The reliable way to use a hotel price-match guarantee is to book through the hotel’s own website or app first, then submit a claim when you find a lower, publicly bookable rate for the same property, dates, room, guests, cancellation terms, currency, and inclusions. Most programs give you only a short deadline—often 24 hours—and reject rates that are opaque, packaged, member-only, or no longer available when the hotel checks them.
What a hotel price-match guarantee actually does
A guarantee is a conditional benefit attached to an eligible direct reservation. It is not a general promise to refund any cheaper third-party booking. The hotel compares your confirmed direct reservation with a competing public offer and applies the benefit only if every rule is satisfied.
That distinction answers the common question, “Can I book through an online travel agency and then ask the hotel to match it?” Usually, no. You normally need a reservation made on the chain’s own website, app, call center, or another channel named in that chain’s terms. IHG, for example, requires a confirmed reservation made through an IHG direct channel before its Best Price Guarantee can be claimed.
When a claim succeeds, the result varies by chain. IHG publishes a rate match plus five times the normal IHG One Rewards points, capped at 40,000 points. Marriott lets an approved claimant choose either a 25% discount or 5,000 points, with a 20% discount applying to Design Hotels. Hilton publishes a match plus 25% off the stay. Hyatt requires an online claim after a Hyatt.com booking; the current Hyatt claim terms determine the applicable benefit and exclusions.

Make the two rates genuinely identical
Hotels do not compare a headline price alone. They compare the complete offer that a guest could book immediately. Use this checklist before submitting:
- Property: the same hotel, not another property in the same city or a similarly named sister hotel.
- Dates: identical check-in and check-out dates, including the same number of nights.
- Occupancy: the same number of adults and children, with children’s ages entered when the site requests them.
- Room category: the same room name, bed configuration, view, size, smoking status, and accessibility features where listed.
- Inclusions: matching breakfast, resort fees, parking, Wi-Fi, credits, transfers, or other benefits.
- Cancellation and payment: the same cancellation deadline, refundable or nonrefundable status, deposit requirement, and payment timing.
- Currency: display both offers in the same currency. IHG expressly includes currency in its comparison rules.
- Taxes and mandatory fees: compare the final payable amount and identify whether either site adds taxes or mandatory charges later in checkout.
- Availability: the competing room and rate must still be bookable when the chain verifies your claim.
A cheaper nonrefundable room is not the same rate as a refundable direct booking. Neither is a king room equivalent to a twin room, or a breakfast-included offer equivalent to room-only. If one detail differs, choose a truly matching offer or expect the claim to fail.
Act within the claim window
Price-match programs are time-sensitive because rates can disappear or change. IHG requires a claim within 24 hours of the direct reservation and at least 24 hours before the property’s standard check-in time. Marriott’s guidance uses a 24-hour comparison window after direct booking. Hyatt says the online form must be submitted within 24 hours after a Hyatt.com booking. Hilton’s published page requires a qualifying, verifiable lower rate; check the current claim page for the applicable submission deadline before relying on the benefit.
Do not wait for the price to fall again. The relevant comparison is the lower rate that is available during the program’s allowed window, not a price you saw earlier in a search result. A rate that disappears before verification cannot normally support a match.

Save evidence before you submit
Open the competing offer all the way through its room and payment details. Record the information while the rate is still available:
- the complete URL and the date and time you viewed it;
- hotel name, room name, bed type, occupancy, and stay dates;
- cancellation deadline and payment conditions;
- nightly price, taxes, mandatory fees, currency, and final total;
- any breakfast, parking, resort-fee waiver, credit, or other inclusion;
- the page showing that the room can be booked publicly without a special login or hidden step.
Screenshots can preserve what you saw, but they do not override the chain’s verification. IHG says it independently verifies the lower price; its decision is based on the rate being available and comparable when checked. Keep the direct reservation active while the claim is reviewed.
Step-by-step workflow
- Search the official channel first. Enter the property, exact dates, and guest count on the hotel chain’s website or app. Select a rate whose cancellation and payment rules fit your trip.
- Complete the direct booking. Save the confirmation number, booked room description, rate rules, taxes, and total. A confirmation is the foundation of the claim for programs that require a direct reservation.
- Search public competitor offers immediately. Check reputable online travel agencies and comparison pages for the same property and inventory. Open the full rate details instead of relying on a search-page headline.
- Match every field. Compare hotel, dates, occupants, room and bed type, meals, taxes, mandatory fees, cancellation deadline, payment timing, currency, and live availability.
- Capture the evidence. Save the URL, timestamp, terms, and final total. If the page changes during the process, capture the updated details as well.
- Submit the official form. Use the chain’s price-match or Best Price Guarantee form before its deadline. Enter the direct confirmation number and the competing rate exactly as displayed.
- Leave the reservation unchanged while it is reviewed. Do not cancel, rebook, alter dates, switch rooms, or change occupancy unless the terms explicitly allow it.
- Check the decision against the rules. If the claim is denied, compare the stated reason with the room, currency, cancellation, public-availability, and rate-type requirements before trying again with a genuinely matching offer.
How the major programs differ
| Chain | Published outcome | Important conditions |
|---|---|---|
| IHG | Lower rate matched plus 5× IHG One Rewards points, up to 40,000 points | Claim within 24 hours and at least 24 hours before standard check-in; same currency and matching room and terms; independent verification; some geographies and brands are excluded |
| Marriott | Choice of 25% off or 5,000 points | Comparison rate must be found within 24 hours of the direct booking; public rates only; opaque and package rates are excluded; Design Hotels receive a 20% discount option |
| Hilton | Matched rate plus 25% off the stay | Lower price must be qualifying, immediately bookable, and verifiable; Hilton says the comparison must be at least 1% below the official price |
| Hyatt | Benefit specified in the current Hyatt claim terms after an approved match | Submit the online form within 24 hours after booking on Hyatt.com; the booked cancellation policy continues to apply; verify current exclusions and reward details on the claim page |
IHG: a points-heavy benefit with strict timing
IHG’s published Best Price Guarantee says that when a lower rate is available on a non-IHG website, IHG will match it and provide five times the IHG One Rewards points, subject to a 40,000-point maximum. The reservation must be direct, the claim must meet both timing limits, and the competing offer must match the relevant booking fields. IHG performs its own verification, and modifications to the reservation prevent the program benefits from applying. Because some geographies and brands are excluded, read the current terms for the specific hotel before booking.

Marriott’s current help guidance gives an approved claimant a choice between a 25% reduction and 5,000 points. The discount is 20% for Design Hotels. The competing offer must be public and visible without an opaque booking process. Marriott specifically excludes opaque rates and package rates, such as offers where the hotel or room is concealed until purchase or bundled with another travel product. Submit the comparison within 24 hours of the direct reservation.

Hilton: the competitor must be at least 1% cheaper
Hilton’s Price Match Guarantee describes a match plus 25% off when a lower qualified price is found after booking directly with Hilton. The comparison must be immediately bookable and verifiable, and Hilton states that it must be at least 1% below the official price. A tiny displayed difference that vanishes at checkout, or a rate with different taxes, cancellation rules, or inclusions, may not qualify as the same accommodation.
Hyatt: submit quickly and preserve the booked terms
Hyatt says to submit its online form within 24 hours after a Hyatt.com booking. The cancellation policy attached to the reservation still governs the stay, even when a claim is approved. Hyatt’s reward and exclusion details can change, so use the current claim page for the property and rate you are booking rather than relying on an older explanation.
Rates that commonly fail the comparison
Published rules differ by chain, but the following situations create predictable problems:
- Opaque offers: the hotel or room is hidden until after payment, as with classic “express” style products.
- Package prices: the hotel is bundled with flights, car rental, activities, or another product, making the hotel portion impossible to isolate.
- Private or logged-in offers: a price available only to a closed membership, invitation, coupon, corporate account, or special login may not be considered public.
- Different cancellation rules: a free-cancellation rate cannot be compared with a prepaid, nonrefundable rate.
- Different inventory: a club-level, accessible, ocean-view, suite, or breakfast-included room is not interchangeable with a standard room.
- Different currency or fee display: a low converted headline can disappear when taxes, service charges, or exchange costs are added.
- Unavailable at verification: the competitor page may still appear in a search result but fail when the chain attempts to book it.
Marriott expressly identifies public-rate requirements and excludes opaque and package rates. Other chains may use different wording, so treat these examples as warning signs and read the particular program’s exclusions.

How to compare taxes, fees, and currency without being misled
Many apparent bargains are differences in display rather than differences in what you pay. Put both offers in the same currency and compare the final total for the entire stay. Check whether taxes are included, whether a mandatory resort or destination fee is added per night, and whether payment is due now or at the property. Note whether the competitor quotes a converted amount while the hotel charges in local currency.
Use the same cancellation deadline and payment stage in the comparison. A rate that looks cheaper because it postpones taxes until arrival is not automatically a lower qualifying rate. If a site shows only a nightly figure, continue to the final booking screen before recording the claim.
If the hotel denies the claim
Read the reason rather than immediately submitting the same evidence again. Work through these checks in order:
Recommended Free Tools
- Timing: Was the form submitted inside the chain’s window and, for IHG, at least 24 hours before standard check-in?
- Direct booking: Is the confirmation from the chain’s own eligible channel rather than an online travel agency?
- Identity of the room: Do the room name, bed, view, occupancy, and inclusions match character for character?
- Terms: Are cancellation deadline, payment timing, taxes, fees, and currency identical?
- Public access: Can an ordinary visitor book the competitor rate without a private code, login, or package purchase?
- Live availability: Does the lower offer still reach a bookable checkout page when the chain checks it?
- Reservation status: Was the direct booking modified after submission, or did a change alter the room, dates, or cancellation conditions?
Correcting one of these issues may produce a valid claim only if the applicable deadline has not passed. Do not cancel a confirmed direct reservation until you understand the chain’s decision and the cancellation consequences.
Best Value
When a guarantee is worth using
The strategy is strongest when the direct rate is already acceptable and the competing offer is materially lower after all taxes and fees. It is less attractive when the saving is tiny, the direct reservation is nonrefundable, or the competing page is unstable and likely to disappear before verification. A points award can be more useful than a percentage discount for a traveler who values that chain’s rewards, while a discount is simpler when you will not use the points.
Do not assume one chain or one online travel agency wins more claims. The published programs do not provide a reliable approval-rate statistic, and there is no established evidence that a particular OTA consistently produces successful claims. Treat the guarantee as a rules-based opportunity, not automatic savings.
Check the live terms before every booking
Price-match conditions can change by date, country, brand, and property. Before paying, open the current guarantee page for the chain, confirm that the hotel and rate are eligible, and verify the exact reward, submission deadline, exclusions, and treatment of reservation changes. The figures above reflect the chains’ published guidance available in 2026; the page governing your reservation controls if it differs.
