allowance and what happens when it runs out: Check overage charges, speed reductions, and any fair-use cap attached to an “unlimited” plan.
- Total cost: Include upfront payments, monthly charges, add-ons, price changes, contract length, and exit costs.
- Roaming: Check the destinations included, roaming data allowance, usage caps, and add-on prices.
- Plan structure: If you already own a suitable phone, compare SIM-only options. Prepaid or pay-as-you-go may suit light or variable use, though the cost per unit can be higher.
Ofcom describes phone-included monthly plans, SIM-only plans, and pay-as-you-go as common UK options. It notes that SIM-only can be cheaper if you already have a suitable phone, while pay-as-you-go can avoid a long contract but may cost more per unit. These are UK consumer comparisons, not guarantees about pricing elsewhere. Ofcom says monthly plans that include a phone commonly last 12, 18, or 24 months, with exceptions; check the specific agreement.

Coverage, signal, and 5G
Coverage means a network is reported as available; performance describes how well a connection works where it is available. Neither a coverage map nor a 5G icon guarantees a particular speed or reliable indoor service. Your phone, plan, carrier, local signal, and settings all affect the connection.
In the United States, the FCC National Broadband Map lets users filter mobile coverage by 3G, 4G, and two 5G levels. The map reflects provider-reported outdoor or in-vehicle coverage and does not show indoor coverage. Its categories are not observed-speed guarantees. The FCC also accepts challenges to coverage based on outdoor or in-vehicle speed tests. These are U.S.-specific resources, not a global map. See the FCC map instructions.

5G is a network technology that can be faster than 4G, but access depends on a compatible phone, plan, carrier, local signal, and settings. Check that your plan includes 5G and your handset supports it; availability and settings can also depend on the phone model, region, and carrier.
What roaming means and how to avoid unexpected charges
Roaming lets your phone connect to a cellular network outside your provider’s own covered area. Whether it is included or costs extra depends on your carrier, plan, destination, and usage. Before travel, ask your carrier what applies at your destination and what happens when an included allowance is exhausted.

On iPhone, Apple recommends checking with your carrier before travel. You can turn off Data Roaming to prevent roaming data use; if you arrange a roaming plan, follow the provider’s instructions to enable it. On a dual-SIM phone, make sure you are changing the roaming setting for the intended line. See Apple’s guide to mobile data roaming options.
Alternatives for travel
A travel eSIM, local physical SIM, or prepaid plan may be an alternative to roaming. Whether it works for you depends on device eSIM support, whether the phone is carrier-unlocked, destination availability, data amount and expiry, speed rules, and whether calls and texts are included. A local SIM or prepaid option can help avoid roaming charges, but check the full terms for other fees and limits; the CRTC outlines these possibilities in its international roaming guidance. Apple’s statement that selected providers offer data plans in over 190 countries, regions, and territories applies specifically to compatible iPads—not to every eSIM, device, or provider.
Why mobile data may not be working
Check settings first, then the SIM, signal, and account. Menu names vary across devices and software versions.

- Check the data SIM: If you use dual SIMs, verify that the intended line is selected for mobile data. The voice or text line may be different.
- Check signal and account status: Your plan may have run out of data, be suspended, or lack coverage where you are. Check the carrier account or contact the carrier.
- If traveling, confirm roaming terms: Check the destination and plan before enabling roaming on the relevant SIM to avoid unexpected charges.
- Refresh the connection: Follow your carrier’s troubleshooting instructions. For roaming issues, Apple suggests turning Airplane Mode on for about 30 seconds, then turning it off.
- Check APN settings only if directed by the carrier: An Access Point Name (APN) profile helps a device reach carrier data services. Settings are often configured automatically; incorrect values can stop data from working. Get exact settings from your carrier rather than copying generic values. T-Mobile explains APNs in its APN guide.
- Contact the carrier if the problem remains: Account status, service provisioning, coverage, and billing records cannot be resolved from phone settings alone.
When a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot makes sense
A portable mobile Wi-Fi hotspot can connect several devices through cellular service. The device itself does not necessarily include connectivity: check carrier support, cellular compatibility and bands, whether it is unlocked, battery needs, and the data plan required. The FCC identifies mobile Wi-Fi hotspots as mobile data devices.
