The quickest way to use macOS 27 is to confirm that your Mac is supported, make a current backup, install the upgrade from System Settings > General > Software Update, and then try the new tools from the apps and settings you already use. Apple Intelligence features are still in beta, begin with English availability, and can be limited by language, region, account configuration, or daily server capacity, so a missing feature does not necessarily mean the installation failed.
This guide covers eligibility, preparation, installation, and practical first steps for Siri AI, Spotlight, Visual Intelligence, writing tools, Photos, Safari, Shortcuts, Liquid Glass, parental controls, and the smaller changes that are easy to overlook.
Check whether your Mac can run macOS 27
Apple says macOS 27 works on Macs with Apple silicon, including supported M-series and A-series chips. The model list on Apple’s product information includes the following systems:

Prepare your Mac before upgrading
Make a backup
Apple recommends backing up your files before installing a major upgrade. Use the backup method you normally trust; Apple’s upgrade instructions do not require a particular drive, cloud service, or application. If you use an external SSD for a local backup, confirm that the backup completed and that you can locate important documents and photos before proceeding. Do not treat buying a new drive as a requirement—the requirement is having a recoverable copy of data you cannot replace.
Finish the practical checks
- Connect a Mac notebook to power so an interrupted battery charge does not stop the installation.
- Save open documents and close applications that contain unsaved work.
- Allow enough time for downloading, preparing, restarting, and completing the upgrade; the Software Update panel will show the current stage.
- If the Mac is managed by an employer or school, check with the administrator before installing because management policies can control when upgrades appear.
Install macOS 27 from Software Update
- Open Spotlight and search for Software Update, or choose Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update.
- Wait while the panel checks the Mac’s compatibility and available Apple software.
- When macOS 27 appears, choose the offered Update, Upgrade, or Restart action. The wording can vary with the Mac’s current version and the update being offered.
- Read the on-screen terms and prompts, enter an administrator password if requested, and let the Mac restart. Do not close the lid of a notebook or disconnect power during the installation.
- After you return to the desktop, open Software Update again to see whether a newer 27.x point release is offered.
Apple’s update page dated September 28, 2026, says macOS 27.0.1 provides bug fixes and is recommended for macOS 27 users. Point releases can change, so install the newest version Software Update offers instead of assuming that 27.0.1 is still current. The official update notes are at Apple Support’s macOS 27 update page.
Understand feature availability before trying Apple Intelligence
Apple Intelligence availability depends on Siri being enabled and the device and Siri languages being set to a supported language. Apple says some capabilities vary by region or language. Siri AI is described as a beta feature, initially available in English, and server-based requests can have daily usage limits. Those limits may change according to the feature, request complexity, system demand, and Apple’s policies. The Mac user guide is the best place to check the current language and regional list.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →In practice, eligibility has several layers: the Mac model must support the operating system, the requested capability must be enabled for that model, the language and region must qualify, and the account or app must support the action. Treat the procedures below as the normal entry points Apple describes, not as a guarantee that every prompt will produce the same answer or action.
Use Siri AI and Spotlight
Ask a general question
- Open Spotlight from the menu bar or with your usual Spotlight keyboard shortcut.
- Type or speak an open-ended question in the Spotlight interface.
- Read the response and refine the request if it needs more context. A follow-up that names the file, person, or task you mean is usually clearer than repeating the original wording.
Apple also provides a dedicated Siri app. Use Spotlight when you want the answer alongside search results; use the Siri app when you want a conversation-oriented entry point.
Search your personal context
Try a request that refers to information already stored on the Mac, such as finding a message, photo, or note. Use distinctive details—an approximate date, a person’s name, or a phrase from the item—to narrow the result. If no result appears, check that the item is actually stored in an app that Siri can access and that the request language is supported.

Ask Siri to perform an action
Apple describes asking Siri to take actions in supported apps. Phrase the request as an outcome, such as creating or changing information, rather than as a sequence of clicks. Review the proposed action before allowing it, particularly when it sends a message, edits a record, or changes a file. A request can be understood correctly while still being unavailable because the target app or language does not support that action.

Use Visual Intelligence with material on your screen
Visual Intelligence on Mac can start with onscreen material instead of a camera view. That makes it useful for a diagram in a document, an image on a webpage, or a page of a PDF.
- Display the image, document page, or other material you want to inspect.
- Capture a screenshot of the relevant area. Include only the material needed for the question so the result has clear context.
- Open the Visual Intelligence controls for the screenshot.
- Ask what the material shows, search for related information, or request an available action.
- Check the result against the original screen before saving, sharing, or acting on it.
The exact actions offered can depend on what is visible and on availability in your language and region. A screenshot of a chart may support an explanation, while a screenshot containing private information deserves the same care as sharing the original file.
Get writing help in Mail and Messages
Apple says Siri AI can draft, proofread, and rewrite text in apps including Mail and Messages. The most reliable workflow is to supply a clear purpose and then review the generated wording yourself.
- Open a new message or reply in Mail or Messages.
- Enter a short description of what you need to say, or select the text you want improved.
- Choose the app’s Apple Intelligence writing-help control and select the available drafting, proofreading, or rewriting option.
- Specify the audience and tone when the control offers those choices. Mention facts that must not change, such as dates, amounts, or names.
- Read the complete result, correct details, and only then send or save it.
Writing help depends on Apple Intelligence availability and supported language settings. It can improve structure or tone, but it does not verify that a statement is factually correct or that a recipient is the right person.
Edit images with the new Photos tools
Spatial Reframing
Open a photo in Photos and look for the Spatial Reframing edit. Use it when the subject is positioned well but the framing needs to change after capture. Try several compositions before accepting one, and keep the original so you can return to it.

Extend
Use Extend when you need more visual space around an image. It can be useful for fitting a photo to a different crop or layout. Inspect newly created areas closely; Apple does not promise an identical result for every image.
Clean Up
Choose Clean Up to remove a distracting object or mark from a photo. Work at a zoom level where you can see the edges of the selection, then compare the edited image with the original. Busy backgrounds, overlapping subjects, and reflections can make any removal less convincing, so undo and try a smaller selection when necessary.
These tools change the picture rather than the original capture. Export or duplicate an edited version when you need a separate file for sharing, and retain the unedited original for future changes.
Use Safari’s organization, alerts, and extension tools
Let Safari group tabs by topic
Safari 27 can automatically group tabs by topic. Open several related tabs and allow Safari to organize them; review the group name and membership before closing or moving tabs. Automatic grouping is a starting point, not a permanent filing system, so rename or rearrange groups when your project changes.
Monitor a page with Notify Me
Use Notify Me on a page you want Safari to watch. Apple gives price drops and restocks as examples of changes that can trigger an alert. Choose only pages whose changes matter to you, and remember that a notification tells you a monitored page changed—it does not reserve an item or guarantee that a price remains available.
Describe an Extension
Safari’s extension workflow includes a way to describe an extension idea in natural language. Explain the problem, the pages it should affect, and the behavior you want. Review the proposed extension carefully before enabling it, because an extension can receive access to webpage content or alter browsing behavior.

Put the WebKit number in context
Apple Developer reports that WebKit for Safari 27 contains over 1,000 browser-engine improvements. That is a vendor-reported count of WebKit changes, not a measured promise that every Mac will load pages 1,000 times faster or use less battery. Your experience will depend on the website, network, Mac model, and extensions. The technical overview is available in Apple’s WWDC26 macOS guide.
Create natural-language automations in Shortcuts
- Open the Shortcuts app and start a new shortcut.
- Describe the result you want in ordinary language. Include the trigger, the apps involved, and any conditions that matter.
- Let Apple assemble the required action steps, then inspect each step in order.
- Replace vague inputs with specific files, contacts, locations, or time conditions where needed.
- Run the shortcut with harmless test data before adding it to an automation or sharing it.
- Approve permissions only for actions you understand, especially when the shortcut reads personal data or sends a message.
Apple’s example is a shortcut that texts a partner when you are heading home and includes an estimated arrival time based on traffic. To make a similar shortcut dependable, define what counts as “heading home,” identify the destination, and decide whether you want confirmation before the message is sent.
Adjust the Liquid Glass appearance
- Open System Settings and choose the appearance settings.
- Find the Liquid Glass appearance slider.
- Move it toward ultraclear for a more transparent look or toward fully tinted for stronger surfaces and contrast.
- Keep the setting that makes text, controls, and windows easiest for you to read. The preferred balance is subjective and can differ between a bright room and a dark one.
Apple’s release notes say the appearance changes improve readability. The slider is a personal presentation control, not a performance mode; changing it should not be expected to speed up the Mac.
Set up the redesigned parental controls
Open the redesigned parental-controls area in System Settings while signed in with the family account that manages the child’s Mac account. Apple describes several controls:
- Ask to Browse: a child can request permission before visiting a new Safari website.
- Communication Safety: safeguards can help address sensitive images or communications.
- Time allowances: set how much time is available for use.
- Schedules: define periods when apps or the Mac can be accessed.
Account roles and the exact setup sequence depend on how the child’s account and family group are configured. Follow Apple’s child-account guidance when adding or changing a child, and test a rule with the child’s account so you know whether it asks, blocks, or allows the intended activity.

Calendar event creation from a description
In Calendar, describe an event in plain language, including its title, date, time, and location when relevant. Review the parsed fields before saving. Natural language can omit a detail you assumed was obvious, so check the time zone, repeat setting, and invitees.
Captions and translation
For media that already has captions, use the caption controls to view synchronized captions and, where offered, a translation. Translation availability depends on the language pair and region; compare important names, numbers, and technical terms with the original captions.
Faster AirDrop transfers
Send a file with AirDrop as usual, keeping the receiving device nearby and unlocked. The update is designed to make transfers faster, but the actual time still depends on file size, distance, radio interference, and the receiving device.
Pull down to refresh
In apps including Safari, Mail, News, Podcasts, and Calendar, pull down on the content view to refresh it. If the gesture does not work in a particular screen, use that app’s existing refresh control; not every view is a refreshable list.
What to do when a feature is missing
- Return to Software Update and install any newer macOS 27 point release offered.
- Confirm that the Mac model is on Apple’s compatibility list, then check whether the specific feature has a separate hardware requirement.
- For Apple Intelligence features, verify that Siri is enabled and that both Siri and device languages are supported.
- Check regional and account availability. A beta feature can be unavailable even after the operating system installs successfully.
- If an AI request stops working after several uses, wait and try later; server-side daily limits can vary with demand and request complexity.
- Try the feature from its documented entry point—Spotlight or the Siri app for Siri AI, a screenshot for Visual Intelligence, the relevant app for writing or Photos tools, and System Settings for appearance or parental controls.
Apple’s own descriptions are the most reliable source for changing eligibility and limits. Use the macOS 27 upgrade instructions, the macOS 27 update notes, and the Mac user guide when a label or availability message differs from the steps above.
A practical first-day sequence
If you want to explore macOS 27 without changing many settings at once, use this order:
- Back up the Mac and install the newest macOS 27 release offered by Software Update.
- Open Spotlight and ask one general question, then try finding a message, note, or photo from your own Mac.
- Take a screenshot of an image or PDF page and test Visual Intelligence on that onscreen material.
- Use writing help on a draft that contains no sensitive information, and check every factual detail before saving it.
- Open Photos and compare Spatial Reframing, Extend, and Clean Up on a duplicate of an image.
- In Safari, let related tabs form a group and set one Notify Me alert for a page you genuinely need to monitor.
- Create a simple Shortcuts automation, inspect its actions, and run it manually before allowing messages or other external actions.
- Choose a Liquid Glass setting that remains readable, then review parental controls if the Mac is used by a child.
This sequence exposes the major new workflows while keeping potentially consequential actions—sending messages, changing family restrictions, or editing originals—under your control.
