Low Data Mode is a built-in iPhone setting for cellular or Wi-Fi connections that limits background network activity, automatic downloads, backups and some media quality. Turn it on for the specific connection that has a data cap or slow speeds: LTE/4G and 5G use Cellular settings, while Wi-Fi has a separate per-network switch.

What Low Data Mode does

Apple describes Low Data Mode, available with iOS 13 and later, as a way to “restrict background network use and save network usage.” It changes how the iPhone and apps use a selected connection; it does not change your carrier allowance, increase your speed, or guarantee that no data will be transferred.

The setting mainly affects activity that can wait until later. Apps may stop network work when they are not open, Background App Refresh is turned off, automatic downloads and backups pause, and streaming quality can be reduced. Each app decides how to adapt, so behavior is not identical everywhere.

  • Use cellular Low Data Mode when your mobile plan has a limit, you are roaming, or you are using a limited travel line.
  • Use Wi-Fi Low Data Mode when a particular hotspot, home connection or travel network is slow or metered.
  • Enable both separately if you want the restriction on both cellular and Wi-Fi; turning it on for one does not automatically enable it for the other.

It is a device setting rather than a subscription, utility or add-on. There is no separate purchase or activation fee for Low Data Mode itself. Your normal carrier, internet and iCloud plan charges still apply, and the setting cannot increase the amount of data included in any plan.

  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Before you turn it on

First identify which connection is actually limited. Cellular Low Data Mode applies to the selected mobile-data line; Wi-Fi Low Data Mode applies to one saved Wi-Fi network. If you are connected to a metered hotspot but leave only cellular mode enabled, the hotspot can still receive normal background traffic. Conversely, a Wi-Fi setting does not protect you after the phone switches to mobile data.

Check whether your iPhone is using LTE/4G or 5G. On LTE/4G, the switch is directly in Cellular Data Options (or Mobile Data Options). On 5G, it is inside Data Mode. Menu names can differ by country, carrier, iPhone model and region, so a missing label does not necessarily indicate a fault.

Turn on Low Data Mode for cellular service

Apple’s labels vary by country, carrier and iPhone model. You may see Cellular or Mobile Data, and either Cellular Data Options or Mobile Data Options.

LTE or 4G

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Cellular or Mobile Data.
  3. Tap Cellular Data Options or Mobile Data Options.
  4. Turn on Low Data Mode.

If you do not see the option, your carrier or region may expose a different set of cellular controls. Apple recommends checking with the provider for plan-specific details.

5G

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data.
  2. Open Cellular Data Options or Mobile Data Options.
  3. Tap Data Mode.
  4. Select Low Data Mode.

On a 5G iPhone, Low Data Mode is one of three Data Mode choices. The available choices and defaults depend on the carrier and plan.

Dual SIM or multiple lines

  1. Open Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data.
  2. Tap the phone number or line you want to limit.
  3. Turn on Low Data Mode for that line.

This matters when one line is a limited travel eSIM or work line and the other has a different allowance. Select the correct number before changing the setting. If you later make another line the cellular-data line, review that line’s setting rather than assuming the first line’s choice followed it.

Turn on Low Data Mode for a Wi-Fi network

  1. Open Settings > Wi-Fi.
  2. Find the network you are currently connected to.
  3. Tap the Information button beside its name.
  4. Turn on Low Data Mode.

The preference belongs to that Wi-Fi network, not to every network your iPhone joins. Apple says iCloud keeps Wi-Fi Low Data Mode preferences current across your devices, so a saved network’s preference may follow you to another Apple device signed in to the same account. Treat this as a per-network preference: enabling it for a hotel network does not enable it for your home network.

When you leave the network, the Wi-Fi restriction is not a blanket cellular restriction. If the phone falls back to mobile data, use the cellular steps as well when the mobile allowance is limited.

What changes in Apple apps and services

The following are Apple’s documented examples of adaptations. They describe expected behavior, not a promise that every app or transfer will stop.

App or service Typical change while Low Data Mode applies
App Store Video autoplay, automatic app updates and automatic downloads are turned off.
Music Automatic downloads and high-quality streaming are turned off.
Podcasts Feeds update less often; episode downloads occur only when connected to Wi-Fi.
News Articles are not prefetched in advance.
iCloud Updates and automatic backups pause, and iCloud Photos updates turn off while the mode applies.
FaceTime Video bitrate is optimized for lower bandwidth.

Other third-party apps can make their own reductions, such as delaying synchronization or lowering media quality. An app that is open and actively being used can still communicate, because Low Data Mode is primarily a restriction on background and automatic activity.

These changes can be noticeable in different ways. A new App Store version may wait instead of installing automatically. A Podcast feed can look less current until a less restricted connection is available. Photos may remain on the phone without immediately updating iCloud. A FaceTime call can continue while using a lower video bitrate. None of those outcomes means the feature failed; they are the intended trade-off for using less background data.

How 5G Data Mode choices differ

5G iPhones provide three modes. Think of them as a trade-off between background activity, media quality and high-data features.

5G mode Background and automatic activity Media and other behavior
Standard Allows automatic updates and background tasks over cellular. Uses standard video and FaceTime quality.
Low Data Mode Pauses automatic updates and background tasks to reduce cellular usage. Apps and Apple services can apply the reductions listed above.
Allow More Data on 5G Permits more data-intensive cellular activity. Can enable higher-quality FaceTime, HD Apple TV content, Apple Music media, iOS updates over cellular and automatic iCloud backups.

Carrier configuration determines whether all three choices appear and which one is initially selected. “Allow More Data on 5G” is therefore not a universal promise that every listed feature will be available on every plan. It is the opposite of a conservation setting: choose it only when your plan and allowance support higher-data use.

The practical comparison is straightforward. Choose Standard when you want routine cellular background work and standard media quality. Choose Low Data Mode when reducing automatic transfers matters more than immediacy or quality. Choose Allow More Data on 5G when higher-quality calls and media, cellular iOS updates or automatic iCloud backups are worth the additional usage.

What Low Data Mode does not do

  • It does not alter your plan. Your carrier’s allowance, billing rules and roaming terms remain unchanged.
  • It does not provide a fixed percentage of savings. Apple publishes no universal savings rate; the result depends on your apps, how often you stream, backups and other usage.
  • It does not block every transfer. Foreground use, essential communications and app-specific activity can still use data.
  • It is not a speed booster. It can reduce congestion caused by background work, but it cannot improve the underlying network signal.
  • It is connection-specific. A cellular setting and a Wi-Fi setting are separate, and Wi-Fi settings are saved per network.
  • It does not replace a data plan. If the allowance itself is too small, compare mobile data or travel eSIM plans with your provider; Low Data Mode changes device behavior but not plan terms.

Because Apple does not publish a guaranteed savings percentage, be cautious about claims that the switch will save a particular amount. Your result depends on whether the phone normally performs cloud backups, downloads media, refreshes feeds or streams over the affected connection.

Connectivity Assist and weak Wi-Fi

Apple’s Connectivity Assist feature can add cellular data when a Wi-Fi connection is weak. Apple says Connectivity Assist is not used when cellular Low Data Mode is active. This relationship does not mean Low Data Mode prevents every possible cellular transfer, nor does it establish a guaranteed amount of data saved.

If a weak Wi-Fi network is the problem, enable Low Data Mode on that Wi-Fi network as well. If mobile data is tightly limited, review the cellular setting for the active line instead of relying on Wi-Fi behavior alone. Low Data Mode can reduce background competition on a weak connection, but it cannot repair poor coverage, a congested access point or an outage.

Choosing the right setting for common situations

You are close to a monthly cellular cap

Enable Low Data Mode on the cellular line that has the cap. On 5G, choose it under Data Mode. This is the most useful choice when automatic updates, cloud synchronization or streaming could consume the remaining allowance without you actively starting them. Keep in mind that an app you open and use can still transfer data.

You are using a metered hotspot

Enable Low Data Mode from the Wi-Fi network’s information page. Because the preference is saved for that network, your normal home Wi-Fi can retain its usual behavior while the hotspot remains restricted. When you connect to a different hotspot, inspect that network’s information page and set it separately if needed.

You have a limited travel eSIM or a second line

Select the travel or work number under Cellular or Mobile Data before changing the setting. A Dual SIM iPhone can have different allowances on each line, so applying Low Data Mode to the wrong number leaves the limited line unchanged. Apple notes that available cellular controls can vary by provider and region; ask the carrier how its eSIM or roaming plan handles data.

You need high-quality calls or media

Use Standard 5G Data Mode when ordinary background activity and standard quality are acceptable. If your plan supports it and data is plentiful, Allow More Data on 5G is designed for higher-quality FaceTime, HD Apple TV content, Apple Music media, iOS updates over cellular and automatic iCloud backups. These features use more data by design.

You are in an area with slow speeds

Low Data Mode can reduce the amount of background work competing for a slow connection. It will not repair poor coverage. Keep the mode enabled for the affected network, and expect apps that stream or sync to adjust quality or wait until a less restricted connection is available.

After enabling it: checks and troubleshooting

An app still uses data

Low Data Mode does not make an app completely offline. Check whether the app is open, playing media, uploading content or performing another task you explicitly started. Those foreground actions can continue to communicate. Third-party apps also choose their own responses, so one app may pause synchronization while another continues a task you initiated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Automatic downloads or updates stopped

This is expected. App Store automatic downloads and updates, Music automatic downloads, and some cloud operations are among the activities Apple says can pause. Connect to unrestricted Wi-Fi or turn Low Data Mode off for the relevant connection when you want those operations to resume. If the operation remains pending, also check the app’s own settings and your normal account or storage conditions.

Photos or backups are not current

iCloud Photos updates and automatic iCloud backups can pause while the mode applies. If a current backup is important, use a suitable Wi-Fi connection and check the service again after disabling Low Data Mode for that network, subject to your normal iCloud and device settings. Do not assume that seeing older photos on the phone means they were deleted; updates can simply be waiting.

The option is missing

Confirm that you opened the correct line under Cellular or Mobile Data, especially with Dual SIM. On 5G, look inside Data Mode rather than expecting a separate top-level switch. If the labels or choices still differ, Apple notes that carrier, model and regional configuration affect the available cellular settings. Contact the provider for plan-specific details instead of changing unrelated network settings.

Streaming quality changed

Reduced quality is an intended adaptation. FaceTime can use a lower video bitrate, Music can disable high-quality streaming, and other apps may make similar choices. Use Standard or Allow More Data on 5G, or disable Low Data Mode for the active network, when quality is more important than conserving usage. The exact quality controls inside a third-party app may still apply independently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You changed networks and the behavior seems inconsistent

Check which connection is active and whether its switch is enabled. Cellular and Wi-Fi controls are separate, and Wi-Fi preferences are saved per network. A setting enabled for one hotspot will not automatically apply to another. With multiple cellular lines, verify the selected number as well.

How to turn Low Data Mode off

Use the same path and switch the setting off when you want normal background behavior again. For LTE/4G, open Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data > Cellular Data Options or Mobile Data Options and turn off Low Data Mode. For 5G, open Data Mode and choose Standard or another available option. For Wi-Fi, open Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the information button beside the connected network and turn off Low Data Mode for that network.

Turning the setting off allows paused automatic work to resume according to the app, iCloud and device settings. It does not retroactively change your carrier usage or restore a download that an app has canceled; it simply removes this particular data restriction.

Managing the trade-off

Low Data Mode is most effective when you apply it selectively. Use cellular Low Data Mode for a capped line, Wi-Fi Low Data Mode for a metered or unreliable network, and leave normal connections unrestricted when automatic updates, backups and high-quality media are priorities. Revisit the setting when you change SIMs, travel, join a new hotspot or move from LTE to 5G.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For plan limits, roaming rules or the meaning of a carrier-specific Data Mode choice, consult your provider. If your underlying problem is an insufficient allowance, comparing mobile data or travel eSIM plans may help; no plan change is made by this setting. The setting changes iPhone behavior, not the terms of the underlying mobile or internet plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Low Data Mode save a guaranteed amount of data?

No. Apple does not publish a universal percentage. Savings depend on your apps, streaming, automatic downloads, cloud activity and how often you use the affected connection. Low Data Mode reduces background and automatic use but does not promise zero transfers.

Is cellular Low Data Mode the same as Wi-Fi Low Data Mode?

They are separate controls. Cellular mode applies to a selected mobile-data line, while Wi-Fi mode is set on each saved Wi-Fi network. Enable both if both connections are limited.

Where is Low Data Mode on a 5G iPhone?

Go to Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data > Cellular Data Options or Mobile Data Options > Data Mode, then choose Low Data Mode. On LTE/4G, the switch appears directly in the cellular options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did my iCloud Photos or backup stop updating?

Apple says iCloud Photos updates and automatic iCloud backups can pause while Low Data Mode applies. Use a suitable unrestricted Wi-Fi connection or turn the mode off for the relevant network, then check the service again.

Will Low Data Mode stop an app I am using?

Not necessarily. The feature mainly restricts background and automatic activity. An app that is open, streaming, uploading or performing another task you started can still communicate.

What is the difference between Standard and Allow More Data on 5G?

Standard permits routine cellular background activity at standard video and FaceTime quality. Allow More Data on 5G enables higher-data features such as higher-quality FaceTime, HD Apple TV content, Apple Music media, iOS updates over cellular and automatic iCloud backups when your carrier and plan support them.

Can Low Data Mode improve a weak signal?

No. It can reduce background work competing for a slow connection, but it cannot improve coverage or repair an unreliable network. Apple also says Connectivity Assist is not used when cellular Low Data Mode is active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does turning on Low Data Mode change my carrier plan or roaming charges?

No. Allowances, billing rules and roaming terms remain the same. The setting only changes how the iPhone and apps use the selected connection.

The Bottom Line

Use Low Data Mode on the exact cellular line or Wi-Fi network you need to conserve. LTE/4G places the switch in cellular options; 5G places it under Data Mode; Wi-Fi is configured per network. Expect fewer background transfers, paused automatic downloads and backups, and potentially lower media quality—not a guaranteed savings percentage or a replacement for an appropriate data plan.
