Yes. Calibre 9.16 adds Kokoro voices to its ebook viewer’s Read aloud feature. To try one, open the viewer’s Read aloud configuration, select the Piper backend, and choose a Kokoro voice; Calibre downloads that voice the first time you use it. Calibre describes Kokoro as more natural-sounding than Piper, especially for English, but that is the project’s assessment—not a guarantee or the result of an independent listening test.
What changed in Calibre 9.16
Calibre’s release notes for version 9.16, dated 9 October 2026, add Kokoro voices to Read aloud. Kokoro is selected through the Piper backend, rather than as a separate backend. Once you pick a voice, Calibre downloads it automatically on first use. The release notes do not state the download size, the full range of supported languages, or per-voice hardware requirements. Calibre says Kokoro sounds more natural than Piper, particularly in English. That is a developer characterization; the available release information does not provide a controlled comparison, independent listening tests, or a measurable voice-quality score.
How to make Calibre read an ebook aloud

Start Read aloud. Calibre downloads the selected voice automatically the first time it is used.
Calibre’s earlier instructions describe starting Read aloud from the viewer controls or with Ctrl+S. Viewer controls and shortcut behavior can depend on version and context, so use the controls and configuration available in your current viewer if that shortcut does not work. Calibre What’s New

Does Calibre text to speech work offline?
Calibre introduced Piper in version 7.18 as a neural-network text-to-speech engine that runs locally, without cloud services. That supports offline use of the Piper engine once the needed voice is available on the computer. The Kokoro voice is downloaded on first use, so that initial download requires network access; the cited documentation does not establish the network behavior of every other output route or configuration. Kokoro, Piper, and your operating system’s speech voices
Piper is the backend through which Calibre exposes both Piper and Kokoro voice choices. Calibre’s release notes characterize Kokoro as more natural-sounding, especially for English, but do not establish a universal preference. The operating system’s text-to-speech engine remains available through the Read aloud configuration as another option. Read aloud versus creating audio for an EPUB
Listening to a book in Calibre’s viewer is different from creating an audio experience that travels with an EPUB. Calibre also documents a Piper-based audio-overlay tool in the Edit book interface. That authoring feature can embed audio in an EPUB so it can be listened to in reading software even when the reader’s software does not have a functioning text-to-speech system. New in Calibre 8.0
