Turn on Data saver in the X app to load images at lower quality and stop videos from autoplaying. If you also use x.com, change its autoplay setting separately: X keeps website and app autoplay preferences independent.
What Data Saver changes
X’s built-in Data saver mode reduces media loading in the app by lowering image quality and preventing videos from autoplaying. It does not turn off all X network activity, and X’s help pages do not specify a data-saving percentage or megabyte estimate.
Turn on Data Saver in the X app
iPhone and iPad
- Open X and go to Settings and privacy → Accessibility, display, and languages → Data usage.
- Turn on Data saver.
With Data Saver enabled, you can still request a high-quality version of an individual image: long-press the image or open its more menu, then select Load high quality. X’s iOS data usage instructions describe these controls.

Android
- Open X and go to Settings and privacy → General → Data usage.
- Turn on Data saver.
X says this mode loads images in lower quality and stops videos from autoplaying. Android also has separate controls for high-quality images, video, and autoplay; see X’s Android data usage instructions.

Stop videos from autoplaying on x.com
- On x.com, open More → Settings and privacy → Accessibility, display, and languages → Data usage → Autoplay.
- Select Never to prevent automatic playback, or On cellular or Wi-Fi to allow autoplay on either connection.
The website setting is independent of the app’s setting, so changing autoplay on x.com does not change it in the app. X documents the web options and this distinction in its video autoplay instructions.
Choose an autoplay setting in the app
If you prefer videos to autoplay only when your phone is on Wi-Fi, select the Wi-Fi-only option in the app. For the strictest control over automatic playback, select Never.

What to expect—and what not to assume
- Data Saver trades image detail for lower-quality loading; on iOS, you can request an individual image in high quality when needed.
- Autoplay controls affect automatic video playback, not every way X can use data.
- X does not publish a fixed amount or percentage of cellular data these settings save. Actual use depends on how you use the service, so a specific saving cannot be promised from the documented settings alone.
- Menu labels may change as X updates its apps or website. If a path differs, look under Settings and privacy for Data usage or Autoplay.
