To avoid roadwork delays, check your full route before you leave, distinguish a closure from a construction alert, and compare alternate routes by arrival time, distance, and how much of the work zone they avoid. Recheck shortly before departing: a map alert can be useful without guaranteeing that a road is open or that a detour will be faster.
How to check your route before you leave
- Enter your destination. Open your preferred traffic-map app and request directions so you can inspect the actual proposed route, not just the area around your starting point.
- Zoom out enough to see the whole trip. Look for slow traffic, construction or incident markers, lane restrictions, and full-road closure symbols along the route.
- Open the route alternatives. Compare each option’s expected arrival time and distance. Trace it around the affected segment to see whether it avoids the work zone or merely bypasses part of a queue.
- Check again before setting off. Traffic and work status can change between the first check and departure. If a closure would seriously affect your trip, consult the relevant local transportation department or road authority when it publishes current advisories.
What a roadwork alert means for your route
A construction or incident report may only be a warning
Do not assume that a construction pin automatically changes navigation. Waze’s partner guidance distinguishes incident reports—which inform drivers but do not affect routing—from mapped road closures, which do. A mapped closure can block a road from Waze routes
Waze says it supports full roadway closures: when a road segment is marked closed, it will not route traffic onto it. Its closure guidance does not describe support for closing only some lanes; lane-closure delays may instead appear as jam alerts. In a July 31, 2024 announcement, Google said Maps was making it easier to report construction, lane closures, objects, and police presence. Google said reports came from the Maps and Waze communities and that users could see which app submitted a report. The announcement named Android, iOS, cars with Google built-in, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay; exact features and availability can change by app version and region. Why an alert may be missing or out of date
Live maps draw on user reports and partner data, so an empty map is not proof that the route is clear. Waze says its traffic feed includes user-reported construction, hazards, crashes, and other incidents. It identifies slowdowns by comparing current road conditions with historical traffic for the same time and day of the week, alongside GPS signals and user reports; it does not publish a consumer-facing accuracy percentage. Partner-feed processing also takes time. Waze says feed or Map Editor closure submissions can appear in 1–4 minutes, while email-submitted closure information may take up to two business days. Google’s partner guidance gives approximate processing windows of 15–25 minutes for new feed incidents to appear in Google Maps and up to 1–2 hours for updates to existing feed closures. Waze also says planned closures appear when relevant and real-time closures appear immediately; the specific 1–4 minute window applies to closures submitted through data feeds or the Map Editor. A closure may be sent for editor review if information is missing, and Waze says a marked closure may reopen when its submitted end time expires, a partner reports an early reopening, or its algorithm detects substantial traffic on the closed road. These differing paths are another reason not to treat an alert’s absence or presence as definitive proof of road conditions. Waze Partners Help: road closures
How to decide whether a detour is worthwhile
- Compare the displayed arrival time. Check the ETA and any delay shown for each route, rather than choosing only by appearance.
- Account for added distance. A shorter-looking path can still be slower, and an alternate road may not suit your vehicle or driving needs.
- Check what the detour actually avoids. Follow the proposed path through the area; it may skirt one portion of the queue but still pass the work zone.
- Interpret the marker correctly. A full closure, lane restriction, jam, and general construction report can have different routing effects.
- Use an official advisory for consequential closures. If available, local road-authority information can help verify a map alert before you commit to a substantial detour.
There is no supported universal estimate of minutes saved by using a live map for roadwork, and the available official sources do not establish a dependable cross-region accuracy ranking between Google Maps and Waze. Treat route choices as options to inspect—not promises of time saved.
