To control an app’s Live Activity in CarPlay, change that app’s setting on the connected iPhone: Settings > Apps > [app] > Live Activities. Apple uses the same Live Activity controls for iPhone and CarPlay. You can allow or turn off an app’s activity, but Apple does not provide a general CarPlay editor for moving fields, rewriting text, or rearranging the activity’s layout.
What Live Activities do in CarPlay
Live Activities are glanceable status displays supplied by an iPhone app. When an app supports the feature and an activity is running, CarPlay can show a small widget in the CarPlay Dashboard or present the activity as a notification. Apple describes this appearance as automatic: you do not install a separate CarPlay version of the activity or create a dashboard tile manually.
The activity might show changing progress or status from an app, but it is not a full CarPlay application. CarPlay presents the information in a vehicle-oriented format, with less room and fewer opportunities for interaction than the phone interface. The exact presentation depends on the app’s Live Activity implementation and the connected vehicle’s CarPlay environment.

- The iPhone must be connected to a CarPlay system, either wired or wirelessly according to the vehicle and phone setup.
- The app must implement and start a Live Activity. Installing an app alone does not create one.
- The app’s Live Activities setting must permit the feature.
- The activity must still be active. An app can end an activity when its event is complete or no longer relevant.
If any of these conditions is missing, there is no activity for CarPlay to display. CarPlay cannot manufacture a Live Activity for an app that does not offer one.

Turn a specific app’s Live Activity on or off
Use the iPhone’s per-app setting. Apple says these are the same Live Activity settings used for CarPlay.
- Open Settings on the iPhone.
- Tap Apps.
- Select the app whose activity you want to control.
- Tap Live Activities.
- Adjust the available Live Activity control for that app.
Reconnect to CarPlay or return to the CarPlay Dashboard after changing the setting. The change applies to that app’s Live Activity behavior; it does not create a global CarPlay layout editor.
Allowing an activity
Choose the enabled state in the app’s Live Activities page, then start or wait for an activity in the app. For example, an app may start an activity only after you begin a delivery, follow an event, begin a timer, or take another action defined by that app. Once the activity is active, CarPlay may show it automatically in Dashboard or as a notification.
Stopping an activity from appearing
Return to Settings > Apps > [app] > Live Activities and turn off the app’s activity control. This prevents that app’s Live Activity from being used in the CarPlay presentation as well as on the iPhone. It does not uninstall the app, cancel the underlying event, or change activities belonging to other apps.
Why you may not see a switch with the name you expect
The setting is available for apps that expose Live Activity controls. An app that has never implemented Live Activities may not show a useful activity option, and an app can decide when its activity starts and ends. Apple’s setting path is consistent, but the available controls and the content shown by an activity are app-specific.
What you can and cannot customize as a driver

This distinction prevents a common misunderstanding. The iPhone setting is a visibility and permission control, not a content designer. If a time, route status, score, or other value is missing, the driver generally cannot add it from CarPlay. The app’s developer must include the value in the activity and provide a layout that the system can use.

Where CarPlay places the activity
Apple identifies two user-facing locations: the CarPlay Dashboard and a notification. A small widget can appear automatically in Dashboard when the activity is active. The system may also surface an activity as a notification, depending on the event and presentation rules.
Dashboard presentation
Dashboard is intended for quick glances while driving. The activity therefore has limited space and is not treated like a full-screen app. A value that is prominent on the iPhone may be reduced, abbreviated, or omitted in the compact vehicle presentation.
Notification presentation
An activity can also arrive as a CarPlay notification. The notification is still generated from the app’s Live Activity; it is not a separate message that you compose in CarPlay. Whether it appears, and what text it contains, follows the app’s activity data and the system’s notification behavior.
Vehicle differences
CarPlay is implemented across many vehicle displays and configurations. Screen size, Dashboard availability, notification behavior, and the way an activity is adapted can differ. Apple’s platform guidance describes the supported behavior, not identical results for every vehicle. Treat the actual display in your car as the final authority for how much of an activity is visible.
Why the information can change without opening the app
Live Activities are designed to show the current state of an ongoing event. The app starts the activity and supplies updates; ActivityKit push notifications can also deliver updates. The visible card can therefore change while you remain in CarPlay.

It does not independently fetch fresh data from a server or track your position. The containing app or an ActivityKit push-notification service must provide the new state. If the provider stops sending updates, the activity can remain unchanged until the app updates it or ends it.

What this means when a value looks stale
- The app may not have sent a new activity update yet.
- The activity may have reached its intended end state.
- The phone may be temporarily unable to receive the provider’s update.
- The app may intentionally update only at particular milestones.
Refreshing the CarPlay view cannot create data that the app has not supplied. If an activity remains incorrect, check the event in the iPhone app and contact that app’s support rather than looking for a CarPlay field editor.
Using the activity safely while driving
Live Activities are glanceable by design, but glanceability does not make every control safe or available while driving. Apple documents buttons or toggles in expanded and Lock Screen presentations and says WidgetKit adapts functionality for CarPlay. That guidance does not guarantee that every button or toggle in an iPhone activity is interactive in the CarPlay presentation.
Expect a reduced interaction surface
A control can be visible on the iPhone yet be unavailable, changed, or presented differently in CarPlay. Do not assume that tapping a card will expose all of the actions available on the phone. The app may provide a read-only compact presentation, while reserving richer actions for an expanded or Lock Screen presentation.
Use the phone only when parked
If an action is not available through the CarPlay presentation, wait until the vehicle is safely parked before using the iPhone. Avoid repeatedly disconnecting and reconnecting CarPlay to force a control to appear; that does not change the activity’s supported interface.
Developer control: designing a Live Activity for CarPlay
Drivers control whether an app’s activity is allowed. Developers control the activity’s data, lifecycle, and presentation. Apple separates those responsibilities between ActivityKit and WidgetKit.
ActivityKit manages the lifecycle
ActivityKit is used to start, update, and end a Live Activity. Updates can originate in the app or arrive through ActivityKit push notifications. The activity does not itself make network requests or subscribe to location changes, so the app or its server-side push flow must calculate and deliver the state that the user sees.

WidgetKit supplies the presentation
WidgetKit renders the Live Activity in the system surfaces that support it. The same underlying activity can be represented on the iPhone and adapted for CarPlay. A developer should treat the vehicle display as a constrained context rather than simply copying the largest phone layout.
Compact CarPlay presentation is the default
Apple says Live Activities appear on the CarPlay Home Screen using the compact presentation by default. Compact means the design must communicate the essential state in a small area, with readable hierarchy and no dependency on a large touch target.
Declaring a custom small-family layout
A developer can declare a custom CarPlay layout with WidgetKit’s ActivityFamily.small and supplementalActivityFamilies(_:) . This allows the activity to provide a design intended for the small CarPlay family instead of relying solely on the default compact adaptation.
The custom family should prioritize the one or two values a driver needs most. A developer can use the small presentation to make the primary status legible, but cannot assume that adding more fields will make them visible: the vehicle surface still has limited space and system rules.
Designing the information hierarchy
- Put the current state or next decision first.
- Use short labels that remain understandable when truncated.
- Keep numbers and units together so a clipped value is not misleading.
- Do not require a driver to open the phone to interpret a critical status.
- Provide a sensible result when the activity has no new update.
These are design choices for the developer, not settings a driver can change after installation.

- Confirm the app supports Live Activities. Look for the app’s Live Activity behavior or its in-app instructions. If the app never starts an activity, CarPlay has nothing to display.
- Check the iPhone setting. Open Settings > Apps > [app] > Live Activities and verify that the feature is allowed.
- Start the qualifying event. Many apps create an activity only after a specific action, such as beginning a timer or an order. An idle app may not have an active card.
- Verify the CarPlay connection. Make sure the iPhone is connected and that the CarPlay Dashboard or notification area is available in the vehicle.
- Look in both supported surfaces. Check the Dashboard and CarPlay notifications; Apple documents both locations for Live Activities.
- Check the activity on the iPhone. If it is absent or ended there, CarPlay cannot show it. If it is present but stale, the app may not have delivered a new update.
- Allow time for an update. ActivityKit updates are delivered by the app or push notifications. A short delay does not imply a CarPlay display failure.
- Contact the app developer if the state is wrong. Report the app version, the event that should be active, and what the iPhone and CarPlay each displayed. The app owner controls the activity’s content and update logic.
Common situations and the right response
The activity appears on the iPhone but not in CarPlay
Check the app’s Live Activities setting first, then inspect Dashboard and notifications. CarPlay may be using a compact or adapted presentation, so an activity can be less prominent than on the phone. If the activity is permitted and active but never appears in that vehicle, the app’s CarPlay support or the vehicle’s presentation may be the limiting factor.
The activity appears, but a field is missing
There is no general setting for adding individual fields. The missing value may not be included in the app’s small CarPlay layout. Only the developer can change the activity’s content or provide a different CarPlay family layout.
A button is visible on the phone but not usable in CarPlay
That is permitted by the platform design. Apple’s documentation for buttons and toggles covers expanded and Lock Screen presentations, while CarPlay adapts functionality for the vehicle context. Use only the action the CarPlay interface actually exposes and perform other actions while parked.
The display is stuck on an old status
Because the Live Activity cannot fetch its own network or location data, it relies on the app or ActivityKit push updates. Check whether the event is still active in the app. If it is, the provider may need to send another update; restarting the activity from CarPlay is not a substitute for correcting the source data.
Turning off the setting did not cancel the event
The setting controls Live Activity presentation. It does not necessarily cancel the order, timer, trip, or other underlying event managed by the app. Use the app’s own controls to cancel or change that event.

This division explains why changing one setting cannot solve every display issue. A driver can grant or withdraw permission, while the app and platform determine the information and layout that remain.
