Use AirPlay over Wi‑Fi to send your Mac’s audio to a HomePod (2nd generation). Put both devices on the same network, then choose HomePod from Apple Music’s AirPlay button or from Control Centre → Sound → AirPlay for other apps.
There is one prerequisite that often causes confusion: Apple requires an iPhone or iPad to set up HomePod. A Mac cannot perform the initial HomePod setup. Once setup is complete, the Mac streams to the speaker wirelessly; no audio cable connects the two.

What you need before connecting a Mac
| Requirement | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| HomePod (2nd generation) | Apple introduced this model in 2023. Its specifications include 802.11n Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, AirPlay sharing from a Mac, multiroom audio with AirPlay, and stereo-pair support. |
| iPhone or iPad with the Home app | The first-time setup path is through an iPhone or iPad. Apple states that HomePod cannot be set up with a Mac. |
| Mac and HomePod on the same network | AirPlay discovery depends on both devices being connected to the same network. This can be the same Wi‑Fi network even though the devices remain physically separate. |
| Apple Music or macOS Control Centre | Apple Music has its own AirPlay control. Audio from other Mac apps is selected through Control Centre in the menu bar. |
Apple’s published instructions describe a Wi‑Fi AirPlay workflow. Although the HomePod specification lists Bluetooth 5.0, the Mac-speaker procedure is not conventional Bluetooth pairing.

#1 Best Overall
- Premium, immersive, high-fidelity audio
- Use an iPhone or iPad for setup. Open the Home app on the device and follow Apple’s HomePod setup flow. Apple’s support guidance says, “You need an iPhone or iPad to set up HomePod. You can’t set up HomePod with a Mac.”
- Connect that iPhone or iPad to the intended Wi‑Fi network. The setup device’s network is important when HomePod is added to a home. If the iPhone or iPad is on a different network from the one you want to use, the Mac may not discover the speaker later.
- Finish adding HomePod to the Home app. Wait until the speaker is visible in the Home app and its setup has completed. Do not try to substitute a Mac for this step; a Mac is a playback device, not the initial HomePod setup device.
- Check the network if Apple reports a mismatch. In the Home app, follow the prompt to move HomePod to the desired network. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance specifically calls out network-mismatch alerts during setup.
- Reconnect the setup device if setup fails. Reconnect the iPhone or iPad to Wi‑Fi, then return to the Home app and use Apple’s reset or setup flow. This is the recovery path to use before troubleshooting the Mac.
Play Apple Music from your Mac through HomePod
Apple Music provides the most direct route because its playback controls include an AirPlay destination selector.
- Open Music on the Mac and start a song, album, playlist or station.
- In the playback controls, click the AirPlay icon.
- Select your HomePod from the list of available speakers.
- Leave the Mac and HomePod connected to the same network while listening. If the destination disappears, stop and check the network before repeating the selection.
The AirPlay destination is selected inside Music rather than in the Mac’s Bluetooth settings. When HomePod is selected, Music sends the playback stream to the speaker over the network.
Route audio from another Mac app
For a browser, video player, game, podcast app or another source that is not using Apple Music’s own controls, use macOS Control Centre.
- Start the audio or video in the Mac app.
- Click Control Centre in the menu bar.
- Under Sound, click AirPlay.
- Select HomePod.
The HomePod then becomes the AirPlay output for that Mac audio session. If it is not listed, keep the app open and work through the network checks in the troubleshooting section rather than attempting to pair the speaker as a Bluetooth headset.
Use two HomePods or several AirPlay speakers
Stereo pair
HomePod (2nd generation) supports a stereo pair. Apple requires two HomePod speakers of the same model for that configuration. The pair is created in the Home app, after which it can be used as an AirPlay destination.
A stereo pair is different from selecting two unrelated speakers in Mac Control Centre. The pair must first be configured as a supported HomePod arrangement; mixing different HomePod models does not meet Apple’s same-model requirement.

- Features a 4" high-excursion woofer and five beamforming tweeters for deep bass, clear vocals, and detailed room-filling audio.
- Room Sensing technology automatically adjusts sound based on where the speaker is placed.
- Built-in Siri enables voice control for music, reminders, messages, smart home devices, and more.
- Supports AirPlay, Spatial Audio, Thread, Matter smart home control, Bluetooth 5.0, and Wi-Fi 4.
- Pair two HomePod speakers for stereo sound or use multiple units for whole-home audio playback.
Multiroom AirPlay
HomePod 2 also supports multiroom audio with AirPlay. However, Apple places a specific restriction on Mac Control Centre: “You can’t use AirPlay to stream audio to multiple speakers from Control Centre on a Mac.” In practice, the Mac Control Centre workflow lets you choose one AirPlay speaker at a time. Multiroom playback must therefore be managed through a compatible AirPlay control path rather than assuming that the Mac’s Sound panel can select several independent speakers.
Why HomePod may not appear on the Mac
AirPlay discovery is network-based. Work through these checks in order so that you do not reset a correctly configured speaker unnecessarily.
1. Verify the network on both devices
Confirm that the Mac and HomePod are on the same network. Apple’s AirPlay instructions begin with this requirement: “Make sure your Mac and speakers are on the same network.” Check the Mac’s current Wi‑Fi connection, then verify HomePod’s network in the Home app.
2. Check the iPhone or iPad used for setup
The device that originally configured HomePod must also be connected to Wi‑Fi during troubleshooting. If it was moved to another network, reconnect it to the intended network and reopen the Home app. A setup-device network mismatch can prevent the HomePod configuration from completing correctly.
3. Respond to a network-mismatch alert
If the Home app presents an alert saying that HomePod is on a different network, use the Home app’s option to move the speaker to the desired network. After the move completes, return to the Mac and open the AirPlay list again.

4. Retry from the correct control
For Apple Music, use the AirPlay icon inside Music. For every other app, use Control Centre → Sound → AirPlay. Checking the wrong menu can make a working speaker appear to be missing because the destination list is app-specific.

- Extensive Using Occasions: 1 pack solid wood stand with steel ring, soft foam, silicone pad in the box. Setup the wooden mount with homepod speaker on table, desk, wardrobe, cabinet in house, home, office and shop. (Notes: Apple homepod 2nd speaker is not included in this order.)
5. Reconnect Wi‑Fi and repeat setup if necessary
Reconnect the iPhone or iPad to Wi‑Fi and follow Apple’s reset/setup guidance in the Home app if the speaker still cannot be discovered. Resetting should be the later step, after confirming the network and setup device, because it removes the existing HomePod configuration.
6. Interpret a one-speaker list correctly
If you expect several destinations but Control Centre shows only one, that can be the documented Mac limitation rather than a fault. Apple does not allow Control Centre on a Mac to stream to multiple speakers simultaneously.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is HomePod 2 a Bluetooth speaker for a Mac?
HomePod 2 includes Bluetooth 5.0 in its specifications, but Apple’s instructions for using it with a Mac describe AirPlay over Wi‑Fi. Do not treat it like a conventional Bluetooth audio speaker that you select from the Mac’s Bluetooth pairing list. The supported Mac workflow is to select HomePod as an AirPlay destination in Music or Control Centre.
This distinction also explains why a working internet connection and matching local network matter. AirPlay discovery and streaming use the network path; Bluetooth availability in the specification does not replace that documented setup.
What to expect for games, monitoring and live work
Apple’s official pages do not publish a latency measurement for Mac-to-HomePod AirPlay. Consequently, there is no documented number that can establish suitability for latency-sensitive gaming, live monitoring or musical performance. AirPlay is appropriate for ordinary Mac listening when convenience and wireless placement are the priority, but choose a purpose-built low-latency connection when timing must be guaranteed.
The absence of a published latency figure is not a claim that every use will feel delayed; it means Apple does not provide a measured value on the cited support and specification pages. Keep that limitation in mind before relying on HomePod for real-time work.
Quick operating checklist
- HomePod 2 was initially set up in the Home app on an iPhone or iPad.
- The Mac, HomePod and setup iPhone or iPad are connected to the intended network.
- Apple Music uses its playback-controls AirPlay button.
- Other Mac apps use Control Centre → Sound → AirPlay.
- A stereo pair contains two HomePod speakers of the same model.
- Mac Control Centre selects one AirPlay speaker, not several at once.
- If discovery fails, check the network and Home app configuration before using reset/setup.
Apple documentation dates
Apple lists HomePod (2nd generation) as introduced in 2023. The AirPlay support documentation used for the Mac workflow is dated May 5, 2026, and Apple’s HomePod setup troubleshooting guidance is dated April 10, 2026. These pages are the relevant references for the network, setup-device and multi-speaker limitations described above.
