The fastest way to control an iPad Air with a keyboard is to learn the Command (⌘) shortcuts, then use trackpad edge swipes and multi-finger gestures for navigation. Press and hold Command on a supported Apple external keyboard to display shortcuts for the app you are using. With a compatible trackpad, swipe from the bottom edge for the Dock or Home screen, use the right edge for Slide Over, and use two- and three-finger gestures for scrolling, zooming and app switching where your trackpad supports them.

This guide separates shortcuts that work broadly across iPadOS from gestures Apple documents only for particular trackpads. That distinction matters: an integrated keyboard trackpad, a standalone Magic Trackpad 2 and another pointing device may not expose the same controls.

Start with the iPad Air keyboard shortcuts you will use most

Most iPad keyboard shortcuts use Command (⌘), much as Control does on a Windows PC. If you use a PC-style keyboard, treat its Command-equivalent key as the modifier for these commands. The exact set available changes by app, so a shortcut that works in a text editor may not appear in a game or media app.

Shortcut Action Where it is useful
Command-C Copy the selected item Text, files and other selectable content
Command-X Cut the selected item Editable text and supported content
Command-V Paste copied or cut content Text fields and apps that accept the content type
Command-A Select all All text or items in the active context
Command-Z Undo the last edit Apps that provide undo
Command-Tab Switch between apps Move through recently used apps without touching the screen
Command-Space Open Search Find apps, files and other searchable results

Use the command only after selecting the target. For example, select text, press Command-C, place the insertion point in another field and press Command-V. If nothing is selected, Command-C or Command-X may have no visible effect. Command-Z affects the active app, so confirm that the correct window or text field has focus before undoing.

How do I see keyboard shortcuts on iPad?

Shortcut discovery is built into iPadOS. On an Apple external keyboard, press and hold the Command key while the app is active. A panel appears with the shortcuts that app currently exposes. Release Command to dismiss it. This is the most reliable way to learn app-specific commands because the list changes with the app and the current context.

You can also inspect the app’s menus. Some iPad apps show a menu from the top edge of the screen; apps used with a pointer may expose a menu bar. Menu entries display their keyboard equivalents when one is available. If a command is absent from both the menu and the Command overlay, do not assume that a random key combination will work—availability is app-dependent.

A quick discovery routine

  1. Open the app in which you want to work.
  2. Press and hold Command on the connected Apple external keyboard.
  3. Read the displayed list and try one command while the same app remains active.
  4. Open the app menu from the top edge or menu bar and look for additional entries.
  5. Repeat after changing context, such as moving from a document to a file list, because an app can expose different commands in different places.

What does Command-Tab do on iPad?

Command-Tab switches apps. Hold Command and tap Tab to move through the apps iPadOS presents as recently used. This is useful when moving between a document, a browser and a reference app because it avoids opening the Dock or returning to the Home screen. The shortcut changes the active app; it does not create a new window or alter the app’s document.

For a specific app’s behavior, hold Command after switching to that app. Its shortcut overlay is tied to the active app, so the list you saw in one app is not a universal iPadOS catalog.

Use trackpad edge gestures to reach iPadOS destinations

Trackpad gestures are easiest to remember by destination rather than by finger count. Keep your pointer on the iPad display and begin the swipe at the physical edge of the trackpad or screen direction described below.

Reveal the Dock, then go Home

  1. Swipe past the bottom edge to reveal the Dock.
  2. Swipe past the bottom edge again to go to the Home screen.

The first swipe exposes app and system shortcuts in the Dock while the current app remains available. A second bottom-edge swipe takes you Home. If the first swipe does not register, start nearer the trackpad’s lower edge and use a continuous, deliberate motion rather than a short movement in the center.

Open Slide Over from the right edge

Swipe past the right edge to open Slide Over. This brings a floating app alongside the current app when Slide Over is available in the current iPadOS layout. Because the gesture begins at the edge, a swipe that starts too far inside the trackpad may move content instead of invoking Slide Over.

Reach Control Center and Notification Center

Use the status-area icons at the top of the iPad display for system panels. The trackpad guide from Apple includes access to Control Center and Notification Center through those status icons. Move the pointer to the relevant icon and use the trackpad action your device supports to open it; the exact click or swipe response depends on the connected trackpad.

Two-finger and three-finger gestures: check your trackpad first

Apple distinguishes general trackpad behavior from additional gestures available on Magic Trackpad 2 and on the trackpads built into Magic Keyboard for iPad and Magic Keyboard Folio. Do not assume that every gesture below works on every Bluetooth trackpad or keyboard case.

Two-finger scrolling and zooming

  • Scroll: place two fingers on the trackpad and move them together to move through a document, web page or list.
  • Zoom: use a two-finger pinch gesture in apps that support zooming, such as a document or image view.

Scrolling and zooming are app-sensitive. A page may scroll while an image view responds to pinch-to-zoom, but an app that does not implement zoom will not change scale. If two-finger movement moves the pointer instead, the connected device may not support Apple’s documented multi-touch set.

Three-finger Home and app switching

On the supported Apple trackpads listed above, Apple documents three-finger gestures for going Home and switching apps. A three-finger swipe toward the Home direction leaves the current app; a three-finger horizontal swipe can move between apps when the current iPadOS context supports it. These actions are alternatives to the bottom-edge swipe and Command-Tab, not replacements that every trackpad must provide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

App Switcher

The supported gesture set also includes a three-finger action for opening App Switcher. App Switcher shows your open apps so you can select one directly. Use it when Command-Tab would require too many taps through the recent-app sequence.

Today View and Home Screen search

Apple lists gestures for Today View and for search on the Home screen among the additional trackpad controls. Today View presents widgets and information panels; Home Screen search finds apps and other results. These gestures are tied to the Home-screen and system context, so trying them inside an app may produce a different result or no result.

Secondary click: how to right-click with an iPad trackpad

A secondary click is the iPad equivalent of a right-click. Apple includes secondary click in the additional gestures for Magic Trackpad 2 and the named Magic Keyboard trackpads. Use the trackpad’s configured secondary-click action on a file, link or other item to open its contextual menu. If a secondary click does nothing, first verify that the trackpad model supports it and that the item actually has a contextual menu; a Settings change cannot add an unsupported hardware gesture.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Keyboard.
  4. Choose Hardware Keyboard.
  5. Tap Modifier Keys.
  6. Select the connected keyboard and assign the modifier keys to the functions you prefer.

Modifier reassignment changes which physical key iPadOS treats as Command, Option, Control or another modifier. It does not create new app shortcuts; the active app still determines which combinations are available.

Turn on Full Keyboard Access

For keyboard-driven navigation through controls, open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboards and review Full Keyboard Access. This accessibility feature is separate from ordinary Command shortcuts. It is intended for moving focus through interface controls, not for changing the app’s own shortcut list.

Review pointer and trackpad behavior

When pointer movement, clicking or scrolling feels different from the documented behavior, inspect the trackpad and pointer options available in Settings while the device is connected. The available controls depend on the keyboard or trackpad type. Do not expect a setting to enable a gesture that the hardware does not support.

Choosing an iPad Air keyboard-and-trackpad setup

There are two practical arrangements: an integrated keyboard case with a built-in trackpad, or separate accessories. The right choice depends on whether you need portability, a particular gesture set or the ability to position the keyboard independently.

Arrangement What it provides Compatibility and gesture considerations
Integrated keyboard and trackpad Keyboard, trackpad and iPad support in one hinged or folio-style accessory Check the exact iPad Air generation and screen size; the built-in trackpad may support the Apple gesture set documented for that keyboard model
Standalone trackpad plus keyboard Separate positioning and the option to replace one component independently Gesture availability depends on the standalone trackpad model; a generic pointing device may not expose Apple’s multi-finger controls

What Apple specifies for the 13-inch Magic Keyboard for iPad Air

Apple’s 2025 technical specifications for the 13-inch Magic Keyboard for iPad Air list an integrated trackpad, a 14-key function row and USB-C pass-through charging. The cited specification lists compatibility with the 13-inch iPad Air models using M2, M3 and M4 chips and requires iPadOS 18.3 or later.

Apple Magic Keyboard: Keyboard and Case for iPad Air 13-inch (M2, M3, and M4), US English — Black
  • WHY MAGIC KEYBOARD FOR IPAD — The incredibly thin and portable Magic Keyboard for iPad Air delivers an amazing typing experience, with a full 14-key function row, built-in trackpad, USB-C pass-through charging, and a floating cantilever design. No pairing or charging required.
  • DESIGNED FOR COMFORT — Magic Keyboard for iPad Air attaches magnetically and features a two-cantilever hinge design for smooth, adjustable viewing angles; physical keycaps with a scissor mechanism; and a 14-key function row for comfort and versatility.

  • PROTECTIVE KEYBOARD AND CASE — Folds to provide front and back protection wherever you go and features a USB-C connector for pass-through charging. Available in white.

Those details apply to the specified 13-inch model, not automatically to every iPad Air keyboard or every iPad Air size. Before buying or pairing an accessory, confirm all three items:

  • Display size: verify whether your iPad Air is the 11-inch or 13-inch version.
  • Generation: match the accessory listing to your iPad Air model and chip generation.
  • Software: for the cited 13-inch specification, update to iPadOS 18.3 or later.

Accessory listings and compatibility can change, so recheck the current Apple specification and the exact model identifier before purchase. A keyboard that physically fits an iPad Air is not necessarily supported by the same iPadOS version or gesture set.

A practical keyboard-and-trackpad workflow

Editing a document

  1. Place the pointer in the document and select text using the app’s selection method.
  2. Press Command-C to copy, or Command-X to cut.
  3. Use Command-Tab to move to the destination app.
  4. Click or tap the destination text field, then press Command-V.
  5. If the result is wrong, press Command-Z immediately while the destination app is active.

This sequence keeps selection, app switching, pasting and undo on the keyboard. If a command is unavailable, hold Command in that app to see its supported alternatives.

Finding an app or file without leaving the keyboard

  1. Press Command-Space to open Search.
  2. Type the name of the app, file or other item.
  3. Select the result using the keyboard or pointer controls available in the search interface.

Home Screen search gestures and Command-Space both reach search, but the keyboard shortcut is usually easier when your hands are already on the keys.

Moving between apps and system panels

  1. Use Command-Tab for rapid app switching.
  2. Swipe past the bottom edge to expose the Dock when you need a visible list of apps.
  3. Swipe past the bottom edge again to go Home.
  4. Use the right-edge swipe for Slide Over when you need a floating app beside the current one.
  5. Open Control Center or Notification Center from their status-area icons.

Troubleshoot shortcuts and gestures

Command shortcuts do nothing

  • Confirm that the keyboard is connected and that the intended app or text field has focus.
  • Hold Command to see whether the app supports the shortcut.
  • Check the Hardware Keyboard and Modifier Keys settings if the physical Command key is not acting as expected.
  • Try the command with a simple selectable text field. Some apps do not implement editing commands.

The pointer moves, but multi-finger gestures fail

  • Identify the connected device: an integrated Magic Keyboard trackpad, Magic Trackpad 2 and another trackpad may expose different gestures.
  • Check that iPadOS meets the accessory’s requirement. The cited 13-inch Magic Keyboard specification requires iPadOS 18.3 or later.
  • Test basic pointer movement and a one-finger click before testing two- or three-finger actions.
  • Review trackpad and pointer settings while the device is connected.

A setting can change behavior on supported hardware, but it cannot make an unsupported trackpad provide Apple’s documented multi-touch gestures.

Edge swipes open the wrong thing

  • Begin at the actual bottom or right edge instead of the center of the trackpad.
  • Use a clear swipe past the edge; a short movement may scroll the current app.
  • For the Dock and Home sequence, perform the first bottom-edge swipe, then a second one.
  • Remember that the right-edge gesture is for Slide Over, while status-area controls open Control Center or Notification Center.

The accessory does not fit or charge as expected

Recheck the exact iPad Air size and generation against the accessory specification. The 13-inch model’s listed features—integrated trackpad, 14-key function row and USB-C pass-through charging—belong to that specific keyboard model. Do not generalize them to an 11-inch case or an older iPad Air without a matching specification.

A compact reference checklist

  • Copy, cut, paste: Command-C, Command-X, Command-V.
  • Select all: Command-A.
  • Undo: Command-Z.
  • Switch apps: Command-Tab.
  • Open Search: Command-Space.
  • See app shortcuts: hold Command.
  • Dock: swipe past the bottom edge once.
  • Home: swipe past the bottom edge again, or use a supported three-finger Home gesture.
  • Slide Over: swipe past the right edge.
  • Scrolling and zooming: use two fingers on a trackpad that supports Apple’s multi-touch gestures.
  • Right-click: use secondary click on supported trackpads.
  • Modifier settings: Settings > General > Keyboard > Hardware Keyboard > Modifier Keys.
  • Full Keyboard Access: Settings > Accessibility > Keyboards.

Learn the Command overlay first, then add the edge gestures you use every day. Finally, verify your trackpad model and iPadOS version before relying on multi-finger controls or choosing an accessory.
