To prevent stripped screws, use the exact bit style and size that matches the recess, replace worn bits, keep the driver square to the screw, and start at low speed with controlled pressure. On a drill/driver, select drive mode and set the adjustable clutch low enough to stop overdriving; on an impact driver, choose a controlled drive mode and use short trigger pulls. If the bit slips, stop and correct the fit or alignment instead of pushing harder.
Milwaukee’s manuals and product information support those fundamentals, but no bit or tool guarantees a strip-free result. Material hardness, screw quality, access, angle and operator control still determine the outcome.
Why screw heads strip
A screw head strips when the driver bit loses reliable contact with the recess and rounds its driving surfaces. The usual causes are a mismatched bit, an incorrect size, a worn tip, a driver held at an angle, excessive speed, too much torque, or a screw that is already damaged. Hard or thick material can also demand more torque than the bit can transmit cleanly.

Stripping is different from a screw simply stopping before it is fully seated. A clutch that slips, a stalled motor, or a bit that cams out can indicate that the setting or technique needs adjustment. Continuing to pull the trigger after the bit starts slipping usually makes the recess worse.

Match the bit to the screw recess
Start by identifying the recess in the screw head. Select the same drive style and the size that fills the recess without forcing it. Milwaukee’s operator manual specifically advises using the proper bit style and size.
| Screw recess | Bit to select | Fit check |
|---|---|---|
| Phillips | Phillips bit in the marked size, such as PH2 when the screw calls for PH2 | The bit should sit fully in the cross and resist rocking before the trigger is pulled. |
| Square/Robertson | Square bit matching the recess size | The tip should engage the four driving faces rather than touch only the corners. |
| Torx/star | Torx bit matching the stamped or specified size | All star-shaped lobes should be filled; do not substitute a nearby size. |
| Other proprietary or specialty recesses | The corresponding specialty driver bit | Use the manufacturer-specified profile and size; a visually similar tip may not transmit torque safely. |
Do not treat a Phillips #2 as a universal bit. Milwaukee’s SHOCKWAVE Impact Duty 2-inch PH2 Power Bit, model 48-32-4462, is appropriate only when the fastener actually takes a PH2 tip. Before use, inspect the tip for rounding, chipped edges, twisting or visible wear. A damaged bit can slip even when its nominal size is correct.
Bit choices for common driving situations
| Choice | Drive style and size | Length or access consideration | Tool compatibility | What is established |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Milwaukee SHOCKWAVE Impact Duty 2-inch PH2 Power Bit (48-32-4462) | PH2 Phillips | 2-inch bit length; useful when the extra reach suits the work | Milwaukee lists it for drill drivers and impact drivers | Milwaukee says its customized tip geometry is intended to reduce stripping. This is a manufacturer description, not an independent performance guarantee. |
| Short standard bit | Match the screw’s exact style and size | Shorter reach can improve control in open access | Use only if the bit’s construction is suitable for the driver being used | Pack size and specific construction were not stated in the supplied product information. |
| Long or extended bit | Match the screw’s exact style and size | Helps reach recessed or obstructed fasteners, but can magnify wobble if alignment is poor | Use with a compatible holder or chuck | No universal strip-resistance rating was established. |
Choose the bit for the screw first, then choose length and construction for access and the driver. A longer bit is not automatically safer; keeping the axis straight matters more.

- Identify the recess. Read the screw packaging or inspect the head to determine whether it is Phillips, square, Torx or another profile. Confirm the size rather than selecting by appearance alone.
- Inspect the bit. Reject a tip that is rounded, chipped, twisted, contaminated with debris or visibly undersized. Replacing a worn bit is safer than compensating with more trigger pressure.
- Seat the bit before starting. Push the tip fully into the recess. Hold the driver axis in line with the screw so the bit is not levering against one side of the head.
- Start gently. Use a low trigger speed and steady forward pressure. Let the bit establish contact before increasing speed.
- Watch the engagement. If the bit climbs out, chatters or slips, release the trigger immediately. Recheck the size, style, alignment and condition of both bit and screw.
- Control the final turns. Ease off the trigger as the head approaches the surface. Stop when the fastener is seated to the required depth rather than continuing until the driver stalls.
- Reassess resistance. If the screw will not advance, do not simply increase force. A pilot hole, a different clutch setting, a new bit or a different fastener may be needed.
Setting up a Milwaukee drill/driver
A drill/driver gives you two separate controls that matter here: the mode selector and the adjustable clutch. Select the screw-driving or drive mode, not the drilling mode, before driving a fastener.

Set the clutch conservatively
Begin with a lower clutch setting and test it on a piece of scrap material similar to the workpiece. Increase the setting only enough to seat the screw. Milwaukee’s operator manual for Cat. No. 2703-20 explains that the adjustable clutch is designed to slip at a preset torque “to prevent driving screw too deep into different materials and to prevent damage to the screw or tool.”
The same manual cautions: “Because the settings shown in the table are only a guide, use a piece of scrap material to test the different clutch settings before driving screws into the workpiece.” The number printed on a collar is therefore a starting point, not a universal torque value for every screw, material or bit.
Use low speed for screw driving
Choose the drill/driver’s low speed range for driving screws. Low speed gives the clutch and your trigger finger more control and reduces the chance of spinning past the point where the head is seated. Keep pressure steady rather than leaning harder on the tool as resistance rises.

When the clutch slips, you may hear or feel a ratcheting action while the bit stops turning. That is the torque limiter doing its job. If the screw is not seated, raise the setting one step and retest on scrap, or address the material resistance with a pilot hole. Do not defeat the clutch by holding the trigger longer or forcing the tool against the screw.

Use a pilot hole in thick or hard material
Milwaukee’s “Driving Screws” manual advises drilling a pilot hole for thick or hard material. A pilot hole reduces the material the screw must displace and can make seating more predictable. It is especially useful when a screw begins normally but then demands a sudden increase in torque.
Drill the pilot hole with a bit appropriate to the fastener and material, keep the drill square, clear the hole, and then return to the correctly sized driver bit. The supplied manual guidance does not establish one pilot-hole diameter for every screw; select the size from the fastener or material instructions rather than guessing.
Using an impact driver without overdriving
An impact driver does not use the same adjustable mechanical clutch found on a drill/driver. Its control comes from the selected drive mode, electronic speed response and your trigger input. Treat those controls as a way to limit delivery, not as permission to use excessive force.

For a small or self-tapping screw, select the lower or controlled mode when available. Use short trigger inputs, pause to check the seating depth, and stop as soon as the head is correctly seated. On a larger structural fastener, follow the fastener and material instructions; do not assume that the highest mode is appropriate simply because the tool can deliver it.
Keep the bit loaded straight
Impact pulses make a poor fit or angled bit move more violently. Hold the tool in line with the fastener and maintain firm, even contact. If the bit bounces, stop and correct the setup. Increasing trigger time will not correct an incorrect bit.
Drill/driver versus impact driver
| Factor | Drill/driver | Impact driver |
|---|---|---|
| Primary control | Adjustable clutch plus speed selection | Drive-control modes, electronic response and trigger control |
| Best anti-strip habit | Start with a low clutch setting, test on scrap and increase only as needed | Use a controlled mode, short trigger pulls and stop at seating |
| Low-speed use | Use the low speed range for screw driving | Use the gentlest available mode and smooth trigger input for small fasteners |
| When resistance rises | Let the clutch slip or make a pilot hole rather than forcing the bit | Release the trigger, reassess fit and consider a pilot hole; impacts are not a substitute for alignment |
| Is a new tool required? | No. Correct bit selection and technique are the foundation. | No. Milwaukee presents the 2953-20’s modes as control benefits, but basic strip prevention does not require buying an impact driver. |
Neither tool is a universal winner. The correct choice depends on the fastener, material, access and the control you need at the final turns.
Common symptoms and corrections
| What you observe | Likely cause | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| The bit jumps out immediately | Wrong style or size, poor seating or an angled driver | Release the trigger, identify the recess again, use the matching bit and realign the tool. |
| The bit fits but slips under load | Worn tip, damaged screw recess or insufficient forward contact | Replace the bit, inspect the screw and maintain straight, steady pressure. |
| The screw stops above the surface | Clutch setting too low, material too hard or no pilot hole | On a drill/driver, raise the clutch one step after a scrap test; for thick or hard material, drill a pilot hole. |
| The screw sinks too deeply | Clutch too high, speed too aggressive or trigger held after seating | Lower the clutch, slow the trigger and release as the head reaches the intended depth. |
| The driver spins after the head is seated | Trigger held too long or control mode too aggressive | Stop immediately; use shorter trigger inputs or a gentler mode. |
What to do when a screw head is already damaged
Stop driving as soon as the recess begins to round. Continuing with a mismatched or worn bit usually removes more material from the head and makes later removal harder. Replace the screw when practical. If the fastener must be recovered, use an extraction procedure and equipment appropriate to the screw and material; the Milwaukee material covered here does not specify a particular extraction method.

Bit and screw handling habits
- Keep bits clean and dry so debris does not hold the tip out of the recess.
- Store bits where their tips cannot strike other metal tools and become rounded.
- Replace a bit at the first clear sign of deformation instead of reserving it for “rough” work.
- Use a bit holder or extension only when it holds the bit securely and does not introduce noticeable wobble.
- Support the workpiece so it cannot shift as the screw starts.
- For repetitive work, test one screw on scrap before committing to a production run.
Is the Milwaukee SHOCKWAVE PH2 bit worth considering?
The SHOCKWAVE Impact Duty 2-inch PH2 Power Bit (48-32-4462) is a reasonable example when your screws require PH2 and you need a 2-inch bit. Milwaukee lists it for use with both drill drivers and impact drivers and says its customized tip geometry is intended to reduce stripping. That statement should be read as the manufacturer’s intended benefit, not proof that it will outperform every competing bit or prevent stripping in every application.
Its relevance ends when the fastener uses another recess or size. A PH2 bit cannot correctly drive a square, Torx or differently sized Phillips screw merely because it is made for an impact driver.
When an impact-driver upgrade makes sense
The M18 FUEL 1/4-inch Hex Impact Driver, model 2953-20, may be useful if you regularly drive many fasteners and want selectable drive-control modes, smooth acceleration or a self-tapping screw mode. Milwaukee describes those features as helping with control, stripping and overdriving in applicable tasks. They do not remove the need to match the bit, hold the tool square and release the trigger at the correct depth.

Pre-drive checklist
- Does the bit style exactly match the screw recess?
- Is the bit the correct size and free of rounding or chips?
- Is the bit seated fully and the driver axis square to the screw?
- For a drill/driver, is drive mode selected and the clutch tested on scrap?
- Is low speed or a controlled impact mode selected?
- Would a pilot hole help because the material is thick or hard?
- Can you release the trigger as soon as the screw reaches its intended depth?
These checks address the controllable causes of stripping: fit, alignment, torque and speed. Milwaukee’s product descriptions may identify features intended to reduce stripping, but the result still depends on using the right bit and applying those controls correctly.
