To turn on Lockdown Mode on a Mac, update macOS, open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security, scroll to Lockdown Mode, choose Turn On, confirm, and select Turn On & Restart. Lockdown Mode is an extreme, optional defense for people who may face highly sophisticated, targeted attacks. It deliberately makes a Mac less convenient by restricting messages, websites, Apple services, and some accessory connections. Apple says most people are never targeted by this type of attack, so treat the setting as a high-risk security decision rather than a routine privacy switch.
What Lockdown Mode protects against
Lockdown Mode reduces the number of ways specially crafted content can reach and exploit Apple software. Instead of trying to preserve every feature, it limits selected apps, websites, services, and connection methods that could provide an attacker with an opening. Apple describes it as “extreme, optional protection” for people who may be targeted by highly sophisticated cyberattacks, including attacks involving mercenary spyware.
This is a targeted-threat control, not a general malware shield or a replacement for software updates, account security, backups, or careful handling of messages. Apple’s October 2025 support guidance states: “Most people are never targeted by this type of attack.” That means the security benefit is most compelling when you have a credible reason to believe you, your organization, or your work could be singled out by a capable adversary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPeople who may reasonably consider it
- Journalists, researchers, activists, lawyers, political figures, diplomats, and human-rights workers who handle sensitive sources or cases.
- People involved in disputes, investigations, elections, public campaigns, or high-value commercial matters who have received credible warnings or suspicious targeting.
- Organizations whose security team has identified a realistic risk from highly capable, targeted attackers.
- Anyone advised by a trusted incident-response or digital-security professional to reduce exposure on a particular Apple device.
Being concerned about ordinary scams, advertising trackers, or common account theft does not by itself make Lockdown Mode the right choice. Those risks are usually addressed more effectively with current software, unique passwords, multifactor authentication, encrypted backups, and account-recovery planning.

What to do before enabling it
Lockdown Mode is strongest when every supported Apple device is current and protected. Apple documents protections that vary by operating-system version, so install the latest available software first.
- Update the Mac. Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update and install available macOS updates. Restart if macOS requests it.
- Update other Apple devices you use. Bring your iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch (if applicable) up to date so they can receive the corresponding protections.
- Check critical workflows. Identify websites, messaging exchanges, video calls, peripherals, and business tools you cannot afford to lose temporarily. Lockdown Mode may block or alter them.
- Tell collaborators what to expect. If you work with a security team or sensitive contacts, explain that invitations, attachments, calls, or links may not arrive normally.
No additional hardware, subscription, or physical product is required. Lockdown Mode is built into supported Apple software.
How to turn on Lockdown Mode on a Mac
Apple’s labels can vary slightly between macOS releases, but the current path is:

- Choose Apple menu > System Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security in the sidebar.
- Scroll to Lockdown Mode.
- Click Turn On.
- Read the confirmation, then click Turn On Lockdown Mode.

The restart is part of the activation process. Save work and close applications before confirming it. After the Mac restarts, review the Lockdown Mode pane if you need to verify that the setting is active.
What changes after you enable it
Lockdown Mode does not make every app behave identically, and Apple’s protections depend on the Mac model and software version. The following are the documented categories of change you should plan for.

| Area | Expected restriction | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|
| Messages | Most attachment types are blocked, with some image exceptions. Link previews are unavailable. | Contacts may need to send plain text or approved image formats. A message that appears incomplete may be blocked by design rather than lost. |
| Web browsing | Certain complex web technologies are blocked. | Some sites can load slowly, fail to load, or display without expected fonts or images. Interactive pages may be unusable. |
| Apple services and FaceTime | Some incoming invitations and calls are blocked unless there has been prior interaction; some features are unavailable. | Unexpected FaceTime calls or invitations may not reach you. Establish trusted contacts in advance when possible. |
| Accessory connections | A Mac laptop with Apple silicon must be unlocked and must explicitly approve accessory connections. | New docks, storage devices, displays, and other accessories may not work until you unlock the Mac and approve the connection. |
These restrictions are intentional attack-surface reduction. A site failing to render or an attachment not opening does not necessarily indicate a damaged Mac. First check whether the behavior matches one of the Lockdown Mode limits.
Messages and attachments
Messages remains available, but the range of content it accepts is narrower. Most attachment types are blocked, and link previews are disabled. This reduces the opportunity for malicious files or automatically processed content to reach the device. Ask trusted contacts to send essential information as plain text or an image format that still works for your setup, and use a separate approved channel for files when your security policy permits it.

Safari and complex websites
Lockdown Mode restricts selected web technologies. A page can therefore appear incomplete even when your network connection is healthy. Missing fonts, images, scripts, or interactive controls are expected possibilities. If a site is essential, determine whether it has a simpler, static version or an alternate workflow before you enable the mode.
FaceTime, invitations, and Apple services
Incoming invitations and calls from people with whom you have not previously interacted may be blocked. This can affect time-sensitive meetings, shared documents, or other Apple-service invitations. Arrange an initial trusted interaction or a different contact method before relying on these services.
Accessories on Apple-silicon Mac laptops
When a supported Mac laptop uses Apple silicon, it requires the computer to be unlocked and your explicit approval before an accessory connection is accepted. Build that approval into your routine when connecting a dock, external storage, phone, camera, or other peripheral. This requirement is especially relevant when you normally connect equipment while the lid is closed or the Mac is locked.

Should you use it every day?
There is no universal “best” setting. Compare the security need with the work you must still perform.
| Question | Normal device use | Lockdown Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Threat fit | Appropriate for the ordinary risk faced by most people. | Designed for a credible risk of highly sophisticated, targeted attacks. |
| Attack surface | More features and content types remain available. | Selected content paths and technologies are deliberately restricted. |
| Messaging | Broader attachment and preview compatibility. | Most attachments blocked; link previews unavailable. |
| Web compatibility | Complex websites generally work as designed. | Some sites may be slow, incomplete, or unusable. |
| Calls and invitations | Incoming Apple-service invitations and calls work normally. | Some are blocked unless prior interaction exists; some features are unavailable. |
| Peripherals | Accessories generally connect without an extra approval step. | Apple-silicon Mac laptops require an unlocked Mac and explicit approval for accessory connections. |
| Device coverage | Each device follows its ordinary settings. | Must be enabled separately on each Mac, iPhone, and iPad; a paired Apple Watch follows the iPhone setting. |
For someone facing a documented, high-end threat, the lost convenience may be a reasonable trade. For someone who mainly wants protection from routine phishing or tracking, the restrictions are likely to outweigh the incremental benefit.
Enable it on your other Apple devices
Lockdown Mode is not a single account-wide switch. Enable it independently on your Mac, iPhone, and iPad. Apple recommends turning it on across supported devices for complete protection.
When Lockdown Mode is enabled on an iPhone, it also enables on a paired Apple Watch running watchOS 10 or later. You cannot toggle the feature directly on the Apple Watch; manage it from the paired iPhone. A Mac-only activation therefore does not protect messages, browsing, or other activity that takes place on your phone or tablet.
How to handle a website that will not work
Apple allows a trusted website to be excluded from Safari’s WebKit restrictions. Use an exception only when the site is necessary and you have a reason to trust it.

- Open the site in Safari on the Mac.
- Open Safari’s settings for that site.
- Deselect Enable Lockdown Mode.
- To review or manage exceptions, open Safari > Settings > Websites > Lockdown Mode.
An exception restores some site functionality by reducing the protection applied to that site. It can increase risk, so avoid broad or permanent exemptions and remove an exception when it is no longer necessary. Do not use an exception merely because a random site is inconvenient; reserve it for a trusted service with a clear operational need.

A required site is blank or missing controls
First confirm that the Mac is online and updated. If only one complex site is affected, its technologies may be restricted. Look for a plain-text, mobile, or downloadable alternative. If none exists and the site is genuinely trusted, use a narrowly scoped Safari exception rather than disabling protections broadly.
A contact says an attachment never arrived
Ask what file type was sent. Most attachment types are blocked in Messages, while some image types are allowed. Request plain text or an image exception that your workflow supports, or use an approved file-sharing channel outside Messages.
A FaceTime call or invitation is missing
The sender may not have an established interaction with you, or the feature may be restricted in Lockdown Mode. Arrange contact through a trusted, already-used channel and plan important meetings around the limitation.

On an Apple-silicon Mac laptop, unlock the Mac and look for the explicit accessory-approval prompt. If you normally connect equipment while the computer is locked, change that procedure. If the accessory is unexpected, do not approve it simply to restore convenience.

The setting seems different after an update
Apple changes protections by operating-system version. Install the latest available updates and reread the Lockdown Mode description in System Settings > Privacy & Security so your expectations match the software currently installed.
Use Lockdown Mode as one layer, not the whole security plan
Lockdown Mode addresses a narrow, high-consequence threat model. Keep the fundamentals in place: update macOS and other devices promptly, use unique passwords with multifactor authentication, review account-recovery options, maintain encrypted backups, and investigate unexpected security alerts. If you suspect active targeting, preserve relevant evidence and seek qualified incident-response or digital-security advice rather than relying on a single setting.
Before enabling the mode, make a list of essential contacts, websites, invitations, and accessories. After activation, test the minimum workflow needed for your work without weakening protections unnecessarily. Reassess the decision if your threat situation changes; the right balance for a person under active targeting may not be right for an ordinary home or office Mac.
The practical decision
Turn on Lockdown Mode when you have a credible, high-end targeted-threat reason and can accept reduced compatibility. On the Mac, the activation sequence is System Settings > Privacy & Security > Lockdown Mode > Turn On > Turn On Lockdown Mode > Turn On & Restart. Expect blocked attachments, fewer web technologies, restricted invitations and calls, and approval prompts for accessories. Protect the rest of your Apple ecosystem separately, and use Safari exceptions only for trusted sites when the operational need justifies the additional exposure.
